Called in to the Zetland Hotel for a pint while sheltering from the rain whilst visiting Marske-by-the-sea. If you have ever watched one of those films when they enter a bar full of locals who make it clear that outsiders are not welcome then the Zetland have it covered. When I asked if they were dog friendly I was told as long as I stay off the carpets. Never felt so unwelcome, ignore by the staff and customers alike. Lots of great bars in Marske, just avoid this one.

Had Sunday lunch here today, food was excellent as was the service, nothing was too much trouble for the staff

Sunday lunch of 3 different meats, 4 if you wanted to pay £2 extra for lamb, I didnt have the lamb (not a fan) but the other 3 were all cooked well, not chewy. All the veg, which there was plenty of all hot and cooked perfectly. The mash was perfect for me unlike some other local places that do Sunday lunches. desserts were all a good size and well appreciated by the kids. Overall a very good Sunday lunch for 8 Well done all at The Zetland or as locals call it The Top House.

We are holidaying up in Marske by the sea and saw the reviews for the Zealand and decided to try it out. It was Easter Sunday but we asked if they could accommodate us for a meal . We were told they were busy but if we wouldn’t mind waiting forty minutes then there would be a table available . We didn’t wait that long before we were called through . It was a fabulous Sunday lunch , there was a good choice of meats , the vegetables and accompaniments were piping hot and well cooked . We thoroughly enjoyed our meal , the staff were very friendly and attentive .

Was enjoying my night in the locally known ‘Top house’ after my delicious parmo and pint of carling. Ended up speaking to some Chinese bloke named ‘pea head’ with a bruise on his wrist and he decided to wear a cast he then proceeded to tell me some of the cases he has been charged with and as an animal lover myself I really didn’t appreciate it to hear what he had done to some of these labradors. This is not the pubs fault and thoroughly enjoyed my time here.

Been a few times now for Sunday lunch with family and have to say the food and service is excellent. Home made food hot and plenty of it. The girls there always helpful and cheerful. Going back this Saturday for the Christmas menu.

Went in for a beer then returned for a meal and couldn't have found a more friendly place .We stayed in the bar area because we had the dog but they also have a restaurant. Not the very smartest of places but very friendly and welcoming Would go there again

Stayed here last minute due to a family crisis. Room was spotless and had everything we needed, the whole pub dealt with the Covid situation exceptionally and we felt very safe. The landlady was amazing and could not do more for you and went out of here way to help us in anyway she could. I would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Booked Christmas Dinner here, the service was second to none. There was no waiting between courses, everything went like clockwork. The menu was a selection of meats with trimmings, with of course a starter and deserts. The staff were so friendly and polite a big thank you to all of them. Needlesly to say booking again for next year.

This review is for the hotel side of this business, we never ate here so cant comment on the food. On arrival we had a very easy going check in, which was really nice and all the staff we did meet seemed really friendly. The room we stayed in was big with a lovely big bed with fresh white lining on. The bed was very comfortable. We had fresh white towels in the room and they were really big towels too. The room however was very tired, in need of some serious TLC. The shower was one of the worst I have ever had. To me this really did disappoint me, we are not the type to complain so settled on having a bath instead. It was only a weekend break, but If we were staying longer I would have had to say something. Tea and coffee facilities in the room were very basic, and we had to plug the kettle into an extention lead that was draped across the display fire place in order to reach the kettle on the dressing table. Nice friendly pub, in a quite location but The room needed a serious update and a really good clean. For £60 a night- out of peak season, I was disappointed.

We have stayed in Marske twice now and eaten at the Zetland 3 times with no Dissapointments. Really friendly staff, but this is a friendly village. the 1st evening we were waited on by Emily and Jaz and the food and service were excellent, but the chef went on holiday that night after our meal. the second night we were served by Melissa who could not do enough for us lovely girl, bearig in mind the chef was on holiday they had an ex chef standing in, but again the food was excellent.

Sunday lunch was very good and tasty service excellent, only fault I had was that some of the serving staff did not have their hair tied back which looked unhygienic.

The quality of the food here is generally good. Sunday roast lunches are reliably pleasant, with a variety of vegetables to accompany the roast meats.

Myself and a friend came up for a one night at the Zetland Hotel, one large room with a single and double bed cost £50 with the breakfast extra. The room was extremely clean and spacious and ideal for a short stay. The breakfast was great and Jackie the landlady was always available if we needed anything. Thanks for a great stay !

