The Fox & Hounds in Redcar and Cleveland

Me and my partner are on a cycle tour and booked room for the night, due to some navigation errors on our part we were very late and tired, the owner and the staff went above and beyond for us, staying late to make sure we had a place to stay and some hot food. We had an amazing sleep after a hard day and the breakfast in the morning was delicious. Can't thank the staff enough for really helping us out in our time of need. Great place and even greater people. Thank you so much, I wish I could give more stars.

This place has really gone downhill. The Retriever Bar is now closed and owner Abi is now charging for parking. He is running it into the ground!

Visit on the 15th of January for seven adults,had a lovely carvery,tasty and cooked to perfection,all enjoyed it and will definitely be back Thankyou so much.

We returned on Sunday for lunch after a beautiful Christmas dinner, which was the first time we had been since it was taken over. We were mainly served by the assistant manger who was so rude, not only to my husband and I but to my children also, which is why we will not be returning. We sat at our table and had our drinks order taken, we were then asked if we were ordering off the main menu or having carvery, we said carvery and the next minute she was over with 4 tokens and told us she had radioed for the chef to come serve our food. Firstly we hadn't really looked at the menu and we definitely weren't given to choice of having starters or even when to go up for our food for that matter, just rushed over. When we finished our meals she came over to clear the table and told my 6 year old son to pass her his plate? I've never been to a restaurant that has asked a child to pass over his empty plate!! My children had ice cream for dessert, there was chocolate, strawberry and vanilla to choose from. They asked if they could have a mix, she looked disgusted as she told them they were only allowed 2 scoops... I mean I would of paid extra for a spoonful of extra ice-cream, for god sake it wouldnt break the bank. The next bit was what annoyed us the most, I noticed on the menu it said sauce and sprinkles, which they didn't get. My husband took the ice creams back and asked if they could have some sauce. She returned the ice-cream "just so you know, you didn't ordered sauce and sprinkles" I said I didn't know I had to? "Yes, not every child likes it" which is fair enough but why could she not ask the kids if they would like sauce and sprinkles? Her entire attitude from start to finish was just disgusting and she should not be front of house especially dealing with children! My 8 year old discribed her as "ignorant"

Used this Resturant many times before always lovely . Christmas Fayre was disappointing dry meat and dry roast potatoes vegetables were disappointing to not value for the price

All three of us had excellent meals couldn't fault service and the quality. I recommend beef roast dinner if you have a big appetite

Food was worth the wait as they were busy. Had beef curry which was delish an dChristmas Fayre, very filling and reasonably priced. However on looking at the bill once home was charged £2.75 for soda water and 50p for dash of lime and £2.55 for half of coke. Drinks must be most expensive in the area.

Went here for a family meal for 3 adults. Really friendly and homely atmosphere. Food was great and reasonably priced. Never seen yorkshire puddings as big. All in all a great meal and will definitely return. Highly recommend.

Visited with family to celebrate a birthday absolutely perfect night food was beautiful as always service was five star from Kerrie we all felt welcomed nothing was to much trouble so Thankyou for making our little family celebration lovely

Visited here at the weekend with my husband and was amazed at the experience. We've visited here in the past but this was the best yet. We ordered veggie sausages and gravy as we arrived and these didn't take long to be brought to the table. I then had Yorkshire pudding, roasties, mash, mushy peas and carrots. The veggie sausages were soft fresh and the attentive staff were polite. We were served by Tegan, who was extremely helpful, and other staff. I recommended this place to my mam as its only £5 on a Thursday. She's just been tonight and it sounded as lovely as Sunday's for us. We even took some cuttings of meat home for our dog. Thank you staff, we'll visit again soon.

