The Old Boot Inn in Cheshire West and Chester

Went into this pub with the dog. There were no clear signs indicating that this is the only place in Chester that's not dog friendly. Dog is quite large. Ordered drinks at the bar, they took our money then told us we would have to leave as they don't allow dogs.

This old pub used to be a cheap pint but now very expensive, won't be going again, prices have gone crazy

Umm, mixed review, love the building and atmosphere, and okay ish bitter, certainly not the best in Chester. One of its quirks is that they claim to be a no technology pub, which, in principle, I think is great. However, on purchasing a pint and obtaining a receipt that needed to be scanned into my work app, the bar maid was quite rude when she saw me with my phone taking a picture of the receipt. A no technology pub in principle is brill. However, common sense would be best. Loud talking, ring tones, etc. I completely get unacceptable, or even sat there reading google for an hour, but a quick use of someone's phone, which generates no noise, no flash etc, it took me 5 seconds.... common sense needed....especially as there are electronics all around the pub and the bar maids manor was far from friendly! So for me it's not on the return list, there are better, more friendly places serving better ale close by.

Sadly not elderly friendly, entrance a nightmare for people with walking disability. Just a small alteration would make it so much better

A "digital detox" pub while every step you take is being recorded by cameras. Really strange isnt it? Anyway, the pub is beautiful and beers are reasonably priced.

A very old, quaint pub and I was very impressed with the notices at the door and on the bar saying No Phones, and No Swearing. However, we left after one drink as the as a local who was chatting to the barmaid was swearing … a lot!

Bar lady came over to my table and pointed me out of my family group and said I can’t be on my phone in a very abrasive manner. I said I wasn’t and hadn’t had my phone out once but I was told she knew I was, and she had evidence as she had checked the cctv. My phone hadn’t left my pocket the entire time. My family and I astonished at her rudeness. Likely she had seen me read the Mystery Guide booklet we had been completing, to my family, and misinterpreted. Not worth going to places that treat customers this way. Understand the rules, don’t understand the need for the attitude.

It's very dark but full of history. Mobile technology uses forbidden 🚫 which was good as we all chatted and enjoyed company without our phones. Good beer selection, but the wine lacked lustre.

Don't think the serve food,but no phones,ect allowed,just old fashioned conversation which is very rare these day's

Avoid. It's not one I will return to. Tables and chairs are worn out and tired. It's got horribly printed signs everywhere telling you how to behave. The only thing going for it is it's history and cheap prices and I would rather pay more to enjoy a beer.

A very old pub situated upstairs. It's a laptop and phone free pub. People come to have a chat and also read a book.!! No music and can be a bit quiet. But if you like to chill out its a great place

Full of history, plus cheap beer. When in Chester this is a must for a pit stop. Steep steps up but well worth the climb. Staff friendly and beer refreshing and easy on your wallet.

Was unsure of this place at first it being no phones laptops etc but it got me and my partner talking having a laugh without the need of our phones it was just what we needed. I loved it very cosy and the cider was lovely and I love the character of the pub.

Amazing Very old pub right on the main street in Chester on the Balcony. Nice to find somewhere with no technology allowed. So people were actually sitting together and talking. Nice Samuel Smith beer

Lovely old pub on the rows but you are given rules to follow, one of them being no mobile phones or messaging devices. At first I thought fair enough until I noticed it didn't apply to people paying with their phone. All the beers are Sam Smith's.

Love visiting the Boot Inn when in Chester. A bit of technology detox and a chance to just sit and chat. Highly recommended (and as a nod to the digital world they take card payments now!)

Um pub fica num prédio construído em 1643 e é muito aconchegante e tem ótimas cervejas. O pub tem uma política de não permitir o uso de celular dentro do ambiente, o que faz com que as pessoas permaneçam conversando. Vale a pena a visita.

Great place for a peaceful pint

Wow one of the most uncomfortable atmospheres I've ever been in, so it's - 3 outside and raining heavy, I'm trying to get my bearings as I don't know the area very well and I'm surposed to be meeting friends later. I notice the boot in, so I step inside to get out the cold, order myself a drink sit down about to message friends about where I am and I'm told "No Mobile phones" as there is a "no tech policy" or somthing which I didn't notice as I have poor vision. So couldn't message friends had to down my pint and the pub probably lost £50 - £60 because I couldn't tell my friends where I am. I wouldn't mind the no phone policy if I wasn't on my own! What a wierd unfriendly place this is!

Only had a drink, I don't think they do food. Warm and cosy a place to visit if in Chester.

Well frequented inn. No music no mobile phones or laptops, no swearing ..quite difficult to define but keep finding myself heading to this place for a quiet reflective pint of best ...well worth a visit

Don't go in this place if you want to go on your phone, swear, sing smile, have fun or breath. Service is shocking. Beer is only their own and is terrible. Need to clean their pipes and give it a good hoover.

been going here for over 12 years now, typical Samuel Smith pub, cheap, staff friendly and best thing about this one is the fact there's always a decent atmosphere due to them banning technology so always plenty of chatter going on

We go to Chester for a weekend every year. This is our favourite pub. Good quality beer, great value, great atmosphere. Also digital detox is a great idea, I couldn't see anyone inside on their phones.

Over 20 years in the locality and never visited this place before. What a mistake, so will return. Try the hostelry yourself.

Not for everyone but it works for me! A lovely historic building. A great central location (where the park and ride busses meet the city walls). Proper real ale (Sam Smiths) and a fine selection of bottled beers and ciders. Good potato crisps. Civilised rules (no digital gadgets, no swearing, no track suit bottoms). Lovely friendly, helpful staff. And, unbelievably, £2.60 a pint! What's not to like?

Up the stairs on second floor. Long narrow bar. Very old pub, no side windows, very dark inside. Popped in for a beer which was fine and at a reasonable price. Toilets were upstairs. Enjoyed my visit.

I was asked by Barman to put away my phone away and also my wife..but 2 other Women continued to use their phones..allegedly its a Digital Detox pub..the woman were not asked to put their phones away..I think it is a racist pub..coz I am Scottish..would not recommend it..no atmosphere..no nothing!!

Told off for both swearing and using my phone which apparently is breaking their rules. Loved it, good beer, nice staff and ended up chatting to all sorts of people. Will be back next time I’m in town.

Sam Smiths pub, dimly lit, there's usual beers on offer, plus the threats of expulsion for violating their draconian "rules" around electronic devices. The Owner of this brewery is proper old school, and hates innovation.

Very strange going into a Inn that looks dark but isn't the ambience of the Inn is like being back in time, there's a sign saying no swearing allowed or you'll be asked to leave lol no mobile device or laptops ..conversation is preferred or drinking lol

You know what you're getting when you go into a Sam Smiths boozer, which means no phones, no swearing etc, which is fair enough but the cash only policy just seems plain churlish. The beer and choice is great along with the prices.

Amazing building ran by awful people who think they have an entitlement to life beyond their reach. No phones or swearing? How about no anti social behaviour, like most bars operate. Telling people what to do isn’t creating a civil atmosphere, it is controlling and oppressive. If you are old, white and bigoted, this pub is for you.

Really marvellous, a lovely feel to the place, high moral standards and kindness shown to us, a couple gave up their seat so we could sit down, unable to use bar stools. Wish i lived closer

What a treat and a rarity to go tradional boozer and be reminded that antisocial behaviour is so passe. You are kindly reminded not to swear or use technology, for some of our party this was challenging to say the least, personallybi found it refreshing. Swear jar on the counter wouldn't go a miss! though, just in case, be nice for a local charity!!
