Proper old school pub near the centre of Chester. We came in here on a Saturday during a televised football match. The place was busy and loud with loads of people drinking and chatting, I loved it. There was a wide selection of decent beers and the prices were good too. Nothing poncy or upmarket about this place, which is why I liked it so much.

Went to the spa with lunch. The spa treatments were excellent. The spa facilities were ok, some of it wasn't working and we were not shown how things would work ie, if someone would find us for our treatments and lunch. We had vouchers that I sent via email and were taken from us at the spa. The communications between the spa and restaurant could be better as the waiting on staff didnt know what was on our voucher and we had to find the images of the vouchers to show what we had

Booked a table and we arrived on time. But we were told to stand and wait at the door for no obvious reason. When seated, took the waitress a while to appear to ask us for drinks. Took longer to appear to order food. Ordered a Sunday sharing platter for two people, £40. It was dreadful. The beef bits you could pick out from the fat were ok. The ham was clearly out of a packet as it was all sliced and shaped exactly the same, obviously wasn’t sliced by hand and it was cold. The chicken, wow. Horrific. Not roast chicken, but a butterfly breast with the fake grill lines on and a horrible fake smoke flavour. I’ve had better in Wetherspoons. The mash was cold and tasteless. The pigs in blankets were again the cheapest of the cheap, terrible quality. The waitress never appeared to ask if the food was ok, or to offer us sauces, salt or pepper. We would have sent the food back but we had places to be and didn’t want to risk sending it back as it took so long to get the food in the first place. Criminally understaffed with incompetent staff.

Great selection of real ales and food is excellent, along with the building it is a brilliant venue for night out. Will (Dave) 😉 and his staff are really friendly. We were in Chester for a week & visited most nights for beer 🍻 & twice for a meal. Definitely the best pub we visited in Chester.

When my wife and I recently visited the “must see” town of Chester – which truly deserves its excellent reputation – we decided to have lunch. And we wanted something simple and light to get us through until dinner. As we walked along one of Chester’s many beautiful pedestrians-only streets, we came across the Chester Grosvenor Hotel. It looked promising so we went in and sat down in their restaurant, La Brasserie. We each had some beer and ordered a Katsu roll and finger sandwiches. Like the food quality, the ambiance and service were fine. But the shock came at the end of the meal. There were TWO extra charges: a 12.5% “service charge” and a 12.5% tip, each of which added £5.28 to our bill for a total of £10.56. In my view, these two charges represent bad management practices at this hotel and are the basis for my unfavourable review. Grosvenor’s management needs to remember that they are running a service business. The price of their services needs to be built into the products they serve. To blatantly reach into the customer’s wallet a second time is neither justified nor smart. And the tip? It now seems to be quite common in the U.K. that management takes it upon themselves to arbitrarily add the tip. This is muddle headed thinking at its very best. The word “tip” is an acronym that stands for “To Insure Promptness”. It is self-evident that this is an amount decided solely at the customer’s discretion, not that of the establishment. If management wants its employees to earn more, then pay them more and stop this practice. It seems that such tips applied by management may be removed from a bill upon request. This is nuts! Stop it! It is understandable that management would like to see employees earn as much in tips as possible. Perhaps a note on the menu such as this might serve to help the situation: “No service charges or tips have been added to your bill, but our employees sincerely appreciate tips that are paid in recognition of good service.” Bottom line? A decent luncheon experience completely negated by extra charges. Needless to say, not going back.

My mum and I visited here for afternoon tea. All of the staff were so polite and professional. It really made the difference and something that you don’t see so regularly in hospitality this side of the pandemic. All of the food was excellent and it was nice to be offered extra sandwiches too. We chose the gentleman’s option and it’s highly recommended. My only tiny bit of constructive criticism was the room was a bit tired in its decoration. Slightly faded glory.

Birthday treat for afternoon tea. Put us in a room on our own so I asked to be moved to sit with everyone else dining...which they did. Sandwiches brought out on saucer sized plate then another plate with cakes and scones. I asked why not served on 3 tier cake stand as she gave some poor excuse as to cakes might melt so they don't use them hower other diners had them! They forgot to bring the strawberries and cream and champagne we ordered. Waitress was moody and unhelpful and we had to go into bar for a cocktail as they were now shutting!! Huge amount of money for poor food and service. Never been back!

I was treating a friend to an overnight stay near Chester with the first day being spent on a shopping spree in the city, something that was long overdue thanks to the covid lockdown. I tried to find somewhere a little different for us to eat that lunchtime as the restaurant we would normally use had sadly closed permanently. We found this a rather unusual place and opted for the tapas style small plates. With hindsight, we should have ordered less than we did as the portions were larger than expected. The decor was a little odd and not particularly to my taste. The service was fairly attentive without being over the top and as far as we could tell, all covid guidelines were followed.
