We were trying to find somewhere to eat late on our travels home back to the dales when we came across the moorcock on trip advisor. Finding somewhere to eat past 7pm now seems a rarity. The service was outstanding, all staff were great to chat to and really helpful. The food was out of this world, we are big meat eaters and also farmers therefore to find somewhere that produced their own meat was amazing! There needs to be more places like the moorcock. We had the chicken Parmo & fillet steak and they were both delicious. No improvement needed in this field!! We will definitely be making sure we return for some tea on our next travels over this way. We were looking forward to a meal here. We both ordered the Shorthorn steaks, we had a choice of Fillet or Sirloin (same price), which I thought odd, as fillet is generally a more expensive cut. The meat that came was DEFINITELY NOT Fillet or Sirloin it was 50% gristle. In my youth I had worked in a butchers, I know my meat! My hubby explained to the waitress, who discounted some of our meal, and told the chef. We could see him behind the bar, but he didn't even look in our direction. We had tried to eat here last year, it was Grouse Season, the restaurant was very busy, we waited 1 hour for our order, we left in the end! Definitely avoid if you fancy a steak! Will not be returning.

Stayed at the adjacent Hill top huts for the weekend so I ate multiple times at this inn. Yes, the menu is a little limited, however, the quality is excellent and reasonably priced. They try to locally source a lot of their ingredients and it is freshly cooked. I had a ribeye steak that would better any I have eaten anywhere in the world, I was truly excellent. Sunday dinner was great with plenty to eat, you will need to book for that! as they sadly had to turn folks away such was the demand. This will become a regular dining haunt for me...and a shout-out to the staff. very helpful and friendly.

A lovely country inn with accommodation, camping huts and a large function room, my group and I used them all this weekend. We were looked after so well by friendly staff and hosts. The rooms and the hilltop huts were comfortable, clean and well appointed, the camping facilities were very good. The bar was well stocked and very reasonably priced. The cozy restaurant provides excellent traditional, homemade pub meals, make sure you leave room for a pudding, delicious! Surrounded by wildlife and spectacular views across the dales we really couldn't have asked for more. Highly recommended.

A traditional country inn with all the charm you would expect and with all the mod cons you would wish. The staff are welcoming and friendly; the service excellent and the very reasonably-priced food is superb and comes in generous "Northern portions". Our room was spotless and very comfortable. Thoroughly recommended and five stars in every category.

Firstly. The staff. Exceptional service. Attentive and friendly. Felt at ease immediately. We had a roast beef Sunday lunch. I believe the beef was raised locally, prize winning herd and wow ! Melted on the tongue and packed with Teesdale flavour. Delicious meal. The farmer and the chef. What a team. We stayed 2 nights in a lovely room. Clean and warm. The shower was the best hotel shower experience I have ever had. The breakfast buffet was gorgeous. My daughter stayed in a glamping pod, again. Brilliant, inexpensive and very cosy, the facilities on site are also exceptional. What a place. And the views of upper Teesdale. Breathtaking. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I have been frequenting the Moorcock Inn for years since the late 1970's, the food is good & the service is good, but what the 'decent' customers don't wish to hear is bad language when enjoying their meal. After lockdown & the sun was shining I thought I would call in to the Moorcock one Saturday afternoon for a beer & a little country air. Unfortunately, sitting at the table next to me were two women & three men-one of whom couldn't string a sentence together without using the 'f' word. As you would expect I relocate to another table to the rear of the inn where the sun didn't shine; so I left!I'm sure there's a byelaw stating 'No Swearing' on licensed premises!

The food is good & the service is superb, I'm not so sure about the table spacing. We have been frequenting this establishment for over 25 years & never have I been abuses by a so-called 'professional'. Beware of the Geordie NHS 'super spreader' (visitor). We all know how rife the virus is spreading on Tyneside, this is probably the reason why:-On Friday evening we visited the Moorcock Inn Eggleston outside Barnard Castle for a tipple. When entering the hotel I met a woman who was not wearing a face covering, so as you would expect I confronted her only to be met with a hail of Geordie abuse. She even had the gall to state she was an employee of the NHS & produced an ID to back up her claim. Apparently, she had asthma & thought she was exempt from wearing a face mask; 'NOT IN MY BOOK HINNY!'As most intelligent people know - we wear face coverings to protect others, so if you are not able to wear one for what ever reason don't mix in public places-especially if you are an NHS super spreading employee.

The food I would say is good but there isn't a category for 'Good'. On a sunday they have a set menu: One £10.95, Two £14.95 or Three courses £17.95 So value is fine. Okay choices for starters - four to choose from. Sadly main choices are poor Roast Beef or Pork; Scampi; Nut Roast; Sausage & Mash. Four desserts to choose from and they ran out of Sticky Toffee Pudding so had Meringue with strawberrys & icecream and Ginger Sponge and custard. What a disappointment. It is the smallest portion of ginger sponge I have ever seen. You would be better not having a dessert and saving the £3 for the extra course and buy a McVitties Ginger Sponge from a supermarket

The chicken burger was just a breast rather than an actual burger and was rather bland on a bun with just a bit of lettuce and one slice of tomato. The home made chips were very chunky which resulted in some of them still being raw in the centre. There was also not much service as they never came to check on us to see if the food was alright or if we would like more drinks. Once our plates had been collected we weren't even offered dessert.

