Vindolanda Cafe in Northumberland

Stopped off here for a spot of lunch and really pleased to see pie, mushy peas and gravy on the menu. It was delicious! Lots of choice on offer (both hot and cold food) and to someone who is used to getting ripped off in attractions like this it was very reasonably priced. They could charge more as there is no other option while visiting Vindolanda but it’s good to see they keep the prices sensible (thank you!) After the pies, we also sampled some cakes (when in Rome and all that!) and they were also very tasty.

Very nice cafe with a range of food and drink. Not huge inside (outside seating in better weather), so worth beating the rush and getting there ahead of any tours! We got there at midday and there were no problems. Very nice homemade soup and cakes to go with the coffee, all very reasonably priced.

Small, cozy museum café with really fair prices.

Not impressed with the coffee - it was from a push-a-button machine, and tasted fairly ordinary. The only non-dairy milk option was packets of soya. The cake was okay, but tasted a day or two old (starting to go stale). The hot food and sandwiches may have been better, but we didn’t have those.

Good value for money. Food was lovely. This is just what was needed - nothing like this on my last visit. Eat in or out

Nice museum café in a nice area with fast service

It is an OK restaurant, but the food is not very special, the coffee tastes too English and we had to wait a long time, because the service and efficiency of the staff is also very English (slow). Nevertheless, it is the only café on the premises, and it is ok

Really nice cafe at the bottom of the hill {Steep hill} can recommend the attached museum and if dining try the hot pies and the cakes Good value for money too ….cheaper than less well kept cafes I’ve come across

We only had a snack and coffee but judging by the other people who were eating there the food was going down well. Good prices as well

A beautiful cafe at Vindolanda. Delicious food, reasonably priced, and the inside and outside of the cafe are beautiful.

Reasonable choice of meals and snacks, not fantastic value, don't rely on for main meal of the day. Clean and tidy, staff friendly and efficient.

This little cafe is sited in the museum building at the far end of the site from the main entrance so a great place to refresh before looking at the museum. It serves simple food nicely but can get a bit crowded when it is busy and the weather is not good enough to sit on the terrace.

A good and reasonasbly priced cafe with a nice selection of dishes. Outdoor seating if the weather is fine adds to the ambience.

Excellent lunch of sandwiches, salad and cake. Good value and lovely places to sit outside with sunshades. Very pleasant area near the Museum.

Lovely to have such a nice place, friendly staff etc, but not quite big enough for the numbers of visitors. Service a little slow, and so items had run out when we finally got to head of the queue.

The cafe is a bit small and was packed when we first got there because it was raining outside (the cafe has outside seating which, obviously, wasn't in use when we visited). If we were to visit again we would probably make sure that we got there a bit earlier to get a choice of table. We just had soup and a roll which was very tasty and enjoyable.

A good range of food on offer to suit all the family. Very reasonably priced. Quick and friendly service. We sat outside in the sun and enjoyed the gardens. We even heard an owl in the woods, at lunchtime!

Great food beautiful surroundings so relaxing sitting outside was the best with large sun canopy’s overlooking the babbling brook and enjoying the birdsong.

The restaurant/cafe is located in the valley at the bottom of the Vindolanda site. There is some inside seating but plenty more outside over several terraces. Its cafeteria style, where you order and pay before you receive your food/drink. A good selection of sandwiches, paninis,...

Out for a hike and passed here. Asked to use the cafe but told no we had to pay £8.95 to visit the museum to access it. Asked if there was toilet facilities I could use but again told no unless I paid for the...

Lovely to have some different food options. Sausage and onion panini was very tasty. Friendly staff too.

Visited after walking museum and the site. Enjoyed a de-caff tea, my friend had tea with lactose free milk (soya) and we shared a slice of delicious ginger cake. Good value

The entry for the cafe at Vindolanda did not state or make clear that you have to purchase an entry ticket to use the cafe. As I had visited the museum before I only wanted a coffee which I obtained at the cafe at Housesteads...

Canny cafe inside Vindolanda itself. Visited with friends. The carrot and coriander soup with sun-dried tomato bread was fresh and homemade. Reasonable prices and nice staff.

