Visiting Chester for a few days, we happened on the Cross Keys on our last night, which was their quiz night, but the landlord ensured we felt included. For us it’s a “proper” pub, it reminded us of when we used to have a “ local”. Thank you for the warm welcome.

One of the most welcoming and friendly Bars we have had the pleasure of visiting! A friend of ours recommended it highly for the ' Crack' and my god did we have a laugh from Dave and Jane the proprietors to the 'three wise men' at the bar! What an evening of laughter and great friends made. We live abroad but we will be definitely coming back to Chester to visit this unique and wonderful bar Our words here would not do justice to such a great place. Thank you

Started going to quiz night on Thursdays and just been for a Sunday lunch. Can’t believe we haven’t discovered this lovely pub before having lived in Chester on and off all my life! Such a lovely friendly atmosphere. Bar staff are so friendly and Jane and Dave make you feel so welcome. We have been to several quizzes and this is by far the best. There is a great raffle where you have a chance of winning quite a lot of money. Quiz master very funny and great atmosphere. The pub has a nice bit of history to it too and a macabre tale or two. The Sunday roast was lovely. Beef was fantastic - it is often hard with beef to get it right but this was non fatty and tender. Came with cauliflower cheese, gravy and Yorkies! My hubby had lovely pork scratching with his meal. The waiters were very friendly and helpful and couldn’t do enough for you. Will definitely return for lunch and we will be regulars at the quiz now

This is a traditional pub, part of the Joules chain,so nice ales in a spot close to the river Dee and the old Dee bridge.Theres a row of outdoor seating which is a great suntrap and a good spot for people watching too! Also good for Sunday lunch, and when they run out later on,the surplus roast potatoes are free in the bar,a nice touch. We are locals and enjoyed our visit on a sunny afternoon today.

¡No puedo esperar a volver!

Been meaning to write a review about this place! We came here for Sunday dinner on February 16th. My partner and I had stayed the weekend in Chester and when We was in a pub we overheard someone saying how good this place was, and they wasn’t wrong! When we walked in the ambience was nice and it was quite full with only 2 tables left, one of which was ours! We was seated and told when we are ready to let the staff know when we would like to eat. After looking around and seeing other plates we couldn’t wait much longer! Our dinner of roast pork (we had a choice of beef or pork) came with all the trimmings! It was delicious! Then came the boat of gravy, oh my it was literally a boat of tasty gravy! All the veg and trimmings were just right! The only thing I had fault for was the fat on the pork which would of been nice if it was crispy or even crackling! Apart from that little minor thing everything was spot on! I would defo recommend and I would definitely come back here to eat if I’m in Chester! I will post pics x

I had heard a few good stories about this pub from a friend of mine,I had been out for a nice walk around the walls with my partner and we were looking at places to go for something to eat in the future with a couple of friends,we went in and I went to the bar and had a bit of banter with a local,I happened to notice the barman leaning over the bar having a quiet glance at what I was wearing, upon ordering half a lager for my partner and a glass of coke for myself(I was driving)the barman said,I can’t serve you as you are wearing track suit bottoms, they were towelling jog pants just plain with no flash markings on them,to be honest I was a bit taken back especially when the next man to the bar looked like a tramp who had no problem getting served,I am a 55 year old grandad and ceo of a company employing people and feel like I was singled out on this occasion.

Picked the cross keys simply because I really really fancied a Sunday dinner and the reviews where good . it’s a joules pub so that means you are guaranteed an excellent real ale selection, the sign outside stated Sunday lunch from 12 till gone ! Got two pints and two beef dinners approx 30 quid not cheap but not really extravagant. Well I must say that the Sunday beef dinners we were served were the best ones We have ever ever eaten that wasn’t cooked by our mum or nan. Excellent ! Beef was great, cut from a real joint, topped with a delicious fried onion rostie, the veg is exceptional, incredible real roasties sprinkled with rosemary, well cooked cauli, green beans with bacon and well cooked carrots, big crispy Yorkshire and topped with a large sauce boat of exceptional tasty gravy. The guys on the bar and serving where great and really welcoming . We left at three and the last two beef dinners were served just before then ! Twelve till gone ! Outstanding!Couldn’t fault it !

First day ever in Chester and it was a Sunday, so what better than a Sunday roast? Well, there were other plans but we were passing, were thirsty and the menu looked good, so we stopped. Not disappointed, pint of Pale for me and half of slumbering for her....nice quality brews if I say so. Traditional roast beef, roasties, yorkshires and plenty of veg stacked high, very tasty and a wonderful crumble for me (the good lady had to pass some roast to me to ensure no wastage). All round top marks, we even enjoyed the extremely retro early 70's music!!!

