What a lovely meal we had! Pleasant service. Delicious food. Great surroundings! Nothing not to like. The roast loin of cod and steak with all the trimmings were excellent. Will definitely go back!

I attended a great wine tasting evening. All the wines were from Italy. The food was superbly paired with each wine. There were five courses and each course had its own unique flavor and complemented each other. The service was excellent with friendly staff. I would certainly recommend Headlam Hall for any meal. It is a real treat to dine there

Sunday lunch. Beautiful food, perfectly presented, just a joy to eat here. Both roast dinners were brilliant. The beef and the pork. I had a huge side dish of cauliflower cheese which just seemed to disappear because it was delicious and creamy, and the whole meal couldn’t be faulted. Service was unobtrusive and the whole experience was relaxed and pleasant. House wine was adequate and a service charge was automatically added. A return visit is on the itinerary.

Sunday lunch - yesterday (08/10/23. It wasn't great! Vegetables were very hard... A couple of times i had to pick them up with my fingers, because if i had forced the knife.. they would had crossed the room. Only 1 Yorkshire pudding ☹️... Very minimum over all! There were other vegetables available, but you would have to pay extra for them... because they are classed as sides. Very expensive £19.50. Not worth the money! The serving staff were very lovely.

We booked a lunchtime meal at Headlam Hall today for my birthday because previously we have had very good experiences both for meals and the New Years Eve packages. I would not be writing this if either of the staff dealing with us had asked if we had enjoyed our meal or whether there were any problems-no-one did, hence the review. My partner was delighted with his starter-the salmon, but I was a bit disconcerted to find that a salad with goats cheese turned out to be a whole goats cheese with a garnish. My main problem was with my main course- belly pork with dauphinoise potatoes , cabbage and I think butternut squash. The reason I am unsure is because all but the pork was completely covered by a thick layer of very dark brown, glutinous `reduction`. It was the worst presentation of a meal I have come across in at least 30 years- more like a 1950`s school dinner. For many years now in hotels and restaurants we have been served meals with either gravy or a `reduction` being served in a separate container, with possibly some on the plate underneath the meat and vegetables-never smothered over everything. The offending `reduction`was also far too salty, and gave the impression it had been made with half a packet of gravy browning. Why did no one ask if there were any problems? Are Headlam Hall so complacent that they think there could not possibly be problems? Or are the serving staff-who were lovely-simply intimidated by the chef and unwilling to pass on complaints?

My wife and I like to eat at Headlam Hall every so often. The food is always of a high standard and the service is impeccable. On our lunch visit today we ordered the BBQ food. It was absolutely awesome, just like the food normally is at Headlam Hall. However, the pudding requested was chocholate moose with Raspberries. Yet when it turned up it was creme in colour. There was no sign of anything chocholate and it did not taste like a moose at all. The dish had red currents, one strawberry and one rasperry. We didn't complain, but were quite disappointed!

Yet another fantastic experience in this restaurant. We stayed at the hotel and had dinner and breakfast the two of us followed by lunch with an extra guest before checking out. The dinner menu was totally updated and exceeded both our expectations both in regard to quality and choice. The breakfast was superb as usual. The lunch was also a totally revamped menu and again beyond all of our expectations, including that of our guest who is a succesful restaurant owner! Oh, and not to forget the service throughout; efficient, friendly and customer focussed. Keep it up Headlam, you're on a winner both hotel, spa and restaurant wise. Cannot recommend you enough.