Outstanding, simple cafe within the museum. Why? Because I've never had such a good pannini before, and while I was skeptical of the size at first, it did indeed do the trick. Nice atmosphere as well, and both indoor and outdoor seating

We had a panini and salad and muffin to follow which was all nice and fresh. It was the filter coffee that wowed me. It was the best coffee I have ever tasted. Unfortunately I forgot to ask what it was and where I could...

We stopped for lunch here and it was nice if a bit expensive, but £2.50 for a bottle of Ginger Beer is just ridiculous.

Great location and the food was very good. It is down the bottom of a big hill .... but if you are not as mobile as you once were ! there were cars down there ... so guessing you can probably drive down there, and...

The cafe & museum are set out in the valley below Vindolanda. Very pleasant setting amongst the trees.

Cafe is in a beautiful location and serves good, reasonably priced food, ideal if visiting Vindolanda - soup, sandwiches, pies, paninis...... It is down a bit of a hill from the main Vindolanda site though.

Food was really good. The shop is good too. I got some lovely silver sycamore gap tree earrings. Rather nice.

We had a mixed experience , somke parts of the food were nice others not so much. Having said that it was a welcome stop on wet and windy day to warm up

Used this cafe on a very rainy visit to Vibdolanda. It was ok, soup was very good but served in a paper cup, coffee was ok but the rhubarb and custard cake was dry and tastless. Staff were nice though and the location is good.

Do not have the coffee, it is awful, l made the mistake of ordering a filter coffee, it tasted worse than most instant coffee l have tasted. My wife had a capprachino and that was awful as well.

The COVID19 is causing some issues here. I did not feel safe eating here. Slimmed down menu and seating inside and out, but tables are not wiped down after guests sit on them. They appear short-staffed. I didn't feel safe eating here and hope I have not got the COVID19 from here. It's a pity because the food (I had the cheese pie and a slice of cake) tasted nice.

A wonderfully laid out and atmospheric cafe, nice staff and good choice of eats, Children well catered for too.

At the end of walk round the site we came upon this haven tucked away by the stream.A fairly steep descent to the cafe but a sturdy handrail helped us down and then up steps into the premises. a lovely selection of soup, sandwiches and delicious cakes accompanied by a hot beverage warmed us up ready for our return back up, or a fit companion can sprint up to the carpark, and travel down a lane to collect the less able of the party. Abutting the cafe are loos, shopping and the museum. The charming staff are quite happy for you to wait any where in the vicinity for your lift.

We spent much longer at Vindolanda than we expected, so the cafe was a pleasant surprise. They had a good selection of light bites and more substantial fare, along with a bunch of stuff for little kids. Prices were reasonable, the staff were very friendly and helpful.

When visiting Vindolanda one gets a bit peckish and thoughts turn to a nice cup of tea or coffee and a sandwich or cake. This place doesn't fail to supply very tasty well made sandwiches and luscious moist cakes. Very welcoming when you have been roaming around the suite for a while. It is at the bottom of a dell, very picturesque but quite steep to reach if you have dodgy knees so watch your step and take it slowly. Beautiful views and a relaxing, historic place with a reconstruction of a Roman Temple no less so a lovely place to while away an hour before continuing your tour of the rest of Vindolanda.

I use this cafe a lot when visiting with tourists. Always excellent, clean and friendly staff,very clean

Popped in for scone and coffee during a visit to the Vindolanda site (which is brilliant). The cafe feels quite quaint and atmospheric. Service was very pleasant and reasonably quick. The coffee was unexpectedly good, as it was from a machine (push button, no fancy barista work), but the "cheese" scone was the worst scone I've ever eaten. There was no evidence of cheese, it was dough flavoured but crumbled when you tried to butter. It was not homemade and was the nastiest, cheapest of scones. At £1.80 it was expensive for a factory made scone. We'd have asked for a refund but we're hungry and didn't really want to drink our coffee feeling awkward. I'd go back for coffee but definitely not eat there.

