The food was delicious, the best chips I have tasted in years. My friend had mince and dumplings and my wife had macaroni cheese, both delicious but too large a portion. Waitress was on her own ,so they were clearly short staffed.

Having been to the Jolly Sailor on many occasions I was very much looking forward to my birthday meal out. However we were very disappointed. We arrived for our table at 6.45pm a little early and we're greeted with a surly barman who asked if we booked then grunted that we go sit "over there somewhere" til he could get to us. No smile, no hello. No offer if drinks.....we sat and waited for 5 minutes before being brought menu's and then asked if we would like drinks. the pub had a few tables in seated already, but I've seen it much busier in the past. Another ten minutes went by and our monosyllabic waitress came, took the order, no smile, nothing. We ordered 3 main meals and waited and waited and waited...I have no qualms with waiting for fresh food. Indeed it says in the menu there may be a delay. BUT 1hr and 25 minutes for 2 premade Mac and cheese and a "pie" and chips is just taking the Mick! There was no apology, no explanation. The food was adequate, tho not worth the £14.95 for a bowl of gravy with a few bits of meat in and a puff pastry lid (doesn't constitute a pie in my opinion)! By the time the food arrived we were so ravenous, we ate was brought us for the most part. The "drive by" "Everything ok?" From the waitress who didn't even stop as she walked past our table was laughable. I hasten to add we didn't bother with dessert as I wanted to make it home before my next birthday arrived! Not a patch on how it was in the past VERY disappointing and won't be returning. Training in hospitality and manners would benefit this place.

This is the second time we’ve eaten here to celebrate a birthday of one of our grandchildren and again it was very good. The food was very tasty and all the portions were more than enough - none of us (child or adult) manged to eat all our meals. Drinks and food orders were taken quickly and while there was a bit of a delay waiting for the food it was worth it as it was clearly freshly cooked. The staff were friendly and attentive. I’m sure if we stayed closer we would visit more often.

First can I say that the last 3 reviews bear no resemblance whatsoever to the Jolly Sailor that we have visited three times in the last week. Our first visit was Friday lunchtime. We were spending a week in a rented cottage nearby and had arrived too early to be able to get in so went in search of sustenance. This pub stands alone on the road across the moors but when we pulled in the car park was full which is always a good sign. We were greeted by the friendliest barman we have met in a long time (hiya Paul) and managed to get the table in front of the log fire. Hubby decided on a steak and I chose the scampi and after a short wait because everything is cooked to order we tucked in. Food was beautifully presented and certainly piping hot. The steak was cooked exactly how hubby likes it. Bar started to thin out a bit so we had chance to chat to Paul. When he found out we were going to be in the area all week he recommended the Jolly Sailors Sunday lunch so we booked there and then. Sunday lunch turned out to be probably one of the best dine out Sunday lunches we have had in a long time. We both chose the roast pork which came out ready plated with a Yorkshire pudding and roast potatoes. We were then given 2 tureens containing 5 different veg for the 2 of us! Everything was fresh and cooked to perfection. £16.95 a head for a standard plate, other sizes available. We did call back on our last day for lunch again and the standards were just as high as on our first visit. Would have no hesitation in recommending the Jolly Sailor to anyone who needs feeding while in the area

The staff understand about gluten intolerance, there's a proper chef, the food both times has been great. This place is only a short drive for us, feel I've found a belter of an establishment to enjoy proper well cooked food at ok prices. Good portion size. Staff friendly. Cosy old building. Although we could've gone inside to eat we stayed outside in the courtyard as we were talking to fellow campervanners. Sadly there's no real differention outside for smoking areas of not and so our lovely homemade food experience was ruined a little due to smoke. Its,a shame people don't respect areas and are happy to throw cigarette ends on the floor especially when we had a dog wanting to lie down. The pub is vast inside , really old 17th century. Staff polite and helpful food amazing. A good BritStop find. Maybe move smoking area right away from food areas outside please. Recommended

A lonely rural pub by the Moors Road between Guisborough and Whitby, on the edge of the North York Moors. Some real ales and a decent Aspal's cider as well as the obvious products. The meals look good, but I have not tried them yet. This pub is served by buses 93 (Middlesbrough, Guisborough, Whitby & Scarborough) and 1 and 2 (Saltburn and Loftus) so it makes a very good spot to end a hike over the moors, where you can get in a pint or two before catching the bus back to normal life. Bus travellers, do not be put off by the absence of an actual bus stop sign - the buses do stop here, just be visible and wave at them, or tell the driver to let you off.

Had a meal as a family of 8. Very friendly and happy staff in this lovely pub. Meals came out at more or less the same time. My meal was a disappointment, I had smoked trout which I found to be very dry and not to my liking, my husband had half a chicken which he said was very dry. All the other meals were lovely so I guess we were just unlucky. When asked if all was ok with the food, I said that I did not eat the fish as it was not to my liking they said I should have said and they would have got me something else. I did say not to worry as I didn't like the taste of the fish so not really there fault entirely. All in all a lovely pub with lovely staff and mostly lovely food. Also this is a dog friendly pub.

Booked a table for evening meal for 3 of us and a well behaved dog. Seated in the bar area which was fine, the restaurant area looked very busy but soon emptied out as we arrived a bit later. Can’t fault the meals, extremely large portions and the most amazing onion rings. HOWEVER, what ruined it for us was the atmosphere , 2 different staff members served us, now I can’t say they were rude, but they were just mono syllabic , spoke when they had to and didn’t make us feel at all welcome…..not at all what you’d expect working in the hospitality industry. We ate and got out as quick as we could without looking at the pudding menu. I can only assume they’d had a bad day as the other reviews seem very positive , but I certainly would not return!

Sadly the Jolly Sailors are at risk of damaging their reputation for excellent Sunday lunch. People frequent this establishment for the QUALITY of the meals provided. Unfortunately that was not the case today. Meat was tough, dry and chewy. It was pre-cut (the sort of thing you’d get in weatherspoons) and the Chicken meat whilst breast, was clearly not whole chickens - it was from bulk packs. Obviously the cost of materials, energy and general expenditure mean the price of the meals had to increase, but I fear ‘penny pinching’ on the main part of the meal (meat) will ultimately result in a drop in trade. We’d much prefer to pay an extra couple of quid for the quality this place is renowned for… It takes years to build a reputation and days to wreck it. It was the worst and most expensive lunch we’ve had at the Jolly’s, and was not enjoyable. The staff didn’t need to ask if all was ok with the meal, it was obvious it wasn't by the meat left. This looked similar on other tables. I’ll certainly be asking whether it’s pre-cut meat before booking a table in the future. This is not mud-slinging, just an honest review in the hope the management re-assess their priorities to ensure the standards the Jolly Sailors is popular for remain. Such a shame, we absolutely love this place… ☹️ As a positive, the serving staff and the vegetables served were to the same excellent standard customers are used to.
