I couldn’t fault the Jolly Sailor on this particular visit 6.10.24! Even though they were very busy our roast dinners came to the table on a ‘ hot’ plate & piping hot plenty of lovely hot Very hot vegetables & Lovely gravy! Extremely poor service apart from an elderly waiter which was lovely. Haven’t been here in years, and dare say it will be many years before I return. Carvery’s were served to share, which didn’t make sense to those that payed for ‘go large’ opposed to those that ordered ‘regular’. My children didn’t eat at all and I had one chip off of my plate. We were a large group and was never made aware of the ‘no split bill’ policy. We were rudely made aware at the till upon paying.

The Diane sauce was expensive but to die for. I'd go back just for that. Of the five tables with customers, three had dogs - there are even dog selections included on the menu! So yes to dog friendly. Busy when we arrived and short staffed (we were advised), asked if we were happy to wait 20mins - we were. It was only 10 minutes in the end. Worth waiting. Beautiful Cole slaw. Tons of parking spaces. Easy to miss the pub if not looking for it. The pub is nothing much to look at, bit tatty 8f anything but all we wanted was decent food - and we got it. Offered me container to put non-eaten food to take home. I had rump steak cooked to perfection , unusual as I like a blue steak and more often than not it comes overcooked, this was perfect if maybe a little tough but then rump can be, partner had large burger and it was very large. He ate it all and said it was good. It looked very good to me. Will definitely return

Great find on our week away! Dog friendly in the bar area, the staff were welcoming and the food was unreal!! Simple, homemade, local food. There is a small carpark and then road side parking, just off the A road so you can't miss it. Would 100% recommend and advise to pre-book a table to avoid disappointment.

Nice place for a meal and a drink. We were a group of 8 that turned up without booking on in the hope of a table. The staff were very pleasant and sorted out a table for us very quickly. It wasn't busy being a midafternoon weekday. The service was steady much to the annoyance of the four youngsters in our group (age range of 10-16 years) but understandably by the remaining four adults. A slight mix up with one starter was rectified without issue. Food all around was very good along with the service. No complaints whatsoever. Highly recommend.

The food is average. We had potato skins they weren't very crispy and when slightly squeezed oil oozed out, the garlic sauce did not taste of garlic. My partner had a chicken breast in cheese and bacon sauce the breast was very small and could hardly be seen under the sauce it was probably about half a breast. My dish was a vegetable pasta bake. The pasta was overcooked and the sauce tastes. The menu was very limited for vegetarians. We ate here a couple of weeks ago and the food was nice so we returned but after our most recent experience we won't return.

Thought we would give The Jolly Sailors another visit as the last Sunday lunch visit was a disaster, in fact embarrassing the lack of food we received. So, today we all ordered Sunday lunch and yet again the portions of vegetables were minimal to say the least. We all had less than half a desert spoon of each vegetable each, disgraceful when you’re looking forward to a nice meal and it wasn’t cheap. If I hadn’t been with family I would have complained on the spot, I didn’t as they would have been embarrassed. So annoyed. Shame on the management 🤬🤬😡😡

Having been to the Jolly Sailor on many occasions I was very much looking forward to my birthday meal out. However we were very disappointed. We arrived for our table at 6.45pm a little early and we're greeted with a surly barman who asked if we booked then grunted that we go sit "over there somewhere" til he could get to us. No smile, no hello. No offer if drinks.....we sat and waited for 5 minutes before being brought menu's and then asked if we would like drinks. the pub had a few tables in seated already, but I've seen it much busier in the past. Another ten minutes went by and our monosyllabic waitress came, took the order, no smile, nothing. We ordered 3 main meals and waited and waited and waited...I have no qualms with waiting for fresh food. Indeed it says in the menu there may be a delay. BUT 1hr and 25 minutes for 2 premade Mac and cheese and a "pie" and chips is just taking the Mick! There was no apology, no explanation. The food was adequate, tho not worth the £14.95 for a bowl of gravy with a few bits of meat in and a puff pastry lid (doesn't constitute a pie in my opinion)! By the time the food arrived we were so ravenous, we ate was brought us for the most part. The "drive by" "Everything ok?" From the waitress who didn't even stop as she walked past our table was laughable. I hasten to add we didn't bother with dessert as I wanted to make it home before my next birthday arrived! Not a patch on how it was in the past VERY disappointing and won't be returning. Training in hospitality and manners would benefit this place.

This is the second time we’ve eaten here to celebrate a birthday of one of our grandchildren and again it was very good. The food was very tasty and all the portions were more than enough - none of us (child or adult) manged to eat all our meals. Drinks and food orders were taken quickly and while there was a bit of a delay waiting for the food it was worth it as it was clearly freshly cooked. The staff were friendly and attentive. I’m sure if we stayed closer we would visit more often.

