Had a brilliant afternoon at The Lock, atmosphere was amazing, me and my partner had a lovely burger and chips canalside. The lovely barmaid Leia looked after us and went out of her way to make sure we had a brilliant experience.

Went to the beer garden as it was sunny and thought it would be pleasant. Sadly it wasn’t a great experience for an early Friday evening as visitors to Chester. We were approached by drug dealing going on. A very strong smell of cannabis from those people, who were under influence of drink and/or drugs. Service was very slow at the bar. Very limited choice of wines. Didn’t have food but overheard it was average. We drank our drinks and left as felt uncomfortable with some of the people who approached us. Sad situation for a well positioned pub.

Short break in Chester and popped into here on a Friday evening after a long day walking. Atmosphere was good, food and drink also good (sizing gave value for money as well) and the service from Stu was very friendly. Had starters (chunks of chicken in crispy batter) and mains (including pie of day) and Stu took the time to check if we were ready for mains rather than just bringing them out - would come again!

Beautiful place in a perfect location

Looking for somewhere to eat in Chester, came across the The Lock Keeper, great music playing, just a little on the loud side for us personally. Ordered two main, curry of the day and lasagne, both very tasty and value for money, plus hubby said a cracking pint of Guiness, might return for more tonight. Nice friendly staff

Me and my friends had dinner here yesterday and the service was terrible. The waitress was screaming the wrong table number and after an hour we were waiting when we went to ask about our food the waiter was absolutely rude and got defensive. When the food came (after it sat at someone else’s table and went back to the kitchen) was bland, unseasoned, and my meal had a miserable portion of fries. Should have gone to wetherspoons instead.

Bad food, rude woman. Went round the pub with our tablea food as she didnt know where it was for. Went everywhere but us and as we got up to get it she was rude to us. Food was cold and small portions for price. Better go wetherspoons as the quality of the food is better and the staff are friendlier. Loud, obnoxious woman.

Had 2 excellent pints of Timothy Taylor Landlord (£4.50/ pint) Lovely surroundings by the canal, nice helpful Staff. Nice outside seating areas

A pub I always look forward to visiting on any trip to Chester I take is The Lock Keeper Pub ,been here before on many occasions over the years, always had a good time and so it proved on our latest visit to here. A great looking pub, interior is cosy,pubby decor and furnishings, a great looking serving bar and plenty of seating options spread throughout this pub both inside and outside looking out onto the busy and beautiful Shropshire Union Canal, its just a great pub to unwind in. We were here on a bitterly cold February afternoon, pub was busy with a great atmosphere, we ordered a beer each ,these were served in excellent condition being iced cold and sparkling, we chilled out and soaked up the great vibe in this busy and popular pub while we sipped our beers. My beer was really good, a golden, light and hoppy lager style beer bursting with taste and very easy to drink especially when served freezing cold as in this pub, it was just so good being in such a lovely pub enjoying a quality brew and sat with my twin brother ,best beer companion in the world. We both really enjoyed our beers in here before we moved on and although our visit was only fleeting as on every other visit to The Lock Keeper Pub we had a great time. The Lock Keeper Pub is easy to locate along Frodsham Street, a street and area teeming with pubs, bars, cafe's and restaurants. Opening hours are; Monday to Sunday, open from 11am. Well worth checking out if you're in the area or planning a trip to Chester.

Shocking Sunday Roast . Barely warm and poor quality . Who runs this pub ? The staff need some support . It’s already been shut down once and won’t last long if this standard continues. Such a shame because it has lots of potential. No doubt they are waiting for the passing tourists in the better weather to get a few quid in . Even the beer is off , had a pint of Timothy Taylor’s which is a favourite of mine and it was awful . Even beer needs taking care of . Staff were good but too few of them .

Visited with family for a birthday lunch. Member of staff (Stu), he was very helpful and accommodating, nothing to much trouble. Reason for four stars, length of time waiting on food. Overall would happily call in again.

I just came in to do lightkeeper and were served by the Bar stuff called Alicia and it was a pleasure to have somebody pour a pint of Cruzcampo in the correct manner. Absolutely amazing service would highly recommend

We have been here few occasions and every visit is fabulous. Meals are good portions and tasty.drinks selection is big and pub itself very nice atmosphere

Excellent sunday roast, we had the beef and the chicken - both really nice with lots of veg and we like a lot of gravy- there was plenty

No heating and freezing cold. Short staffed only one person behind the bar. Long wait for meal. Very limited menu. Scampi and chips tasteless. Very overpriced.

Closing down no food being served

Pub always looked lovely from outside. Visited with high hopes but was terribly disappointed Found inside to be very dark and dismal . Staff were just unkempt creased shirts etc. Please Don't go near lady's toilet's. I don't think or I know they haven't seen a clean for months. They wipe over the basins but the toilet's were Indescribable!!!! But OK. We enjoyed our food But won't be rushing back. Can't overlook general feel or look of interior, staff, Ladies toilet's.

The staff we friendly and attentive. The food was delicious I liked the 3 dishes for £18 it was it was so good to have a wide variety.

The pub is pet welcome, so us we had been there with our little dog we went there. Nice place and good meal. Service was good too. Definitely we recommend it and will return there again.

This was our 2nd visit to the loch keeper, and as per the 1st visit, it was just as good! Staff very polite and accommodating when requiring about tweaking the food. Very relaxed and the food was yummy.... Pity we can't visit Chester every week just to eat here!

A really good place for lunch by the river. We were just passing and passed in for a great print and three tasty dishes from the small plates menu. The food was excellent and the service friendly and efficient.

The outside area is lovely to just sit and watch the world go by. Only called in for a drink. Didn't eat, so I can't comment on food. Inside could do with brightening up because outside area speaks volumes.

