So wanted to visit here with my aunt and cousins visiting from New Zealand and could not because you are not dog friendly. I am sure you would find dogs are better behaved than a lot of children. So disappointing

Why do you exclude people with dogs? Every other cafe in Hexham has inclusive policies allowing people to take their dogs. I am unable to visit properly because of this. Shame on you!

After exploring the grounds of Hexham Abbey we came across this quaint tea room. Initially we were only going to have coffee but the temptation of beautifully presented cake was too much, as my generous slice of Victoria sponge did not disappoint. We sat outside and soaked up the atmosphere, and we tried to work out the different array of herbs growing along the wall. A truly beautiful place.

Before visiting the impressive Hexham Abbey (see separate Review), my wife and myself wanted to have some coffee and snacks. After a visit around time we opted for the Refectory Cafe which - as the name suggests - is co-located with the Abbey. I’m very glad we did as not only is it a very nice venue but both the tea and snacks (large cheese scone and ginger cake) were delicious. I would advise any other visitors to patronise the Refrectory Cafe either before or after their Abbey visit.

Following our holiday to Haggerston Castle and prior to journeying home to Lake District, we googled where we could stop off to have breakfast. The Refrectory Cafe came up as dog friendly and looked lovely. Parking was a nightmare. As I am also disabled it was a bit of a hike. However, we arrived to so called on its website dog friendly cafe to signs saying no dogs allowed unless guide dogs. Total waste of our time researching in advance, trek up to it. I suggest they alter website asap. Luckily we found The Mauro Lounge cafe bar who were not only dog friendly they offered water and dog biscuits too.

Cold and wet day, but a friendly warm welcome from enthusiastic staff at the Refectory Cafe. Bacon baps arrived swiftly, with strong tea. Plenty on offer for brunch/lunch if bacon baps aren't your thing, but it's v busy place and hence you'll need to wait perhaps a while for a free table on days when outside seating isn't an option due to weather. Parking nearby with the Northumberland Disc easily purchased from local outlets and plenty to see at the Abbey nextdoor and surrounding area. Well worth popping in to eat and drink.

Stopped here for lunch on Sunday, the cafe is in a lovely large spacious room at the side of Hexham Abbey. Had a bowl of home made lentil and bacon soup and the most delicious cheese scone. My partner had a BLT, generous sized roll, freshly cooked bacon, lots of salad and mayo on the side. A perfect lunch spot. There’s a lovely garden outside so imagine would be great in the summer. Highly recommend for lunch in the centre of Hexham but with a relaxed atmosphere.

What a wonderful setting - the cafe is attached to Hexham Abbey in the centre of Hexham with an entrance directly into the Abbey. The staff were friendly, helpful and efficient. We arrived at 1445 and there was only a very limited selection of cakes available with only one scone left. There was plenty of inside seating but all the outside tables were occupied. Most outside tables could seat up to 8-people and a few of these only had 2-people but with Covid and social distancing we did not want to join other people.

Visiting Hexham it is easy to see why it is the best place in England to live it is such a friendly place and the refectory cafe within the Abbey reflects what a lovely place this is. There are tables inside and in the garden as with the new arrangements we now live with the staff show you to your table and there are disposable menus with table service. There is a decent choice from a cuppa and cake to a salad or panini with a choice of locally sourced sandwich fillings. Everywhere is immaculate and fresh feeling the staff are really friendly unfortunately I didn’t note the ladies name who served us she was lovely making sure our order was exactly as ordered. There are toilets available with excellent disabled facilities. The setting in the Abbey grounds make this a bit special for a light refreshments stop. If the weather permits it is lovely sat outside a real tea garden. If your in Hexham try the refectory it’s well worth a visit.

