We booked a Mother’s Day meal for 12 of us, all paid our deposits, and were looking forward to a lovely meal together. However, what we got was an absolute shambles from start to finish. When we arrived, our table was only set for 8. The staff told us that we had called up that morning to cancel 4 places—something that absolutely did not happen. Instead of rectifying the situation properly, they brought in garden furniture for 2 of us, and our children had to sit at a completely separate table. Not exactly the family meal we had planned. Things only got worse from there. We waited over an hour just to receive drinks, and when they finally arrived, they didn’t even have most of what we ordered. Some of us were left without drinks entirely, without so much as an explanation. They had ran out of wine, soda, blackcurrant and orange which we only found out when my sister ended up going up to the bar to ask where are drinks are. My sister then ended up serving our drinks for us—completely unacceptable! The place was clearly overbooked and chaotic, with staff completely unable to keep up. The food was terrible. We ordered three courses, but by dessert, they had run out of meringue and served us a bowl of bananas and cream that looked like mush. The “raspberry Eton mess” was swapped for rock-hard brownies that were barely edible. To top it all off, they gave us the wrong bill, then later corrected it—but even then, it was so confusing we couldn’t understand it. They claimed they had taken some meals off for the inconvenience, but we still felt like we were overcharged for such a dreadful experience. The only positives? The singer was good, and the staff were friendly—but they were clearly overwhelmed. It’s a real shame, but we will never be returning. Honestly, I can’t believe this place has such high ratings.

Having been a regular here standards have slipped since it has changed owners, came for breakfast this morning only waited a few minutes for our breakfast which was all overcooked, the bacon and blackpudding were burnt, the beans were cold what there was of them, the egg was hard and dry, and a dollop of marge was thrown in the middle of the toast, this is so different than the lovely piping hot breakfast, and in the past, the floor was dirty, the toilets havent been cleaned and on stepping outside a rat ran across the entrance. We will never be returning it was disgusting.

What a farce, 4 of us went for lunch, we placed our order then after about 10 minutes came out to advise the one starter we’d ordered wasn’t available. So I decided to skip the starter, then they came back and advised that 2 of the mains weren’t available. We asked if the gammon and egg came with one egg or two as we only wanted one. After being told it only comes with one it was served with two. One main was served with chips instead of mash. The staff then appeared to forget that we were there, while they were quick to attend to customers coming in. We waited a long time after the main course and I lightheartedly told them we were feeling neglected. We asked about desserts and were told they had 2 portions of lemon meringue left and some other options. We asked for 1 lemon meringue, 1 chocolate ice cream, 1 apple pie with ice cream and 1 apple pie with custard. We received 1 lemon tart (lemon meringue without the meringue) but served with lemon sorbet, 1 chocolate cake with chocolate ice cream which was sent back, and as there was no vanilla ice cream 2 apple pie and custard, we ordered coffee, which never came. The staff had now gone to ground and we had to go to the counter to request the bill, we’d given up on the coffee ( went to Costa instead).

I was a bit apprehensive about meeting here as I’d read the previous reviews but we were really pleased with our visit, hence why I felt I needed to write this review. Staff were really friendly & the cafe was really busy with a big table already here when we arrived. The food was delicious & a good selection to choose from. Service was a little slow but when we paid the manager explained there was a wake upstairs & a staff member had called in sick, so she apologised. She’d called for her husband to come in & help. We’ll return again if in the area. Please support this business as it’s nice to see a coffee shop that’s not a big corporate chain 😊

We were in the area so stopped in. The place was empty other than what I presumed were the owners and some friends sat at near by table. We came in at about 2pm on a Sunday expecting it to be busy, but the place was lacking in any atmosphere. It wasn’t helped by 1 of the men snorting his snot loudly at the table. We persevered and ordered 2 roasts. The food was served shortly after, cold, meat dry, cheap ingredients. Worst tasting potatoes I’ve had in a long time. We both left about half of our portions and didn’t opt to have a dessert (all though we usually do, I knew from having the main it would probably not be very nice) waitress didn’t ask us if we enjoyed our meals, she could probably tell from what was left on the plate. My husband also mentioned to me that his Guinness was warm. What a shame warm beer and cold food.