Found this pub on an overnight stop on a Monday evening. Chose the Monday meal deal - ribeye steak and a bottle of red wine. Both were much better quality than we expected- a very enjoyable meal, finished off with a very good sticky toffee pudding. Friendly service too. Would definitely recommend.

What a fantastic place. Fabulous food in a great setting, and the most attentive guy serving tables. Brilliant

Over for the weekend as my friend had taken part in Three Peaks Challenge. Great discovery. We had the rib eye steak which was cooked to our taste. The cherry tomatoes, black peppercorn sauce and chips were delicious. We had a cocktail each and drinks. The staff were very friendly. We will definitely be back.

Lovely pub & staff but let down by the food, frozen chips, soggy batter on fish & cold mushy peas. Very slow service (had to wait nearly 1hr even when quiet!).

Been in a couple of times when visited Chester and has always been lively and friendly. Today we decided to have food and it was amazing. I had the ploughman's which was full off taste and really good value for the quantity. My wife had the salmon which was delicious. The staff can't do enough for you and I wish every pub I visit they were as keen. I hope to come back to Chester in the near future and will defo be back in here.

It was just a flying visit but I would love to come back for more than just one drink and sit by the canal or have some food. Something about the place had such a good atmosphere.

Arrived at 11.59am was rudley told we don't open until 12. I asked if we could sit at table outside until 12 and was huffed at and told I suppose so. All this was happening while the bells were chiming 12. So can't rate the food or drink as we decided to go up the road to a much more welcoming pub to spend our money.

Had missed our bus home so went in here to get a drink while we waited for the next one Busy outside on the terrace but no one inside. Greeted pleasantly on entry and directed to the bar when we said we justed wanted a drink. Bar man was staring as he computer screen and completely ignored us until prompted. Reluctantly took our orders for 2 lemonades. Lemonade was on tap. Cheap at £2 a large glass but not sure it was lemonade. No sweetness to it. Tasted more like soda water or tonic. Interestingly people on table next to us were complaining about the taste of the Cola. Food looked good and folks were clearing their plates. Watched the serving staff whilst we had our drinks and they were very good and cheerful What a shame that barman let them down as did the "lemonade" Ladies toilet could do with a bit of a tidy up too

Good spot for a lunch time meal and a drink. Beers were enjoyable and the service was good with attentive and friendly staff. Main complaint was the quality and value for money of their food. Their Ploughmans Lunch was disappointing, especially given it cost £15. It contained basic ingredients in very small quantities. Their Summer Salad was well presented, however, it contained odd taste combinations. It's only salvation being the flatbread smeared with hummus. Their onion rings were golden and crispy but were incredibly oily. We won't be eating there again although we may pop in for the occasional pint.

A very pleasant place to eat and/or drink overlooking the canal. Both the food and service were exemplary.

Fantastic, friendly staff that made us feel welcome. Dog friendly and considerate. The food was great, especially the steak. We would recommend visiting there soon.

The setting is lovely right on the canal staff very professional food and drinks great we had a lovely visit.if you are here on a Monday I recommend 2 steaks and bottle of wine great deal

Came in for a chicken roast dinner. The food was aberloutely amazing. The waitresses were lovely too! Would definately recommend this place!

Honestly we didn’t eat here, after we went to the bathroom (ladies And Gentlemen). The floor for both were horrible, the whole roll of toilet paper was on the floor, in men’s room, someone was washing the potatoes in the toilet and we witnessed a potato dropped on the floor and he put it back to the pot. We really had to go.

Idyllic. Beautiful location, handily for the name it is on the canal. We enjoyed a lovely drink amongst like minded folk. The pub? It's a keeper.

Love a nice pint in the sun here, nice view of the canal. Has a nice patio area with plenty of seating. Update 2024. Wow fantastic food, had, light bite steak, blue cheese and caramelised onion sandwich and it was the business. Staff are super friendly too.

The food here was amazing, only had lunch,my husband had a steak sandwich, he said it was one of the best he has had, I just had hummus and flat bread, the hummus was home made - delicious. We have eaten here during covid and wasn’t impressed with the food, but today it was gorgeous.

We stayed at the Moll Hotel for 2 nights and ate at the Lock Keeper both nights. Lovely food - steak meal with bottle of wine was delicious on the Monday.

I come here every Thursday for the evening quiz which is loads of fun. The food is amazing. Well worth the price of the product. Had one of the best Chicken wings BBQ starter here. The staff are very friendly and polite with excellent service. Highly recommend coming here for food and quiz entertainment

Very good choice of beer but the whole place looked like it needed a good clean

Legit roast beef and very friendly staff, top job! We had a lovely roast beef for mother's day in a chill and relaxed atmosphere by one of the Chester canals.

Was there before lock down. Was very grubby inside and out, tables were sticky. Maybe new people have taken over. That one time was more then enough.

Looked at the Sunday roast but decided not to eat here. The toilets had been signed as checked at 12pm when they opened and both ladies and gents loos were over flowing with used paper towels by 12.20pm. The toilets look like they hadn’t been cleaned from previous service last night. Staff were friendly and attentive as soon as you walked in.

Roast dinner was unreal, best I've had for a long time by a mile. Great staff, nice atmosphere id recommend to anyone looking for a drink or something to eat.

When we arrived we were told Sea Bass was off and so was the fish and chips which then Limited the menu by quite a lot then the pint of beer that I got was cloudy and had to be sent back. Service was really good by the staff but food wise, poor menu.

It's a nice pub by the canal. Staff were friendly and provided the kids with water and straws to keep them entertained. Beer was good, and the atmosphere within the pub seemed friendly. Would return