If you want to eat your meal in a cold bland room which reminded me of a dinning room of a nursing home than this is the place to go food not much better

19 of us came for the Christmas meal. Food was absolutely amazing. Food came out pipping hot, veg and meat was cooked to perfection. Everything went fabulous staff were great. Thank you very much. Bickerstaff Family

Disappointed with our 3rd Sunday lunch despite the first 2 being excellent.

Well where to start...Trev and his team were absolutely amazing, we dined Saturday before hitting the local bars and again for Sunday lunch and both times the food was really good, we had a vegetarian in our party and she was easily catered for. The rooms are extremely clean and of a really generous size and well equipped with everything you need to enjoy your stay. Can’t wait to return

Always friendly and welcoming. Hotel rooms need a bit of updating but bar is always lively and friendly. Food is standard pub grub but does the job.

Second visit for sunday lunch. Best book in advance. First visit ordered one small and one large dinner. The small requested all meats mine 2 meats. Shared veg so I payed more for the least food. My partner got more than I on a small plate. Service very very slow although they book on sittings. Had to ask for extra gravy and took a while to come. Food was red hot and tasty. Would never order a large again as same food for £2 more. Would give more stars if service eas quicker. Went again today alone at 1.15pm bar packed. So asked if i could get table in dining room as not booked. Room completely empty and told NO? they were waiting for next sitting. All staff in kitchen standing around and they turned me away? Ludicrous.

Visited with my daughter and son in law for drinks. A very friendly and welcoming place. I was most impressed when the barman pulled up a young drinker for his language and told him to please respect the residents. Drinks are well kept and prices are very reasonable. An enjoyable evening.

ordered two chicken parmesans, the breadcrumbs burnt to a crisp, flat beaten down chicken with a over cooked texture, also extra toppings for 50p each did not blend well with the cheap tasting béchamel sauce and rubber cheese, and asif the foul taste in my mouth wasnt enough, we were not approached on how the meal was won’t be coming back anytime soon.

Lunchtime visit with friends, good service, good food, nice atmosphere. There were about 25 people who arrived together with a short window to eat and drink so the need for good quick service was essential and was delivered.

Watched a match here this week as I often do. Its a good pub with a good atmosphere and they keep a great pint. First time I had eat here for a while and it was very good, nice meal at a good price.

Have eaten at this hotel on numerous occasions and every time have been very happy with the service, food taste and amount. Suggest you have the main course before ordering the sweet.!!!

This is the second time I've been for Sunday lunch and was as good if not better than I'd remembered the first time. I would go as far as to say the best in the area. Lovely lean melt in your mouth beef, homemade Yorkshire pudding and really tasty potatoes, veg and gravy. All served in a relaxed atmosphere. We will definitely be going again and would recommend.

1st time we had been into the Zetland. It was recommended to me by a local taxi driver who eats here regular. We were not disapointed. A friendly welcome at the door, an got seated in the restaurant area, which is nice but could do with a few warm colours to brighten it up. Opted for starters as well, pate was lovely but chutney would of topped it off. The parmo we ordered was a pork one not chicken, my 1st time trying one and definately won't be my last. Absolutely gorgeous an homemade chips topped it off. Would prefer seperate bowls of chips though instead of sharing a large bowl as my sister's quite greedy :-). Some how made room for dessert which finished us off. I would highly recommend this place if your in the area, friendly, welcoming and fantastic food. Can't wait to go back.

WE booked for a 70th birthday party food staff and atmosphere excellent Jackie could not do enough for us.

Anyway, we had a delightful meal and lovely beers on a Sunday night in March. The ladies had pork loin which the said was delicious, I had a lamb shank which was lovely. We eat in the bar which was a nice change. The service staff were excellent and very helpful. We will be back very soon.

Say no more, luke warm carling (over-priced) on draft and a fruit machine! Everything you could wish for under one roof. Were harrased hopwever by a fat lad called luke nic i believe, kept telling us he was the manager of the pub team, we were later informed by one of the locals he had recently been charged for interfering with dogs!! This made our stay most uncomfortable even though the pub itself is excellent, will be tabbing up elsewhere in future.

Landlord Trevor has done wonders with this place, great pub, great atmosphere and great food!! Best barmaid in England works here! In Ireland being a bar person is a trade and your 'average' bar person can serve up to 6 people at once....this young lady...

Although we were the only people in the restaurant we had a lovely evening, food was very good and excellent value. The waitress was very attentive and pleasant. Couldn't ask for more.

Excelente hospitalidad, idealmente situado si viajas a marske en tren, estado aquí unas cuantas veces con los seguidores de fútbol de north shields, los anfitriones son siempre cálido y acogedor.

