Chalk Coffee in Cheshire West and Chester

Stopped by for a coffee yesterday. Lovely tasting coffee (Americano). The staff were friendly and attentive, good Covid measures, lovely surroundings and a great atmosphere. Would certainly go again when in Chester.

Popped in for brunch. Had a granola bowl and coffee both were delicious. Decor is lovely, place is nice and clean and the staff very friendly and helpful. Would highly recommend visiting here.

Lovely little cafe - nice coffee and a great selection of cakes, the carrot cake was lovely! It’s got a lovely cosy feel inside to!

I dropped in while waiting for my car to be serviced. I was pleasantly Suprised by the quality of the coffee and the excellent service.

Great coffee and friendly staff. Could do with a bigger choice of pastries. They had a limited amount of croissants left when we arrived just before 11am. The ones we had were very nice though, but only 2 of our group were able to have one.

I’ve never had a bad experience at Chalk. The quality and presentation of the food and drink is outstanding, and the service is great. I’ve tried quite a few different drinks, all exceptional. The food is varied, fresh and obviously made with high quality ingredients. The cafe itself is a very relaxing place and the staff have handled COVID social distancing and cleanliness requirements very well - I feel very safe when I go there.Would highly recommend to everyone.

My first post lockdown visit to Chalk for great coffee. Great surroundings, good and friendly service which was exactly what was needed!

I had a coffee, a beef sandwich and a cinnamon roll and was very pleased with my lot. Standard coffee shop utilitarian decor, elaborate wifi sign on. Recommend

This is a great little place. The sandwiches are always delicious, and the coffee is lovely. The place has lovely decor, and the staff are always really accommodating to your needs.

This cafe is located in the historic and tourist center of Chester. I liked everything, the place is very well decorated with the mixture of modern with exposed brick. I had a café latte and a cake, very good, and the service was also up to par. Safety distance and hand sanitiser.

I was one of their first customers all those years ago. Robyn & Ed are the owners and they have a fantastic set of staff behind them. I know of Robyn mostly and wow you can just tell that she enjoys every ounce of the day, so bubbly and couldn't do enough to help. She'll even sit down with me when my wife doesn't come to the shops (socially distanced of course). Sterling service from start to finish!They have the ultimate trifecta of a business model - quality, price and service.

If you're looking for amazing coffee to sit in or takeaway from an independent shop this is the place! Employees are passionate about coffee and know what they're talking about. Would also highly recommend the sandwiches and cakes which always hit the spot!

I always love going to Chalk. The atmosphere is easy and friendly, making it a great place to meet friends. Not to mention the coffee is the best in town and the staff are so knowledgable. Love it 🙌

Great coffee and cake, well worth a visit. Fab location and quirky architecture. Caramel slice and lemon drizzle were a perfect accompaniment to great coffee.

I visited here a couple of weeks ago. No complaints about the coffee or food, they were fantastic! But the staff were just unmotivated, bored and just quite rude. One girl looked like she hadn’t slept in about 2 weeks and there seemed to be just a lack of cleaning considering the circumstances. I would go here again just hope next time the staff are a bit more polite.

Was unimpressed today by a complete lack of ppe worn by any staff members. Very quiet as we arrived but as it got busier. There also seemed to be a lack of cleaning between customers using tables. Not impressed by this.

I came here a few months ago and my experience wasn’t the best, the coffee was bitter and luke warm and the staff weren’t very friendly. I decided to come here again to give it a second shot as we’re pretty limited for options to go at the moment... and I’ll say it again, not very impressed. The same blonde girl that served me a few months ago served me again. This girl is rude and seems to be lacking in manners. Quicker they get rid of her the quicker I’ll be back

Great variety of coffees and attention to detail in the preparation. You can find a coffee you like and buy the beans to take away.

Warm and welcoming, really nice tea and coffee, good service and great location. Tea was in a china mug too (very important!)

Stopped off for a quick coffee and we were tempted by the delicious wraps and the wonderful Long Black Coffee, the staff are friendly and professional and by the look of the clientele a very popular spot.

Chalk is by far my favourite place to get coffee in Chester. The atmosphere is great, the staff are friendly and the coffee is amazing!

Chalk Coffee is an excellent venue, nestled elegantly in Watergate Street, one of the original streets in Roman Chester and offering a drop down entrance into an arched gallery flavoured with the burning scent of excellent coffee. If you require a place to settle and socialise, or even take the dog for a refuel after his travels, dont hesitate and look for the swinging chalk board on the street. Coffee seems to taste so similar these days, but Chalk does it different - i guess a recipe they'll take to the grave..

Good service, good quality food and drinks and nice environment. Relaxed and very pleasant. Highly recommended, will definitely go back.

Great service and lovely drinks. I had herbal tea which wasn't the usual teabag in a cup but a full pot using loose tea...enough for 2 mugs..so great value for money too.

With all the coffee shops in Chester I have to say this will be my last visit here. Rude staff is an understatement. When I asked if they had any syrups for my friends coffee I was told ‘we don’t stick things like that we only serve actual coffee here’ in a very off handed way. The coffee itself look pretty but they burnt the milk in my latte and the Americano tasted weak and bitter. For the price you’re better going any where else. Let’s be honest Chester has enough options including two next door or opposite.

They have a nice look place, but absolutely no phone signal as it is a basement.

