The best restaurants serving British food in East Midlands

I was enjoying a pint outside the Boardwalk in the afternoon on Sunday 27th October 2024 when one of the staff came around clearing the tables. She rather curtly enquired if I was ordering something as this was ‘the cafe area’ and the pub area was ‘over there’. It was a busy afternoon and I couldn’t see any places to sit ‘over there’. There is no signage to indicate the relevant cafe and bar areas – several types of tables are in use outside so the difference wasn’t obvious; it wasn’t evident that there even was a differentiation. Indeed, there were two vacant tables adjacent to mine, so it wasn’t as though I was preventing other customers from sitting down. I abandoned my drink and left the site immediately as I found the incident acutely embarrassing having taken place in front of other customers, and will not be returning. There is a clear need for improvement both in staff training in customer respect and courtesy; and in the signage outside the refreshment areas on the site. Subsequently, I contacted Mercia Marina who forwarded my e-mail to the relevant establishment on-site but they did not even deign to reply. Clearly, they have no interest in customer satisfaction. Mercia Marina needs to take responsibility for all the businesses in situ, as shortcomings in one outlet reflect badly on the reputation of the entire site.

We went in at lunchtime on a Friday off-peak and were the only customers. Staff saw us enter, we went straight to the bar and waited for what felt like an eternity to be served as they went out the back as soon as they saw us coming... Prices were quite expensive. The atmosphere just felt off and awkward, it was not a pleasant experience.

The Three Kings has been decorated and looks very nice. Staff were very friendly and accommodating, could not fault the service. Meal was nice - I have prawn cocktail which was excellent for a starter, however my main gammon, although acceptable, did not come out with any pineapple (perhaps it was because I asked for no egg and it was presumed I did not want the pineapple either?), plenty of fries. Overall a nice meal.

We have been visiting the Green Dragon for many years now and we have always received great service and good food. They have recently updated their menu and the food is great quality as well as good value for money. Would highly recommend and is great for the family

We visited twice whilst on Holiday to watch the Play Off for League two, found the service to be excellent along with the food, the Chicken and Bacon Panini were really nice and very reasonably priced. We are back in August and will definitely visit again.

We visited on a lovely sunny early November late morning. The coffee shop is in an excellent location, opposite a car park -£2 for the day in winter and only c 70 yards from the sea. It is well appointed with plenty of tables and we had a nice window one looking out to the town. We just had a coffee and cake, both of which were very good. The lady suggested we had a half shot latte as we don't like it strong and she even came to check that it was ok which it certainly was. The sandwiches looked good and the food and drinks were very competitively priced. I am amazed at some previous, what I would call nasty reviews. It seems popular with the locals with a nice ambience and we couldn't fault it - we will certainly be back.

Awful, overpriced food, undercooked chips and cold plates.. The menu is quite limited now and the prices are very high for the quality of the food.

Use this place a lot but with the refurbishment comes poor food at high prices. I had a cheese toastie which consisted of two slices of thin bread and a bit of bland cheese as a filling. Nothing else, not even a lettuce leaf and it cost £6.90! The latte was too strong, and spilt down the sides of the cup when being prepared. Disgusted!,

Came her on New Year’s Eve for a drink, was a nice vibe. Nice cozy pub with friendly staff. They were also doing live music.

Not believing all the poor reviews I thought I'd pay a visit for a carvery. Sadly they were correct. After a long wait on the queue to order because only one person was taking orders and also having to make the drinks themselves we approached the carvery which only had a couple of people waiting. The food didn't look too bad on the counter, the mash was so wet it would almost pass as soup and the roasts were practically cremated but the veg didn't look too bad. We got our meal and then went to the gravy which was so thin and watery it appeared to be made with granules. Sadly when we started to eat we realized that a lot of the veg was only lukewarm and the food as a whole was not of the quality you would expect having just paid £11.99 for it, there are far better options available elsewhere.

Used this place for breakfast and coffee at times then decided on Sunday lunch.Lovely informal location in beautiful.surroundings.The meal was lovely priced well.and the staff charming.

Superb food. Certainly, we will visit again. Lots of choice from a large menu. Thank you so much for the birthday surprise. We loved it.

Saltbox Bar for the lauch of Mollis fried chicken kitchen takeover. If you didn't already know, Mollis is known for their ULTIMATE fried chicken on derby road next to Alchemilla by Alex Bond chef Saltbox have teamed up with Mollis for a 3 month kitchen take over in Bolero Square next to the entrance of Motorpoint Arena Nottingham Its available every Friday and Saturday evening from May to July. We chose a couple of chicken burgers. One with Nashville hot oil fried chicken miso ranch, beer pickle, lollo rosso, furikake. The other,Classic southern fried chicken kewpie mayo, pickles, lettuce, cheese sauce. A side of Fries,house seasoning topped with parmesan. Pink fir potato, truffle curd, crispy onions and a roasted garlic mayo sauce. They also serve some amazing chicken wings, either 6 or 12 in two delicous coatings. If you've not managed to make it out of the city to try them before. Theres no excuse now, as you can pop in when you go to a nearby event or you just want some really good chicken in the town. You can even order it to take-away.

Stayed over and precooked, upon arrival was told we had booked the wrong dates, definitely not, then was told the price had changed and to pay in cash only, queue running round for a cash machine. Eventually received a room key and when i say I’d rather have slept floating it’s because it was dire. No bottom sheet on an absolutely filthy mattress, odd bedding, dead moths and flys on the small bed, blocked toilet and apparently the room had been serviced… complained and the bedding was changed. That’s it. Rude bar staff with an aggressive husband. No help what so ever. There was a chair in the hallway with excrement on and someone had just covered it with a cushion! Do not stay here. We weren’t the only ones with problems but no one cared so long as they got the money. Oh and I have photos, too many to post but I’m sending them to environmental health instead.