We are constantly looking for new places to eat and we decided to pay a visit to the moorcock based on what we saw on the internet , the selection was great and quite varied which was brilliant as it’s difficult to find places that do things differently such as steak and ale pie and hunters chicken are becoming common place on almost every menu , we arrived and it is in a great location the restaurant is separate from the bar which is nice , we had sirloin, lasagne, scampi, and burger , all of them where very nice and with real home made chips which makes a refreshing change , the only gripe would be what is advertised on internet is not necessarily available on the menu when you visit , I would definitely visit again , very good value for money and big portions .

Called for an evening meal with a group of friends. We were shown into the back room, which at the time was empty and lacking any sort of atmosphere. The bar area looked full and boisterous which is possibly why the music was so loud as to be intrusive. At the bar there was a limited selection of beers (John Smiths or Guinness plus a couple of lagers and ciders). A pleasant enough young lady took our order and I chose the deep fried brie followed by steak and ale pie. The brie was fine but the pastry on the pie was wafer thin and tasteless. The filling itself was decent enough and filling. Prices were in line with other pub grub we've had. We left feeling a little disappointed in the whole experience.

We were told that we could eat in the "pool room". We agreed or otherwise we would have had to leave. Ordered our food and it came very quickly, a little too quickly to my liking. Chicken very bland, stuffing lukewarm, "roasties" al dente! Veg swimming in water. Hubby liked the lamb but I would say it was not worth the £11.95 per plate. Arrived by foot having walked a mile uphill to this pub on the edge of Eggleston. Ordered a gin and tonic and despite there being several varieties on tge bar top was given a basic gin from one of the optics, my husband had a beer. Mistake 1 was made by the young lady who was clearly not bothered whether we were there or Not! we asked for menus and my husband asked about "specials" as it said ask about our specials board. He was told there wasnt any. We sat and perused the small "pub grub" "usual suspects! Another couple arrived they asked about food, ordered drinks and what specials, another young woman said there was a 12oz sirloin and italian chicken available, take a seat she said i will come and get your order, she did! She walked straight past us, took their order and at this point we left! HOW RUDE! This place needs serioys staff training, on a monday in August very short sighted for a tourist area!

Lovely friendly pub with excellent food. What sets The Moorcock from the rest is the fact that the owners are farmers and almost all of the meat is from their own farm. In particular they farm British Shorthorn beef cattle. This means the steaks are excellent. I had a rib-eye (off the specials board) and it was one of the best steaks, if not the best steak, I'd ever eaten. Liz had real homemade lasagne and that too was extremely good. The accompanying chips were proper home cooked thick cut real chips full of flavour too, and plenty of salad.

Visited the Moorcock after it was recommended by a friend and we weren't disappointed, lover,y traditional bar area, with a nice simple menu with extras on the special board. We had a steak and ale pie and the gravy was amazing, guessing it was made from the roasts they had done. Will definitely be back again

Called the pub 2 hours before arrival Jo was very friendly and relaxed about when we arrived. We pulled up into the car park there was plenty of space leveling blocks needed. We decided to eat in the pub as it was sour last night of holiday and we weren't dissapointed. I had the Dexter rump steak and have to say it was the tastiest steak I've ever eaten. It was cooked to perfection to. My husband had the sirloin which was also great and he's not a massive steak eater. There was 2 well kept real ales and a roaring log fire what more can you ask for. ☺

We left it a bit late we thought to expect to be served ie about 1:50 pm but not at all. We were made very welcome & not rushed into making our menu selections. No actual kids menu but don't let that put you off as you get adult choices from the main menu in smaller portions & prices. Kids had chicken goujons which were very good & not cheap processed chicken bits like most chicken "nuggets"(got chicken fillet). Local sausage & mash, Gammon, & fish n chips were the adult choices & not a bit left. Jo was a delightful host & the chef john came out to see how our food was. in summary 5 meals, 5 drinks very enjoyable & less than £50.

We were on our way to Eggleston Hall Gardens and found this hostelry what a find. We had a wonderfully warm greeting by the lady host and settled for a table with fantastic views of the dales. We ordered lunch my wife chose the fish and chips and asked if a small portion was possible '' no problem '' was the reply. I chose the ham,egg and chips option. The food was excellent ,the ham delicious and the chips perfection. If you are in the area take a diversion and make this your food destination.

Stopped off for lunch with husband, I had hunters chicken and hubby had steak. Both were cooked beautifully and we were so full we couldn't manage puds! The dessert choices looked good though. The landlady was very welcoming. Would definitely recommend a visit.

After a disastrous visit some time ago we returned to try the Moorcock under its new management, who I understand are actually the owners.

Came across the Moorcock Inn on a tour of the North. We were lucky enough to take part in the 'Sheep Racing'Annual event for charity-which is held in the fields behind the pub. The whole atomosphere was welcoming and the food was excellent and reasonably priced. Service was quick

Lovely bakers and coffee shop, Lattes were really good and the gluten free carrot cake was amazing. When you have coeliac you can’t always find somewhere that provides gluten free especially in small villages but I would definitely recommend Peggotty’s! We’ll be back.

It is not really that great. More batter than fish. Very crowed. A popular place, not really sure why…