Chalk offers a lovely ambiance , great coffee and food . Always very clean and staff are extremely efficient and pleasant . Would highly recommend visiting chalk when near chester .

Maybe the couple who own it should keep the PDA to themselves! there are children around can they not be professional?????

Came here as we saw a customer coming out with a dog. They not only welcome dogs but provide a big jar of free if charge treats for our canine friends. We had sandwiches, wraps, tea, coffee and cakes. All delicious. Friendly, polite service. Highly recommend.

Popped into this place as we wanted to try an independent cafe instead of a chain. I ordered a tea with soya milk, when it arrived with hot soya milk (not what I asked for) I went back to the counter and requested cold soya milk which is how its served everywhere else and also how I have it at home every day. When I put it in the teal white bits floated to the top and it had curdled. When I approached the staff about this I was given a story about it being a barista soya milk and a particular protein it contained. Maybe it would have been useful to know this before I ordered or during the order, it was quite an embarrassing scene, going back and forth to the counter and the staff looking at you like we were being difficult when a simple explanation would've solved it and we wouldn't be made to feel like we have to ask for our money back and leave

We took refuge from the rain here and were very glad we did. The staff are friendly, the tea and coffee first rate and the cakes delicious. Would thoroughly recommend it but beware of the low ceiling in the loo. As it's vaulted, you have to bend to use the washbasin safely.

Popped in for a coffee and cake. A nice relaxing place with a good feel to it. Even though it was late afternoon there was still a good selection of cakes. The cakes were very nice and a good cup of coffee.

This is an independent cafe in a Watergate Street undercroft. The brick walls, vaulted ceilings and exposed beams give the cafe an amazing character. Staff were very helpful and pleasant. Although in an ancient undercroft, the cafe has modern facilities and tables were occupied by people working on laptops all plugged in. This has its plusses and minuses since several tables for 4 people had one person working on their laptop (probably for a long time). Coffee was very good and tea which came in a big pot was also good.

I came in here a week or so ago with a couple friends, I brought them here as I had been before and it was all superb. This time however, not so great. I went to order our coffees and we were served by an extremely rude blonde girl who didn't want to be there at all! As I went to come onto trip advisor to write this review I googled chalk coffee, turns out this girl is one of the owners!!! Should you really be running a coffee shop if this is the service you give? apart from that, coffee was delicious!

We were in Chester for afternoon tea, but wanted a coffee first thing, Chester has an abundance of coffee shops, the high st was buzzing, a far cry from what the general High st shopping scene is supposed to be right now.

Top quality coffee, expertly made then served with laid-back friendliness. Cool minimalist decor in the setting of a structurally stunning building complete the appeal. Definitely the best coffee shop in Chester.

Looking for a coffee whilst my car underwent a tyre repair I headed up Watergate street, a street of numerous cafes, very few were open on this wet morning. I resigned myself to a Costa! But yards before I came upon a niche, contemporary newcomer, opened last August, friendly staff welcomed me, the coffee and tiffin were delightful, this Cestrian cellar crypt is a gem . I can highly recommend as a retreat from the rain and world outside ✅

Went after work at midnight for their late night tales event with my coworker - absolutely amazing! Had such a blast and definitely not complaining about being able to have a nice cup of coffee at 1 am!

Me and my mum came in with our dog, the food and drinks were so nice. We had a BLT/egg, two donuts and it was beautiful! Great customer service! Dog friendly and they have water bowels and treats. Will definatly reccomend :)

Was a busy Sunday morning, walked in with my friends, queued and bought some coffee and cakes and asked for a copy of receipt. The girl at the cashier was clearly under trained and do not know how to use their till at all. So she told us to wait at table for receipt. While we almost finished having coffee, we asked another member of staff to give us a copy of receipt, as it was not busy at the till at all. The staff did not pass the info! Then after we finished everything went to till and asked for receipt again, the under trained girl did not want to serve us at all, just busy serving new customers, so we were told again just wait! As we wait, I asked another staff for it, and he replied : our system is different!!! That’s it!! What was that? Finally we got the receipt, but with no apology at all!!! Will never go back and the coffee is not that good anyway! Far more better coffee and most important far more better services somewhere else in Chester!

We stopped here for coffee and were delighted they had complimentary infused water too. We had a selection of coffees and all were delicious (oat milk and other vegan options). We also asked the staff for recommendations for dinner and they gave us a few including Bar Lounge which was amazing. Perfect stop off place.

Popped in to Chalk for a much needed coffee after walking ‘the wall’. It was the perfect place to relax. Great building, fab coffee, delicious Victoria Sandwich cake, cool tunes and a very stylish toilet!

Been to this place a few times now and the coffee is exceptional. Very clean environment and attentive staff. The owner has a great knowledge of coffee and the attention to detail is great. Perfect for. Meetings, catch up’s or just a solo visit.

Nice to find an independent coffee shop. Enjoyed the first cappuccino so much that we have come back a couple of times during our stay in Chester. Very tasty coffee and the chocolate/orange cake was fabulous. All staff are very pleasant too.

There are a lot of coffee house in Chester, well on Watergate Street as well for 5at matter. If you have a regular place then the short story is stay there.

What a nice little cafe with very pleasant staff and extremely tasty cake. There are a couple of deep steps down into the cafe but if you can manage them it’s worth a visit.
