The Arkle Bar and Lounge in Cheshire West and Chester

My mum and I visited here for afternoon tea. All of the staff were so polite and professional. It really made the difference and something that you don’t see so regularly in hospitality this side of the pandemic. All of the food was excellent and it was nice to be offered extra sandwiches too. We chose the gentleman’s option and it’s highly recommended. My only tiny bit of constructive criticism was the room was a bit tired in its decoration. Slightly faded glory.

Had afternoon tea, staff were really good, friendly efficient and stylish. The sandwiches cakes and tea were excellent, and really nice surroundings. I think price wise it was pretty good for a couple, a nasty burger and a coke for two is not far off the same price, and no where near as good.

Food and service pretty well faultless but when did the Grosvenor start letting in men in scruffy shorts? Let’s keep up the standards!

From the helpfulness of the conciege (I’m a wheelchair user) to the welcome and helpfulness of all staff this was a truly amazing experience. Afternoon tea was delicious with a great selection of teas and sandwiches. Staff were very attentive and friendly without being over bearing. We chose the gentleman’s selection was offered extra ( which I greedily accepted). We were then allowed to take our scones home with us which were packed up in a perfect little box. Will definitely visit again.

A return as it was so good the first time. Change of offerings for the afternoon tea and it was once again amazing. Really well looked after in a fine setting. Well done. We will be back.

Understated elegance. Great range of teas. Sandwiches good. Cakes superb. Local fine bone china. In contrast to the most recent previous review we found the staff friendly and helpful and the service speedy (without us feeling rushed) and excellent. A present from our wonderfully thoughtful daughter, but we will be back.

We had the Afternoon tea. The food was ok, but way overpriced. But the main problem was the service. The staff were sullen and not attentive. The coffee and tea cold. Not to be recommend

Just home from Afternoon tea. Very disappointed at value for money. I was given a gift voucher and was expecting something grand. Alas it is probably the worse afternoon tea I have had in a long time. Poor service for such highly repected establishment. Maybe it was because we had a voucher, as we looked around the room the paying customers seemed to have a larger portion. i.e my gluten free scone was the size of a 50pence piece and chocolate cake that was too sweet to eat.

Food was nice, surroundings was nice, it was just very over priced for what you actually got. Would I go again, no not really

Although staff were pleasant and one in particular was friendly they all looked like they preferred to be somewhere else. This was a Xmas present from family which was a lovely idea but disappointed with food. Finger sandwich’s were not as tasty as some we had elsewhere, I had the battered fish sandwich which was exactly that a posh fish butty !!!!! With a very small coronation chicken with mango on a tiny piece of bread. The flavours were nice but the battered fish was greasy. The scones were delicious but the cakes were extremely rich and sickly. The tea was weak and warm ! Then we were hit with a £9.20 service charge……. All in all not a good time

We booked a table for six, for our mothers 80th Birthday treat, but left disappointed. The service and some of the food was way below what we had expected. Two small round tables had been pushed together to accommodate us, not ideal. We were told that we would have the champagne and strawberry’s to start. We had all drank the champagne before the strawberries arrived. The only sandwich with any real flavour was the smoked salmon. We were told we could have more sandwiches, when we asked they took over an hour. Teas arrived very late and we had eaten misting the food beforehand. Birthday cake placed on table without any kind of celebratory effort. Waited 30 minutes for knife to cut cake. One of the staff wearing a ‘G’ badge was wonderful, sadly others seemed less interested with one boardering on officious.

Fantastic afternoon tea, and top level service. As a couple we had a really enjoyable experience. Good selection for afternoon tea that was presented beautifully. Highly recommend the gentleman’s afternoon tea. The service received was excellent and set within fantastically decorated room.

Certain of the items served were very good i.e. the fish sandwich and the salmon sandwich but the sandwiches were very poorly filled and not very appetising.. Also disappointed with service at our special afternoon Gentlemans and indulgent tea outing. The voucher was for 2 x standard experiences and we paid an extra £42 for th upgrade so a total of £117 INCLUDING 12.5% service charge we had to chase all the way to order then the plates were served but no tea at all until chased again.......the scones were served delicious but no tea again On the whole very disappointing especially as 3 couples came in quite some time after us yet were served well before

Lovely classic surroundings in the centre of a Chester. Staff ( from doormen to waiting staff were polite attentive and delightful. My wife is gluten intolerant and her afternoon tea was every bit as tasty and varied as mine. The sandwiches and cakes were delicious and tastefully served and more tea coffee and sandwiches were offered ( but none were needed) . Bought as a present , we didn’t quite know what to expect and thought it might not be our cup of tea (no pun intended) but it was a lovely and we really enjoyed it.

What a bitter disappointment! The best point is that the staff were very welcoming. The afternoon tea itself was awful! Mediocre sandwiches, very sickly cakes (2 each) and 2 scones each. The coffee was served in a pot that the lid kept falling off every time you poured a cup ( someone could easily get scalded), the refill pot arrived minus the lid and the table next to use also received their coffee in a pot minus the lid. The afternoon tea is well overpriced and added to the shock of the addition of 12% service charge which amounted to £14.60 for 3 people it certainly left us with with a bitter taste. We did ask for the service charge to be removed - not worth it. Will definitely not return again!

Having read the previous reviews I was a bit apprehensive but I have to say that our experience was really very good. We received a warm welcome and were quickly seated and a waitress was with us immediately to ask if we were happy with the choice of sandwiches on offer. We ate all the sandwiches and were offered more. The cakes and scones were superb and of a good size, the champagne was good and we were given iced water. I would have given our experience five stars but for the fact that they were very slow coming with our hot drinks and we had to prompt the waitress as we were parched and almost at the point of finishing our food before they arrived. Did not detract from the afternoon though, just something they could polish up on.

