Just had a lovely lunch at this beautiful pub. Wonderful choice of both European and Indian food. Very pleasant atmosphere and welcoming service. Highly Recommended.

Had a meal here with some friends last night (06/12/2023). Food and service was great. The restaurant was busy but this didnt impact on the service at all. Will definitely visit again.

We have just got home from an amazing weekend at the marquess. Everything about this place is 1st class. The Indian food is the best we have ever tasted. The Sunday roast outstanding! The staff couldn’t do enough for us. Places to visit around, Uppingham, Rutland water and Stamford. A full weekend. We would definitely recommend staying here. Thank you the Marquess team.

We visited this lovely and cozy restaurant with hotel rooms couple of weeks back. The experience is so positive and we don't have any hesitation in recommending it. The food is so delicious and they have really authentic Indian food there. Remember to ask for the secret menu with all those special Indian dishes. We loved the coconut curry with prawn which is one of the top curry dishes that I have ever had. The services is excellent there and the people are very professional. They keep the restaurant very clean and tidy as well. We also have a good overnight stay there. Bathroom amenities could be an area of improvement though.

This place is incredible, the food is fine dining Indian and it’s really really good! Good value and the staff are top notch. We went on a Monday and didn’t know the restaurant was closed to the public and only for guests in the rooms. Once the staff found out they said - don’t worry we’ll fit you in anyway!

Very pleased to recommend. The food was sumptuous. An ideal location for those, like me, that love Indian cuisine. Do seek it out. If you like your dish to be scorching hot and your mouth left numb once replete, this is perhaps not for you. If however, you appreciate nuanced flavours and superbly cooked lamb and chicken and leave having had a well balanced meal…..Do GO!

The rest of the family ordered standard pub food, fish and chips, gammon and chips, vegetarian burger. I ordered lamb rogan Josh at £17. It didn’t come with rice. A small bowl of curry, no rice. £17. I have never been anywhere that requires you to buy rice separately when ordering a curry. Now don’t get me wrong, it was tasty. Really good. I just expect rice with my curry! The manager wasn’t interested in my complaint. We travelled 40 minutes to eat here for our sons eighteenth birthday celebration but I wish I had taken note of previous recent reviews and stayed away. Overpriced and poor, poor customer service.

We took 4 friends as we had been previously and were delighted with the food, though on this occasion we were very disappointed. We all ordered from the Indian menu, the portion sizes were very underwhelming, served in a small dish, the rice had to ordered separately, so in total approx. £21.00 for a curry with rice, the food was tasty and well cooked, but we did leave still feeling hungry.

We stayed overnight and ate in the restaurant. Very pleasant welcome, we opted for the food off the Indian menu. My husband had an issue with his starter which was quickly rectified, the rest of the meal was lovely and tasty.

We went for a meal at the marques of Exeter in Rutland we were so looking forward as meeting up with sister inlaw celebration of two birthdays. The food order took some time,the drinks were fine. Once our starters came a bit on the small side on the plate. A prawn cocktail on a plate not in a serving large glass. We awaited our main courses, no one checked if we like more drinks. The Indian food arrived To our amazement small ramekin bowls of Lamb 4 -5 pieces Chicken- 4-5 pieces Lamb pitivier Two tiny bowls of rice Two nan breads we ordered again small. We were not impressed at all but as it was a special occasion we did not want to ruin our special evening. Now the big question the price. Each dish £17:00 for the Indian Main. We had one drink each only the bill was £200.00 Also poor service. I will not recommend this place at all over priced and very little food served. I would recommend Sarpeth of Oakham the give good service,great food for good value.

My friend and I stayed for a couple of nights and ate our breakfasts and main dinner here for both days. The food was excellent, full of wonderful flavours that complemented each other, often with a subtle delight which really focused one’s attention on the food and fully enjoy it. The food was excellent, the service superb. The room we stayed in was in need of some “tlc” but still comfortable. My understanding is that the whole business was a fairly recent purchase by the chef owner and special attention is being put into the restaurant and food, building its reputation from here, it’s clear that the improvements are being made bit by bit to all areas of the business, and neither my friend nor I had any complaints about any aspect of our stay. With this in mind I can recommend The Marquess of Exeter to anyone looking for a base to roam Rutland from and a wonderful meal to reward oneself with at the end of the day.

Without a doubt one of the best meals I’ve eaten in a while. My husband who’s not so keen on Indian food also agreed that it was the best meal he eaten of lately. We shared a fish starter and papadum both were delicious. For mains; my butter chicken was excellent and coupled with a pashwari naan it was a combination made in heaven. My husband had a lamb main and he was also singing praise. We highly recommend this place and the ambiance was great and the character of the building makes it a great place. There’s also a pub menu if you’re not sure what to choose from which is great.

Fabulous Indian food - the best I have ever had in the UK. My main course from the daily specials was a King prawn dish served in a coconut! The tastes coming through were ingenious and out of this world. The service was excellent and the surroundings light and airy. Couldn’t recommend highly enough and definitely a favourite if you want an incredible eating experience.

