A friendly greeting on arrival and we were shown to our table and orders taken. Whilst orders were being prepared we had a browse around the cafe at other produce you can buy to take away if you wish We ordered a baked potato with cheese savoury and a cheese scone and two hot drinks. The baked potato was filling and very tasty and the cheese scone was huge and came with butter a small ramekin of cheese cubes and tomato chutney and also very filling. We ordered some rye bread to take away and two strawberry tarts for two friends who absolutely loved them. A little out the way but worth the journey.

Amazing service from Caity and so intelligent about the local area around the oasis Washington. Made me feel so welcoming and wanted to stay longer. Staff like this I can see why it’s always busy. This young lady should definitely be promoted to manager in the future. What an acceptance and I’ve told many friends about this establishment. Way better than being served at other big name chains.

Stayed one night 22nd Feb. Great little place and very friendly. Room was nice and warm and cosy. We were with my young son and were tired so unfortunately we didnt get to have a drink at the bar but we'll defintately stay again. lovely cooked breakfast in the morning by Allen. Thank you so much.

Food was delicious and nice friendly staff. However it's not the cake orientated cafe we thought it was judging by pictures we had seen on Facebook and 2x Toasties and tea was £20! Could do with a bit better smoke extraction system as it was quite smokey from the cooking.

We haven't been to The Jackdaw because our booking for April 2025 isn't being honoured we found out this morning. See below. In December 2024 we booked our meal for a Saturday night in April 2025 at The Jackdaw. It was for my 70th birthday and we chose The Jackdaw as we'd eaten there before and had lovely meals. Today I received a call from Gillian, one of the owners, to say that they had a large party that night and so they couldn't accommodate us at the time we booked.Gillian asked if we could either go the night before or for Sunday lunch. We were travelling up to Warkworth on the Friday and didn't want to rush our journey and we may well eat out on the journey up. We had other plans for the Sunday so I said no to these options. I was amazed that we were being told they wouldn't honour our booking as we had clearly booked our meal before this large party. Gillian said she would ring me back. Rupert, the other owner, called back and explained about moving furniture around for the large party and how it was for someone who'd had their 50th birthday there and now wanted their 70th birthday there. He said couldn't we eat later as they served until 9 o'clock. I was astonished at this to be honest. We didn't want to eat later than the time we booked, and possibly be on our own at that time of night in the restaurant. Rupert did apologise but that doesn't make up for the fact they haven't honoured our booking. I am left feeling really disappointed and upset. This is not what I would have expected having booked the table in December. Terrible customer service in my view.

Was here today to help celebrate a friend's surprise 80th birthday party. The decor is amazing, the food delicious and staff so very friendly and efficient. What is great, is that the standard is consistant so I have no hesitation in recommending the venue to anyone - whether it's a casual stop by or for a celebration, Ball's will cater for your specific needs.

My partner and I dropped in on a Wednesday night whilst staying in the area and it happened to be Burger night. It was our second visit to the Moorcock in a space of a week while staying in Barnard Castle. The food was immaculate on both occasions. However the burgers were to die for!! I had the special burger, juicy, tasty, cooked to perfection, we left with very full belly’s! Service is warm and friendly, very tasty ales on tap (Red Dust!) and also, excellent value for the quality of the meal and service provided. If we’re in the area again, there’s no question of a 3rd visit. Thanks again!

Called for Sunday lunch. Service was good. The meal was OK, it was not superb and neither was it poor. The meal was reasonably priced and they had a good choice of beers as it has a full bar, and is as much of a pub as it is a hotel and restaurant.