Nos reservamos a última hora para el día de la Madre Almuerzo debido a que tener un hombro congelado y no deseen cocinar para mi madre maravillosa en la ley. Nada era un problema que ellos una mesa reservada en el bar. La comida era fresca y pipping caliente, todo el personal era cortés y muy servicial. Suegra incluso conseguimos un postre gratis para celebrar su día! ! Sin duda reservaremos de nuevo, bien hecho y gracias que hizo su día y la nuestra también! !

Comer aquí regularmente. Domingo almuerzos para morirse. Carne fresca y verduras recién cocinado. Servicio de sonriente amable. A un precio razonable. Reserva esencial. Ruedas/discapacidad amable. Yo estaba tan impresionado que reservé un grupo de 40 personas para el almuerzo - * comida en diciembre y todo el mundo me felicitó por escoger este lugar. Excelente relación calidad-precio. Recomiendo encarecidamente este restaurante! !

Saturday teatime a couple of months back ... couple of pints and a bar meal, beer was nice unfortunately that couldn't be said for the food ... not sure if the kitchen part had been taken over but no excuse for a crap meal ... worse part was we weren't the only ones complaining and staff didn't really want to know ... just awful

Friendly staff, a little loud but with affordable prices. Warm and nicely decorated. Near the train station of Marske and two supermarkets. Special area for smokers with chairs and tables.

Visited recently for a family meal, and was very disappointed. The rump steak I was served wasn't rump, it was so thin, how that ever made it out of the kitchen I'll never know. More like a minute steak. The chicken in the Parmesan was about 3mm thick, and swimming in bechamel. Onion rings burnt so there was no moisture left in them and the dining room was cold...however the young lady serving us was as attentive and friendly as always, and they have a great toffee crunch pie (not made on the premises) Shame, as we've been here regularly over the last couple of years, and it's always been great. We didn't complain as we had family visiting from the south coast for the evening that we rarely see, but we won't be going back in a hurry.

Sunday family lunch for 6. Lovely roast lunch plus yummy desserts. All served very quickly with a smile and, as usual very good value for money.

Called at the Zetland for a drink after returning from Saltburn on the train. We had our 2 dogs with us and were immediately offered water for them and the use of the pub dog bed to put in front of the lovely open fire. Although we didn't eat here we could hear people talking about how good the food is. Will revisit when we return to the area and try their food.

Booked a table of 4 for 1.30 today. All had a Sunday dinner each and opted for a sweet each too. The dinner was a choice of been, pork, turkey and lamb for an extra £1. My husband and I had lamb and I had beef too.Our in-laws had beef each, we asked for Extra roasties as I am not a fan of mash potatoes. The meat and Yorkshire pudding were brough out on plates and the potatoes and vegetables were brought in dishes separately. We liked this idea to help ourselves. Really there was no need to ask for extra potatoes as there was quite a lot given anyways. A nice touch was roasted parsnips which you don't see often when out for Sunday lunch. They were nice, found have done with a little longer to crisp but that just our preference. Meat was beautiful, melted in the mouth, lovely homemade Yorkshire's. And veg was cooked perfect not over and soggy.Came very quickly which was great as we had walked from redcar and worked up an appetite.Compliments around the table for the mash too, said it was creamy and not lumpy. Desserts we ordered 3 toffee crunch pies - not actually pie, more like a cheesecake, which had I known I'd not ordered custard with it. Maybe toffee crunch slice would be a better name - however it was lovely, minus the custard.And one chocolate fudge cake which looked devine, and tasted beautiful! Was massively impressed with this place for food, after being recommended it by a someone in the pub the week before and by a friend. Will 100% come back. Top marks on beautiful food and also really good service. The young girl who served us was absolutely lovely really helpful and so friendly. Made us feel very welcome and couldn't do enough.

We stayed at the hotel for a night, longer wouldn't have been bearable. We booked and payed through a travel agency and the first encounter we had with the owner, was that we had to call the agency regarding the paymen. In my opinion this is between the hotel and the agency...The room: Big, but, the sheets were dirty (but were replaced after we asked), the floor was dirty, we even found nail clippings. There were two seats in the room which were damaged, the solution to part of the problem was to put pillowcases over them which looked really shabby.The TV didn't work, again after some hassling, a guy came up and fixed it. Tea and coffee making facilities, the teapot was dirty inside, the table was dirty, the cups were dirty and the kettle had to be placed on the ground.When we went to bed, the bedside lamp didn't work. We looked inside it and saw dust and all other kinds of filthy stuff.The badroom didn't have a shower in it and there was toilet-paper on the floor.Breakfast could be taken at whatever time we wanted, but 8 wasn't possible. We decided on 8.30 and got it at 9. There was no breakfast bar.The staff was friendly. What the Zetland missed was an eye for detail and general management.We will not be staying there again!

