The Victoria Pub in Cheshire West and Chester

We called Friday. It’s a lovely old pub, good choice of beers. Like siting in history. The only problem was they had overly loud dance music. It’s just felt out of place and you couldn’t hold a conversation. We had the one pint and left. Maybe go back mid week.

Wow, what an amazing pub! Us three on holiday passing through Chester stumbled upon The Victoria Inn for lunch and it was a real delight. I had their chicken curry which was fantastic, they had a great drinks selection, and the two ladies serving behind the bar were just fantastic. Highly recommended.

Love the history of places like this so popped in for a drink, 10 mins after buying the rather expensive drinks we were told the pub was closing ( 9pm) and we had 5 mins to move to an adjacent disgusting sister pub (see pic). Absolutely shocking, regular visitors to chester but will never return here.

This pub is an absolute hovel. I love a good old fashioned boozer and this place could be one. It is beautiful to look at, perfectly situated and has an amazing history. But as you walk in, you are hit with the stench of sick which follows you around the whole bar. We were quoted one price by one bartender, then charged something completely different by another one. Incidentally, it was also the most expensive we had visited over the course of our stay, and we had visited ten different ones. It is so run down. It should be a privilege to run such a historic hostelry. Give it a clean and a lick of paint for goodness sake.

Good pub food and good selection of cask ales

Amazing pub! The best place in Chester! Never been into such a fantastic place in my life! Friday and Saturday nights are the best! Great music and entertainment and value for money

Fantastic food, great character. Can get busy but its worth waiting for. The cottage pie was delicious. Always full plates. GF food as well. Staff very friendly & helpful. Always go here if in chester.

Wonderful visit to The Victoria 10 ladies on a day out in Chester. Food was excellent home cooked, good portion & very reasonable. Staff went out of their way to make us welcome. Christina is a star she went out of her way to make us welcome. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit would certainly visit again. We all would highly recommend. Thankyou from the Christmas Hat ladies.

Lovely atmosphere with great Christmas vibe. Closed kitchen for bit in afternoon so we were gutted so ate elsewhere sadly.

Sadly chose this pub to have lunch..we walked past so many other tempting places ,as this one had been recommended for its home cooked food... the veg were cold and hard,nd not all of it fresh in my opinion,no one asked if we were happy with the food,when I asked the manager about the food I was told 'its meant to be like that',was offered to have it put in the microwave .I had pre paid for the christmas lunch,from which I had eaten a small part of. Horrible food and very uninterested poor customer service, will not be returning or recommending it to family /friends

Home made food yummy. Food was delicious and plenty of it. Service was good and very friendly. Will definitely recommend I will be going back without a doubt.

Had a lovely lunch here reasonably priced home cooked delicious food , service was very good , quirky little place and it was very busy once a table emptied it was soon filled. We will definitely come back and try something else from the menu

We had the beef Sunday roast today and it was amazing. The beef was cooked beautifully almost didn’t need a knife to cut it. The four freshly cooked vegetables were delicious and the gravy was definitely the best I have tasted. Didn’t have room for a pudding although looking at the next table I wish I had. The staff were great company telling us stories of the centuries old pub. Well worth a visit. I’ll certainly be going back.

What a fabulous pub, we had the roast beef dinner today it was gorgeous, we will definitely be back, the girls who work there a really nice they make you very welcome 😃

This is a great boozer, real busy and decent music playing, we couldn't help but dance.

Used to like going here but after being charged for 4 measures after ordering 2 doubles (first time we have ever been charged double the cost for a double measure) very put off going again .

I regularly come in here Sometimes just for drinks and catch up other times for food It’s a great place if your looking somewhere to have fun and the entertainment is spot on would highly recommend this place there absolutely amazing in all aspects been coming here for years and will continue to do so and all the staff are amazing Well done guys see yous all soon 💕

A proper pub serving proper pub food. No airs or graces. Staff were excellent, our server went above board to assist my partner in his search for a pint of IPA. The food was excellent, huge portions & piping hot.

Lovely staff and food, the atmosphere is so fitting with the Chester history, it’s very rare you find pubs like this. Food is fresh and staff are well presented. Shout out to Hayden, John and Jason who made us feel so welcome and were very funny and energetic. Will definitely be popping in again soon. Authentic Chester pubs.

