The Faulkner in Cheshire West and Chester

Visitors to Chester staying around the corner happened to walk down the street and popped intially for a drink. Decided to eat, food was excellent. Great service, friendly atmosphere and reasonable prices. Well impressed.

Staff were excellent, friendly, genuinely interested in us having a nice time. Incredible peppercorn sauce. Great pub food, reasonable price. Its the staff thst really made a difference. Well done guys. We'll be back.

We first went onto the Faulkner a few weeks ago for Sunday lunch , which was delicious, so decided to return for my husband's birthday with family. It was curry night so 4 of us ordered Currys and 2 went with the usual menu. Currys came and were delicious, steak sandwich was inedable as the steak was definitely off (we could tell by the very rancid sour taste) and the fish and chips were also inedable as the fish was wet and unusually mushy, the chips were burnt on the outside and hard on the middle. Asked for replacements (daughter ordered a curry instead of the sandwich, which came quite quickly, we had all Finished our meals by the time my son in laws replacement meal came ! Won't be returning, we can understand 1 meal but 2 isn't right and both off the main menu !!!!!!!!!!

I don't really understand why it's so difficult for an eatery to get a Sunday roast so wrong. I always judge a roast on the quality of the spuds and these were under-cooked and then, obviously, kept warm for who knows how long. Red cabbage that had been cooked with far too much star anise that it simply tasted of liquorice and stem broccoli, a bow to some non-existent sophistication. No beef at 4.30 on a Sunday afternoon and just one portion of lamb left – which I was unfortunate enough to order – show poor kitchen management. Other meals I've enjoyed at the Faulkner have been fine – this meal was simply not good enough.

Just passing through Chester and found this pub with street parking right outside. The greeting was poor and it took 20 minutes before coming to take our order but the fish and chips were lovely. The young lady doing hostess didn’t seem interested in being there, spent most of time chatting the bar man and when I want to pay, she announced that there was already a tip included in my bill and I would have it removed if I wanted but that has to be a plan as it’s embarrassing to have it removed. All in all, just ok….

This was our first visit & I was really excited when I read the Menu. There many choices that I fancied trying. I chose the fish pie & husband picked fish & chips. Unfortunately everything on my plate was dry, I suspect it had been under the heat/ warmer lamp whilst the other meal was prepared. When the server came to check if all was OK I asked for butter. Immediately the dish was improved with butter added to mash topping & the peas. The foccacia was beyond rescue. The pie was packed with fish & was then very tasty . Husband wasn't as impressed with the size of fish especially as he had opted for large. His chips looked golden, but didn't taste as good as they looked, possibly warm ups? Or oil needed changing? Nice environment though we were th.e only diners in on January midweek lunch time. pleasant helpful staff. Will give it another go to try something else on the menu.

Roast dinner was adequate but not as good as the last time we visited.

Sunday roast extremely tasty but disappointed with portion sizes and the high cost of any extras. The Food also needs to be served hotter as it was only tepid and the Yorkshire’s were cold. The manager saved the day by bringing some hot gravy with fresh Yorkshire puddings. The service was generally slow - having to wait 10 minutes plus for the drinks to be delivered and having to ask to order the food - after waiting over 15 minutes with menu. No salt and pepper on table and cranberry sauce not delivered until meal virtually fully eaten. Staff very friendly and possibly short staffed during our visit? We paid £140 for 4 adults and 2 young children for 4 roast dinners, 2 children’s dinners, 2 children’s ice creams and drinks. Happy with cost if portion sizes were increased as I left still Hungary! I would try again if not for the small portions.

The Club Sandwich was absolutely spot on, tasty and fresh. Service was great too. Only small negative was the pub was a bit on the cold side, otherwise everything great, including the music!

When I visited 4 or 5 days ago it was freezing.

Poor ales, lots missing from menu, poor service

Yesterday 29th November 2024 a group of us from our Aqua group joined me at the Faulkner and what a fabulous, fantastic time we had, the food was prefect from stater,main to the sweet,the service was spot on,the atmosphere was brilliant we all had a bloody good time and what inpressed me was the honestly I was given 2 different menu's and the one we ordered from wasnt the one we should of and every one was handed back the extra money we all paid.So from us all a massive big thank to you at the Faulkner arms 🥰 Sandy,Karen,sheryl,carole,Ali,Trish,Eileen,Mo,Marie,Sue,Mo 🎄🎉🍲

This bar is a great place to visit for everyone and the bar staff are very friendly. It’s clean and welcoming with decent background music. We arrived shortly after they put up their Chrissie decis which was an added bonus! The menu choice has a good selection and the food is very tasty and well cooked.