My partners family came to visit and we decided to take them here as we have been on a few occasions for carvery which has been nice , we all ordered our meals when on arrival my steak and ale pie was rock hard so l took it back up to bar and explained l couldn't eat that, the member of staff came over and asked if l wanted another l said if it was going to be in next 10 mins she came back over said yes so l replied OK, it came on 10 mins started eating 3/4 through meal a member of staff asked if others were finished and he started to take away plates he then spilted a drink over table which ending up going over my meal and over my partners mams trousers he did apologise but l couldn't finish my meal as it had spilt drink on it , on that my partner went up to speak to staff to be told l could have moved to finish my meal and also he could have another drink given , but why would he want another drink when others had finished, was offered just 10%, off cost of our meal which was 72 pounds in total which l find absolutely shocking not even offered to give my meal for nothing and my partners drink free either so we will not b returning

Only got round to writing this review , I held my wedding reception at the Retreiver bar in April 2022, having rescheduled it four times (at no extra cost). On every occasion they were fantastic and nothing was too much trouble. Jordan sat down a couple of times (changed my.mimd a few times) to discuss layout, food, timings , prices , capacity etc. She prepared the room on the day, did absolutely everything for me and it looked perfect. The food was georgous. Jordan and her team were amazing, would certainly hold any special event here. Well done everyone involved.

Visited while staying nearby and were very impressed with the food here. The parmos were amazing, delicious and so huge! They were served with home cooked chips and salad and we all struggled to finish. Our two teenage sons have big appetites and they managed to clear their plates but were so full that they could not manage a pudding. The place seems very popular with the locals which makes for a nice friendly atmosphere. The staff were lovely, very helpful and friendly. We will definitely be back as we want to try the carvery after seeing how good it looked.

Been here many times and tried most options. Parmo here is fantastic. Have been less impressed with Sunday carvery though. It can sometimes be a bit variable not sure if that is due to chef on duty.

As always, a beautiful carvery. Everything hot and tasty. I visited with some people I support, this is their favourite place for Sunday lunch. The staff are so welcoming and friendly. Nothing is too much trouble, even when they are very busy.

Been twice this year and thoroughly enjoyed it both times. Good home cooked food and excellent chips. Would recommend the pies and yorkshire pudding wraps. Cocktails on draft are good. Shame strongbow is the draft cider. Friendly and helpful staff.

Food lovely, however very rude staff think the majority need to go on a basic manners course! Customer service was shocking, all the staff we saw/served us seemed so miserable! (one young girl was lovely though)

Well I can't come up with enough praise it really was a great visit! We stayed in the hotel next door for the weekend but arrived in bar Friday night to an amazing meal! Everything was fresh and the burger and chips was to die...

We booked for 4/8/21 for 2 adults & our dog, glad we did as it was quite busy. The meal was lovely as always & huge portions so couldn't finish. I would highly recommend you give the place a try you won't be disappointed.

Fabulous service, messaged to ask what was on the carvery. Ordered to our specific requirements. We collected at the arranged time. It was ready. Piping hot when we got it home, absolutely beautiful food. 10/10 couldn't fault anything. Highly recommended

Discovered the bar meals a few weeks back after a recommendation. Not disappointed food tasty, we now book every week. Fast service, polite friendly staff.

Visited here late on a Sunday afternoon after a walk around Guisborough Woods. They only serve carveries and parmos on a sunday but it was the carvery we were after so this was fine. We ordered with the waitress then were allocated our slot to go up to the serving deck. I had large so had all 3 meats (Turkey, Pork & Beef). These were all amazing cuts and probably the best turkey i've ever tasted! The server loaded my plate up with as little or much as i asked and everything was absolutely spot on. Would highly recommend here for a carvery!

I was staying at the hotel for a few nights while walking the Cleveland Way, and was never disappointed with my choice of meal. Excellent carvery (plenty of gravy!) Yorkshire pudding wrap, chicken with bubble and squeak cake, and parmo. I am Yorkshire born, but I'd never heard of parmo (I had to Google it. Fascinating!)I am back home now, thinking how I could replicate those lovely meals.Gill

I did book the wrong fox and Hounds to start with The Staff were amazing couldn’t do enough for you, friendly, happy explained the COVID rules Ordering was easy kids could have what they wanted 3 Carverys ordered and chicken nuggets Food was amazing, hot, and freshly cooked gravy was actually gravy Tasted lovely clean plates of course Deserts omfg huge is an understatement they tasted amazing as well Please please go there and try the Sunday lunch out 10/10 for everything.

