When my wife and I recently visited the “must see” town of Chester – which truly deserves its excellent reputation – we decided to have lunch. And we wanted something simple and light to get us through until dinner. As we walked along one of Chester’s many beautiful pedestrians-only streets, we came across the Chester Grosvenor Hotel. It looked promising so we went in and sat down in their restaurant, La Brasserie. We each had some beer and ordered a Katsu roll and finger sandwiches. Like the food quality, the ambiance and service were fine. But the shock came at the end of the meal. There were TWO extra charges: a 12.5% “service charge” and a 12.5% tip, each of which added £5.28 to our bill for a total of £10.56. In my view, these two charges represent bad management practices at this hotel and are the basis for my unfavourable review. Grosvenor’s management needs to remember that they are running a service business. The price of their services needs to be built into the products they serve. To blatantly reach into the customer’s wallet a second time is neither justified nor smart. And the tip? It now seems to be quite common in the U.K. that management takes it upon themselves to arbitrarily add the tip. This is muddle headed thinking at its very best. The word “tip” is an acronym that stands for “To Insure Promptness”. It is self-evident that this is an amount decided solely at the customer’s discretion, not that of the establishment. If management wants its employees to earn more, then pay them more and stop this practice. It seems that such tips applied by management may be removed from a bill upon request. This is nuts! Stop it! It is understandable that management would like to see employees earn as much in tips as possible. Perhaps a note on the menu such as this might serve to help the situation: “No service charges or tips have been added to your bill, but our employees sincerely appreciate tips that are paid in recognition of good service.” Bottom line? A decent luncheon experience completely negated by extra charges. Needless to say, not going back.

My wife and I had lunch here. Location and ambience La brasserie is located in the Chester Grosevenor Hotel - a faded grand dame in the centre of Chester. We like the location and the tables by the front windosws are great for watching the world go by. Were were appropriatley welcomed by the doorman and showed to a great table by one of the waiters. Service On point and appropriate throughout our meal. Food This needs looking at. The menu is very limited, espcially for desserts and vegetarian options. The offerings are bland and uninspired, and the quality of what we had was just about acceptable. Drinks are better. For a hotel that houses the high quality Michelin star Arkle Restaurant, I find the menu and food at La Brasserie surprisingly sub-par. Go for drinks and snacks and some people watching, but there are much better options for a proper lunch in Chester.

What can you write to explain one of the best restaurants we have visited the food is exceptionally high class the price point is phenomenal but what makes this place awesome is the front of house staff special mention to Joe ask for a pay rise you absolutely deserve one you go the extra mile and would not look out of place in any high end restaurant.Highly recommend la brasserie at the chester grovenor.

Myself and my partner had been here June 2023 for our 19th anniversary and we were staying a couple of nights at Grosvenor. we had a table booked at La Brassarie for our first evening and greeted nicely on arrival even having our anniversary acknowledged and taken to our table but unfortunately although the food was very nice we were quite let down by the service being forgotten about a number of times. However to rectify this we were invited back so they could make it up to us and we came back August 2023! I have to say we couldn’t fault. From start to finish everything was so good the food, the service and the friendly staff. Obviously errors can happen and we seem to be quite unlucky at our June visit but I always say these things can happen and it’s how it is rectified that counts. They completely owned up to the errors and made it up to us. A big thank you to Aga the food and beverage manager as well as Abdullah and Jade.

Walked in today for a quick lunch with a chance to talk work, ordered the burger Fish and chips Caesar salad Burger was enjoyed and nothing left so all good The salad had very little dressing and two tiny slithers of anchovies, chicken slightly dry but good Fish was described as ok and for the price could have been cooked better Staff were excellent and made your feel special this made up for OK food in what is a highly perceived eatery

We have been visiting The Grosvenor for 35 years, and seen several changes, but our dining experience here for my wife’s birthday was slightly disappointing. We waited for longer than one would expect to be greeted - there was nobody at the restaurant entrance. There were no alcohol free drinks on the drinks menu save soft drinks. When I asked, I was told, somewhat sheepishly, that they only had one bottled 0% alcohol beer, which they had to get from another bar. There were no 0% gins (there are plenty around these days) and it seemed that there was absolutely no interest in offering anything other than the wines etc on the menu (£20 for a 375ml rose….!) We were then told that the venison mains wasn’t available…..not good for a 5* hotel in one of the country’s main game food counties. We had sea bass and lamb cutlets - both were excellent, as were our starters and dessert. It would have been nice to have had a steak knife for my lamb cutlets…..I should have asked for one, I guess, but it shouldn’t have been necessary to do so. All in all, at almost £180 (including an automatic 12.5% tip) an OK, but overpriced, experience. We’ve had equally, and in some respects better, food on our long haul flights with a leading Middle Eastern airline TBH.