The breakfasts we could see on peoples tables as we arrived looked really nice, we had arrived hungry, we had an hour and were really looking forward to eating. We arrived and were seated. It was odd that the tables had large wine glasses on the tables, given this was a breakfast service, but No Problem, they were quickly removed. We chose what we were have, and waited. And waited, and yes waited some more. I eventually went to the desk to put in our order. We were hungry. "Can I have pancakes with mixed berries and syrup please". "Sorry No, we dont have mixed berries". No Problem, "Can I have the pancakes with the strawberries please" "Sorry No, we don't have strawberries". Both items were on the menu, but, again, No Problem. Once we reselected, and gave in order order, the teas arrived quickly. I prefer to have my tea with my food but again, No Problem. So we waited, husband went for a walk, came back, we waited. It must have been waiting at least a further 45 minutes when we were informed, sorry, our order didn't go through the computer, and with pen and pad in hand asked if we'd like to reorder. Oh, Big Problem. Our hour was pretty much over, and definitely not enough time to order, wait and eat and so we left, to one more 'sorry'. While I'm sure it was a computer clich, nd maybe a one off, I feel had the staff been more attentive of us from the start, taken the tiniest moment to come over to chat to us while we were clesrly waiting, the problem would have been resolved sooner and i wouldnt have felt the need to write this review. We left hangry and disappointed as the food really did look lovely. Wish we'd had some of it. Tea was on the house.

Really awful place. When we arrived, one of the girls sprayed the antibac on the table with the cutleries around - we had to ask for clean ones as they were full of antibac on and she hasn’t even bothered to change them herself. When we asked for the the roast, no one knew what they had in stock for the day. I asked for no carrots because of allergies but yet the carrots were on my plate (pictures attached). I asked for extra vegetables and there were no vegetables. My husband ordered the chicken cesar salad and they brought the one with vinegar instead. Glasses dirty like they haven’t been washed in months. Avoid at all cost - so many better places around.

Not good. Long delay in waiting for food although the place was empty. Food not good really, ham was tasteless. Friends had fish and chips and the batter was uncooked. Ok it's rare that I write such a negative review as I prefer to write positive ones for restaurants that I have enjoyed... however this was so poor that I had to post up. We were up shopping for the day and stayed in the nearby hotel and booked into this restaurant for dinner. They had a Fleetwood Mac tribute band on with 3 courses for £30, which seemed great value. We stayed in this same hotel and dined at this same restaurant some years ago, when we were on a similar shopping break and we thought that the restaurant was so good for dinner on the Saturday night that we went back for Sunday lunch the next day and this was delicious too... so we had high expectations. The venue has not changed much since we visited many years ago, the welcome was friendly and generally the staff were pleasant and the service was ok. The starters were average, but we ate the majority of them as we were hungry. We both ordered a Turkey roast for main as we were so impressed with the roast on our previous visit... This was simply the worst meal I have ever been served in my life, we seriously racked our brains for anything that could compete and noting came close! The turkey very was dry, it was on a bed of mash that was edible , the sprouts were boiled to death and had no texture and were barely edible too and then things got really bad... the gravy tasted of vinegar and was sour, the roasted potatoes, parsnips and carrots were totally dehydrated and we couldn't even bring ourselves to eat them they were that bad. It was strange as they were not burnt, just dried out with no moisture or glisten of oil on them at all. In fact they looked like they were made of cardboard, I can't imagine how someone could get them to this stage!! It takes a special type of chef to take fresh ingredients and mess them up so badly that they bear no resemblance to what they started out as. When our plates were taken the waitress asked if everything was ok and I apologetically told her it was terrible and said that I felt obliged to give her the feedback. To be fair what looked like the owner/manager came over and asked us about our feedback and we gave her our opinion and said to just take a look at the food we were served. She was lovely and took the feedback well and also offered us a couple of free drinks as a gesture of goodwill. Which was nice, but we just wanted to eat as we had bought a bottle of Prosecco and many vodka and lemonades already... We were still hungry so for desert we ordered a chocolate brownie and a Black Forest gateau, thinking that surely you can't get these wrong... how wrong we were! The brownie was rock solid and really dense, we couldn't break into it and the gateau was just dry and crumbly with really cheap jam on top, not rich and moist as it should be, so we had one bite of each and left the rest. The waitress again came over and asked if everything was ok and I didn't have the heart to tell her the truth so just nodded as she said "are you full and can't manage anymore?" So all in all a very disappointing experience, I just wish I had taken pictures of the food. I'm not sure what happened as reviews of the restaurant seem generally positive however our experience was totally the opposite!