Yet again just had another lovely meal here, staff very polite, food and service was great, just a shame that it wasnt that busy, all these people that went for eat out to help out should still be helping businesses out, price of food are reasonable anyway despite that, we will definitely be going again soon.

Me the wife and two daughters booked a table for a meal. All the meals were outstanding and service was faultless. Price was very reasonable, if I had one negative it would be there was only 4 tables of people in so the atmosphere was a bit subdued for such a big restaurant. All covid precautions are in place, well done Retriever.

We popped in on our way to Sandsend for a long weekend. We were greeted by a lovely young lady and offered a menu. I went for Jacket Potato with Prawn Marie Rose and my better half had Small Parmo with chips and salad. It’s a good job he didn’t get the large as the portions are huge! Lovely food and excellent value. This place is a hidden gem. Go visit.

I had lunch here last week and decided to call back in a week later. The food is like your mum cooking your dinner, with a big dinner. The chef here is brill I love the food will definitely be calling back, it just round the corner from me, I’ve lived here for a year and can’t believe it’s this long to call in. After looking around the Yorkshire dales,all day, we returned to our favorite hotel, feeling hungry & tired we needed a meal before retiring to bed , Met Rhys outside the retriever resto,next to our hotel, asked if we could have a meal, he replied we are fully booked , he duly,went inside to ask if they could do anything, returned to say I've asked ,and would be happy to serve us both a meal , It must be said , that we were both impressed how this lovely lad , with a Welsh name ,sorted our delema out .Would recommend this resto to everyone , Best wishes from Kevin & Viv , from South Wales

On holiday at Howla Hay Farm Guisborough we were going to Whitby but once there it was mobbed so decided to come home for something to eat. On the way we passed The Fox & Hounds & decided to turn back & have lunch there. Iam really glad we did the staff were so friendly & welcoming & even our dog was welcome.They did tell us it was a 45min wait for food which we didn't mind so had a few drinks while waiting. I had the gammon steak which was delicious with either a double yoked egg or 2 separate eggs which were cooked perfect as was the unusual mushrooms & the chips were home mademy partner had the hunters chicken which he also said was delicious.Well worth the wait, value for money & big portions, we will definitely go back again before we go home. Walked in with a dog, dogs are allowed in a separate indoor area, ordered our meals and advised of a 45 minute delay, but ordered anyway. We had no objection to waiting, if it proved to be worth the wait. Hunter's chicken and a gammon, both were absolutely excellent, home made and truly well worth the wait. Both of us were outfaced by the meals. We'll be making a point of going back there again.

Booked a table for the Sunday carvery for my daughter’s birthday treat which was lovely and couldn’t fault it . We then waited 25 for our table to be cleared and was wanting a dessert menu after this wait I believe it to be the manger came over, when I explained we had waited 25mins for the dessert menu she said she was sorry but short staff and it had been busy it was 3pm the room was near empty . There were 3 waitresses who were there cleaning and re setting the tables they aware of us sat but not one attempted to come over and see to us or other customers. When we were finally approached for the dessert menu we had at this point decided we’d waited long enough now 30 minutes. Went to pay waited another 5 minutes to be told the card machine wasn’t working did we have cash ,No ,I was then asked to give my bank details for later payment but my daughter insisted it was an unsecured request I left my number for them to contact me,The lady then asked for me to check our order it was wrong ,they had got the drink order wrong which had put the cost of the bill up. I’m appalled at how unprofessional the whole service was and I willl not be recommending this place again very very unhappy customer. Beautiful food appalling service

Been a few times lately, fab carvery but this time opted for the bar menu. Everyone else picked a parmo, which there's plenty of variety for toppings. Spicy meatball, steak and onion and a fajitas one was ordered. All 3 looked and tasted amazing. Chips were nice but prefer a bit chunkier, that's just personal preference though. I ordered the toad in the hole. Unfortunately it wasn't toad in the hole when it came but just sausages sat in a giant Yorkshire pudding. The sausages were lovely but the Yorkshire was far to overdone and crispy on the edges. Slightly disappointing as I'd been looking forward to it for days. Proper toad in the hole sausages should be cooked in the Yorkshire. Service was good and staff friendly so will definately go back. Would recommend this place for value and definately parmos.