Great service from all the staff. The food was loveky and well cooked. We ordered a pizza along with peppered steak sandwiches, which we asked to be altered slightly (no pepper sauce on one and chunky chips on another). This was noted and done without a fuss. The pub is lovely inside and with a very warm, welcoming atmosphere 😀

Visiting Chester for the weekend and The Faulkner was one of the first pubs we noticed. The menu sounded great so we decided to give it a try. Staff were all very friendly on arrrival and service was very good. We shared some starter dishes and were all very impressed. Would definitely recommend

The staff were brilliant, catered for all our needs, and went hand over foot to help us, felt comfortable and safe in this pub, really loved it, the selection of drinks were great and I was given a taster of a Cornwall ale even though I didn't ask for it, not something I would have normally ordered but after the lovley smooth taste definitely on my list. We only went for starters as we were not so hungry, and it was a good rich portion of katsu chips, chilli beef chips. Really good atmosphere. I will be back here again. Thank you for looking after us!

We booked here very last minute on a weekend trip away. The front of house staff member (unsure of his name but he had broken his wrist) was very welcoming and accommodating. I am a wheelchair user and he was so helpful with gaining access into the pub and made me feel at ease. To do all of this on an extremely busy Saturday night with an injured arm but with a friendly disposition was very commendable. The food took a little longer to arrive due to being so busy but it was fresh, tasty and made with quality ingredients. We also enjoyed the cocktails. Thank you for a great visit!

Outstanding professional service, My pint of Guineas was served as it should be, and it went down very well, i will be returning for a food and will indulge in their Guinness, Grade A+

Unfortunately very sad, service was very slow, starting with cocktails, glasses wasn’t full, charging £9 per cocktail, main course took at least 1 hour, not good, puds not good either, don’t bother going at this moment. Hopefully reading this it should get better. Beware of surcharge wtf

Delicious Sunday roast. The beef was so tender and the vegetables were crisp. We will be back. A lively little gasto pub n the heart of the community.Staff very attentive.

Only one of four real ale pumps was working at 5:30pm on a Friday evening. What kind of pub is so ill-prepared for the weekend? The one available was a porter and I think that is an unsuitable session ale. We stayed for dinner and my choice of fish and chips was most disappointing. By orange colour of both, the cooking oil was old. The chips were exceptionally crispy, bordering too hard and uncomfortable to eat. When I pressed my fork into them, I saw oil ooze out. At the time I thought I was eating re-heated leftovers. It was quite a horrible experience. The only good part of the experience was the service. The two bar staff were friendly and cheerful.

We were sat by the speaker blaring out too-loud music (the crowd was our age so this isn’t old codgers moaning). I like to talk over the meal. Food was overcooked - flat breads too crisp and pies scorched on the outside and undercooked within. Bake over time on a low flame please. Service was good - I got the impression the server would have appreciated better kitchen service.

The Faulkner is a great little pub. I popped in for a pint with a friend who lived in the area, and I won't lie, I wish we could have stayed longer. The service was quick, professional and friendly, the interior of the bar was nice, clean and welcoming, and the little beer garden we sat in was delightful. Will definitely be popping back to visit!

This establishment is about who knows who. The owner is a coward. Every person has a human right to be heard and to be listened too. The person who runs this establishment.. alienates good people because they’re not in his crowd. So if you want an open place to drink and spend time with your friends.. the Faulkner is not it xx

Went here when staying in Chester from the moment we walked in the service was amazing the lovely Katie looked after us and was so warm and friendly the food was absolutely gorgeous and so reasonably priced and the rest of the staff were extremely friendly a must if you are in n chester

Friendly service in a local pub. Food was decent but not quite gastronomic. Good beer and wine selection. I'd go back.

We changed last minute to this venue partly due to the wonderful customer service by Tom. All the team were great, very accommodating and friendly. Superb food in both quantity and quality. Strongly recommend. Thanks to all.

Went for food this evening, everything from start to finish was perfect. Amber was very welcoming, the lad that took our order was also amazing (didn't get his name 🙈) The food was so good, we had the 5 dishes for £25 and a couple of side dishes between 3 of us, just perfect for a sunny afternoon.