My mother and I arrived for lunch today and it was busy, as to be expected in the Christmas period. We took a table and ordered at the counter as requested, paying up front for tea for 2, a jacket potato, and chicken liver pate with toast. The tea arrived after a while, and we drunk it whilst still waiting for our meal. We heard the staff saying they were short staffed and were repeatedly reassured that our meal would be with us soon, but once we had been waiting for nearly an hour and people who had arrived after us were getting their meals before us, we enquired as to where our food was. Firstly, there was no record of our order, even though you pay before you eat rather than at the end. Secondly, the staff member we spoke to seemed thoroughly unconcerned that a customer's order had been completely forgotten, and to add insult to injury we were told they had run out of jacket potatoes and pate, despite us having ordered and paid for them! We were offered a totally insincere apology with the excuse they were short staffed and a refund of our food order, not including the pot of tea which we would not have ordered had we not been eating as well. It seemed like they just wanted to get rid of us, rather than actually caring and doing something to fix their mistake. Overall, the service was absolutely abysmal, I can't comment on the food since we never actually got any, and I wish we'd gone to the Queen's Hall up the road instead.

I am always on the look out for gluten-free options and was offered a thin Chocolate 'brownie', My daughter enjoyed her tasty-looking piece of cake. Previous visits by family report enjoyable paninis, soups and main courses. The service was attentive, with smiling staff!I would love to see a better choice of gluten-free dishes as there is a very real demand for these types of foods today.

We called in here for a light lunch on the recommendation of a tour guide, and were very glad that we did. The Refectory is clean, bright and spacious, and located in a quiet garden area behind the cathedral. It has a tranquil feel, and in addition to the inside space there are a few tables outside as well. The Refectory offers a good selection of food both sweet and savoury. We succumbed to the ‘loaded scones’ and weren’t disappointed. Delicious. A pot of tea and a loaded scone (a large fruit one with butter, jam and cream) costs around £4.

One of the more hidden spots in Hexham, this is in a tranquil part of the abbey. Bright and light, it is a lovely place to spend time, taking in the atmosphere. Tea and cakes are excellent, although, as vegetarians, we do find the menu a little limited. Always welcoming and cheerful.

Best cafe in Hexham. Food is delicious and service is excellent. Menu not too extensive but this shouldn't be seen as a negative. Soups, sandwiches, jacket potatoes, cakes and scones all great. Lovely setting too, nice light, airy space. Can sit outside if weather good enough.

I came here for lunch today with a couple of friends. There was a good choice on the menu of baked potatoes, panini, soup and rolls etc. I had roasted vegetables in a bread bun with side salad and a coffee. All very good and substantial. One of my friends had the soup which was a smooth vegetable broth. She was also given a generous portion of bread and butter. It was very busy right from noon until half one. The ambiance is pleasant and the staff fairly efficient. The cakes looked good; I shall try one next time. And lastly, the toilets were excellent! Modern, spacious and clean.

Went here with me two sons and mam for lunch. We were greeted by a lovely smile off a young lady. A lovely menu and wonderful reasonably priced home made cakes. My son's sandwich came out teddy bear shaped which was a lovely touch. The cakes are wonderful and look the part too. The young ladies on the till and serving had excellent customer service skills, the older ladies in the kitchen didn't look happy. We will definitely be back and nothing was a problem. You must visit.

Played today, Mon 26th August, Great layout, but sadly the greens are diseased and awful, and the tee boxes are terrible, very expensive bar, and no food being served, even though there was a competition on, and the bar was busy, Sadly one to miss in the future.

We visited Hexham yesterday and found this café in the Market Place, after a lovely River Tyne walk. It was quite busy at 1pm but we didn't have to wait long for our table. The girls made us feel very welcome and worked so hard while we were there clearing tables and getting everyone seated as soon as possible. My husband had a bacon sarnie and I had a ham and mushroom omelette which was so light and fluffy, delicious. Coffees were great too. Plenty of choice on the menu and great prices. Doggy friendly too with a treat for pooch 🐾

What a welcoming, hospitable place. If you ever need cheering up, this is the place to go. We were made welcome immediately, and tony the owner had us in stiches from the start. Everyone there were so friendly, and what had started as an intended short visit, led to us staying to closing. Met some brilliant characters, who all just made our day. Dog friendly too, which was an added bonus to us. Can't recommend enough.