Called for Sunday lunch by chance with no booking but not a problem. Very very busy and people constantly coming and going to what is obviously a very popular venue. The whole experience was really pleasant in all aspects venue,food,staff and service. The food in particular was all superbly cooked and really tasty and in total lunch with a pint was very reasonable. Will definitely be going back again in the future.

The meal was very nice and the restaraunt was clean & tidy. Staff very pleasant. But to be fair new owners have just taken over and are in the process of refurbishing. Could not fault the breakfast. Worth another visit once new owners settled in and refurb complete. Stokesly itself was a very nice market town full of privately owned shops and free car parking

Booked for New years eve and New years day stop over but very disappointed with room so only stayed one night. Mould/mildew round window and toilet in a disgusting state. Thread bare grubby carpetsand shower cubicle door off the runners, got it back in but didn't use it.Retreiver bar had badly stained seating, god knows from what but it is dog friendly, even though signs saying no animals on seats.NYE buffet very poor and unfortunately the entertainment proved disappointing as well with a badly rehearsed singer badly out of sync with young man on the decks. Feedback galore and false starts proved very embarrassing.Had an early night as we couldn't handle it anymore.Breakfast not too bad but decided not to stay for second night even though we had paid for it.Put keys into reception box as no one readily available to speak to about our concerns.Put it down to experience but it was pretty dire, had far better rooms at Premier Inn for less than half the price.So overall i would not recommend this place as it has gone downhill so much since our last stay.

Been tonight for the EAT ALL YOU CAN Buffet night,Endian,Chinese,Italian,English food,could not fault any of the food and service was great from friendly staff,good price and value for money.Mince n Dumplings were to die for.

we had a family meet;; up ,get together at the retriever,there was seventeen of us that met up on thursday carvery night.the staff were warm and friendly and very helpful, the carvery was lovely ,the beef was nicely cooked and there was a good choice of veg.the gravy was really nice and we had no complaints and will definitely go back again

Heard so many good thing about this place so thought we would try it . Doesn’t live any where near up to its reputation. The meat was very dry and very stingy two tiny slithers of beef on an adult meal. chewy Yorkshire puddings and the veg was just tasteless slop. Very disappointed won’t be returning.

We came for a Sunday carvery and the food was amazing,we’re going back here tomorrow with our parents this time for lunch. The service was outstanding staff very polite. The place was very clean and would recommend anybody to come here to eat😊

It was good for 2night stay, walked there from kildale, its on the walk. Quiet area, clean, kettle and fridge in our room which were useful. Shower was good. Has a nice childrens play area. Also good parking.

My family go here fairly regularly for meals. We are all fans of the Sunday dinner, which has a fantastic variety and is always delicious. I'm personally a big fan of the cauliflower cheese! There's always a choice of meats, the veg is always fresh, and the gravy is always nice and thick! The food is consistently great.

We called in for a quick drink on our way home from a day out and decided to stay and ordered food, there was 3 of us my hubby, our grandson who's 13yr and myself plus our 2 little shtzus and we are all so please we decided to stay, the food was fantastic all freshly cooked and the staff just couldn't do enough to accommodate us, will definitely be returning,

I had a hot shot parmo which was poor chips were nice, coleslaw cheap, and the garlic mayo just tasted like cheap mayo not garlic wont be going back.

I ate here twice in the same week. The first time with a local who new staff at the pub. Our meal was good and the service was good. The second time with other visitors to the area. The bar staff weer often missing and when they were there they were talking to the locals more than bothering about our meals. I made a complaint about my meal but the only response I got was "I'll tell the chef" End of story I heard no more

Stopped off for a second time after day out. I had a stacker burger and believe it really was stacked, 2 homemade and very tasty burgers with thick bacon slices, the biggest onion rings I've had lots of cheese and served with homemade chips, coleslaw and salad.

Having been to this establishment before, I was slightly loathe to go back. This was because of a poor experience.

We visit the Retriever most weeks, for a few drinks or something to eat. It is a lovey, family business and staff are welcoming and friendly. The food is freshly cooked, tasty and good portions.