There’s been a few new owners / management the past few years and I feel like they are finally getting it right in here 😊 they’ve turned half into a bit more of a bar area with high tables and stools so you do now feel you can just go in for a drink with the other side being more for eating. The menu has gotten much better again, lovely atmosphere with live music and the staff really friendly and attentive

Really glad we went, food was really nice, service was really good. Especially from a young lad who seemed to be in charge of front of house, might have been called Tom because that was on our receipt. He made sure we knew everything we needed to and was polite and attentive without bothering us all the time, refreshing compared to what you normally get these days! The steak I had was like butter when cutting, it was delicious.

I am so surprised with the low reviews!! My husband and I have been coming to the Faulkner for over 10 years and since it was taken over in Feb 2024 the atmosphere and food is amazing 10 out of 10 👍 The staff are lovely and can’t help you enough and the food is to die for… I think the rest of you giving poor comments need to get your pallets checked and don’t go somewhere there is great atmosphere if you are a bore!! Staff were very welcoming when we arrived, had to keep my jacket on as it was cold could of had the heating on, food was ok, flat bread or pitta bread was dry, my dish was tasty though had the meatballs. When we got the bill, the service charge was already on. The waiter asked if we wanted to leave it on, which made us feel obliged to.

Lovely atmosphere and staff. Dog friendly. Live music. Great location

I came here with my partner to try out the place since being taken over. The customer service was warm and welcoming. But sadly that where it ends. The food wasn’t up to par, quite bland and tasteless. It such a shame as things started off well. We won’t be rushing to return

Under new ownership and is now much improved. Previous owners seemed to cripple the place with no staff, and a generally miserable vibe. It’s now back up and running with new decor more seats, dog and baby friendly, very helpful for us! Enjoy!

Music was too loud. Couldn’t hear ourselves to converse. There was no bitter, but more than one perhaps even more than two lagers and two types of stout, but no bitter and IPA X 2 don’t count either. The food was okay but not up to the standards of a recent owner. The staff were very friendly. I won’t be returning anytime soon because of the limited drinks choice

Fantastic customer experience, we were made to feel very welcome from the moment we arrived. Staff very friendly and attentive without being overbearing, food good too. Would definitely be here regularly if we lived locally.

Drinks are slightly above average price wise. We have visited here twice. 1st time place was nearly empty & lacked any kind of atomosphere even a welcoming one. 2nd time was over xmas period & it was busy with diners, but didnt feel festive

Christmas menus Wow the meal was amazing portion large and cooked lovely was very impressed. Quite expensive but the food was well worth it . When we are on our holidays in chester we always visit the faulkner

Amazing roast dinners. 2 gammon,1 turkey & 1 roast beef. Cauliflower cheese extra side would highly recommend. Waitress lovely. Service fabulous.

Booked a table weeks in advance & I asked did we need to pre order if we wanted the festive menu & was told as there was only 4 of us, no, we didnt need to pre book. When ordering on the night, we were then told there was no turkey left for that night, only enough left for lunch the next day. We asked to speak to the manager who advised the same, we told him we had been told we didnt need to pre book & our party was very disappointed as we wanted the festive menu, he advised he couldn't do anything! So we then had to decide on a another main however, there was other things from the festive menu they had ran out of! Main menu is very limited too. I opted for cod loin & for the price, I was shocked at how small a meal it was, no potatoes or vegetables to bulk it up. This is the first time we have eaten in the Faulkner & probably the last. A group of friends out for their Xmas meal & no turkey left. Extremely disappointing!

Went with a friend for lunch. The staff were lovely. We had a small plate, garlic mushrooms on sourdough toast. It was so tasty.

Food was terrific. We had nachos to share, tomatoes on sourdough plus tobacco fried onions. Absolutely exceeded expectations and the quality was well worth the price. Service was friendly and professional. Will definitely return, highly recommended.

We went for a Sunday Roast. The Yorkshire puddings are massive! All the dishes were great. Staff were very polite and friendly. Well worth a visit.