We stayed here on Saturday night and as the title says we basically had a bed in a room, an unclean room at that. The room obviously had not been cleaned for a while, there was dust on the bed headboard and windowsills, the toilet had not been cleaned inside or out. Old Philips CRT TV in the corner, dust on top of the uht milk cartons, loose teabags on the tea tray (how long have these 2 items been there?).Upon checkout we were not asked how our stay was or if we enjoyed our stay, no polite opportunity to mention the issues we had with the room, we just paid our money and left.We were charged £65 for the room for one night, this room in this state of cleanliness is not worth any more than £30 per night. It appears that the while the Zetland are happy to take your money for the room very little effort is put into the hotel side of the business.On a positive the towels in the room were clean, fluffy and appeared relatively new and the bed was comfy.

Beautiful Sunday lunches. £8.99 for two courses. Brilliant value for money. The turkey & beef were very tender & the strawberry meringue was lovely. They also have very friendly staff. Would definitely recommend.

Went on Sunday for dinner as a party of twelve . Very nice pub area , staff nice and friendly and dining area nice clean and cool in the heat we have had lately. Food very nice and cooked well , would definately go again.

As you walk in the main entrance the bar is to the right and dining hall to the left I turned up for Sunday lunch without a reservation and they managed to squeeze us in. Dining area has a wooden floor so quiet noisey with footsteps of the waitresses. Food was brought quickly a choice of 2 meats were offered. There is an offer for 3 courses on a set menu but I only had the dinner which was fulfilling and tasty. I will return again. The only down fall is the parking there are minimal parking spaces but you can park in the opposite Street.

Beautiful Sunday dinners couldn't recommend enough, not sure on other meals but not really herd a bad second had review on there food. The management have totally reinvented the premises and it's not only a nice place for food but a good pub for a quiet drink with friends

We went to the zetland hotel for Sunday lunch as we had just moved to the area.food was really nice and staff very friendly and efficient. We booked straight away for the next week reccommended

We stayed at this hotel for one night, we found the structure not very good but the staff really nice. I discovered the en-suite shower didn't work so had to go down the hallway to a shared one, and there was a mysterious smell of cigarette smoke exclusively in the en-suite at 7 am, which could not be explained. This is fine for staying after a party, not good for family. The restaurant had reasonably good food for the price and there are a few good beers at the bar.Overall this is a place that does rooms as an additional bit of income over the restaurant/pub business and there is clearly little investment in the hotel part. The great positive is the staff were lovely as most people in the town and, frankly, if you want to stay in town there are not many alternatives.

Have eaten here a few times in the past few months. Every time is as good as the first time. Excellent value for money. Great atmosphere in the dining room, with background music playing in the background whilst you enjoy your meal. Food is served hot and plenty of it too. Delicious and varied choice of courses. We were served by Jade last weekend. She was very friendly and polite. Service with a smile during each course was exceptional. Absolutely first class Sunday lunch ,superb food ,service faultless ,very good value for money in a lovely restaurant ,can't ask for more really ,a big thank you to all for accommodating our party as a last minute booking so late into Sunday afternoon .

Sunday dinner for 2 was a treat. Very good value for money. 1 carnivore and one veggy, both happy with what we were served.

The atmosphere , just what your looking for when eating with a partner, was very calming and romantic. The food was amazing, cooked perfect as you liked it. Staff were at hand when required but gave you the space and time to eat and enjoy the meal in your own time.

As a couple we often eat out. The Sunday lunch we had was beautiful. The price for what we had was fair and the service was fine. No complaints from the kaspers marske.

Had a meal here the staff were very young inexperienced and very slow. The food was even worse! It was mostly microwaved so cold in the middle. There was a dead fly in the mashed potatoes!!! When we complained we were told it happens at this time of year.

A strange one this. Was booked into a room for rest and recuperation prior to the long return drive to Glasgow whilst on business in Redcar. Admittedly, most people won't be in bed at 7pm on a Saturday night but I was. Any kind of sleep was impossible due to traffic noise from the adjacent main road and loud music and shouting from the bar below. Worth bearing in mind before booking.

Went for an evening meal yesterday and was very pleasantly surprised. We were served by a very pleasant young lady who had a broad accent. I apologise that that I can't think of a more distinctive way to describe her. The food was excellent and the service could not be better. We had previously been here for the Sunday carvery which is also worth a visit.