Went for lunch on the spur of the moment Friday 15th Feb, with my husband, son and two grandchildren. Really pleased to see some nice, different dishes on a gluten free menu, they also do vegan. I opted for the gluten free Parmo, it was explained that as it was cooked fresh I may have a little wait, it was worth it, delicious. I swapped chips for jacket potato and the meal was served with a lovely salad and coleslaw, very generous portions. My husband had the homemade corned beef pie from the specials board, he said there was plenty of corned beef in it and it was served with salad, coleslaw and homemade chips. Son had gammon steak, a lovely thick piece served with salad, coleslaw, fried egg and pineapple and chips, he had also ordered onion rings which were homemade too. Had he realised how generous the meal portions were he may not have ordered the onion rings, he was so full he was unable to eat all his chips which he said were really good. The grandchildren chose from the children's meal deal. They each chose one of about five mains dishes, then one each of potatoes, chips, pasta or garlic bread and one of five or six vegetables, this was accompanied by a carton of squash and followed by ice cream for £4.95 each. We were served by Jordan Gibson, she was very helpful, she also brought crayons and pictures for the children to colour in while we were waiting, a big thank you. We'll definitely be back.

My son and I had 7 course Xmas dinner today and it was superb but the staff were amazing and attentive and could not do enough Jane Scott and Jordan Gibson very professional and it was worth every penny £45.00

Today we called in to try the carvery. The food was very nice. Good selection of vegetables. Atmosphere was o.k..Staff welconing and friendly.

Had a brilliant night last night Michael Buble impersonator was excellent and will defiantly go again if he returns. Carvey was included in price couldn't fault it all round good night.

I visited The Chase quite late in the day yesterday at about 4.30 when out with a family member. The place was due to close at 5 and we were unsure if we would be rushed. Can honestly say that it was absolutely amazing and fantastic. I had been recommended this by a friend. The owner Julie was the person serving us. We ordered the afternoon tea for £10 per person. It was amazing. A fantastic choice of sandwiches. There were 3 sandwiches each, a lovely little salad dish each, a slice of quiche some crisps with the sandwiches and a wrap. Then for the sweet there was a slice of cheesecake and a scone with jam and cream. Also as much tea or coffee that you could drink. If that was not enough there were additional cakes as well.

We visited for a midweek lunch just in passing, and the staff on duty were friendly and inviting. Draught beer was well kept. For lunch we shared their homemade chicken pate to start and it was lovely (and definitely plenty for two)! We then shared a chicken parmo (cos we'd seen this talked about on the programme "Redcar" and wondered what this was). Well it was delicious! And huge! And just to say (re earlier reviews of the previous owners) the place was beautifully clean. We fully recommend this bar. We aren't local but we will be back!

I took my family to Retriever Bar & Restaurant in Slapewath for a Carvery on a Thursday evening. 2 adults and 3 young children and we all really enjoyed it.

Just had our Sunday lunch here and we could not fault a thing,we were not booked in just turned up and the staff we’re brilliant they got us a lovely table with lots of room the room itself was air conditioned lovely set out and immaculate then came the food WOW self service brilliant we loved every mouth full thank you all so much we will be calling in soon again it will not let me select a rating further down the page but all were the best score

We stayed in the Fox & Hound on Saturday evening, 14 July, and had dinner in the restaurant. The waitress took our drinks order and advised that there was a 25 minute delay in main meals which didn't bother us as we were able to chat and enjoy our drinks before our meals. I had the stroganoff and my partner ordered the mixed grill and his portion was huge. He didn't manage to finish it but said it was excellent. Both meals were delicious.

Visited with family. Food was beautiful. Large portions, reasonably priced. Friendly service. Couldn't fault it. Will definitely be back

Tried the carvery today. First time since the restaurant has changed ownership. Very impressed. Good size portions of meat. Real home made Yorkshire puddings. A really good choice of veg including cauliflower cheese & also mushy peas. A nice homely feel to the venue. Will be back again, maybe on a week day as it is slightly cheaper than a Sunday.

