We called in for lunch after completing an event at Rutland Water. The menu was limited, but offered some interesting choices. Unfortunately, the food did not fulfil our expectations and porportion sizes were small meaning my partner and son left hungry. Therefore an expensive meal. The service was adequate, but not overly friendly. Sadly, we will not be returning, despite the great location.

Stayed here overnight, as had a wedding reception just up the road. What an absolute gem of a place. Very friendly staff, who were happy to please. Food fabulous, decor of pub lovely. Room was amazing with a bath in the middle of it. Furnishings and decor so very tasteful and calming. Bonus a band in the garden at night. We will definitely be back . Thank you for a relaxing stay .

Well, this place is just bizarre!! We’re fairly normal people and booked to stay for just one night…. Incredibly, we were met with great hospitality, humour, and helpfulness. WTF are these places coming to. The landlord and hotelier (Simon) had the audacity to introduce us to his local “village” clientele!! We were mortified!! However, these urchins were remarkably hospitable and even allowed us to converse in a somewhat sensible manner. What fun!! Seriously - one of the greatest pubs/restaurants/social clubs/therapy centres/comedy clubs/community hubs/fine food, fine wine, fine beer places I’ve ever experienced. Word of warning though… YOU WILL NOT BE WELCOME IF YOU’RE A C**T!! C**T’s MAY NOT APPLY - YOU CAN C**T OFF!!

This is a gem. Stayed for two nights in this delightful hotel. Could not fault it. Accommodation was spacious and very opulent. Bed was extremely comfortable and towels plush. Beautiful bathroom with large bath and separate shower. Tea and coffee were plentiful and no issues about replenishment. Even a coffee machine! We ate bith breakfast and dinner here. Good size portions, excellent menu choices and all competitively priced. Wonderful ambience created by Simon and Christina. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend and we will definitely return. It's an excellent location for exploring thus beautiful area. Thank you for a wonderful two days.

I booked this place as it was in between Essex and Sheffield and I was meeting up with family to celebrate Mothers Day. The village is very pretty and the Hotel is very traditional in decor. We were met at the bar by the owner who took drinks orders before showing us to our table in the restaurant. The restaurant was lovely and the table was decorated with flowers and candles. The food was served extremely quickly, we had only just sat down and a starter arrived!!!! Our party of five had already pre ordered the food and four of us chose the Kleftico, one person chose the nut roast. Although the food was fresh, hot and tasty I personally thought it was over priced and portions were minimal. £22.50 for kleftico which was served with a few potatoes and a little salad dressing. My wife had a nut roast which came out on a very small plate, the Yorkshire puddings were clearly the frozen ones, not home made and again very sparse with accompanying vegetables, potatoes. £16.50 for the nut roast. A few of us had desserts which were nice and the portions seemed fine, so maybe a mis match? The main courses definitely need to be bigger for the prices charged. We had our table for 2 hours and then had to vacate and move to the bar area which was cosy and comfortable. Overall it was a nice afternoon, just felt like it was overpriced for what we had. Not quite sure on the identity of this place, I like the Greek influence but it all just felt a little muddled.

My partner and I went to the pub for a drink, they didn’t have any cider to cater to my partners gluten-free needs and said they only had G&Ts. A double G&T and a pint of peroni cost us £16.80. Total rip-off for a village pub. Disappointing as it’s the only option in the area.

A really disappointing visit for an anniversary lunch. The atmosphere was very flat, the food mediocre and overpriced. Portion sizes a joke. A salad costs around £16.50 and that gets you a side salad sized serving, literally like a child’s portion. Felt totally ripped off. Service like many have already described.

This pub could have everything going for it, location etc but needs an injection of life as it will be forgotten about and end up closing, such a shame if it does because this place could be 5 star with the right menu and a bit more enthusiasm, it could be a jewel in Rutland but until that happens I would probably avoid for the time being save your money and you will avoid disappointment.

A beautiful looking pub from the outside and the bar area was nicely furnished. We got our drinks at the bar and navigated our way outside to find a table in the sunshine (no lights on down the long, dark, corridor which was a bit eery). It’s a lovely, big garden but not overly child friendly. There is what looks to of once been a tiki type bar that’s now boarded up but the entrance was still open to go in where I could see a green petrol can and saw within easy reach which is a bit off putting/worrying with kids around. Chairs a bit rusty (but comfy enough with a cushion), picnic benches wobbly and a lot of bird poop (I know it’s outside but these didn’t look as though they’d cleaned in a while). We ordered our food at the bar and it came in good time. The food was delicious, Greek is my favourite, slighter larger portions for the price would be better, if I got a few more chips and a pitta it would of been perfect. This pub doesn’t proclaim aimed at families but 2/3 kids meals would be a nice option. Overall a pleasant lunch for my birthday.