We made a booking the day before as recommended outside the venue. Our reserved table was clearly visible when we walked in the next day. We were given two meal choices, either beef or pork. We chose beef and when our food arrived it was hot and we had a large selection of vegetables on our plate. The roast potatoes were very big, fluffy and the best we have enjoyed for a long time. The gravy was served separately in a jug. The adult Sunday lunch serving at £9.95 is a large portion so make sure you have an empty stomach before you arrive. There is also a starter and dessert available at an additional cost. We would recommend that you visit here for Sunday lunch. Me and my wife visited this evening and were disgusted by the service. A young male served us, he was nice, kind and warm. I asked for no lemon in my drink which is the norm for me, and my wife had a 175ml of red wine. Once the young chap had taken our payment, I noticed another male shouting at him for putting a lemon in my drink, I saw the young lad explain that I didn't want a lemon but he was ridiculed for it. By the time I went over to explain, the man had stormed off, I was the young lad if he was okay, but he seemed a little stunned. We stayed in the pub for about 20 minutes, I noticed twice, the older gentleman slating the young male to other people in the pub, and for some reason finding it hilarious. What me and my wife saw was literal workplace bullying. This was our first time in Chester, we weren't expecting this.Disappointing. J.

The ale house itself was warm with a roaring log fire, Ales in good condition and served at the correct temperature,As it was my birthday they brought out a few cakes for us which we thought was a lovely touch When we are visiting again it will be the first place we will find. Thankyou to all

Wonderful place that still has a proper landlord and landlady. They're two great people who welcomed myself and my friend from London. Lovely beer, open fire, cosy spots to sit either at the bar or in a snug corner somewhere.Thoroughly recommend

Eaten here previously so know the ins & outs, good value, quality food in a clean friendly atmosphere. A pub worth seeking out for the food & particularly the beer always well kept. Really important to the landlord & landlady that everything is up to scratch..This is the best real ale pub in Chester

We called in here on a lovely sunny but cold Sunday, the sun was streaming through the stunning windows and there was a lovely real fire. We had already eaten but wished we hadn't as the Sunday roast dinners looked fabulous. Wish we had found this pub earlier in out trip to Chester.

Visited this pub for a drink initially. The atmosphere is great. Really good old school decor but clean as a whistle and tidy. The log fire was really warming on a cold Octobers day. Planned on eating elsewhere but gave the Sunday lunch a try. Well, I'm glad we did because it was one of the best I've had. I highly recommend a Sunday lunch at this place. Really quality! With a tasty home made gravy.

As a resident of Chester we occasionally like to go out for Sunday Lunch. The cross keys is a unique Victorian pub. It has suffered through several changes in management over recent years. However I have to say the current couple who are running it have created a very welcoming environment and the Sunday lunch my wife and I had was the best I have experienced in Chester, accept for my wife of course. The challenge will be attracting new customers and maintaining a high standard of cleanliness and a warm welcome. There are many excellent pubs in Chester who are well run and I would suggest to go and see what they are doing, Harkers, the Ship in Handbridge and the Architect. The Cross Keys deserves to be up there with the best. I recommend that you give it a visit and tell your friends about it. Thank you for a lovely meal service and excellent bottle of wine.

Always great cask ales available in surroundings that are comfortable and cozy wood panelled traditional pub. Pies are made with meat from animals fed on the produce of the brewing process. Friendly, knowledgable staff. Great place for a pie and a few pints. Brewery trips also available at certain times of the year.

In an area of outstanding pubs The Cross Keys Pub is another superb pub i love to go to on any visit to Chester. We had already been to The Bear & Billet Pub,The Falcon Pub,Brewery Tap and Ye Olde Kings Head Pub before we payed this pub a visit. It's a pub we have been to on many occasions as it's such a great place to enjoy some quality beer's. The pub interior is amazing with a small raised serving bar,the wall's are festooned with all forms of beer and pub ephemera, stained glass windows and plenty of seating options plus an outside seating area. We ordered the pubs signature real ale and opted for Joules Slumbering Monk and this ale was served in tip top condition and we just chilled out in this superb pub.I love pubs like this and Chester has a fair amount of quality pubs very similar and on our two days staying over in this beautiful city we visited a fair few of them. This pub is the tap house for Joules Brewery ,this is a delicious beer that has been around since 1758 and is just so tasty. We moved on after our delicious beer's but as on every other visit to here we had a great time. Very easy to locate on Duke Street. Opening hours are;Monday to Saturday, midday till 11pm. Sunday, midday till 10.30pm.A fabulous pub in a great location and well worth checking out.

I am staying at BW for work and booked dinner at Hilltops on my first night. I was initially nervous that there didn't appear to be anything suitable for vegans on the menu, but I double checked with the receptionist, who was very helpful and communicated my request to the restaurant. This was a short-notice request, so I was not expecting much, but the chefs went above and beyond. The tofu & veg curry was really tasty, and the choc fudge cake was delicious. I couldn't eat it all in one sitting, but the team prepared the leftovers for me to take to my room and eat later. Thank you to the talented kitchen team and wonderful front of house team at Hilltops!

We were visiting the Anderton Boat Lift which is just 10 minutes down the towpath from The Moorings. As the coffee shop there was quite full after the boat trip we decided to try somewhere else close by. The Moorings is a little gem of a place, run by chefs, so expect hotel like presentation of excellent food, which is worth waiting for. This is a totally different dining experience from the usual canal side cafe. Dogs are allowed inside on the hard floor area, but we sat outside with ours as it was a beautiful day and we could admire the canal boats in the marina.