We only had tea and scones but they were both excellent. May be quite challenging for some disabled people to access due to steep slope but definitely worth it if you can get there.

There was a fairly long queue when we arrived at 12.30. This took ages to move as service seemed incredibly slow. Combination of rolls already filled and jackets/baguettes which were made up to order with salad as an option. All very average.

Good selection of food and drinks at reasonable prices. Has wheel chair access, but the paths are good but steep in places.

The cafe has a nice atmosphere and it was good to be able to have a drink and a bite to eat after visiting the site. The menu offers a good selection of cakes, sandwiches and light meals. Coming down to the cafe is easy but it is a bit of an uphill walk to get back to the site and car park. Could be difficult to access for people with walking difficulties.

Popped in for lunch whilst visiting the excavations and Roman Museum. Good choice of options cooked to order and well presented.

Reasonably priced refreshments considering it has a captive audience, quality food and drinks and in a lovely setting

We visited Vindolanda in the morning and decided to stay and have lunch in the cafe. We were pleasantly surprised by the variety if food and the quality. We had meat pies, and although they were different meats, they were both delicious. The patio outside was a lovely place to sit inthe warm weather while eating.

In the past I have found cafes at tourist attractions to be expensive and poor value, but was surprised by the one at Vindolanda. £ 7 for a coffee, pie and beans is good value and they didn't skimp on the portions. Also the mural of a Roman banquet on the wall adds to the atmosphere when you're eating, and the staff are friendly and service quick.

Just had a cuppa as we were going out for a meal that night. The cafe is situated in the most beautiful surroundings quite a lovely surprise when you walk down to it not what we expected at all. The museum and gift shop are right next door to the cafe so interesting and much more to see than you realise. Definately recommend a visit to Vindolanda and cafe.

The restaurant on site has a great selection of food—more than I expected—and the prices are great. I had a good sized ploughman’s platter on £5, with a slice of cake for about £2. They even had a section of gluten free pre-packaged foods.

We visited on a cold day so were glad to pop in for a warming bowl of soup, though there were lots of other tempting options available. The café is quite small so probably fills up quickly on busy days. Food and service excellent.

We had lunch on a visit to the site, very friendly, lovely homemade soup & locally sourced options and very reasonably priced. Would recommend!

My husband and I enjoyed lunch on the patio at the cafe after spending several hours at the fort. The cafe offered several choices for lunch. We preferred sitting outside on a nice day but the interior was a pleasant place, too.

Vindolanda is cold and tiring. Something warm and welcoming would have been appreciated. the choice was very limited. Suprising really as you have a captive audience.

We were cold & hungry by the time4 we arrived, but a bowl of good soup did the trick. Bit cramped but fine.

We had done the inside of the museum and had tea and scones before going outside. Great big pot of tea. We had cheese and fruit scones. Very enjoyable. Staff were friendly and couldn’t do enough for us.

It serves the historical site basically but there is a nice area to sit outside if it's nice. The recreations in the grounds are also worth spending time visiting. The cafe itself is the standard fayre that you find in cafes. You need a cafe here because it's easy to spend quite a lot time here, there's so much to take in and see.

Everyone was happy with the great choice of food. Vegetarian and vegans catered for with multiple options. Lovely decor as well. Helpful, friendly staff. You can sit outside if the weather is nice

Worth the walk down from the main site to the Cafe and Museum; It was very quiet the day we visited and pouring with rain so we were glad of setting the time aside to walk down to the cafe and museum (which was amazing). The staff were chatty and happy and the soup (tomato and basil from memory) really tasty.

After a lot of walking amongst the grounds and ruins of Vindolanda, the museum cafe was a welcoming place to sit and enjoy a well prepared light meal, scones and tea. The staff were lovely.

Our group had lunch here an assortment of pasties, pie, cake and drinks. Gluten free options available. Great service and excellent prices. Cafe is nicely decorated with Roman mural along the wall.

This is a fun place to visit because of its Roman theme. Spot the 'real' person in the frieze. Clue: he's wearing specs. For a small museum cafe, there is a good range and you can sit outside on the pretty terrace if the weather is fine. Rounds off a lovely and fascinating visit.