Sadly, despite attentive & personable staff, the sandwiches in particular were mediocre, unimaginative & a few were downright awful. I absolutely love afternoon tea & had put Chester Grosvenor on a pedestal, but the whole experience was lacking.

Reservé el té de la tarde como un regalo para mis 30 mejores amigos. Nos reservamos un domingo por la tarde y estaba muy ocupado. Esperamos bebidas en el bar pero no había nadie allí para servirnos. El servicio fue lento durante todo el año, y parecía tener poco personal y exceso de reservas. No parecía haber nadie con la experiencia requerida en la gestión del piso en este día dado el servicio lento. La comida era bastante buena, pero por casi 50 por cabeza, se esperaba un servicio superior. No volvería a visitar para el té de la tarde. Personalmente, no encontré el Arkle Bar particularmente agradable. Está oscuro, cargado y para mí, un poco anticuado. La brasserie al lado de este bar dentro del Grosvenor era mucho mejor en términos de atmósfera y estética. Realicé una queja al Grosvenor con respecto al servicio por correo electrónico y trataron mi consulta de manera justa y rápida, lo que rescató lo que de otro modo fue una visita extremadamente decepcionante.

A second visit for myself and a third visit for my friend, however not as special as our last visit. We were greeted with a warm welcome but there didn’t seem to be enough staff. Sandwich fillings were good but a greater selection of different bread types would be appreciated. There weren’t any fresh cream cakes on the cake selection which was disappointing I’m not a lover of the macaroon type cakes currently being offered. My friend and I love afternoon tea but compared to The Midland, The Lowry and Cloud 23 at the Hilton in Manchester the Grosvenor fell short on what was served. The room was also very cold.

This restraunt/lounge is a life time experience, The food is really nice aswell as the people, I would advise people to come here.

¡Soberbio! Poco decepcionado, ya no obtienes el pastel de frutas con el té de la tarde del caballero, pero los pasteles que obtuvimos fueron muy agradables. Se dedica mucho esfuerzo a la comida y al servicio. Lo mejor en Chester. El café llegó después de haber terminado nuestro champán, mi preferencia personal es que me gusta que mi café se sirva desde el comienzo de la experiencia.

We called in late evening and had a few drinks, the waiter was attentive and atmosphere was great. Nibbles provided and drinks were delicious. Definitely go again, we did go the brasserie first and the service was horrendous.

My first time visit to the Arkle was a pleasant surprise as the main bistro was fully bookedA haven of tranquility away from the hustle an bustle of the busy hotel foyer it’s a delightful place to while away a couple of hours whilst waiting for the shops to open The bacon sandwich is magnificent really tasty bacon and home made tomato ketchup it turns a simple dish into a culinary tour de force Highly recommended I will be returning at the earliest opportunity Bravo

This was a thank you from a friend, and a superb one to remember. We chose to have afternoon tea as ' lunch ' as there is always a feast at one of these events.We were a few minutes early, but were seated at our reserved table immediately. The service was outstanding throughout, courteous, totally professional, and any allergies asked about on arrival. The fayre was described, and asked which tea we would like.The quality of the bread was excellent, and we were asked to top up and any in particular which we would like... Loved the bluberry éclair !!! wow... and the orange choc mouse cake. The ambience was good, ( just cannot understand the ' poor review ' a few months back from the London reviewer ) Over the past few years sampled a few afternoon teas, and this rates very very highly..

I am a big afternoon tea enthusiast, which is probably not making this any better. Perhaps it is wrong of me to compare it to various afternoon teas I had in London but I have to say this has been the least satisfying experience.

This was a beautiful treat and as a t was for a birthday they even did a chocolate cake decoration with happy birthday written on, the service was brilliant and the choice of teas was second to none.

Service was good, surroundings and ambiance was as you would expect, our afternoon tea was both the gentleman’s afternoon tea and the original afternoon tea, I had written to inform them of a Diabetic option and they provided an excellent afternoon tea alternative, we were very impressed, they had thought of everything, well done Arkle Chef's. We come every year before Christmas for afternoon tea. Sadly the service was extremely poor this year. Restaurant was by no means full and plenty of staff but couldn't seem to bring us anything. Table was booked (months in advance) for 2pm but didn't sit down until ten to 3 with no explanation or apology. For the supposed standard of the place and the price we really don't expect to have to ask 3 or 4 times for the tea in our afternoon tea!! Had to keep asking for additional sandwiches which took an age to arrive. Sadly won't be returning after its been a traditional for us for a few years.

Nos llevaron a una bonita y discreta mesita con un pequeño sofá justo para 2 personas. Nos quitaron los abrigos y nos informaron de las diversas opciones disponibles en cuanto a emparedados y bebidas calientes. Nos acomodamos en sándwiches de dedo y sándwiches de caballero y disfrutamos de una copa de champán mientras esperábamos a que se sirviera la comida. El servicio es tal que no se siente apresurado y puede sentarse y relajarse y disfrutar de la experiencia. ¡Toda la comida era deliciosa - los 4 pequeños pasteles eran divinos y el té del desayuno inglés también era encantador aunque la tetera era muy pesada! En general, pasamos un momento agradable y relajante y nos las arreglamos para comer todo lo que nos sirvieron. Un regalo encantador, pero no me lo gastaría mucho si me estuviera pagando, debo admitir.

Realmente disfrutamos de nuestro té de la tarde en el bar Arkle. La bienvenida y el servicio fueron de primera clase, el servidor explicó las opciones que podríamos hacer. Nice environment and table service even when you are ordering a drink. Love the cocktails here and the atmosphere is busy but not overcrowded. Service can be a little slow at times but we prefer it when it’s not overbearing. Try the Posh Martini!!