Amazing place for a night out 😁

Called in on a Friday afternoon for some lunch bar staff were very polite and chatty had ciabatta and side of chips it was delicious highly recommend food. Have also been here on a sat night atmosphere is amazing

Been here a few times , the staff are always welcoming and can always have a laugh with them , food is amazing always comes hot and presented well , not to mention nights out , safe to say it’s a pub you can go to and feel the safest x

Appalling behaviour from so called management and bouncers bullying us to buy more drinks when the manager served us our original order incorrectly! We were then asked to leave with 3 bouncers around us! We are a 40/50 year old couple on just out for a quiet drink on our way to a restaurant. I have never been so disgusted and ashamed in my birth town of Chester! The place was dirty and run down as well - avoid at all costs!!!

Ordered several drinks and the barman got my order wrong and gave me tia maria and coke Instead of diet coke and refused to correct and change the order. Really poor service. The miserable tall skinny barman with beard and brown long hair a d overdue a hair cut.... and missing a smile and manners.... I was ready to pay £60 cash until this incident and paid card....

Possibly the best views in Chester from the Rows outside this 1st floor Greene King pub. Down to one cask ale this Monday lunchtime - the lack lustre IPA - 50 pence surcharge added for half pints. The Courtyard at the back is used for events during busier times - can get noisy.

We were so flabbergasted at the prices we had to go back and check it was right. £5 for a Coke Zero! Also needs a clean as it felt rundown and not very looked after.

The ‘beer garden’ is a beer yard. £5 for a pint of coke. Move on.

We were visiting Chester and called in The Victoria with a view to maybe having some lunch…. We order our drinks at the bar and sat at a table opposite, we then realised there was an overwhelming smell and unfortunately it was urine, I don’t know if we were by the toilets or not but it was very obvious. We moved tables but unfortunately the smell followed. The glasses were dirty, the beer wasn’t pleasant even though they advertise cask mark outside. Due to our experience we left and did not eat, not a great experience and will never return.

Good little pub for a drink in Chester. Plenty of drinkers in which says it all. Lots of choice and helpful staff to help you choose!

Expensive pub £10.40! for a pint of fosters lager shandy & a lemonade on a Wednesday afternoon outrageous went to the Watergate pub in the evening much nicer

Great food, but not a great choice on the menue but what sandwiches we had were excellent and good value for money plenty on the plate.

Traditional pub in the heart of Chester. Good prices and lovely food. Staff really friendly and helpful too. Off your like chain pubs with Bo atmosphere and no character is not for you. If you're old school like me then it will be right up your street

Old English pub,what you would expect form Chester. Called in on a Wednesday evening about 6-30 and stopped serving 7-15 despite at least 15 customers coming in wanting to be served . Pint of bitter and half pint of cider almost £8. Lovely building nice staff,mainly for tourists and weekend visitors. I think most locals will give it a miss and visit the Boot or Wetherspoons.

Overpriced beer, £5.20 for a pint of Fosters, an average lager, £3.20 for half a Strongbow, an average cider. Not been in there for circa 15 years, be longer before I go back. Totally lost track of reality with their pricing, needless to say it was empty!!

Staff were pleasant. Food was average. The toilets were disgusting. Had I have been before we had eaten we wouldn't have stayed. Gross.

Just like to say 1st August 2024 evening time, for a drink and Hannah was brilliant on the bar very friendly and helpful. I would advise that you try this pub it has a great atmosphere, very spacious. Loved been here, drinks are lovely and reasonably priced. Definitely recommend. Disappointed that we could not have lunch here. We were told food orders were not being taken (a large group had just been given their meals), then as we sat having a drink other people were being told 30 min wait until ordering then 30 min wait for food. Drinks were fine, came back later in the evening for few more drinks and to experience the courtyard at night

We had the John smiths. £5.15 a pint and it was sour. We only went there for a bit of nostalgia and I wish we hadn't .The whole place was grim and grubby.

Taking advantage of a sunny day, we ventured to Chester from the Wirral area. My friend said that he used to study in Chester and often came to "The Victoria" pub when he was a teenager. So we went, and had lunch here. The food was good, the staff were friendly and the server was quite fast. And the price was not as expensive as most places in Chester. Though it's quite small, it has a snuggish feel about it. It brings back a lot of memories for my friend, as for myself it was my first time being here.

Was on a day trip I to Chester, I like to find somewhere different to have a drink and food instead of the run of the mill places. Pooped in for lunch. Wasn't disappointed, good ale, good food and the staff were nice too. Don't expect the Ritz though, but a very good boozer on my opinion.

