Very disappointed with our recent experience… We ordered a ‘large’ fish and chips which we only found out they don’t do a large when we got home. The portion size was ridiculous. Not only this, everything was soggy by the time we got home and we live about a 2 minute drive away. We went back to ask for our large portion and we were told that they don’t do a large, only small or regular! Not sure why we were told at the time of ordering? £14 for regular fish and chips and spring rolls… Very very disappointing.

AWFUL!! Empty car park says it all. Carvery was left unattended and food open to flies. Vegetarian "chicken" fillet had been taken out of freezer microwaved til it was like a dry biscuit then put on a plate- grey dry and inedible- the dog would not touch it. Vegetables were cold and unpalatable, cauliflower was mostly tough stem that a knife could not cut through. Complaint to staff met with no response. Then all the staff vanished. No serviettes, No care. Left in disgust. Will never go there again. One star is too high.

Great little bar to visit for a drink in chester. Reasonable prices, great selection of drinks. Well worth a visit.

Had Christmas Dinner today, prawns had gone off and smelt off really bad, turkey dinner was “okay” at best.. very very dry meat and overcooked roasties and wasn’t enough veg for everyone and food was cold… £85 pp is crazy for the experience.. first and last time unfortunately

We had a wonderful visit to the hanging gate for Mothers Day. We were a large party at 13, with four children. One who required a highchair chair. This was no problem at all for the pub. The table was ready including highchair, as soon as we arrived. Our table was situated near to the doors to the garden area. Which is enclosed, so great for children to play. We pre-ordered from the set menu, all the food was delicious! Especially the roast dinners. Would highly recommend! The staff were so friendly and attentive. We will definitely be returning soon. I was treating a friend to an overnight stay near Chester with the first day being spent on a shopping spree in the city, something that was long overdue thanks to the covid lockdown. I tried to find somewhere a little different for us to eat that lunchtime as the restaurant we would normally use had sadly closed permanently. We found this a rather unusual place and opted for the tapas style small plates. With hindsight, we should have ordered less than we did as the portions were larger than expected. The decor was a little odd and not particularly to my taste. The service was fairly attentive without being over the top and as far as we could tell, all covid guidelines were followed.

The best chippy, we regularly do an hour round trip to visit as we’ve been coming since we were little when visiting my grandparents. They are no longer alive but we still make the trip as they never disappoint! Best pies round & lovely chips!

Located facing Addelshaw Tower is Old Dukes ,its a bar I've been quite a few times over the years, always had a good time and so it proved on our latest visit to here. I love the look of this bar, interior is superb, light and airy, lovely decor and furnishings, pub games and there's plenty of seating options spread throughout this bar both inside and outside, its just a really good bar to unwind in . We ordered Madri beers ,these were served in excellent condition being iced cold and sparkling and we just kicked back and took in the great bar we were in while we sipped our beers. My beer was really good, a golden, light and hoppy lager style beer bursting with taste and very easy to drink especially when served freezing cold as in this bar, it was just so good being in such a lovely bar enjoying a quality brew and sat with my twin brother ,best beer companion in the world . We both really enjoyed our beers in here before we moved on and although our visit was only fleeting as on every other visit to here we had a great time . Old Dukes is easy to locate along Bell Tower Walk. Opening hours are; Monday to Friday, open from 4pm. Saturday & Sunday, open from midday. Well worth checking out if you're in the area or planning a trip to Chester.