It is saddening for me to write this but I have come home really disappointed in my experience at your restaurant today We arrived at 1:45 and the doorman was lovely and ran to get the wheelchair ramp for my mother in law We were so impressed and thought wow how attentive are the staff here That is were it ended We were sat at our table and our coats taken which was nice then we waited 20 minutes to be asked if we wanted a drink, we ordered then waited and waited for our food order to be taken We asked two waitresses to take our request and then a third arrived an we ordered Another 30 minutes later our food arrived ( it was lovely) the waitress put our side of carrots down and said she would be back with utensils She didn’t come back We ate our food nobody came to check if everything was ok until we had nearly finished when we said our chips we ordered hadn’t arrived We had finished our food when they did not return for a long time. we then waited unacknowldge for the desert menu When we did order we ordered two coffees as well as desert but they did not arrive either (we even were given a soup spoon rather than a desert spoon), we cancelled them and got the bill Then they arrived cold!!!!! I just was thoroughly upset at the services we got and paid £170 as Christmas special gifts for our mothers and did not feel special at all In fact we felt like we were more of a nuisance. Grovesnor you proper let us down

Had Sunday Champagne menu £45 per head for 3 courses. Chicken terrine starter contained sharp bone fragments. When reported to kitchen, no response. Don’t care about money off (we left gratuity when settling bill as waiting staff were lovely) but any kind of response, better still an apology would be minimum requirement from a well run kitchen. For main, one of us ordered cod and it wasn’t a complete meal, reasonable piece of cod but barely anything else with it. Champagne menu as it turns out is £45 per head plus the extra that’s needed to complete your meal. Again money is not the issue here, being mis-sold is. Need to up your game folks and treat the customer with respect.

The Brasserie in the Grosvenor hotel is an excellent choice for a meal in an upmarket restaurant at a reasonable price. The tables are well spaced out and, very importantly, you are able to enjoy your meal in a quiet dining room, rather than the usual cacophony of sound you get in most restaurants today. There is a good selection of dishes and excellent attentive service . The quality of the food is good, as you would expect from a hotel with a Michelin star restaurant in the Arkle

Booked a table for our anniversary and birthday celebration, shown to our table ordered our first course which we chose soup ,very nice and tasty was told it was a new recipe the only thing was it stated came with crusty bread, but did not receive any. Next main course husband had steak which he said was the best steak he's ever had but it again state comes with vine tomatoes, but he didn't get those either, sweet l opt for the chic tart it was that hard nearly broke the plate trying to get the fork through it , milk Ice cream no taste at all . To go with meal had bottle of wine cost £37 (one of the cheapest ones) looked it up and the exact wine in shops is £11.50 l know you pay more at restaurants but that was more than 3 times more not only that payed £1 for waiter to open and pore it , husband went to pour us another glass and waitress rushed to pour it for us another £1 according to bill then 12 1/2 % tip , l know l should of complained but as it was a special occasion didn't want to make a fuss , very expensive meal , don't mind the cost if it had been perfect, lastly trying to pay nobody came to us with machine so had to pay on way out at door, like you would expect to do at a cafe ,not a top restaurant . Will find somewhere else next time.

I was in the city with my son, who very kindly offered to treat me to dinner. Neither of us had dined here for some years, so decided to give it a go . We waited until after 5.00pm as the " casual dining " menu looked uninspiring, but the a la carte promised more. Without going into tedious detail , the surroundings, staff ,food and wine were wonderful. We shall be back .

We had a relaxing meal in reasonable surroundings. Service This was very good throughout our meal. All members of staff were polite, friendly and efficient. Food and drink Perfectably acceptable, but nothing to get excited about. The carafe of sauvignon blanc (NZ) was excellent value. All in all, a relaxing meal in decent surroundings - with very good service.

We stayed in the hotel and were initially planning to go to La Brasserie for the first night and then explore the rest of Chester for future meals. That first meal completely enchanted us to the point that we ate every meal of our stay at La Brasserie: breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They are very kind and understanding of families with young children. Although we feel our son is very well-behaved, it is unusual for a fine dining restaurant like La Brasserie to be as good as it is at serving a 6-year-old. Why did we come back so often? -> The bread and butter are delicious, fluffy, and they have a variety to sample. -> The fish and chips stand out as the best we had in England. Highly recommend. They are also consistent because we ordered it three times at different times during the day. They come with mushy peas and exceptionally tasty tartar sauce with capers in it. Yum. -> The soups are creamy and flavorful, and they change them up quite often. Again we ordered it four or five times and it was rarely a repeat. -> The desserts are absurdly good. There are quite a few ice cream shops in Chester, but we never tried the ice cream there. The desserts at La Brasserie are all amazing, but the sundae with ice cream and a brownie includes a wide range of other candies and treats. We can't recommend it enough for an adventurous young foodie.