Firstly I’ll say the staff were pleasant enough…I mean couldn’t raise a smile pleasant but they weren’t rude to us unlike other reviews I’ve read elsewhere. Grounds and main hotel are beautiful but going by my own personal experience this is where they give up and just don’t try anymore… I’ll stick to the facts so the owners or management cannot attempt to discredit my opinion and experience. I paid for 3 adult afternoon teas at £24.95 each and one child at £12.95. What we got wouldn’t have been enough to feed a small dog. We each received 3 ‘fingers’ of sandwiches (which, because I checked!) was the width of one piece of bread…so in reality 2 slices of bread. One cheese scone each and 2 small pieces of cake. And that ladies and gents is your £25 worth!!! Imagine the child portions of the exact same and you can understand my annoyance. I’m sorry but I’m not a massive eater but it was simply a rip off plan as day…how any establishment can serve this up with a straight face and not be laughing as they serve it is one I will never set foot in again. Don’t even get me started on how one side of the sandwiches were crusty and hard (clearly sat out all day and not covered!) and the scone dryer than a sand shoe in a desert… Which all brings me to the ‘discretionary’ tip automatically added to the bill. This really annoys me when places do this…we are not America, your staff should be paid a comfortable living wage so your excuse that you ‘do it for the staff’ is codswallop…you do it because it’s another way of ripping people off. I’m more than happy to pay a tip if I’ve received good service. I think it’s only fair I get to decide what that is without embarrassment of having to explain this to your staff / management:. A real shame to be honest as it was a great family gathering and the surroundings are stunning, spa looked amazing and golf course great…I will not be back to sample any of them as I refuse to be treated like a mug. There are far more deserving places in the local area that understand you treat your customers well and they’ll return again and again. Hedlam Hall management hang your head in shame at the way you run your establishment…

We went for Sunday lunch and were looking forward to a meal befitting of the lovely hall and grounds of this hotel. Sadly, the service was poor and food lacklustre. Whilst the staff weren’t rude, they were slow and inattentive. We were seated and, in a restaurant that wasn’t busy, waited 15 minutes for a waiter to return and take a drinks order. That was the only drink we managed to get from staff that couldn’t wait to get away from our table. We were never asked if we needed anything, or even asked if everything was ok. For this privilege, a service charge was added to our bill. The food itself was not up to scratch. The bread was a basic roll that seemed to have been bought in; it’s surprising not to get a warmed bread roll at a country hotel (or a nice gastropub even). The starters were fine; the tempura prawns were large and well cooked, and the goats cheese salad was pleasant enough. The main course however was a big let down. The beef was dry, extremely well done, and really rather fatty. The vegetables were bland and just seemed to be boiled without any flavour or seasoning. The roast potatoes were soft without a hint of being crisped in the oven. The Yorkshire pudding was fine. The best part of the meal was the gravy which was good - and sadly necessary to take away the dryness and add some flavour. Considering how sweet a tooth we both have, we left without dessert to avoid further disappointment. This is such a shame as the venue itself is lovely, however, after this experience we’re not expecting to return.

A few little things were not so good for a place like Headlam Hall. The table was not good, two small tables pushed together with a gap in the middle and an uneven leg. I had to chase the waitress for the coffee after ordering it 20 mins beforehand. No sugar was provided and I had to chase that too. When it arrived it was white sugar not brown which is usually served with coffee.

We stayed at Headlam for a week with friends and so are almost everything from the menu. I was very happy with every dish I had. Most of the time we shared a dessert as the portions are quite large. The quality of ingredients is high and presentation is excellent. We tried a number of wines by the glass which were very nice quality and sensibly priced. They have a separate vegetarian menu which we also dipped into. One of our friends who is a strict vegetarian pointed out the lack of protein in the dishes and hopefully this will be taken on board. The restaurant is formal with attentive service though you can eat the same food in the more relaxed environment of the bar.

Family meal - first time visit. The grounds and look of the hall are very nice. Service in the bar beforehand was unfortunately not good - table service very slow with 3 people stood behind the bar and table not cleaned (not a good first impression). In the orangery there was no music playing?! Felt like we had to whisper - some music would have really improved the atmosphere. Service in the orangery was good. Enjoyed the food but it was nothing exceptional and quite expensive for what it was. Wouldn't have minded the cost so much had service and atmosphere been much better.