We didn't eat here. Spent the late hours there drinking. The staff were quick to serve you and very friendly. The singer was amazing - definitely would go again when next in Chester.

Brilliant pub with lovely staff. We aren’t local but have been to Chester twice for a weekend away and both times ended up in this pub and honestly both times the staff have been so friendly. Will always come here for a drink when we are in Chester

Oh dear! We approached the Victoria Pub from the rear as it looked traditional & very welcoming. The beer and wine was fine, alas that is were the positives end. The interior is tatty and dirty. Gents toilets a disgrace. The music (via a laptop or similar) went from loud to louder, then down to low suddenly back to louder etc, with staff adjusting the volume depending on their taste or choice. No atmosphere whatsoever. We noted without exaggeration at least 33% of people entering, leaving within seconds...I don't blame them. Our first and last visit.

Food was ok. A mistake with our order but the lady behind the bar sorted it out and also gave us a complimentary drink on the house for the mix up which was good of them.

5 STAR PUB , food really is so nice and the price for Chester is really good value . Sunday dinner is amazing and theres plenty of it . Tina and Ryan served us ,both full of fun again. Phill the Chef cooks amazing food and if you needed anything just ask and he will do his best to please as always . We have been going to this pub for years and you get to know the staff and other customers who mostly friendly . The pub is very old , one of the oldest pubs in Chester so you do have to give this old Lady some appreciation on how long this pub has been going and still one of the busiest pubs around on weekends . I have seen a few bad reviews but honestly , its a Listed Building , the food is at a very reasnable price and tastes great. Theres so many places now in Chester that are mostly double the price of here . Keep the good work up guys ,because we really do appreciate it . Roy and Michele

Not impressed at all. Bought our drinks from the bar sit down and two security lady’s, come over aggressively tells my mate for her to go with them. So she does on her own! We originally thought they must just wanted to talk, but no they removed her from the premises, on her own. luckily I demanded that we go with her. The security guards didn’t let us know what was happening and literally nothing happened to warrant that behaviour. They was just going to leave her outside not allowed to come back to her friends, just on her own, it could of ended very badly. women security guards didn’t think how it may be dangerous to remove a girl on her own without letting there friends know where she’s gone. they should of just refused us service because we spent money in there on a round of drinks that we couldn’t even finish because they decided to target her. supposedly she was removed for abusing a male member of staff… again she was with us the whole time so how on earth that apparently happened she’s 5ft 3, for gods sake. 😂 Disgusting. Definitely just wanted our money and then get us out. A refund should have been offered or again simply don’t serve us. In total there was 10 of us, with partners apart from the girl that got removed who was on her own (probably easy target to bully her)

The toilets are a health hazard! No joke! They are discusting!! It's a real shame because the pub is lovely, a really lively place to spend a few hours on a Saturday night; but spend a penny at your peril!!!

Came across the pub by chance. Had a lovely lunch. I had the ploughman's lunch which was excellent and filling. My wife had chicken curry which she really enjoyed. Food cooked fresh and found the staff pleasant

Came on a sunday for a roast and it didn’t disappoint. I got chicken with my roast and it was all delicious. The roast was £11.95 and for that price I got so much more than I expected, I also asked for extra gravy and they were definitely not shy like other places. The staff were lovely and always made sure to check back and to accommodate me.

Worst drinks and toilets in chester

London prices for drinks! Over £8 for a pint of IPaa and half a pepsi. Pub looks a bit tired and was a bit grubby. We definitely didn't stay for a second drink.

Having read great reviews,I ordered steak pie with chips.When it arrived it was a bowl of steak chunks in gravy with a tiny little square of shortcrust rock hard pastry on top not covering anything .How this passes as a pie I don't understand .service was good and steak was nice but definitely not a pie I'm sorry to say.

What a great little pub like going back in time

Nice little, very old pub in the centre of Chester, with loads of history. Just had the 1 drink as it was closing, told can continue to use pub behind not sure what. Polite staff, IPA was not greatest beer I've had.

Lovely pub but shocking customer service from the young lad behind the bar. Decided to shove his basked into an elderly customer rather than ask him to politely move or even assist him in opening a door (as we did earlier on for another member of staff). Referred to the customers as ‘bro’ when questioned why he couldn’t politely ask us to move. Really shame that the one young lad lets the rest of the staff down.

