This was our first visit since we were in the area and on our way home at about 18:00. The shop itself is very welcoming as are the staff. It really does look like a 'proper' fish & chip shop and the reviews and commendations gave rise to high expectations. I ordered three large cod and chips which cost in the order of £32 which I guess is about right nowadays. They came nicely packaged and we drove home (about 15 minutes) to eat them. In my opinion the fish, although well cooked and tasty, was not particularly large and did not have a lot of thickness to it. Most disappointing however were the chips; quite soft and a bit mushy. My wife and niece didn't like them although I polished mine off. I was a bit surprised at this and wondered if the time that they stood in the boxes could have affected them ?

Our first try of the food here as we are on holiday and looking specifically for a chip shop that caters for gluten free diets. We ordered 2 regular chips, gluten free sausage, gluten free curry sauce and a fish cake. All were tasty and overall happy with our meal. Would recommend especially if you are looking for somewhere serving gluten free food. Service was also efficient and polite.

This may have been the best portion of fish and chips I have ever eaten, and I've had some really good fish and chips in the past. I was in Chester just for the day and this was my first experience of Weston Grove, however it won't be my last. If I'm anywhere near the city again I'll be back, even if it involves a substantial detour.

Had the special onion rings nice and crunchy peas were lovely the curry is not the normal chippy swag it's different and lovely with a bit of a kick I had the haddock it's a good size with a light batter and big flakes of fish it was a little bit greasy underneath but still tasted fine the battered sausage was meaty and crunchy overall very good 👍

My first visit today for fish and chips. I was able to park easily and the shop wasn’t busy at 5pm. The interior is substantially better than your average chippy - the product of much love, care, and attention to detail. Regarding the food, it’s the best fish and chips I’ve ever had, especially the chips. The lady that served me was trying to mange several trainees and, unfortunately, I don’t think my chips were seasoned. It was OK because I had a tub of very nice tartar sauce. Oh, and the onion rings are to die for. I hope to see other shops in the future, particularly closer to me.

Eaten from here a number of times and always been excellent. Tonight very disappointing. Fish and chips overcooked and dry, gluten free batter brittle, portion of peas small. I hope it's a blip, as it's normally so good. 1 star for atmosphere because irrelevant for takeaway.

Honestly I can’t fault the service, I ordered online shortly before closing and it was ready just as I arrived, the staff were super friendly as well. However, I do feel that the fish portion was quite small given the £7.80 price, and unfortunately, shortly after leaving (when I tucked in), the bottom was all mush and the batter soggy so it just stuck to the box. I’ve heard amazing things about this place and I’m quite sad it hasn’t panned out as expected. Mushy peas and chips were great.

Ordering was easy that’s the good bit!! The wait time kept going up and up until it was well over an hour from ordering to delivery. When the food arrived it had been delivered by a man on a bicycle. He was polite and friendly. The food was only warm not hot, the chips were soggy and the fish batter was soft. The mushy peas were dry. I was visiting Chester with my daughter as part of her birthday celebrations and staying in a hotel nearby. We fancied fish and chips one night and when you're in an area you don't know then you resort to Google Maps and reading reviews because you're not local and don't have the local knowledge (we're from Leicestershire). So, I just wanted to leave a review to help out for others in the same situation. Service was very friendly and as non-regulars this was very welcome. We ordered one portion of haddock and chips and one of cod and chips - both with mushy peas. Everything boxed up which was great as we planned to eat them in the car. The food was ready within a few minutes and it was excellent. They threw in a tub of their tartar sauce in addition to our order and that was top notch. Everything cooked to perfection and we really enjoyed it all. Just what we needed after a day trekking around Chester Zoo (which is not far away so anyone looking for fish and chips after a day at the zoo need look no further). It looks like "click and collect" is available through their web site so I'll keep this in mind for the future although we didn't have to wait long at all anyway and it's always nice to have a chat. I'll certainly be back next time I'm in Chester, great food, helpful and friendly service - couldn't want better. Thank you!

