The Hanging Gate in Cheshire West and Chester

Have dropped in for a drink on several occasions so decided to eat at Hanging Gate last night. Service was slow due to the two servers being run off their feet by quite a full pub including a large party - this is a management issue not front of house who could not have been more attentive as to our needs despite the number of customers they were having to deal with - food was good without being spectacular but reasonably priced. Decor and ambience good

I waited until the next day to write this review, as I wondered if my view would have changed at all. The service is very slow and inexperienced. Waiting to be served and staff just watching - until a 3rd customer arrived the other staff burst into life. "Yes please". He watched for while before serving. I think he was possibly too young to serve but started to do soft drinks etc. The second time a guy was having a problem with his payment on card and again service stopped completely. I had to suggest I'll have this and that while we wait for the guy to come back with another debit card. (Making pints / drinks while we waited) It wasn't very busy really but the service was still slow. I saw one girl on the bar and two young lads on service. Ordered a child's meal first for our son while we decided - but I had a bad feeling about ordering so held back. The beans were not on the plate so I asked for beans. They didn't come. After about 15/20 I went to the bar to who I thought was the management and asked for beans. They did not come. After about 15/20 So we got up and left. On my way out I said to the girl behind the bar the beans didn't come to which she replied fairly aggressively "I've asked for them!" I carried on walking and asked are you the manager. Again in a fairly aggressive/defensive manner the reply. "Scott (I think I've remembered the name right) is the assistant manager!" I could see she wasn't in the mood to deal with a complaint or problem - possibly stressed I don't know so we left. My last words were the service is terrible we're going to the hazel pear to eat. And we left. In the hazel pear we ate 2 mains and a bottle of wine and glad we moved.

Yet again !!!! even though it’s changed hands the wait for food was far to long especially as nobody told us there was a waiting time (40mins) no staff came to see if everything was ok ,, although the food was nice ,,,surely staff need training into customer service

Don't even bother with this place. We called in for a meal at 7.15pm, it was pretty empty. There was one table occupied inside and five tables outside. We were told the kitchen was 'inundated' and they couldn't offer us a meal so we left. Their attitude was more like they couldn't be bothered.

Really disappointed with the service today, went in as train was cancelled ordered a drink and a sandwich and garlic bread around 5 to 2. Not advised of any wait on the food and there was only one other table in. Asked at the bar at 20 past 2 for how long it was going to be told 5 minutes so paid so we could leave once we had ate so I could get to my train. got to 2:35 and a waiter came and said it was going to be another 5 minutes. So we decided that my partner was going to drop me off at the train and come get the food as at this point we had paid for it. He got back and collected the food that had been wrapped up. No garlic bread he was told they had thrown it as they assumed we did not want it? Considering we had paid for it we would obviously want it

We booked a table for family meal. We were seated in bar at 2.30pm our food finally arrived after 4pm. When I complained we were advised they don’t do table service in bar area (not our choice). We had to go bar for drinks and then go back to ask for menu’s. Customer service unacceptable. When we said this to manager advised that we didn’t order till 3.10pm - that was because we had not been given menu’s. It still nearly an hour after that for food to arrive. And we witnessed other customers ordering at their table - table service. Food was lovely when finally arrived ☹️

So cold, I needed a coat. 1st choices were unavailable. Wrong starter arrived, then we were told that our choice was unavailable. How can olives and bread be unavailable in a pub? Cold plates and cold vegetables. Not offered any desert menu. Not somewhere I want to return to. Such a shame.

We visited 24th October 7pm. What a special occasion it was my sons 1st birthday and my dads 60th. I visited with my family and some close friends, every person enjoyed their food and the service was brilliant. Friendly and attentive staff which made our experience so much better for such a special occasion. We will be back to try the new menu! Thank you

Such a shame for Weaverham but the food at the Hanging Gate is terrible. Chicken like rubber. Menu uninspiring. Generally poor quality all around. Nice enough for drinks. Even the Alvanley Arms has a better menu and it’s the same group.

Just been for a quick lunch here after having lived 10 minutes away for over 20 years yet never been It's been done out in a lovely cosy way. We had a family lunch for our Son's 21st birthday. Rob and his team looked after us really well and we all had a fabulous time. Thanks for everything and we'll be back!

Went to the Hanging Gate to celebrate my partners 40th Birthday, 5 of us in total. Was very enjoyable, all the staff were very attentive during the evening. James's took our order even though he was on his break and was most helpful in amending the choices to suit the picky needs of the teenagers Rob the boss was as attentive and pleasant as normal and ensured everything was all good for us during our visit. My mix grill was excellent and the meat was cooked to perfection. Even the Teenagers didn't leave anything on the plate. Overall a very pleasant and enjoyable evening in a lovely chilled out place. Would recommend to anyone for a visit

The food was fine, restaurant clean and bright, good service for food and drinks, and a decent pint of Lees Founders Ale

Food Not so good this time. Party of 12 of us booked for Sunday. I would highlight the service was excellent throughout and incredibly friendly and very funny at times too, worth it just for the great service. Sadly this time the food was bang average, but we had a great afternoon so we will put this one down to a one off.

We live locally so wanted to try somewhere new. I don't usually review as I'm pretty laid back and it takes a lot for me to be unhappy enough to make comment others may see. I do feel however its important that people get accurate info on places they may want to visit as the reviews here are mixed to say the least. Its poor, and thats being polite. Food was mostly frozen (Son's pizza was deep dish Chigago town) Surf and Turf and my Wife's steak were both really poor. Fatty and not cooked as ordered. It's not cheap either so if your expecting 'fresh' tasty food I'd avoid. If your expectation level is Beefeaters and Premier Inn's you'll be fine.

We called in on Friday evening rather early, before 6.00pm, hoping for a meal. We were amazed at such a welcome, a table outside but in the shade, great food and drink, served with a smile by James. Best chips that I have eaten for ages and a curry full of chicken and vegetables, just the spicy side of average. We asked for extra vegetables with my husband's sausage and mash expecting a few frozen peas, but we got a dish of mixed fresh vegetables. This all made for a lovely evening after a long drive.

Fantastic meal again, I had leek a potato soup starter 👍 The Steak and Ale Pie , Chunky Chips and pot of gravy you can’t beat it 👍👍👍 then I have to share my pudding. Could have done with 1 more server poor lad run ragged behind the bar and waiting on 👍

Went for lunch with my daughter on saturday and the food was lovely. I have been here once before and got the cajun chicken pasta so decided to have it again and it was even better the 2nd time round, its a massive portion for £13 and i couldnt eat it all. My daughter had the kids chicken strips & chips and cleared her plate, my only disappointment was i couldnt fit a dessert in due to how filling the pasta was so i asked if they done take away but they couldnt do cherry pie to take away, as they had nothing to put it in :(

I visited The Hanging Gate earlier this evening, for a get together with friends (9 of us in total). We were served pretty quickly - within approx. 35 minutes of being seated, we’d ordered and received our food. I had the falafel, spinach and halloumi burger (minus the halloumi - I don’t like cheese), which wasn’t to my taste unfortunately, but that’s not their fault. All in all, I’d recommend it.

Visited with family at 7pm on a Saturday night. 2 of the 3 specials were not available already so we ordered off the main menu. The expensive Wexford Steak was ordered medium but arrived rare and was tough and inedible. A new one was brought which was no better. at least they agreed to remove it from our bill. The rest of the food was passable but not great. Service was very odd.. we had to keep waving people over to order more drinks etc . Not somewhere we would return to.