We called to book as couldn't get in anywhere else, looked like a lovely place to go but was very disappointed with the food and service, we wanted a carvery but knew it was just a dinner, for the price I thought what we got presented was disgusting and on top of that to be changed extra for the staff service was unacceptable as was only handed a peice of paper for a menu, the beef was cold and hard to cut up, 1 roast potatoe,2 veg and a Yorkshire pudding and gravy like dishwater with bits in for nearly £20 wow, won't be going there again!!!!!

Have a look at the pics before you book to see if the bedroom decor is to your taste; the decor in my room I found very fussy. There was no milk for the tea but the coffee machine was good. The bathroom was huge but very dated. A tap was broken and the bin hadn't been emptied from the previous occupant. The evening meal was adequate but pricey. There was no real ale – odd for a pub. There seemed to be only one person doing everything. (Watch out! I think lots of the pics here are from the previous owner – certainly the real ale pumps have gone and the food is quite different.) Breakfast wasn't included and wasn't available before 8.30am – fine if you're on holiday but absolutely no use if you are passing through.

We visited the Fox & Hounds for one nights stay. One night was enough!!! The rooms were excellent but the service was poor to say the least. We ate in the restaurant and the menu left a lot a lot to be desired, totally overpriced and when the food eventually arrived we were not impressed at all. The breakfast was the worst breakfast we have ever experienced in a hotel. My husbands egg was was dustbin material, it was overcooked with bubbles all over it!!! One small serving of orange juice placed on the table and a slice of toast, no fresh fruit, no cereal, no porridge, no preserves. The price for bed. breakfast and an evening meal was totally extortionate and we can honestly say we would NEVER go back to the Foix and Hounds and would not recommend it to my worst enemy.

The food was not good and was very overpriced. They used to do amazing Sunday roasts but we were informed they have changed owners since the last time we went and it seems they have not been able to hold onto the chef. I had the beef and it was literally like sawing through a tyre. There was a Greek meze that was 3 dry meetballs, a handful of chips and some pitta. These were £17 each plate by the way. A true shame for a beautiful location but I would avoid at all costs in future.

Otherwise adequate Sunday roast was seriously let down by an awful vegetarian option. It was a plant based vegan burger - never have I been served that as part of a roast meal. When I gave feedback, not to get any reduction in cost, but just to let them know why I had left half of it, the response was very disinterested and no apology given for what I consider to be a very lazy and poor choice for a vegetarian.

Went out for what was supposed to be a nice Sunday lunch, but OMG how wrong could I be !!! Firstly we waited nearly an hour for our food, and when it finally arrived the beef was absolutely diabolical it was like chewing a bit of old leather I wouldn,t have given it to my dog, the rest of the lunch wasnt much better with one potatoe cut in half and two bits of carrot and what I can only describe as red sour slop ( which I believe they called red cabbage ) obviously gone off it was awful and a tiny yorkshire pudding all served up with a jug of luke warm gravy !!!! I've never felt so uncomfortable in my life the landlord was so rude and just grunted when we walked in he looked as though he'd just got out of bed and when I went to use the toilet all I could hear was arguing coming from the kitchen, how could such people be in such a beautiful pub !!! We have been visiting this pub for many many years and have seen it go through a few owners. It is such a lovely building and an amazing garden. We had a really lovely server and a great table under the trees in the garden with a bowl of water provided for the dogs. Why underwhelming then? The food was really pretty basic. A really sunny Saturday afternoon and they had fish and chips, sausage and mash, burger and a ceaser salad and that was about it. As nothing on the mains we liked we went for some dishes on the other menu they gave us which was light bites. Firstly the calamari was on both but was £1 more expensive on one of the menus! We said we would have ours from the cheaper menu! We had a selection of small dishes. The teriyaki beef and blue cheese was OK but not a lot of flavour. The duck spring rolls and dim sum were clearly frozen product and had either been over cooked or in old oil as very dark brown. I've had better quality snacks from Aldi! The calamari really needed a sauce and didnt come with any. Really disappointing and not at all cheap. They need to up the quality or drop the prices or perhaps hire a chef and cook real food.