Called in here as we had visited before. It's a lovely pub, we ordered lunch which was really nice. What really let the place down was the language from a female member of staff talking to people who were obviously regulars. I am not a prude, but I was shocked by the language coming from her mouth, it was was vile. Totally oblivious to her surroundings and people trying to enjoy their lunch. I was not deliberately listening in but she was that loud you couldn't help but hear her. Definitely let the place down, maybe just be aware of where you are.

What a gem of a place ...we came on a Saturday afternoon . The building itself is old and lovely very cosy. The staff were amazing and friendly and dancing to the music on occasion..its a place id like to work . We will be back

Great little pub on the rows super location friendly and exquisite

We went to the Victoria for lunch on a Saturday afternoon and the place was busy, we managed to get a table. I had fish and chips my wife had steak pie and my daughter had the chicken burger. The food was proper pub food and we were all happy with the portion we were served. Prices were good and The staff were friendly and efficient, and we left happy enough

For year's it's been a great meeting place in Chester

Can never fault any aspect of this place, lovely bar staff, great atmosphere throughout the day and evening. Regulars and newcomers are all made to feel welcome. Pity I can only give it 5 stars really.

If you’re visiting Chester and want to experience a great British pub in experience with a friendly and fun atmosphere I cannot recommend this place highly enough.

My friends and I stayed at the Commercial hotel on the shared courtyard, so called in for a couple.if drinks. We were served by Nick and Hayden. What great service, both were chatty and engaging and did everything they could to ensure we enjoyed our time there. Nick even popped to the shops and asked if we wanted anything. #aboveandbeyond Definitely will return Gerrie and Shirley

Staff training required. Before clearing, wait until all guests at the table have finished eating. And that also means they are not chewing their last mouthful. Do not take plates whilst others are eating. I did not pull the member of staff up on this today, because it's lack of training. I did at one time think she was going to get the cloth and spray and clean the table before we had left!! My eyes said no.

Just love the atmosphere of this place. The owners make sure you have a good time. Haven't eaten here for a long while but when I did the food is just lovely, delicious x

A truly genuine British pub experience with roots dating back to 1269. As business travelers, my colleague and I, both from Sweden, visited The Victoria for a few beers on the last evening of our stay, and both the atmosphere and staff were fantastic. Well worth a visit!

Was looking for somewhere different to have lunch while on a day trip, and chose this traditional pub tucked away on the upper level of one of Chester's Rows, close to the Cross. Climbed a steep flight of steps to get to it, but there is a more accessible entrance round the back, through a little square behind St Peter's Church. The Victoria is Chester's oldest pub and the interior reflects this, full of olde-worlde atmosphere and charm with its low wooden beams, quirky layout and stained glass windows. Some lovely pictures of old Chester on the walls. There's a cosy parlour with a big TV screen and a beer garden that strangely sits on a paved over graveyard. The only letdown was the toilets, very cramped and in need of renovation. There's a well stocked bar with a good choice of ales, but I ordered a nice Merlot to drink with my meal. The barman was friendly and hospitable, and I was served straight away. The menu offered a pleasing selection of classic pub meals, sandwiches and ciabattas. Ordered the homemade beef lasagne with garlic bread and salad. The lasagne was hot, good quality lean meat with no gristle, and the salad was very fresh. Generous helpings too. Great convivial atmosphere once the pub filled up! Overall a satisfying lunch experience.

The Vic has possibly one of the best atmospheres in Chester. The staff and owners are amazing and so friendly. This bar is a must for anyone out in Chester over the weekend's.

We stopped over for a drink as it’s one of the oldest pubs in Chester. The service was friendly. Drinks are cheap too. They had 2 shots for £6 which was cheap. It was a bit early but thought it was a good deal.

I have never experienced rude staff and bouncers like it! Had a great day at the races with a group of couples, walked in here, place had a foul smell, staff attitude was disgusting. Lady bouncer with glasses needs to have a serious word with herself. Ruined our night. Advised at all costs!!!!!

It's a wonderfully historic pub with character, but the food wasn't good. I had a burger but it turned out to be the cheapest, thinnest, most aenemic type of burger I've seen in a long time. A complete disappointment.

Used to be good until they got DJs in who think they are good at DJing but actually kill the atmosphere and dancing with naff music. Here's a tip: at 11 o'clock ish, all you have to do is stick some bangers on. Stop trying to be clever. You ruin it. Shame