Came for Sunday lunch was standard pub feed, nice gravy tho. Was very confused however about the table we were sat on, the face surface had been striped and sanded down to the bare wood(pine I believe) and the budding DIYer hadn’t put any finishing oil or sealant on there. This left it exposed to condensation(oh no cleo)from pint glasses and any bit of food or drops of gravy stains that looked like the gusset of a pair of my pants after the oxygen ride at may fair 2016. Not very appetising or hygienic either as their will be no proper way of cleaning the surface, unless you were to sand it down after every cover which I imagine could be quite impractical. Also the salt grinder had pepper init even had a white S engraved on the top and all. Not sure if owner is a fan of White Chicks or was just unable to distinguish this detail

Came here with my girlfriend on a date night and neither of us left disappointed, we both enjoyed both the food and the staff throughout with the food being increasable from the new menu and and floor staff on point like clockwork making us feel looked after. Unfortunately we dident get the name of our server but she was great and the guy running the floor luca managed to make our night with his bubbly attitude We will be sure to come again soon and I'd recommend anyone else to come down too

Popped in for a quick bite to eat, had some lovely halloumi skewers, some fries and a pint of cask. Everything’s was spot on, but the highlight was the outstanding service. Everyone’s was friendly and professional. Definitely worth a visit!

Lovely place to pop in for some lunch and a drink whilst waiting for the train. Staff were lovely, approachable and helpful. The food we had tasted excellent and portions were sized well. Would stop by again!

Very little to choose for vegetarian, I chose from the starter menue mushrooms on toast , it was yummy , husband disappointed no pie available opted ham( cold) couldn't eat it too stringy , so a little disappointing

Visiting Chester for a few days so we wanted to find somewhere local for a Sunday lunch. Highly recommend The Faulkner - food was delicious & it was lovely sitting by the window on a warm day. Highly recommend if you're in the area.

Had the homemade pork pie and the piccalilli and was absolutely delicious the piccalilli was homemade and was the best I’ve ever tasted. Then opted for the sea bass with crushed new potatoes in lemon butter and caper sauce with Samphire and it was delicious. No complaints although was a little surprised that they don’t allow dogs in the bar which is unusual for a pub but we did sit outside the back under cover

Sunday lunch - expensive, poor quality meat and very little for the £17.95. First time here for food but we will not be back in a rush. Drinks were good - cheers.

Booked for Sunday lunch, we ordered 3 beef dinners & drinks. After 10 minutes there was no sign of the drinks so had to go and chase them up. The dinners were served, the waiter put them down and then walked off. We had no cutlery or offer of condiments, I had to get knives, forks and serviettes off an adjacent table, had to go to the bar to ask for sauces. The meal for £17.95 was awful, one piece of beef, 2 hard potatoes, 1 carrot and a huge pile of uncooked Kale, gravy was luke warm and the only edible thing was the Yorkshire pudding. It wasn’t fitting of the description of seasonal veg & triple cooked roasties. We didn’t eat the meal, we sent it back and refused to pay. It really spoilt our afternoon. Such a shame as the Faulkner used to be known for its quality food and have had many nice meals here over the years. Sadly it seems to have gone downhill, it was half empty on a bank holiday Sunday whilst every other bar & restaurant in Hoole was buzzing, will never return.

Really good food and very friendly staff. Definitely recommend for a cozy date night or family dinner .

We went there for a lovely day a few weeks ago, my wife went for her hair done, meant to be a lovely afternoon , ordered the rib eye steak medium, shocking, triple cooked chips, shocking, my wife ordered sea bass said it was lovely, would I spend that money again, no waste of of an ok wine!!!

We got Sunday roasts, one beef one vegan, and they were absolutely delicious. The gravy and the potatoes were spot on. Only downside is that the portions could have been slightly more generous for the price. Still would definitely return :)

Quickly became our local when in Hoole. Great drinks selection and always friendly service. Cosy and warm interior with great little outdoor snug for drinks outside decked out with cushions and blankets.

Excellent Sunday Lunch. Went with mum for Sunday lunch. First time visitors. The service was very friendly and professional. The food was absolutely delightful. Came away in foodie heaven. Definitely recommend, and would happily return.

I had Sunday lunch here a few weeks ago. The meet was cold and the gravy was unbelievably salty.

Food was good and atmosphere was pleasant. Staff were a bit overwhelmed at times as it was busy.

Nice place but should be dog friendly in more than just the tiny courtyard.

Visited earlier this week top marks all round. Food and service second to none. Ribeye steak and pie were quality. Nice venue good vibe well worth a visit
