The Red Lion on Northgate street was one of the many historic pubs we visited on our two day stay in Chester.The Red Lion offer a superb food and drink's range and it's in a superb area of the city centre. Dating from the 1600's this superb pub was one of the first pub's we visited and what a pub to start our day off.Its housed in a very distinct building that looks amazing when it is illuminated in the dark.The interior of this pub is modern and clean with superb items throughout it's whole interior and excellent seating options. These are the pubs that me and my twin go to all the time as there historic pub's and it may be haunted.They offer good cask ales and there in lively areas.We visited early in the afternoon and it was fairly busy but me and my twin where served quickly.When we visited here we had Carling brewery lagers which were perfectly served and were very well priced. Its an excellent old world pub in a fantastic area of the city centre and it's well worth a visit.(This is my 2nd review of the Red Lion). Opening Hours. Monday-Sunday-11.00-Onwards.

Had a very good meal, we both had double Mighty Meat Burgers (recommend) 2 good burgers on a bun, I had chips & my partner had salad we also had Calamari Strips. The service was really good, the young lady on the bar was friendly & happy & wanting to help. Price was good, nice & quiet at the time we went in. Altogether a good food experience. Will definitely be going again.

Lovely food, kind and friendly staff really enjoyed our meal and generous portions. Very good service and waitresses were lovely with smiles all round. Highly recommend for a meal out. Very good service front put in to all dishes, plenty of options to and good prices! Definitely will be going again! Plus right in the centre of Chester so handy if you just want a quick lunch while shopping! Also dog friendly. Very impressed considering large variety to choose from quick service and great prices!

Great atmosphere and service. Lively sports bar with good beers and reliable pub grub menu. Plenty of early evening dinners being served and although not dining myself. Plenty of clear plates around.

Called in for a bite to eat and a few drinks with some friends, the moment we walked in we were greeted with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The staff were amazing, quick service with a personal touch. We ordered fish and chips and some burgers the food was piping hot and fresh. Definitely be back here when I'm next in the area. Used to be a good value pub. I think now "normal punters" are paying a premium to fund the student discount scheme. Most expensive round of the day, today, but hey I feel sure they will want local people to drink there when the students go home.

The food I received at the red lion was outstanding and Rachel, the chef, went above and beyond. I will definitely be returning!

Myself, my daughter and my mother came here for lunch. We had the pleasure of meeting the chef, she was amazing. My 2 year old daughter has many dietary needs and the chef was so helpful and caring towards her. She made some extra vegan things for my daughter to try as she is fussy aswel as vegan (not by choice). It was such a pleasure eating here, all the staff were really nice and helpful with food choices amongst everything else they were doing. Very friendly pub, clean and comfy. Would definitely recommend and will definitely be back when in Chester. 100%.

Expensive on the drinks. We were one of the first tables in and we were the last to get our food. The pieninordered was rock hard and I could only eat the middle.

Great old fashioned pub with good selection of drinks, quick table service good pub grub with friendly helpful staff and footy on as well. Very busy even mid week so either book a table or wait at the bar. 👍

Good Beer, Good Food, great service, boisterous students on the day we visiter

Called with the sole purpose of using a multi venue gift voucher up. Impressed that staff knew what to do with it without any hassle. We were enjoying the relaxed atmosphere and not really aware of time passing but eventually queried our food order. Staff quickly came to tell us there had been an issue and the order had not gone to the kitchen. From that point on the food was very quickly received, was hot and delicious. My chicken and ham pie was great, peas nicely cooked, not over done and fries crisp and hot. My partner thoroughly enjoyed his chicken burger. Staff couldn't have been nicer and were very sorry about the delay, which can happen anywhere. The food was great value, menu choices varied and sometimes you just want good, unfancy, nice food. Pub had a good friendly, bustling atmosphere and serves smirniff ice which is a bonus as not everywhere does.

Dropped in for a pint of John Smiths. Good beer and friendly atmosphere. Will return for a meal next time ... and to see the barmaids socks with hearts on which she displayed with a little dance. It's staff like that who make you feel at home and give the pub it's friendly atmosphere.