First visit since this village pub has changed hands. I would most certainly highly recommend this Restaurant. My son went online looked at the Indian food menu and promptly booked a table. We were greeted in a warm manner and shown to a table in the front part of the Barr area as the Restaurant was already fully booked.. Our hosts were charming. We made our choices and our food did not disappoint! I chose the Fish Amritsari which was so delicious!, a Moroccan Sweet Water fish, my son chose Mushroom Tikki equally tasty . For his main he choseLamb Saag Wala and I the Chicken Biriyani. Portions were generous and I have to say the food was amazing. There is a Specials Menu of Indian food and a Traditional English Menu. We were very impressed with the experience and remarked on our enjoyable evening the next day.

The Marquis is under new management (as of August) and well worth a visit. We visited on the first night they opened the restaurant post lockdown and both food and service were excellent. We shared white bait to start then had the steak and the Thai prawn salad for our mains. All delicious. It was great to be back!

I organised an afternoon tea to take away so we could celebrate our wedding anniversary. It was perfect. Provided on a large platter, it survived the journey home and there was a great variety with filled rolls, scones, cakes and macaroons. All really tasty and they didn't last long! When you are open again we will come to eat in!

We were in this amazing place with my girlfriend for the Valentine's weekend. The rooms are so nice and cozy. We went for a meal in the restaurant which is great looking with pleasant atmosphere and friendly staff. We were offered a welcome drink it was one of the best cocktail I have ever tried. We visited this pub for a special Valentine dinner last night and are very pleased to report that it was outstanding. Everything had been carefully prepared, beautifully presented and tasted delicious. The staff were attentive without being intrusive. Excellent thank you.

Went for lunch on a Monday. We had the place to ourselves. We dined off the A la carte so we had three courses. The meal was superb. My husband and his brother both had steak. My sister in law and I had duck breast. The service was excellent. There was no rush so we could take our time and chat between courses. It is a lovely pub with plenty of charm. Set in a village with a lot of character. I believe it's under new ownership and I hope they are successful. I will certainly return when next in the area.

After a period of uncertainty due to the change of owner, it is lovely to see this great restaurant return to form. The food is excellent, attentive service and reasonable prices.

I suspect that the pub/restaurant has had a change of personnel and management. We have been many many times over recent years and this last visit was so disappointing.The food was ok'ish (but nowhere near the quality of years gone by), but the service was very very slow. It is a shame as it was a great place to take your dog.I would need to be informed by the management that things would be different if we were to come here again.

10 of us ate in the restaurant last Wednesday evening. The food was delicious and reasonably priced. The new manager,Steven and the waitress, Jolene were brilliant. We all had an excellent time.

The restaurant was central for three couples to meet who had not previously visited this restaurant but who will definitely return. Wow - from start to finish everything and everybody was really excellent. We were made most welcome on arrival from the professionally friendly management and staff who had a touch of respectful humour which makes the experience even more enjoyable. The welcome comments above continued throughout until we departed. The food was excellent, sensibly proportioned and reasonably priced which together with the attentive service with a smile it resulted in six very satisfied customers. Sadly I can only give the overall experience five stars whereas it deserves more.

Although we have been to the beautiful village of Lyddington many times we have never visited the Marquis. We had heard it was expensive. It wasn’t! No more so than most other nice pubs and for the quality of food and service very good value.We came here for lunch today and I can honestly say I have rarely experienced such good service. The 2 staff serving were simply THE best. The food was tasty, unusual and beautifully presented. A very talented chef. I had left some of my main course as I wasn’t keen on the sauce. ( not their fault). I ordered a dessert and was told it was “on the house” to make up for my slight disappointment of the previous course.Lovely log fires and a beautiful centuries old pub. It seems new owners have taken over and I wish them all the best, and compliment them on their staff. We’ll be back.

Under new management and recently decorated, everything led us to expect the same previously high standards. The bar man helpfully advised us on a nice beer, helpfully pointing out the one to avoid, it was starting to go off he said. Why not change the barrel?

Booked last minute, night before, for a 2 night break. Turns out there are new proprietors who only took over the Monday of the same week!!! So keeping this in mind anything negative is not their doing but what was in place from previous owners! We had a junior suite, room 14, clean, warm (wet and cold out). The food is a match for any that we've had in top restaurants in London!! The owner is around/serving constantly. To me there is one thing that frustrated me. We booked this hotel mainly because of the 'open fire' we like to get a book a glass of wine and relax by a fire. The inn has two bar rooms with fires. Only one was lit that had 2 chairs around it. There were no further comfortable, relaxing chairs in that room...it didn't feel welcoming. The other room, again not relaxing. I feel to convince the locals that things have changed the new owners, if they can, need to make the bar/lounge more welcoming and relaxing with softer furnishing. You can have 2 rossette chef but if your surroundings dont match that quality you have a problem on your hands. Early days but I would like to see more locals in next time we visit.

My cousin had booked a table for four on Sat 28th Sept. We were kept waiting at the table for over 20 mins before our order was taken. All in all we were in the restaurant for over two hours and only had two courses. Food was very average. Three of our party had the orange panna cotta and each one was presented at the table on chipped plates. These should be scrapped as a health hazard and should not have been sent out to the diners by the chef and certainly rejected by the waitress. I would not have such crockery in my house and would certainly not expect it in a restaurant.

It was quiet on Tuesday, but we had a birthday to celebrate, so chose to go to the Marquis, as we had enjoyed another meal there recently. The service was terrific, and the food was outstanding. all the dishes was beautiful, with lots of clean plates. We have a vegan in our family, and she was delighted with all her dishes, along with the 3 of us who are big meat eaters, so catered for us all.
