Great place where we stayed for 2 nights and we were welcomed so amazingly well by the locals and particularly the staff (aka the self named gobsh*te). The pub has had its challenged and went bust about 10 years ago so it's a work in progress in case you wanted something g special. But they are honest that they need to improve. Food was amazing, rooms tired (which Simon the owner accepts). My only observation is the rooms are not cleaned very well. But that's an easy fix. If you fancy turning up and spending a long evening chatting with the locals about anything you want then this is the place.

Unfortunately not a great stay at all - it looks grotty from the outside and it’s not much better on the inside - rooms desperately in need of some TLC - the smell in the hallway was dreadful, we stayed two nights and the 1st night the food was ok again unfortunately the 2nd night it was disgusting and had to be sent back. The owner (Simon) said he was getting the place updated but it certainly needs closing and absolutely gutting - we certainly won’t be staying again

Omg, we neary. didn't get out of the car, kerb appeal...zero. Dark and dismal pub however. A friendly welcome and our bags carried up to The Room !!. The Room was cold, dusty, no bedside tables, 1 lamp, thin curtains, thin bedding and pillows, but looked clean, dirty oil filled radiator in the wardrobe, no hairdyer. Weird dry 'plant' .Bathroom cold, thin towels, no bath mat, no hot water to shower, no inner bin in bathroom bin, wallpaper around shower/bath...no tiles !! Obviously pub not been 'touched' since liquidation in 2014. Staff asked what time we would like breakfast which was a nice touch.Breakfast limited with a few cereals , juice on a table, but hot breakfast delicious and served by friendly lady who provided fruit/ yougurt and croissants on 2nd morning. Owner's son knocked on Room door night before check out to ask for Payment of breakfast[ not even had the breakfast]. On check out Kevin apologised for knocking on our door, but when I kindly said we hadn't even had the breakfast and all monies are settled on check out. We found his attidude and reply very insulting as he made it clear we wouldn't be welcome back

We stayed over for 2 nights last weekend and based on the cost weren’t expecting too much to be honest, we just wanted a cheap and cheerful break. What we did get was a very enjoyable stay, the accommodation was more than adequate, the food outstanding, both in quality and value. The staff can’t do enough for you. I would confidently recommend The Mary Inn to anyone wanting a good value break. It’s conveniently placed for Durham and particularly if you want to visit the Beamish Living Museum which is just down the road. Many thanks to Simon, Sam and staff.

Simon and his staff are so friendly, attentive and good at their jobs. The location is ideal for visiting Beamish. The number 8 Sunderland bus takes you to the museum in 5 minutes and the stop is opposite the inn. I had just started the Slimming World programme and Debra got me some Weetabix and Simon cooked me fat free egg, mushrooms, vine tomatoes and delicious wholemeal toast. The evening meals were delicious. I had a Chinese style vegetable curry and attractively presented side salad which was tasty. The other night I had grilled chicken with carrots, cabbage, swede and garden peas. The price of the food and the accomodation gave value for money, my husband enjoyed the ales and the bed was comfortable, the two windows could be opened wide in the room as it was a hot couple of days and at breakfast you could have as much tea, coffee and fruit juice as you liked. We will definitely come and stay here again .

About five minutes drive from the excellent Beamish Museum, this is an equally excellent pub; traditional, unspoilt and down to earth, it could almost be part of the museum, but this is a real genuine pub, no museum exhibit. Yes, it's a bit rough around the edges, but all the better for being so. There are two separate bars, a lounge and public bar, each with its own distinctive character. The fantastic selection of about eight ales on offer are all from small local independent breweries. Food, from a changing blackboard menu is excellent too, and very good value. I thoroughly enjoyed the pan fried salmon fillet (£8.95), served with asparagus, a choice of potatoes (very good chips for me) and a salad accompanyment. Staff are particularly friendly here.

Stayed here two nights while visiting Beamish Museum and friends. Arrived around 3pm in the afternoon and within a few minutes had our key and was taken up to our room. We had room No1 which is a end room upstairs on the back corner of the pub. The room was quite large, having tea/coffee making facilities, two double beds a wardrobe and more than enough draw space. In addition there was a 32" TV with all the free to view channels and a hair dryer provided. The bathroom had a decent sized shower, nice fluffy towels and toiletries were also supplied. Room was clean, light and pleasantly decorated. Found the bed a little on the soft side for my liking but still got a decent nights sleep. The downstairs public bars as well as being dark are in much need of refurbishment. However bar staff and locals were very friendly and made us feel welcome. A decent breakfast was served up as part of our B&B package. If you are looking for an evening meal there is a good variety of reasonably priced food on the Beamish Mary Ann menu. The Mary Ann also have a decent variety of good quality ales (£3 a pint). If you are visiting the Beamish Museum this is an ideal place to stay. as there is a bus stop directly outside the inn and the bus takes you directly into the museum grounds (No8 bus). For those of you that like walking then the museum is just under one mile from the Mary Ann. Would definetly stay here again.

I complained to the chef? and he offered to add more water to the mushy peas! Couldn't eat any of it. So whole plateful was returned. We still had to pay for it! We will not be going back which is a shame because on previous visits the food was excellent. So can only think there is a new chef? working there now.

A bit of a surprise when we first walked in as the photos are very complementary and we actually thought we had gone into the wrong place.