I had the worst meals. I ordered the steak and ale pie the pie was burnet on the edge. my mum order the gammon which is just to bits of bacon. It was the worst experience of food in my life will never be back

myself and my partner visited for lunch it was our first visit since been taken over. Staff were very friendly and helpful, i had the steak pie and my partner had the sausage egg and chips which we both enjoyed. They is a large selection of meals, a 2 for £14, childrens menu and carvery. We also had deserts i had the aero cheesecake was nice just cud of been a bit more minty. My partner had the choclate brownies and enjoyed. This pub is in a lovely location with alot to offer. We will be visiting again with our family.

I visited the restaurant for a lunch with seven friends and we were placed in the Dining Room around a big round table. This place used to be so popular but negative hygiene and food reports had caused problems. I must stress that it is now under new ownership and we were pleased with the cleanliness of the pub and the value for money. Apart from one of us we all had the carvery, the food was hot and we were served by pleasant, friendly members of staff. The carvery is only £5.99 during the week so for just over £10 I had a meal, a medium glass of wine and an americano. We all thought it was good and will return at some point.

went with family for a carvery last week and i have to say it was delicious. staff were very friendly, and welcoming. carvery was hot, tasty and to our liking, with varied vegetables, roast and mashed potatoes, and the best yorkshire puds we have had in a pub yet!!!!!! overall I would recommend a visit if you have not yet tried it. It was about six pound each, which is decent value. We will certainly be going back soon.

Called in at 5.30pm on a Saturday evening for a quick bite to eat. We were seated in the restaurant which was freezing cold. Cobwebs adorned the shelving above our table (5).

Don’t confuse the restaurant with the hotel of the same name in the same building, the food was hot and tasty and the drinks reasonably priced, the staff seemed to care too, somewhere I’d revisit but not somewhere luxurious!

We just had the carvery but it was good and we shall be going back in a couple of weeks.The carvery is £5 a head at the moment so good value for money and the drinks and desserts are not over price to made up...

We came upon the Fox and Hounds Hotel after a days outing and what a delight. Although walking into the bar, which is basic, we received a lovely welcome from the staff. We had 2 dogs with us, which were welcome too. There were 6 of us in total and we ordered the buffet carvery meal, which was on the menu that evening. The hotel also offer a carvery on Wednesdays and Sundays, price £7.95 and on Thursday for £5.95. The bar also offers a varied menu.

Visited Sunday 22nd Oct, four adults. We all had the carvery, it was great value, there was plenty of variety of fresh vegetables which were nicely cooked & hot. There was a choice of three meats which were lean & tasty, they'd no crackling left out but staff went to the kitchen & brought me a lovely crunchy good sized piece. Staff were pleasant & helpful. We had three different puddings which were all nice & good size. Will be back in the future.

We visited for sunday lunch on a busy day.

First time we've stopped here after passing hundreds of times. Had lunch sat outside in the sunshine. Food really good staff friendly.

We, arrived doon from Scotland ,on 26th August and arrived in Guisborough , looking for place to stay on speck . The young lad in the Fox in Guisborough said sorry we are full but try the Fox & Hound, so we did. Weel we must thank the lad for it was just 1st class from the moment we walked in the door, the young lass was so friendly & all was weel . Food & company were just 1st class. ( OWNER AND STAFF JUST THE BEST WHO COULD ASK FOR MORE WE WEEL BE BACK. TO ALL WHO READ THIS JUST GO FOR IT , MANY THANKS ANGUS AND JOSEPHINE )

Great Carvery served all week. Brilliant service, very good value - highly recommended. Would advise booking a table for Sunday lunch.

Dissapointing lunch of carvery today.Beef was so tough it was like leatherVegetables very poor qualitySwede over cooked so much it had lost it,s colour Yorkshire puddings were cold and toughAbsence of cranberry sauce to o with turkeyAmbience non starter as at 13 00 hrs there were only 6 persons eating in the carveryCannot recommend.Did advise of poor beef and were told chef would be advised

Me and my family went here for our lunch on Sunday, we had our reservations after reading other reviews on here but there was nothing to complain about whatsoever the food was excellent the staff were very helpful we will defiantly be visiting again in the future.