Having been to the Grovesnor before and enjoyed great service and food I was so disappointed by how far it fell short on this visit when we returned with friends. On arrival there was no one at either desk to great us. The restaurant was barely a third full so no excuse of being busy. I had booked a table weeks previous for dinner to find on arrival the table only half laid. Instead of asking us to wait at the bar and providing a drink while this was rectified, we were ushered to sit down and the table laid around us. The was a poor start to an increasingly disappointing evening. Drinks were then offered. My partner asked to taste the beer that was on offer for the evening and we were all served our drinks. However, AT NO POINT DURING THE EVENING did anyone return to find out if he wanted a full pint or something else. For reasons I will outline below, there was no opportunity to get a drink for the rest of the evening so we all had one drink and he had a thimble full. We ordered starters; again fine and the starters were delicious. However, less than 5 minutes later the mains arrived. I asked the staff to take the mains back to the kitchen as we were still eating but they just stood there….we literally had to push our starters to one side to make space for the dinner plates. This is clearly totally unacceptable. We ate as quickly as we could so the food wouldn’t become cold with nobody checking on us, offering drinks or in fact any input at all. Every other table receives copious attention. I just couldn’t understand it. By now we had been in the restaurant for about and hour with three of us having one drink, one a shot glass worth of beer and a rushed meal. Clearly we wouldn’t be ordering pudding and coffee on this occasion. Their service charge was, eventually, removed from the bill but only after asking just leading to embarrassment all round. It seems the staff were totally oblivious to the woeful service that was provided that evening. I very rarely write negative revises and I am just so disappointed that a lovely evening was ruined and cut short. I’m afraid we won’t be returning.

I have dined here a few times and it has always been very good so as it was my husbands birthday thought I would treat him to the champagne dinner today! However, on waking this morning I felt decidedly unwell ( cold, sneezing and coughing which I didn’t think other customers would appreciate) so I called them at 8.30 am to cancel and I had noted that there is a £10 pp cancellation fee if less than 24 hours before the reservation. I understand having a cancellation fee is important for people who abuse the system by not turning up but when there is illness then I really think there shouldn’t be a charge but looking at my credit card I see I have been charged £20! I will not be returning .

Visited with a friend and we was sat down! We waited a while until we was served as the waitresses and bar tender were busy talking to a woman sat at the bar that was in there last time we visited (discussing clothes that she had brought in for them) obviously a regular. We ordered drinks and looked at the menu I would expect the menu to be a bit more than fried fish in batter and chips with mushy peas on a friday but that's what it was, I would have loved to see Seabass or Salmon! We also ordered a glass each of champagne each £14.00 a flute. The hotel is beautiful and immaculate but definitely a tourist destination.Would like to say also found the doorman to be very pleasant on our way out.

While visiting in Chester decided to call for morning coffee. We had to wait until 11am as the brasserie didn't open to then but it wasn't a problem. Not sure what I expected but it certainly wasn't the unfriendly member of staff that showed us to our table. She certainly needs a refresher course in customer care!! A second lady came to ask us what we were having to drink, which I thought was strange, without asking us what we wanted to order off the menu. Again this particular lady was totally disinterested in us and lacking in people skills. At that stage I suggested we should go elsewhere but as I was being treated by my daughter she wanted us to stay. As we were waiting for our coffee a gentleman came by the table and asked if everything was ok and would we like to order. He was absolutely lovely and very friendly. Scones were fresh with loads of cream but very little jam provided. The cup of coffee was not overly warm, even when it arrived at first, so by the time we got our scones you can imagine how cold it was. Poor service. Such a pity that these two members of staff think it is appropriate to act like this with their customers. It's not somewhere I would consider visiting again.

We are two ladies local to Chester and regularly walk into town for coffee. We decided to call in at the Grosvenor this week for our coffee, even though over the past few months we have been served by a very pretentious young lady.We could not believe that a sign was on the closed door saying “Morning coffee served from 11am”.This is “supposed” to be “The” 5 star hotel of our city and you can’t get a coffee until 11am ?!?!What on earth has happened to what used to be such an iconic hotel?