My wife and I took some time off from exploring the Roman fort and had a nice lunch stop at this café. It's not fancy and don't expect gourmet food but we felt they had a nice variety of choices and the food was well prepared. The prices are reasonable and the staff is friendly There is outside seating but we opted to be indoors.

A couple of miles off the Hadrians wall walk, Vindolanda is well worth the detour and the café is a welcome stop for walkers . Pleasant simple fare and friendly staff.

The cafe is attached to the museum, quite a long way from the car park. After a guided tour of Vindolanda in rain and cold wind hot drinks were definitely required and were found in the cafe after a bit of time in the queue. A huge variety of sandwiches, cakes and savouries were on display: would have been nice to have more guidance about vegetarian and gluten-free and maybe a menu detailing all the choices

We ate here after visiting the Roman fort and before going into the museum. It is cafeteria style with inside as well as outside seating. I has a ploughman’s lunch and my wife had the quiche with a green salad. Bottled water, hot tea and a bag of crisps came in around 14£’s.

Good food served well by pleasant & welcoming staff & so reasonable. Exceeded expectations.Very enjoyable in nice surroundings & so much history on doorstep.

A surprising place just down from the ruins, part of the shop, toilets etc with a great coffee shop done out in a roman way. Very nice to sit outside and look at and hear the sound of nature in a wonderful setting.

This cafe is at the bottom of the very large site at Vindolanda. It is in a beautiful setting with out door seating as well as in door. We had coffee and scones but it also did a variety of foods. It is housed with the Museum of Artefacts which is well worth a visit.

The Vindoland cafe is in the same building as the main Vindolanda Museum. It is clean, modern and serves a wide variety of good quality healthy snacks, sandwiches and main meals, all at reasonable prices. the staff are efficient rather than friendly. There is attractive seating both inside and outside. The outside seating is particularly inviting as it overlooks the stream separating the main indoor museum and the outdoor museum complex. There is a minumum £5 for credit card purchases, just slightly too much for two cappuccinos.

A fairly good lunch reasonable value for money. Lovely location and the good weather meant that we could eat outside in very pleasant surroundings.

The cafe is located at the bottom of the Vindolanda site next toteh museum. We went in for a drink and snack before continuing our journey. Comfortable seating, good service and clean toilets all added to the overall experience.

The cafe is in a beautiful little valley with running stream and very picturesque, but what an access. The walk down is incredibly steep and of course you have to get back up again. I actually walked up backwards, as it hurt my legs due to the steepness. Not really a restaurant but nice cafe with outside space, reasonable prices.

After a great walk round the site we had lunch in the eatery. More than a café but not a full blown restaurant. Food was fresh, tasty and reasonably priced. About £20 for 2 courses & drinks for 2.

We recently stayed in Greenhead for 3 weeks and after joining the Vindolanda Trust visited Vindolanda a number of times, each time dropping into their cafe. While not fine dining, the food on offer was of consistent quality and good value. The service was efficient and there was a good selection to choose from. Would recommend for lunch.

Popped in after visiting the Roman ruins and the excellent museum here. We happened upon this wee cafe and grabbed some drinks and savoury pastries. The sausage roll was delicious and peppery, the chicken and ham pie tasty lots of meat and piping hot. Friendly staff and lovely space outside to enjoy the sunshine and birdsong.

We visited the cafe when we were visiting Vindolanda, it has a good choice of food and drinks for both adults and children.

Just had coffee and a delicious hot chocolate which we took onto the terrace to drink. Lovely atmosphere and friendly staff. They had bird feeders up and a wide array of wild birds came very close to us including a nuthatch. Wonderful.

Stopped off at the cafe while on a tour of Vindolanda with family. Cold and wet outside, but hot drinks and warm snacks (scones and cream v. nice) boosted energy for the next leg. V. friendly staff.

As this is a museum cafe don't expect haute cuisine, but you will get basic fresh food and a nice cuppa. Staff were lovely.

Enjoyed cakes and tea. Good choice of menu, good value, nothing fancy. The satff were very helpful and would certianly visit again.