I read a review of the brasserie at Headlam Hall and I can’t believe the reviewer is writing about the place know. I have been waiting for a reply from management in defence of their staff but weeks have passed without a response from them. I can’t claim to be a regular as I only visit a few times a year when I’m in the area but I have always found the staff helpful and polite even when busy and under pressure. I admit the sandwiches are a bit of a let down, simply because the bread, although fresh is nothing special (management take note). The home made cakes are first class especially the lemon drizzle and Bakewell tarts, worth going out of your way for. I can’t recommend the place too highly. I have to admit I’m surprised the management have not responded to that review, they obviously don’t value their staff enough to back them up. Shame on you.

Whilst staying at the hotel we enjoyed three really nice evenings in the restaurant. We had a drink before dinner whilst perusing the menu and when it was ready, we was escorted through to our table. We had a five course meal every night! It is started with an amuse-bouche which was a different soup every night, then after your chosen starter you receive a sorbet, and again, this was a different flavour on each night. You then have your main course, and of course your dessert...all of which was very nice. The fish was exceptionally nice, I am told. Also, I must mention the cheese board - it is the best one I have had for a long while.

My wife and I stayed here for 10 days and whilst we ate out a number of times we had Sunday Lunch here one day, a formal dinner in the restaurant once and then both bar and restaurant dishes in the more cosy and comfortable bar on several occasions. I can honestly say that we were not disappointed in any of the numerous dishes we had. The highlights were probably the lamb with a separate lamb and kidney pudding, the Sunday lunch, the Ribeye Steak and the cheese platters but the Calypso coffee made by the bar manager was especially fantastic. We preferred the bar for food as it is more comfortable and they have real (gas) fires but you can have all the restaurant dishes there too. The wine selection is good value and the prices generally are reasonable for the setting and quality of food and service. There are a number of menus and you can pick and mix between them so it can get a little complicated.

They were well presented and flavoured with some fabulous fresh vegetables and fancy potatoes. The starters were very good too although my pulled lamb fritter tasted unseasoned. We shared a dessert which was lovely and a cheese course which was generous. The liquor coffee was particularly nice quality. We had a glass of NZ white each with our mains and a glass of house champagne to start. Both were very decent wines and not too pricey. I would have liked a special whiskey after such a nice meal but the selection is relatively small. The service was attentive and the amuse bouche and palate cleansers were a nice touch. Part of a 2 night package, although our second night we had booked to eat elsewhere. Food was excellent, well presented, cooked and flavoursome.King prawns were on the money along with the lamb. Cold fish starter was very good with a good selection of prawns, salmon, trout. Wine choice was extensive with reasonable prices. Menu was varied, although a vegetarian could possibly struggle. 4 star plus plus for the food and presentation. Although when asked for mint sauce or cranberry we were told they had none. Chef ! Really, doesn't take a few mins to make fresh mint sauce. Very good and would recommend.

Excellent meal with good service; properly cooked food (not bought in frozen that you often get at other establishments). Food was not too expensive for the type and quality. Overall a very good restaurant.

Having completed a walk around Gainford which took in the hotel and grounds of Headlam Hall we decided the menu was interesting and we duly booked dinner a few days later. The staff were helpful and attentive with a cheerful manner despite the place seeming to be full. The food was well presented and tasty. I thoroughly enjoyed my personal favourites - black pudding & bacon warm salad followed by rack of lamb. Perfect if you are very hungry!! The sea bass was very good. We enjoyed the ambience and the food so it's likely we will pop out there again and likely stay the night too.

This was a weekday lunch using a gift voucher given as a golden wedding present.Opted for the 2-course lunch, mains and sweet. Both the chicken and fish were very enjoyable, and the sticky toffee pudding met expectation. Staff very attentive. At £39, it's expensive for everyday lunch, but nice place for a treat.