Booked a dinner to support the pub during what has been a such a difficult year. Was absolutely shocked to find that the pandemic government advice and rules were not being followed at all. The staff didn’t always wear face masks and even when they did they sometimes just pulled them down to speak to you. The pub had taken a booking of what appeared to be 12-16 people who turned up early filled the bar, drinking, incredibly loud (meaning we couldn’t even hear each other at the table) and wandering around with no masks. The booking apparently had a table booked for dinner (even though the group was huge) but they were in the bar the entire duration of our dinner booking. The food was basic, generally pre-prepared and heated up. This is a shame as the pub used to have a good chef and the food was a great selling point. That doesn’t appear to be the case anymore. Brie wedges not fully heated through. Some raw turkey in the roast. Yorkshire pudding looked and tasted old and salty - inedible. To make it worse this was £30 per head for the menu - £20 per head would have been more appropriate, but still very generous! The drinks are also horribly overpriced. Left as quickly after dinner as possible, paid the bill as we want the pub to survive. But they need to take a long hard look at themselves. Really hope they do. Won’t be going back anytime soon and hoping we stay well.Absolute shambles.

A slight hitch with being given the Sunday menu on a Friday but in fact it turned out there were only minor differences. The relief we felt when we reached inside on a filthy night left after a second when the surly owner [it turned out] did not look up from the pint he was pulling and grunted us to fill in the track and trace and I said “we actually have a restaurant reservation and you have all of our details” at which someone led us through to the restaurant area still with our coats on. The restaurant was completely empty and we were given a table right by the entrance so we asked for a different table and got one. The menu was low on choice, and the starter was inedibly undercooked [ we had hear someone in the kitchen saying of our starter ‘give it a minute” [in the nicrowave]. We left te two starters and said they were inedible. Cue surly owner who said he was the owner and agreed it was undercooked [should have had 90 seconds !!] and said he would take it off the bill. Te rest of the meal was passable. As we left we had to pay at the bar and surly owner took payment without comment, though his wife in passing said “sorry about the starters”. We left the building wIthout a farewell.

August 2020 Beautiful setting in a hamlet but there is not much to love about the hospitality at The Fox and Hounds under current owners. Rooms are spacious and well decorated. Everything else is terrible. Creased and worn polycotton sheets ( I had to check there really were not unchanged from previous guests) drenched in Lenor or something, room filled with moths, liquid soap I buy from Tesco but with about 1cm left in (streaked, greasy unwashed) bottle. Meal terrible - dirty , photocopied and stapled menus - and total confusion on ordering wine. Proprietor wore his painting trackie bottoms - covered with white paint finger marks - chef at breakfast came to deliver toast to a breakfast table in a greasy old unwashed filthy apron. Ughh! Yapping dog, candles not lit at dinner table, flickering and unlit light bulbs, smell of drains from (uncleaned?) beer pipes. Truly this is run by amateurs. The website pictures look lovely. Don't be fooled. And do check the bill. Mine had 10% service added to the entire bill (jt should just have been added to the inadequate meal). I am prepared to accept this was a mistake - but DO CHECK YOUR BILL! What a shame. This could be a lovely place if run with love and care.

Having looked at the menu and gallery on the website we were looking forward to an elegant country pub with good service and refined food. Location and decor lovely. We were offered a drunk but no wine list available and they seemed unaware of what wines were actually available = not a good start for an inn. Having been told there was a 10-15 minute delay we were then kept waiting for 45 minutes for our table to be ready with no apology. The atmosphere was one of total disorganisation and lack of communication. The menu was entirely different from that on their website with no explanation why - very basic pub grub executed in a mediocre fashion. We were left feeling underwhelmed and disappointed.

It is also good to see locals having a drink here with well stocked gin bar!The surrounding area is close to Rutland water and plenty of walking. I highly recommend the Fox and Hounds Exton, run by a wonderful couple who have a great vision for this community public house, Simon has a great bar presence, makes you feel so welcome and demonstrates what customer service is about. Christina is vibrant and has a clear view on what her customers want which is great... I’m so excited to attend more frequently now it’s in great hands. Friendly welcome and a beautiful old building with fantastic ambience. Unfortunately we were very hungry and after taking our order which was very simple the manager promptly forgot to convey to the kitchen which caused a very considerable delay in delivering our food. The place was not even busy !!That did the steak and wine deal was excellent value at £30.00 with a good bottle of wine included. Steak could have had a bit more garnish on the plate - consisted of steak, thin chips and a small amount of watercress. I would have liked a mushroom or two and a tomato. Service a bit like Fawlty Towers but food excellent quality.