We came here for Sunday brunch, and although the place was busy with two large groups, we were shown to a table straight away. The staff were polite and friendly, and the place was clean, with a decent atmosphere. There was plenty to choose from on the menu and we didn’t have long to wait for our food. The food was good; nice quality with reasonable sized portions, and it was hot. One thing I will say is that it does get quite noisy when it’s busy, as there’s not a lot to absorb the noise, but it’s bearable, and there’s a decent amount of room around the tables, so it doesn’t feel cramped. Happy to recommend.

Disappointing breakfast. The staff were lovely, but I thought the restaurant smelled of oil from cooking, a greasy smell not a nice food smell. Our table looked a bit grubby too. I ordered eggs Benedict, both eggs were hard, bacon was over cooked too. The muffin was very lightly toasted and looked grey inside and the sauce looked and tasted as though it was from a carton. My friends English breakfast was cold but looked ok. We won’t be returning unfortunately which is a shame as we’ve been a handful of times previously and it was nice. Nice canal setting though.

We have always been regulars for breakfast at the Port & Anchor. Knowing it was under new management we wanted to support. It was the most disappointing meal I have ever eaten. There were lots of staff who were absolutely clueless. We advised waitress we were ready to order food and drinks but she told us she could only take drinks order!!! Drinks arrived one by one and as placed down poured over the table. Clearly no training given of how to carry a tray! Eventually we were allowed to order food! Coffee and tea arrived 10 mins later served by a man in a cap and tracksuit ( not a very professional look) he handed me a spoon that I have just seen him wipe on his pants! The breakfast was disappointing, cheap sausages, no butter and then missing items. The place was incredibly busy, each table had an issue with their order or the service and yet they kept taking more bookings. Staff training here will be key to the success of this new business. Such a shame as a lovely location but new owners clearly haven’t run a restaurant before.

We were looking forward to this place having read some reviews and looked at the menu. To have such a place on our doorstep, never been before. We came for lunch, they have a great selection of drinks, restaurant layout and atmosphere is lovely too. We ordered the proper fish finger butty and club sandwich with chips. Huge portions, I couldn’t finish the club, and the finish finger butty was two small battered fillets, very nice indeed. We were missing the mushy peas and side salad with the fish finger butty and the chips were extremely dark in colour and floppy/soft. Could be the oil maybe. That was the only let down for me. Expected them to be crunchy. I have to say though, for the price, location and the fact they host tribute events, we will be back to try again.

Not very welcoming at all, Gammon really undercooked fat was raw, hand cut chips definitely frozen crumbly bits, one egg not two for the price we paid we'd expected better don't waste your money.

Their website said that they were open and we walked from nearby hotel to visit there to eat and they were closed and the web page still says open

Beautiful day. A bit of a breeze sat outside on the patio area with my doggie and my cousin, watching the tugs and the ships going to the refinery. The menu was well priced . Food was most enjoyable. Service great.

Wonderful service! We had booked for a large party to sit and order off the menu for our Nan's 90th birthday. The staff were very welcoming, efficient and the food was beautifully cooked. They handled our large party (30 + of us) so well. Highly recommend 5⭐️ Thank you to the Port & Anchor team for looking after us all so well.

I don’t normally write reviews, but after visiting the Port & Anchor, I was that blown away, I just had to leave one. After a hectic shopping session at Cheshire Oaks with the wife, a friend recommended we try the Port & Anchor. As it was local (8 min drive), we were met by fantastic staff who were only too pleased to help. We were blown away by the food options including the specials board. The lambs liver and the salt and pepper seafood basket was to die for. To top it off was the bill which was very easy on the wallet. Thank you for a lovely meal and we will DEFINITELY be returning

Been here a few times for lunch, afternoon tea and evening meal but I've never left a review. We went for brunch in April. Mum had eggs royale, I had eggs Benedict. Food was delicious and really good value as included a hot drink. Restaurant was very clean. The staff were very friendly and Laura specifically asked if I wanted less salt in my toddlers meal and brought him child's cutlery which was really thoughtful. Always love the location especially on a sunny day.

I have been to the Port & Anchor many times since it opened for breakfasts, lunches and evening meals and have always received a warm and friendly welcome from all the staff. I have even booked here for a function where everyone who attended commented on what such a lovely venue it is. The food is always top notch and the tribute act nights are always spot on.

We often visit the Port & Anchor for breakfast with our family. We are always welcomed by all of the staff and they always make a fuss of our little girl which we think is so lovely. This makes us feel relaxed and at ease immediately. The food is always delicious and service is always excellent. Thank you for always being so lovely!

Absolutely awesome meal very sensibly priced. Service was excellent. But they could do more for the disabled. Only one disabled parking space and this was already taken.