First can I say that the last 3 reviews bear no resemblance whatsoever to the Jolly Sailor that we have visited three times in the last week. Our first visit was Friday lunchtime. We were spending a week in a rented cottage nearby and had arrived too early to be able to get in so went in search of sustenance. This pub stands alone on the road across the moors but when we pulled in the car park was full which is always a good sign. We were greeted by the friendliest barman we have met in a long time (hiya Paul) and managed to get the table in front of the log fire. Hubby decided on a steak and I chose the scampi and after a short wait because everything is cooked to order we tucked in. Food was beautifully presented and certainly piping hot. The steak was cooked exactly how hubby likes it. Bar started to thin out a bit so we had chance to chat to Paul. When he found out we were going to be in the area all week he recommended the Jolly Sailors Sunday lunch so we booked there and then. Sunday lunch turned out to be probably one of the best dine out Sunday lunches we have had in a long time. We both chose the roast pork which came out ready plated with a Yorkshire pudding and roast potatoes. We were then given 2 tureens containing 5 different veg for the 2 of us! Everything was fresh and cooked to perfection. £16.95 a head for a standard plate, other sizes available. We did call back on our last day for lunch again and the standards were just as high as on our first visit. Would have no hesitation in recommending the Jolly Sailor to anyone who needs feeding while in the area

Its,a shame people don't respect areas and are happy to throw cigarette ends on the floor especially when we had a dog wanting to lie down. The pub is vast inside , really old 17th century. A lonely rural pub by the Moors Road between Guisborough and Whitby, on the edge of the North York Moors. Some real ales and a decent Aspal's cider as well as the obvious products. The meals look good, but I have not tried them yet. This pub is served by buses 93 (Middlesbrough, Guisborough, Whitby & Scarborough) and 1 and 2 (Saltburn and Loftus) so it makes a very good spot to end a hike over the moors, where you can get in a pint or two before catching the bus back to normal life. Bus travellers, do not be put off by the absence of an actual bus stop sign - the buses do stop here, just be visible and wave at them, or tell the driver to let you off.

Had a meal as a family of 8. Very friendly and happy staff in this lovely pub. Meals came out at more or less the same time. My meal was a disappointment, I had smoked trout which I found to be very dry and not to my liking, my husband had half a chicken which he said was very dry. All the other meals were lovely so I guess we were just unlucky. When asked if all was ok with the food, I said that I did not eat the fish as it was not to my liking they said I should have said and they would have got me something else. I did say not to worry as I didn't like the taste of the fish so not really there fault entirely. All in all a lovely pub with lovely staff and mostly lovely food. Also this is a dog friendly pub.

Booked a table for evening meal for 3 of us and a well behaved dog. Seated in the bar area which was fine, the restaurant area looked very busy but soon emptied out as we arrived a bit later. Can’t fault the meals, extremely large portions and the most amazing onion rings. HOWEVER, what ruined it for us was the atmosphere , 2 different staff members served us, now I can’t say they were rude, but they were just mono syllabic , spoke when they had to and didn’t make us feel at all welcome…..not at all what you’d expect working in the hospitality industry. We ate and got out as quick as we could without looking at the pudding menu. I can only assume they’d had a bad day as the other reviews seem very positive , but I certainly would not return!

I'd go again, timely delivery and service was fine. I've drawn a bit of a blank but hope its helps.

Popped in for dinner this week, was really impressed with the food, good portion sizes and amazing onion rings! However, what let it down and made us not want to stay for long or return again, was the atmosphere. The staff were polite but not friendly, only spoke when they had to, didn’t check to see if food was ok or we had everything, had to get up and go to the bar to ask for condiments. Didn’t make us feel very welcome, can only think they must’ve had a bad day cos the other reviews seem good!

I've been coming here 40 plus yrs & they have always had Friendly staff, GREAT FOOD by DALE FRAZER & the Sunday lunches are beautiful, the meat is so moist & always more than you can eat, Attentive when asking for something, Lovely View as it is on the Moor Road between Guisborough & Whitby. WELL, WORTH GOING IF YOU ONLY WANT A DRINK OR JUST A MEAL OR BOTH. It also has a play park for the kids, so you can sit & relax while they play. I will keep coming here for the next 40 plus yrs, as we like it so much 10/10.

Superb selection of breakfast choices, prompt service by friendly staff. Pancakes with streaky bacon and syrup with blueberries made for a welcome change. Great atmosphere!

Very pleased to see that this shop has reopened after a long closure. Got a tasty sausage and chips - they stop cooking fish when getting near closing times, I arrived at 18:50 and sausage and chips was the only dish on offer. Be careful of restricted opening hours, particularly early closing times in the evenings.

Excellent, better than Trenchers in Whitby, lots to choose from. Staff and service couldn’t be better. Haddock really fresh with good quality fries, plenty of tartare sce. Black Sheep up to snuff as well. A nice experience.
