Visiting Chester to visit family and this is their local chippy. It is totally great! Crisp, thin batter on gorgeous piece of cod, generous portion of well cooked chips, good quality mushy peas and tangy curry sauce. We were also able to snag the last 2 portions of southern fried gravy, which is soooooo delicious, and a portion of onion rings. Surroundings are bright and clean, staff are friendly and welcoming and they truly know and care where their ingredients come from. This is one to detour to visit!!

Given a Groupon voucher as a gift for this meal. We got the budget Groupon service. Small table tucked away. Tonight a long story short the rump top steak cut we were only able to have with this package was so chewey and poor it had to be re cooked just to be edible The monkfish cheeks I had as a starter was tiny and smothered in a curried sauce the triple cooked chips were processed thin croquettes. And the Dirty mash did t seem to have the bacon lardons. Just some gravy and a sprig of cooked onions. All in all a poor showing for what looks like a lovely place to dine. To top it off the first bill presented was for the full meal no Groupon voucher taken into account. And the waitresses rolled her eyes when I explained their error. Chester has a lot of dining experiences and we go to a few when we can. I don’t think we will revisit this one.

We should have guessed when the place was completely empty. The last time we visited the food wasn’t very good , but I always give places a second chance. This pub is also very local to us and in the past has been very good , even visiting with friends. The brioche bun was that burnt it broke into pieces when I cut it , the chips are definitely frozen and not homemade and my husband ordered mash potatoes and received chips , we did tell the server and she brought out some mash, my husband had to use the mash to put inside his steak pie to soak up the watery contents. My food was terrible if I’m honest and I pretty much left it. Unfortunately I don’t think we will be visiting again. This used to be a very good pub for its food, but now looks like it’s turning into a drinking man’s pub, such a shame.

Food & service poor. We went as a family on a Saturday afternoon and sadly wouldn’t recommend. The food average and not as described (pie filling chewy, not cooked for 12 hours and gravy certainly not homemade, tasted like instant gravy) When asked to change for something else we were ignored. On top of that the beer wasn’t great.

Delicious food and excellent service. Would highly recommend! I had the vegan roast and we also ordered 2 beef roasts, a fish and chips and a kids macaroni cheese. My only observation was that the kids meal came out after the others whilst I always prefer it to be served first. All in all a lovely experience with excellent views of the garden areas.

This was our third visit to Okells, and again, we were not disappointed. Even though it was quite busy, we found a table pretty quickly and then placed our order. The coffees came quite quickly, but the food order was a tad slow. However, the staff were busy rushing around and about, so I suppose that's just the way it goes sometimes. When the food arrived, we weren't disappointed, and we enjoyed 2 decent portions of quiche with salad and coleslaw. Only one small niggle..... the coleslaw was a bit salty for our taste. And if we have to be really picky, we would preferred our coffees after our meals. Maybe I should have told the staff of our preference?? Nevertheless, we enjoyed our meals and we'll be back again in a few months. Oh, and one more thing to mention....... most of the staff were very friendly, and helped us when we had questions to ask.

First visit since 2017, can say the ice cream I had (conder toffee) was a lot lot nicer than my last visit in 2017. Sadly the service was lacking. Was quite a wait to be served which I get however there was only one last on at that time. Another lady came out and could of smiled a little more and be less unhappy looking

Visiting Chester for a few days, we happened on the Cross Keys on our last night, which was their quiz night, but the landlord ensured we felt included. For us it’s a “proper” pub, it reminded us of when we used to have a “ local”. Thank you for the warm welcome.

We have been coming here for a while and still enjoy our visits and the food is great quality but it hasn't been as hot as it could be recently, particularly the breakfasts. Amend this small issue & it will be back to 5 out of 5. Staff are lovely and work really hard and are always really pleasant and helpful.