We popped down to the pub for a meal and had a great evening. The fire was roaring, Simon and Christina were very welcoming and the food was terrific. We would highly recommend everyone to try their homemade scotch eggs - delicious!! Loved it and will definitely be back. At last, a local pub who understands the importance of good food, wine and a warm welcome!

Popped in lunch time for a pint but was tempted by the Wednesday special of 2 sirloin steaks and a bottle of wine for £30 . For that money didn’t expect much but Wow what a surprise steaks were cooked to perfection and served with skin on French fries and water cress along with a bottle of Malbec . Will definitely return . Thanks

The food was superb, they’ve retained the chef that worked there before and he is excellent, the food tasty and very well presented. The lamb shoulder shepherds pie was amazing and the wine list was great and we managed to try an awful lot of their gins.

We had booked for Boxing Day lunch about six weeks previously. When we arrived, nobody seemed to know what they were doing, it was farcical to say the least and very embarrassing. The menu was dreadful (basically Sunday roast options) and one basic pasta dish for which they wanted to charge £20! We left after one hour since we still hasn’t ordered any food!

We had booked a table. When we arrived we stood and waited for quite some time before we gained attention. We said we had booked and were told that they wanted the table back by a certain time. The woman behind the bar was flustered and yet there weren't many customers around. We were ushered through to the dining room, where water had already been poured into glasses, we were assured it was fresh. Took our orders for Sunday roasts, when the plates arrived there was not much sign of veg and I expected a serving dish to arrive- not to be! We ordered dessert. The wine list is expensive. When presented with the bill, they had charged twice for the desserts. I had to be quite assertive to get this corrected, especially as I had one scoop of icecream at £1.50 and lady was going to charge £5 as she was regarding it as part of "two course sunday dinner". We left

I invited colleagues to the Fox and Hounds Exton back in August during a very hectic schedule. It had been a while since eating in our local pub, not sure why. Seems I was missing out, the ambience and decor are fantastic and we had a great meal with all my guests raving about the quality of the food and great service. Look forward to dining there again sooner than later.

We were fortunate enough to find this little gem of a hotel before our drive up to Edinburgh. We came across this charming and interesting boutique hotel. Beautiful setting in the middle of Exton village. Our room was stylish and the bed was so comfy.

Four of us went for lunch, we all enjoyed the food, I would describe it as good pub grub, nothing outstanding but well cooked and very tasty. The pub itself is very atmospheric and has a very pretty garden for good weather and it’s in a lovely setting.

We've enjoyed everything: spacious en beautiful decorated room and bathroom. Lovely owner, it was a pleasure talking to her. Dinner was very good, the Watercress Velouté was a joy. We didn't have the heart to refuse scrambled eggs for breakfast, because Rochelle was such a pleasant host (we normally eat just toast). But the eggs were very delicious. Very nice bar with luxury fauteuils and a lot of candles.

We love to stay in village pubs, and we have stayed in many through out the UK. The Fox and Hounds was in a beautiful location. However, the premises had had a major change of staff and we had rather a long time before we could have access to our room. The bar staff had no lemonade, no blended whisky or a Shiraz. Strange! The food was lovely, staff really nice and helpful, room (No 2) brilliant with huge bathroom and views over The Green. We are going back.

Two nights we stayed here and the room was very comfortable and all staff helpful. My problem was the food was naively prepared and underperformed on flavour. Fish and meat was marginally over- cooked and a starter featuring ‘fresh’ beetroot was clearly beetroot in vinegar and was horribly acidic. Our second night was better but breakfasts makes no allowance for anyone not wanting a full English. No yoghurt, fresh fruit selection or croissant.

We went here for a meal as 2 couples. Belle the waitress was absolutely AMAZING. She is an asset to the team. The food should be high end, but the menu was not very exciting and the food was not as good as you expected it to be. Which then meant the price did not seem fair either for the standard of the food.

I’d visited The Fox and Hounds at Exton a couple of times when I lived in Rutland, and it seemed like an ideal place for Sunday lunch following a circular walk from the village through Greetham and back again the weekend before last. The standard of the place had always been very good, and a look online at the menu seemed to suggest things were still on par. The place had got a makeover, so we booked a table for 4 people at the 14.00 sitting.