Wow the best fish for miles around, i live around 5 miles away from this chippy, and i travel past 3 chip shops to get to it, and it is definitely the best around for fish, (my husband will not have fish from anywhere else in chester) the fish is fresh and meaty, the batter is to die for always light and never greasy. Their mushy peas are just like ya gran used to make, i can not get enough of them, took my sister in law there when she came over from Ireland for a visit, she had been craving a proper chippy tea, ( can not shut her up bout it now), always lots of staff on, never had to wait long, very clean inside, and I personally have never had a bad experience with their food/staff/service.

The motto of this take away Chippie , the most expensive in Cheshire is rather humerous. Its , " Award Winning Fish & Chips dont need to cost the earth!! This is the Chippie that charges £3 for what they call a medium sized portion of Chips, about 15 chips in total . That equates to 20p per chip !! I was charged £25 , for 2x medium fish @ £6.50 each , 2x medium Chips ( with appallingly only 15 Chips, which works out at 20p per chip, £3 for a tiny portion of mushy peas & £3 for a tiny portion of tartare sauce. The portion sizes were perfect as a children or pensioners portion, but certainly not for a growing, hungry , middle aged man after a hard day's work. I felt like Oliver Twist when I dared to ask for a few extra Chips. I was met with a stern refusal by the charming female supervisor on duty. I thought shrinkflation was mainly the reserve of chocolate snacks with reduced sized chocolate bars , with Cadbury etc trying to maintain profit margins . However , shrinkflation now appears to have reach the Take away Chip shop sector , especially Weston Grove chippy , charging 20p per chip ( £3 for a box of 15). Sheer profiteering by the greedy directors . If they had an award for being the RIP off chippy of the year. Weston Grove would win the award hands down. Finally , customers do not really want to know where the Chips come from , do they . Or which boat caught the fish , which cannot be tasted anyway once its been smothered in your greasy batter and smothered in salt , vinegar tartare sauce, curry sauce etc. Award winning Fish and Chips don't have to cost the earth, I would change that motto if I were that business . Don't rub customers noses in it , while you charge those rip of prices for inadequate portions . Shrinkflation at its worst. Just because this Chippie has won a couple of awards , they think that gives the Chippie the green light to charge outrageous prices and reduce portion sizes in the meantime. Don't just take my word for it , just read other recrnt reviews from other disgruntled customers

I appreciate the brand building and PR campaigns but at the end of the day this chippie is not as special as it likes to thin it is. £7.80 for a Cod, £3.50 for a relatively small portion of chips… the value is poor and it’s expensive. I guess they try and justify through ‘best spurs’ sustainable this, sustainable that but at the end of the day the food doesn’t look or taste anything special. Nice food but not worth what the prices.

Ordered for delivery, we have done this multiple times & have always enjoyed the food. But this time the food was cold, greasy and the chips & peas were hard. Really disappointing as the portions are already small for the price you pay, so this is something we rarely get, as a treat. I'm aware it can get busy, but this tasted like it had been cooked & left. To the owner that replies to these reviews, it's one bad experience not a tear down of your entire business & those who work there. I get that the business is trying to offer sustainability in every single aspect of their business, BUT due to this I feel that the owners have lost perspective, they’re defensive and sarcastic in their responses to other reviewers but you can’t take away from the fact that cooking chips in palm oil makes them dry, and bland and hard work to chew! I gave up - didn’t eat very many of them at all. The number of poor reviews since 2019 about the quality of the chips should have woken them up to this. The prices are the most expensive I have ever paid for fish and chips (I get it - due to the sustainability), but for that sort of price you’d expect a tasty meal! If my only reason for eating here was to make a sustainable choice in life, I’d have been better off not eating a takeaway at all. There is a balance to be had! There is no balance here unfortunately. This used to be an amazing chippy. Now sadly, it would be tastier to eat the actual award rather the chips.

