Great food, My party ordered the Mixed grill, hunters chicken and the curry, all dishes were very tasty and plentiful. Good value for money. Staff were very welcoming as always! highly recommend booking as they do get busy. In the summer months the beer garden is lovely next to the canal.

I had booked with The Broken Cross to celebrate both mine and my husbands birthdays 4/5th January for the friday night 3rd, however, upon arriving I discovered I was actually booked for 3rd Feb and had paid a deposit as there were 14 of us. As we were considering what to do as it was quite busy, the lady running the place, ended up finding us some tables to push together and going out of her way to accomodate us all. She was amazing as I was quite distressed and along with my daughter sorted everything out for us. We had the best time, the food was lovely and they couldn't do enough for us. This was therefore, a brilliant experience and I was touched by how much trouble she had gone to, I thanked her at the end of the night, but didnt get her name, So, thanks again for a great night, we will definitely be back, if I can be trusted to book the right date.

The Old Broken Cross is a true gem along the canal—a perfect countryside pub that ticks all the boxes for an amazing visit! From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted by warm, friendly staff who make you feel right at home. The service here is consistently wonderful, with the team going above and beyond to make every visit memorable. The atmosphere is simply unbeatable. The cozy fires make it an ideal spot to relax on a chilly day, adding to the inviting charm that sets this pub apart. If you’re looking for some fun, the pool room is a great touch—perfect for a few games while you enjoy a drink or two. And let’s talk about the food! The menu is fantastic, with hearty, flavorful dishes that showcase quality ingredients and care. It’s pub food at its finest, and each meal pairs perfectly with the pub’s excellent selection of drinks. Whether you’re stopping in during a canal-side walk or just looking for a warm and welcoming spot to unwind, The Old Broken Cross is well worth a visit. Highly recommended for anyone who loves a great pub experience. Five stars!

My first experience since the Pub was refurbished. I attended with my elderly cousin who uses a walker. However the staff were most attentive in ensuring we found a suitable table. A mix of high and low seating very cosy armchairs. The decor is good and relaxing. The menus are extensive but l was disappointed they lack the Home Made signature dishes of the previous chef. We both chose Mixed Grill. Which arrived very quickly nice and hot. All but one item was cooked perfectly that being the pork sausage. I mentioned this purely as l feel they should consider a Cumberland textured sausage, as the variety they use is dried out and solid in texture. I can’t rave about the food other than to say it was acceptable. Would l return ? Yes to test out a Sunday Lunch. Please note Disabled Access is via the front of pub not rear carpark.

I’ve been in here several times , I always have the same chicken fajitas, but this time it had some hot very hot spice I just couldn’t eat it it was awful chicken was dry and this stuff that was on I’ve never had before, anyway waited and waited then when my partner had finished they came to ask if everything was okay, I explained an she said I’ll get the manager who did come over with the worst attitude saying what’s up with it I said I’ve tried to eat but I can’t but because I said I didn’t want to pay for it , she said she would check what the manual says there allowed to take off , she came back and said ok I’ll knock 20% off coz I had some chips and a tortilla, I said well I’ll pay you 20% coz I only picked bits , she really didn’t like it coz she said that was the best they could do. After a while she agreed so I paid 4 pound for something that was too hot to eat , will never go again . Total price £18.99….

Having lived in a nearby town for some time, we finally visited this charming canalside pub for our Sunday teatime jaunt. I never order a Sunday lunch but on this occasion I did and I wasn't disappointed. The 'mound' of food on the plate with a generous portion of perfectly cooked roast beef took me by surprise. Plenty of vegetables, perfect mashed potato meant our bellies were filled to the brim. My wife opted for an 8oz burger with added cheese and it was topped with onion rings, salad and chips. We had no room for dessert due to these brilliant portion sizes and it won't be long before we return. All staff were pleasant and accomodating especially when I asked for some extra gravy. Thankyou to you all.

Thought I'd try this place a go with my friend. We both ordered spaghetti carbonara.... Sauce was horrible and runny. Garlic bread was extremely thick and stodgy, was bigger than the plate itself. Obviously cheap cubes of chicken, several pieces including some chopped up bacon... more than the meal itself!! Pay £17.50 for this dish you'd expect much better quality, tasted super cheap and chef hasn't put much thought into it, just pure laziness! Shocking!! We got served by this young girl as a waitress, yes I know she asked how our meal was but that was right at the beginning when we didn't have a chance! Me and my friend decided after a few mouthfuls how poor our meal was. I didn't eat it all, I did eat all of that pasta because I was starving and my friend barely had half. I left a lot of the chicken, bacon and sauce behind as well as the super stodgy garlic bread. When the young girl took our plates at the end, she asked how the meal was and my friend said we weren't impressed with the sauce. The young waitress was incredibly rude and passive aggressive, made it clear she was peeved off with us. She had a go because we didn't say at the beginning, well yeah because we were barely into a meal! I'm so annoyed how she reacted, my friend was just telling the truth politely and she was so horribly rude, really not acceptable! Never had such an expierence in my life whilst going out for meals out! The waitress didn't apologise, didn't pass anything on and walked off in a huff. Disgusting behaviour. We payed a lot of money for this as well, not happy with meal and service.

A small family group recently went here for some lunch after a full day of activities. We were warmly welcomed by the staff and seated promptly. They took our order and brought out drinks quickly. After deciding on our food we placed another order and waited a short time for the food to arrive. We had a mixture of Sunday roasts and burgers. The food was hot, well portioned, fairly priced, and cooked to a good standard. The only item we felt was a bit of a letdown were the burgers that were quite dry. But, based on the rest of the food at our table I think that can be chalked up to a one-off and give them the benefit of the doubt as everything else was delicious.

We'd all ordered been served and eaten in 45 minutes which is excellent for a busy Sunday with lots of people watching the football. I had a apple and blackberry crumble for desert which was outstanding. The only thing I'd say is I'd like more custard with it only because I love custard and would drink a bathtub given a chance. Seemed a nice enough place, but when we called in one evening for a drink, we discovered children aren't even allowed to sit outside after 7pm (I knew they weren't allowed in the bar, as I'd read that already). There were no other customers at all (9pm after a busy bank holiday) but we had to drink up quick and get away. I know places have good and bad days, but I personally will steer clear in future, as we were polite, friendly and happy, but were made to feel very unwanted.

We visited many pub/bars and restaurants in Chester and one of the pub's me and my twin went to was called the Union Vaults'an excellent back-street boozer that offers an excellent range of drinks and was the most local pub we went to on our two day visit to Chester. Located on Egerton street'this superb pub has a traditional pub interior with fantastic fixtures and features and excellent seating area's throughout it's whole interior. There's a bagatelle table plus a darts board and a fantastic arrey of local eclectic furnishings and decor and was a joy to visit. Of all the pubs we visited this was without a doubt one of the best pubs me and my twin visited as its a classic back-street pub with friendly staff and locals. We visited early on in the afternoon and it was very busy which is how we like pubs as the atmosphere is so much better when pubs are busy. When we visited here we had a few glasses of Timothy Taylor's brewery Landlord ale'a superb cask ale which where excellent and really well priced. This is a fantastic back-street boozer thats in an excellent area of Chester and it's well worth visiting if your around this area.(This is my second review of the Union Vaults). Opening Hours. Monday-Sunday-10.00-00.00. Hours May Differ From Above.