Was visiting the area for just a night, catching the Dawn Osprey Cruise. Checked out reviews and booked this for dinner on arrival. Arrived at 8pm and was impressed they seemed to know us as we checked in. They said that they were having a bad night and that the earliest we would get served would be 10pm, and that they suggested we went somewhere else.

What a lovely place! We enjoyed an excellent Sunday lunch at the Fox and Hounds and both food and service could not have been nicer. We sat at a large table in the bar and had the roast beef with all the trimmings and some glasses of the excellent red house wine. The atmosphere in the bar area was relaxed and comfortable and afterwards, we enjoyed our coffee on the comfy sofas before going for a long walk in the surrounding countryside.

Life is about creating memories and this village and ‘pub’ will certainly do that in a positive way. Room / bathroom were very well appointed indeed with all the modern day mod cons whilst maintaining its heritage. For me the food didn’t quite hit the mark. You can judge by yourself from the pics. Fish was over cocked and too buttery. But for a night away in a lovely setting - it was very enjoyable. Lovely people and village atmosphere.

Searched online for Dog Friendly Hotels and this came up. I called to reserve a room and found the member of staff taking the call to be very helpful and accommodating. This continued when we turned up and for the duration of our stay. The staff are great, the room was wonderful, very comfortable and rather beautifully decorated and the food was exceptionally good.

We were looking for somewhere to get together, midway between family, and picked this more or less at random. Couldn't have made a better choice. There's a lounge with comfortable sofas while waiting for the others. The food was excellent, we all went for the roast with a fixed price for 2 courses. Between us we covered the range of meats and they were all done perfectly. Desserts were good, though on 2 courses I could have managed a slightly bigger portion. Pots of tea in the lounge after were copious. Given the temperature a fire in the lounge would have been the final touch, but it was warm enough without. Service was very friendly, unobtrusive and efficient. Finding myself surrounded by mirrors in the ladies was a bit disconcerting, but I can see we'll be visiting again.

Had a gorgeous Sunday lunch. Lovely dog friendly pub! Really quaint and atmospheric. Hadn't booked and no tables in the bar as already reserved. Very helpful girl said we could have one of the already reserved tables until 2pm. As it was only 12.45pm that was fine. The roast beef was devine as was the roast pork. Vegatables beautifully cooked, not soggy.

We stayed one night in this beautiful and unique hotel and can’t praise it enough. The room was luxurious & intriguing, beautifully decorated & comfortable. The food was incredible and of great quality but the one thing that stood out was the amazing service! We met one young girl working there who was always there whenever we needed her, nothing was too much for her, so polite & friendly, she was accompanied by a young man who was also excellent at his job, they both worked perfectly together! We travel a lot and have to say this is one of the best hotel experiences we have had, thank you

This place ticked all the boxes for our family to meet half way from London and Yorkshire. Sumptuous but not pretentious, a roaring fire proved the perfect welcome on a wintry day. The bar had a great cosy atmosphere and nothing was too much trouble for Erin and her team. Food and service were equally as impressive as were our spacious rooms and comfy beds. Best night’s sleep I’ve had for ages.

“A royal disaster at the Kings Arms! Took the family out for what we hoped would be a hearty meal and instead got… well, a small sample size of a dinner! The much-anticipated muntjac main came out and looked more like an appetizer, served with all the grandeur of a bite-sized snack. When we politely asked the waitress if this was actually the main course, she snapped back with a cheery ‘Well, maybe you should eat before you come next time!’ Ah, the charm. Things only got weirder when the owner marched over, raised an eyebrow at us like we were some sort of Yelp/TripAdvisor/Google Review mafia, and kindly informed us, ‘You’d better not even think about leaving a review.’ Well, here we are, honoring her request… sort of. So, if you’re into dining experiences where you leave hungrier than you arrived and enjoy being mildly threatened, the Kings Arms is your kind of place!”

The food was fine and of decent quality but nothing special. The service was below par. We weren't permitted to order until 20 minutes after we arrived because of a "big party" (it wasn't) and it was 80 minutes until we got our food from first arrival and one was a cold cheese platter! Ok ish in a Michelin star restaurant but not in Rutland for Sunday lunch. A shame as the location and venue is otherwise charming.