Having read several adverse reviews we dined here with some trepidation . We chose the early diner menu (at 6.30) @ £25 pp . The choice was limited but we each found courses to our taste so no problem . The wine list was extensive & the mark-up fairly significant -A New Zealand Albarino cost £45 .Service was ,on the whole good though an initial reluctance to take a coat to hang it up did not make an ideal start .!

We visited the bar and brasserie restaurant, we have been going to this hotel for over 40 years. The bar - no staff, sat at the bar and no staff to serve, it looked like they has one man doing several jobs and didn't have any one in situ to serve customers. The lunch was fantastic. The drinks were fantastic,. The service was terrible. To be spending £140.00 on a bottle of champagne and have to serve it to yourself says its all really. This place has really lost its way. To sum up 5 star prices and 3 star service

Went for lunch. Staff very friendly and efficient. Menu adequate and food fine if slightly expensive for what you get. But it is the Grosvenor. The only criticism is the lack of somewhere to hang our coats and the bench seats are too low to comfortably eat your meal.

We were staying at the hotel and had breakfast here and afternoon drinks before leaving. Lovely service on both occasions although it gets very busy in the afternoon (we got the last table) which could be problematic if you are staying. Breakfast pretty good. Unusually you order all dishes including continental which is a bit strange. Food was all ok. But I had cereal and it seems they don’t have semi skimmed milk. I asked for it but was served what was obviously skimmed which I don’t like. And please sort out the toilets which I notice others have commented on. The smell from the basement ones was foul - having eaten in the other restaurant the night before we knew to use the other ones which were lovely - as expected!

Have enjoyed lunching in The Brasserie a few times (always good) but never tried the festive lunch. It's a three course menu priced at thirty pounds for three courses. To be honest my hopes weren't too high given what struck me as quite affordable pricing. How wrong could I have been. We enjoyed the best festive lunch out that I can recall, a delight from start to finish. The food was divine - lovely flavours, textures, excellent presentation - particularly for the desserts. Service was friendly and attentive. The restaurant itself was nicely decorated for the festive season too. In summary it was superb.

We recently visited the hotel to treat ourselves to a festive glass of champers during a Christmas shopping trip. We had telephoned and told we didn’t need to book, on arrival we were told that we had to sit at the bar because they were fully booked (there were no other patrons in the bar and the tables were empty). We ordered a bottle of champagne and had to ask for napkins/olives etc. Whilst chatting and laughing we were told off by the staff because we were disturbing the empty room. We decided that we would take our custom to a more welcoming environment. We used the facilities and the dreadful smell of drains and damp made us physically wretch. We were predominantly there to check out the hotel with the intention of booking rooms for our next visit to Chester, alas we will be spending our hard earned cash elsewhere.

During a recent visit to Chester with friends we thought morning coffee at the Grosvenor would be nice. We arrived at 10.50am to be told to wait outside the restaurant doors as they didn’t open until 11am. At the opening time we were led by the same unsmiling lady to a table and left with menus. Our order was taken and brought to us by a polite and friendly young lady. When we asked for our bill it was brought by a person of completely blank expression with no eye contact at all. Not a very good impression by 2 members of the Grosvenor staff. At £5 a cup and not a biscuit in sight a disappointing visit.

I took someone special here, expecting top service given the price you pay. Instead, I had to ask for everything twice and wasn't offered the lunch menu. While the table next to us had the manageress pandering all over them, even squatting onto the floor to speak to them so they could look down at her. So I know service could have been better, but we were sadly neglected. We were sampling drinks on this occasion with the view of coming back for a meal. But the whole process just for drinks took just over an hour with about 15 mins of that drinking and the rest waiting. No apology and no smile. Very stern faces, very average cocktail and very poor service for a restaurant only 1/3 full. Obviously, a place for people with a lot of time on their hands. Great tasting coffee and a lovely gentleman at the door saved this review from getting the lowest score.

The Woodland is close to Ellemere Port Hospital and serves for much of the day. Usual "Stonehouse" fayre. Very pleasant member of staff who checked for allergies and carried our drinks to our table as I am dodgy on my feet. We took advantage of the offer of two meals for £11.75 from a reduced menu. Pleasant food, but nothing special, except the price.

Birthday treat for afternoon tea. Put us in a room on our own so I asked to be moved to sit with everyone else dining...which they did. Sandwiches brought out on saucer sized plate then another plate with cakes and scones. I asked why not served on 3 tier cake stand as she gave some poor excuse as to cakes might melt so they don't use them hower other diners had them! They forgot to bring the strawberries and cream and champagne we ordered. Waitress was moody and unhelpful and we had to go into bar for a cocktail as they were now shutting!! Huge amount of money for poor food and service. Never been back!