Headlam Hall is in the Teesdale countryside between Darlington and Gainford and surrounded by rolling farmland. Accompanied by a friend we spontaneously arrived for lunch on Sunday 30th April and were greeted by friendly and attentive waitress. Headlam caters for vegetarian and meat eaters offering reasonable priced choices and dishes are served attractively and at an affordable cost and a very relaxed atmosphere. Headlam is the perfect setting for a special occasion or just a 'pop in'

It is most disappointing when an establishment that one has often frequented and which has provided good food and service in the past seems to have entered the sliding slopes to inadequacy. Such was our experience at the Headlam Hall restaurant where without any doubt I and our party of 9 experienced quite the worst lunch ever eaten.A supposed chicken parfait crumbled when attacked with a knife, was odourless, unseasoned and utterly bland. Roast of the day was said to be lamb but the two slices presented were so tough as to be virtually inedible and were stone cold as were the plates which conveyed Add to dictionary the rhubarb crumble tasted rancid. All in all a most unpleasant experience and one which certainly cannot be recommended. Perhaps the over concentration on weddings and large parties explains the reduction in quality in a restaurant which used to have a lofty reputation. So sad!

I was here to a wedding and it was very good. I felt the attention to details was good and the food very good. The only criticism I have is why the sound man who belonged to the hotel did not advise the band to use the hotel's speakers? They were infinitely better.

Four of us had dinner at Headlam. The ambiance is excellent with a very pleasant room for pre dinner drinks with a log fire. The orangery dinning room is also very attractive. The food was attractively presented. The staff were efficient and friendly although in a couple of instances a little training is required on correct serving procedures. There was no rush or hurry for us to leave once the meal was completed. In summary a very pleasant evening.

Both my partner & I have been trying for a few weeks to reserve a table at Headlam Hall for Sunday lunch, on the 13th February we finally manged to do so; we wish we hadn't bothered!I ordered a smoked salmon starter & my partner ordered the garlic mushrooms, even though they were tasty & the quanity was adequate, I found the presentation of both dishes very basic i.e. my smoked salmon was accomanied by a couple of pea spouts, which left my starter looking very uninteresting! My partners garlic mushrooms were also the same-a bowl of garlic muchrooms sitting in a minimal pool of garlic of 'creamysauce' & no frills. As for the main course, I had the pork which was warm & tastless & my partner had the pan fried breast of chicken which was dry & tastless-although this time both main courses were well presented. The side dish of mixed veg was OK, though my plated roast potatoes & parsips were annemic! For dessert my partner had the sticky toffee pudding which was also OK.We love Headlam Hall & have been visiting this establishment on & for numerous occassions over the past 30+ years. This was our first Sunday lunch here for a few years & I have to say we were very dissapointed.'Pound for pound' a far superior Sunday lunch can be found in the locality, though you won't experience the splender of Headlam Hall itself.Try it for yourself & see...

Came here during an over night spa stay.....food was absolutely fabulous here. 5 courses. The portions are not massive if that's what you like but it's the type of place where you dress smart, you're served well and you sit and enjoy the food slowly with great wine etc. There's also a very nice 17th century lounge with a fire etc which one retires to afterwards for a drink. Very nice.

We were put in a side room, they're were 9 of us, felt like we were pushed out of the way, service was terrible three dishes arrived on lukewarm plates, then 3 minutes later the rest of our main meals arrived along with lukewarm veg ( turnip, carrots, and cauliflower) in a bowl which wasn't drained probably, water left in bowl, then we got three Lamb instead of three beef, also we waited a while in between starters and main course, staff weren't very friendly, except the lady behind the bar she was very welcoming, we paid alot for what we got, we were given discount after complaining, it was such a shame as the surroundings were loverly, but wouldn't go back.

Stayed in Room 4 for an evening whilst in the area. Great find, room was spotless and very comfy. Bed (king size in this room) was also fantastic. Had evening meal with friends and this was great - chips to die for! Very reasonably priced. Yes, it (the room) was maybe laid out strangely but that didn't distract imo. All about the food and service which both first class. Pay the extra for the breakfast - you won't be disappointed! Lots of choice.