I can thoroughly recommend the Zetland for a meal. I visited as part of a group of 7 friends celebrating one of the parties birthday. It was the best meal I have had in a long while. The menu was extensive and very reasonably priced. Everyone of us had an empty plate at the end of the meal! The vegetables were cooked to perfection, the salad was fresh + crispy + the chips were delicious. The portions were very generous too.There was a good choice of deserts, it took us a while to choose, they all sounded delicious + indeed were!The waitress was very attentive and cheerful.Nothing was too much trouble. She even provided candles for the birthday cake one of us brought along (but having forgotten to bring candles). Amazing value, around £10 for a 2 course quality meal with tea or coffee. We rebooked for next month before we left.

My husband and I visit the Zetland Hotel every Thursday night for parmo night, it is great value £7.95 for parmo and a pint, the food is always hot and comes with proper home made chips and salad and it is certainly value for money and the food is great, we also have lunch there every sunday, you have to book as it is so popular, the staff are great and always very helpful, it is £8.95 for 2 courses and everything is fresh nothing frozen.

Just been for a family meal with 4 of us. It was a lovely meal, all served hot and all together. Everybody finished there meal and didn't leave a scrap of food. Will definitely return and so much better than the ship. So glad they have got competition now and we have somewhere decent to eat in marske again. The beer was good and tasty as well

Went today for a mothers day meal , had just the main course , and wished I never bothered .£26+ for 2 very thin fatty pieces of meat, the mash was just massive chunky potato raw carrots , and when I complained about finding black gunk in my coke the reply was 'well you will of drunk most of them' .Very very disgusted with food and do yourselves a huge favour and go to Jac's in Redcar

Have eaten in the restaurant here quite a number of times and have found it good value, and being a vegetarian have asked for different items not on the menu and abracadabra it is served up with no hassle, don't mind waiting a bit of time as it is cooked to order. We went here as a family for Sunday lunch and would have to say everything about it was extremely good.The service when we arrived was extremely good as we were seated and our orders taken very promptly and courteously.There was then 4 choices of meat and fresh vegetables (no frozen) with more than enough of everything to go around.To top it off it was also extremely reasonably priced so will definitely be returning in the very near future (we actually booked our next trip on the way out!)

I visited The Zetland Hotel on Sunday 2 November 2014 in a party of 8 people. As usual, the staff were very welcoming and EFFICIENT. We had a variety of meals and all were served at the same time, freshly cooked, piping hot in a relatively short time. We had 2 children in the party - one of which is a very fussy eater! - the manageress arranged for him to be served without meat / veg (in other words with just a Yorkshire pudding & mashed potato ) - then only charged a minimal amount! This restaurant is very airy, well lit and exceptionally clean. The staff are well presented and nothing is too much trouble for them. I have recommended this hotel / restaurant to many people and would certainly do so again without hesitation. Members of my family stay here when visiting and ALL have been more than satisfied with the rooms & service they have received.

Went for Sunday three people had 3 different meals all served at the same time and very polite and friendly service restaurant well decorated and prices very reasonable will go again, recommend this place to anyone first class

This is very nice hotel both for drinks and food. I can highly recommend the restaurant. It is very clean, the food is cooked while you wait so is very fresh and hot when delivered to your table. The prices are not exorbitant and the meals are very good value for money. The breakfast menu is vast and this meal is also served piping hot.The staff cannot do enough to help make your visit an enjoyable one.I even recommended this as a place to stay for my cousin and she has made 3 return visits - that's how good it is. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

This was our 2nd visit in a month and we were not disappointed - the Zetland has been refurbed and the staff offer a warm welcome with great service and tasty food. The Sunday lunch is fantastic value, I fear when more people get to know what the Zetland has to offer, you will have to book weeks in advance?! Get there soon before you're in a long queue......

After having several cracking weekday and Sunday lunches here I booked for my Mums 75th birthday. Although the dining room should have been closed on a Monday (and a bank holiday one at that) they were only too pleased to open for us as a private party.The staff were friendly and attentive as always and the food fabulous, so fresh and tasty. A party of "older" clients are always uber fussy but I think The Zetland have scored some new customers off the back of my Mums birthday lunch.Don't dismiss this as because it looks like a local pub. The dining room is separate from the bar, spotlessly clean and well presented. The food is amazing.

This was my first visit to the Zetland for a Sunday lunch. All I can say is it was absolutely beautiful all home cooked delicious. Very good value for money. We will definitely be making another visit even considering Xmas day if still available to book.

Fantastic homemade food using fresh vegetables and good sized portions. Would reccomend the pate starter and stroganoff main, the deserts were a delight.Very friendly and helpfull staff, nothing too much trouble.Would highly recommend a visit.