We used to love this chippy. We always made a conscious effort to go after we have been to Chester Zoo, we pick a quiet spot with the kids and eat our lovely meal in the car. We always savoured every morsel........not this time!! We were excited and looking forward to our meal, but the first thing that hit us was the price. Usual price for chips for our family, even good a chippy has been £20-£25 (max £30). The price for a very basic -take away 2 kids fish and chips, 2 adult fish, chips and peas, plus cans was £46.30!! I thought I had misheard the lady behind the counter. By comparison we went to an amazing fish and chips restaurant in Scarborough the week before and it was £50 for a family of four, as a sit in meal, with an amazing view of scarborough and alcohol. Everything was extra - tomato sauce - 50p; tartare sauce - extra. In the past, this chippy used to put a lemon in with the food and a sachet of tartare sauce. Not any more! The fish was lovely, I will give them that. However, the chips were dry as a bone and the staff didn't even ask if we wanted salt and vinegar, so we had to add this in the shop at one of the tables. When we did this, the staff asked "are you sitting in now?" (that would have cost extra), I had to explain there was no salt and vinegar, and even with the application of vinegar and salt, the chips remained dry and tasteless. The worst chips I have had in some time. Whereas, the chips used to be lovely from this place. We will not visit again in a hurry, it would have been cheaper to go to Dominoes next door....and that's saying something.

The short diversion in my long journey yesterday was well worth it. Chips were cooked to perfection, dry and crisp as they should be. The batter on the fish was crisp all round and not too thick, the fish inside being cooked to perfection. Both the batter and the fish were very tasty. Mushy peas were not too salty or sweet, and a good consistency, not runny or a solid blob. Probably the best fish and chips I have had this year! If I could give you all 0 stars I would. Allergen guidelines not followed, dreadful customer service, I was told there was nothing they can do, I was hung up on and then ignored, I was spoken to without any respect by the most clueless young man who clearly has no food safety training (or customer service training for that matter). As for the food, I couldn't even eat it because it was covered in vinegar, which I cannot eat. The curry sauce smelled nice at least, chips looked anemic, bruised and old, the so-called "battered sausage" had less batter on it than a fruit salad and the chicken strips were pitifully small. I'm now £17 lighter, hungry and shaking with anger at how I've been spoken to after asking for a simple resolution to THEIR MISTAKE. I wouldn't recommend these clueless, unprofessional and arrogant shopworkers to anyone. Steer well clear everyone. Poor showing Weston Grove, very poor. EDIT: Having read through your replies for other negative reviews, I have the feeling I'm going to get the exact same 'Oh Woe is Me'/"Thanks for hurting a family business" response - I have got in touch with Just Eat, hopefully I will find them to be more ept than yourselves. Me n the missus were passing through and thought we'd stop by. Food was great, served fresh and quick. Plenty of it and the curry sauce was to die for

Really over-rated chippy. Ordered 4 x regular chips for my family and got 4 x handful of chips in paper - we were all so shocked. Charged a fortune for the privilege too. We ended up going to another chip shop straight afterwards. We’re always...

Awful service. I have used this take away 6 or 7 times. Every time I have got home there have been items missing from the order. The chips are poor, soggy and palm….baffles me how a chip shop can’t cook chips properly. Fish is nice but how this place has won awards is beyond me. Vastly overpriced. Avoid

I am staying at BW for work and booked dinner at Hilltops on my first night. I was initially nervous that there didn't appear to be anything suitable for vegans on the menu, but I double checked with the receptionist, who was very helpful and communicated my request to the restaurant. This was a short-notice request, so I was not expecting much, but the chefs went above and beyond. The tofu & veg curry was really tasty, and the choc fudge cake was delicious. I couldn't eat it all in one sitting, but the team prepared the leftovers for me to take to my room and eat later. Thank you to the talented kitchen team and wonderful front of house team at Hilltops!

We were visiting the Anderton Boat Lift which is just 10 minutes down the towpath from The Moorings. As the coffee shop there was quite full after the boat trip we decided to try somewhere else close by. The Moorings is a little gem of a place, run by chefs, so expect hotel like presentation of excellent food, which is worth waiting for. This is a totally different dining experience from the usual canal side cafe. Dogs are allowed inside on the hard floor area, but we sat outside with ours as it was a beautiful day and we could admire the canal boats in the marina.