We’ve been here so many times and this is why today visit is hard to report. Made order for 4 adults an 1 child. Was not told pre order there were any issues. After paying and walking away I overheard bar staff telling another person after ordering a pizza there was a 30min wait. We waited for approximately 1hr 20 mins for the food this was not once interrupted by staff to tell us why and apologise for the wait. The fact we had a child who was eating, didn’t help them to keep us updated. Finally food came and everything was cold,we got offered a free round of drinks and 3 of our dishes were taken back for fresh. After about 10 mins the nachos came back,still the same and was told the steak Philly were being cooked. Another 10 mins past and the staff member came back and told us that they were very sorry but they’d ran out of panini’s !!! This was the final straw we requested a refund for the food we didn’t receive. The food we did get wasn’t up to the normal standard. My son had the Tacos which he said were warm but was so hungry he ate them…..tonight he’s not stopped being sick!!!

I visited here with some family today and waited 1 hour for food after ordering, as well as informing the staff that me and my girlfriend both had an allergy upon ordering food at the bar. We received cutlery after about 40 minutes of waiting, a further 20 minutes past without any sign of our food, so we asked a staff member if they could check on our food, after asking we were informed that there would be a wait due to the allergies. We did not think that this was acceptable as the area was not busy at all, there were tables who came in after us and ordered after us who had received and finished their food before we had even received cutlery. As the lady who informed us about the wait walked off and said “unless you want to have an allergic reaction” under her breath, however it was loud enough for us and a number of other people to hear this. This made a number of other guests look over at us making us feel uncomfortable and very judged, this should not have happened and as a direct result of the comment made towards us we decided to leave as myself and girlfriend did not feel safe eating here. As staff members of Mitchell and Butler we do understand the importance of allergy safety and appreciate that areas need to be cleaned before cooking, but this should not be used as an excuse for food taking over an hour to arrive and being treated as rudely as we were. We paid for our drinks and left, would not visit again, the staff member in question was rude and no apology was offered at any point. The rest of the staff looked as though they would rather be elsewhere rather than at their jobs. The service was very slow and I felt like we were an inconvenience to be a customer in their buisness. I’d appreciate to hear your comments and feedback on this issue and that customer service training is required for this employee as no customer should be made to feel uncomfortable and unwelcome in any buisness no matter what their dietary requirements are.

Popped in for a late lunch whilst out & about in chester and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food considering it's reasonably priced ( for chester city centre). My mixed grill & my partners steak meal were cooked just how we liked and good portion sizes the inclusion of a pot of pepper sauce each was a nice touch - we will definitely return next time we're in town 😋

it was 2:30pm on monday when we visited, there were 2 other tables in the pub, the place was quiet. we ordered on the app, food and drinks for 3 of us. we went up to the bar and asked for table water for 4, and the girls behind the bar treated us as an inconvenience, no customer service attitude or initiative between the pair of them and faces like slapped arses. we waited 20 minutes for cutlery to be delivered to us, and one of the girls had her vape in her hand with her mouthpiece touching our cutlery, absolutely disgusting. we waited 30 minutes for 3 meals, considering it is pretty much all fried it took a ridiculous amount of time. to be fair my burger which was grilled was also burnt, didn’t complain at the time due to having to leave soon, and wasn’t going to wait another 30 minutes to rectify this issue. after the food had been given to us, there were no apologises for the long wait or even an “enjoy your meals” the service was nonexistent.

Slightly expensive for what it is, but good pints, bar staff are very quick and get through a big crowd with ease, and there's a couple of little tables outside... There's not much funnier than getting drunk and watching the evening/nightlife of Chester walk by...

Great location. Big inside, plenty of seating, tv's on the wall and the food looked value for money. We sat outside, enjoyed drinks and took in the scenery of Chester. Staff were really friendly. Will definitely return when back in Chester.

Had a fabulous lunch with my mum an 2 daughters today. The chef Jake cooked my steak to perfection 👌👍. The food was all delicious an presentation of each meal perfect. We was served by Jess an meg who were fantastic friendly an super helpful lovely polite ladies. We shall be returning next time in Chester thanx for the service an food 😁.
