Went here for a family meal, to say that this cost 5 of us over £400 there were various items that were very disappointing that I feel I must mention. £18 for a single scallop starter in some flavoured cream foam seemed excessive. One person's slow cooked short rib was tough and flavourless masked by toppings, one person's pork ribeye was chewy and dry with a side of extremely dry roasted new potatoes, squid ink pasta fish dish served with an odd green sauce and raw carrot ribbon and the pasta was dry and didn't taste of much, barely any vegetables on any of the dishes, and to top it off waitress tried to put red wine jus sauce onto husband's beef rib after he said SEVERAL times he didn't want it as does not like anything with alcohol in it (yes even if cooked off!) and she didn't seem to want to take no thankyou for an answer. Also his mash provided in a tall sided small bowl with no spoon to get it out with?! Poached pear pudding also disappointing pears were pretty much raw and very hard-so much so that we had to ask for knives for them that were slammed down on the table. Didn't make a fuss about all the lacklustre meals as mothers 70th birthday meal but overall very much style over substance and not worth the price tag. Tables very close together and had people constantly kicking my chair legs as they squeezed past me. Car park and entrance very dark and slippy in places with uneven surfaces

Another wonderful dinner bed & breakfast stay at our favourite pub. The pub and dining areas are in an old and well renovated pub: exposed brick, small but connected rooms and good sized tables. Food is excellent, well beyond standard pub fare. An excellent choice of wines, beers and spirits. Rooms are in a separate building across the road. To our mind they are a little fussy, with antique furniture and mirrors. Superb breakfast capped another lovely treat to ourselves. This is not a cheap option but quality of food, building and excellent service just about justify the cost for a special occasion.

This is a great restaurant. Reviews are justified. We had three courses each today, everything was extremely tasty and well cooked. Really delicious. My mum had chicken liver parfait, a pork roast, and apple mille feuille. I had a prawn and lobster raviolo in a bisque, a chicken risotto, and the parfait. Bread at the start was fresh and warm. Service was friendly and attentive. I was a little worried about the gazebo booking, but they are tent-like, waterproof and had blankets and hot water bottles for colder days. Overall it was a great experience and we will revisit.

Been many times but this was superlative! Eating dinner outside on a balmy evening is a rare treat in the UK. Great “vibe” and excellent service as ever (Victoria). Trout tartare was excellent but the main of short ribs was a good a dish as have had ….anywhere! Apparent.y the trick is to marinade for 36 hours then Slow cook at 36 degrees…. For 36 hours! Worth the trip for this one dish. My photo does not do full justice as then various shredded cabbage etc arrived

We visited the Olive Branch just over a year ago, as we had just moved to the area and our estate agent raved about it. We had a triple birthday celebration, so thought we’d splash out. Sadly, we were extremely disappointed with the service, however the food was excellent. After a year, and as we live so close, we thought we’d give it a second chance. So glad we did, it was like a different restaurant. The food was still very good, but the service was outstanding. Andy, General Manager, sorry if I got your name wrong, was attentive from the minute we walked in. The bar staff were friendly and knowledgeable, the waiting staff were equally friendly and didn’t keep us waiting this time. I can’t say enough what a different experience it was. We live in the next village, so will certainly be visiting again. Thank you.

Our local friends arranged dinner at The Olive Branch and we had a delightful early dinner seated outside on a warm evening under a parasol. The service was top drawer and the food outstanding. My Seatrout Tartare, Laundes lamb and Cheese were all excellent. Others thoroughly enjoyed the Heritage Beetroot starter and the Halibut. What a great find - pity we live so far away!

Very nice meal. Set & á la carte menus to mix & match. I must congratulate the chef on the tastiest short rib of beef I have been lucky enough to savour … the beef reduction alone was superb and the beef was cooked to absolute perfection. My wife had the poached Halibut … all lovely. The desserts, if you can manage, we’re good for sharing. Efficient, professional but friendly service. Nice atmosphere created within a cosy inn. And the outside quirky space was ideal for a pre-dinner appetite. Breakfast was special. Home made muesli, accompanied by fresh fruit, local yogurt and compote. Fresh, locally baked bread and croissant. Traditional cooked breakfast.

Very enjoyable family meal for my Mum’s birthday - Booked a table for 8 outside planning for sunshine but the restaurant called on the day to offer an indoor alternative on a grey day. Food was enjoyed by all from fresh baked bread, through to a very tasty mix of starters and mains with a very enjoyable and quite generous birthday cake which we’d prebooked. Service was warm, friendly and attentive with local drinks available which were great. Cute village where you could have a short walk, Rutland water and Oakham or Stamford not far if you fancied a longer walk.

Stopped by The Olive Branch on a Sunday lunchtime after being in Stamford for the weekend. I used to live in the area and remembered how nice it was and wondered if it had changed. It did not disappoint. The small car park was full but parking round the corner in the idyllic village of Clipsham isn't a drama. The pub itself is stunning, with seating inside and out. There was a good selection of ales wines and spirits behind the bar and even had its own shop where you can purchase some of the produce sold or used in the pub. I really did not expect to get a table on a busy Sunday however the staff were extremely friendly and welcoming and despite being very busy with a lot of tables visibly booked, managed to sort us out a table for three in a very short time while we ordered drinks at the bar. The menu and food that followed was all truly exceptional. The execution and presentation of the dishes were like nothing I have experienced before outside major cities. I'd also like to re-emphasise how accomodating and friendly the restaurant manager and waitresses were. All were extremely talkative and seemed to go out of their way to make conversation rather than the usual 'read from a script' found in other places. It was an amazing book-end to a weekend spent away and both me and my partner have not been able to stop talking about it since getting home. Am sure we will returning soon but will try and be more considerate and pre-book next time ;) Thanks again to all the staff at The Olive Branch.

We stopped off for lunch on our way to London. Although close to the A1, The Olive Branch is a delightful and welcoming local pub, with a great selection of drinks (including good nonalcoholic options), which serves excellent locally-sourced food. Beef and guinea fowl were succulent, with unctuous sauces, and had interesting condiments to add zing. Chips were exemplary - golden and crisp exteriors with soft fluffy centres. Pasta was al dente, in a delicious sauce with excellent and unusual mushrooms. Good kale and cabbage. The coffee is great too - perfect to re-energise for the journey ahead. Attentive but not intrusive service. Attractive, rustic decor, with old chairs and benches softened by cushions. Pretty seating area outside, where dogs are welcome and dog bowls and water are available. Muddy boots are not welcome inside, but slipper-socks are provided for those who need them. The car park is small, but additional parking can be found in the grounds of Beech House (opposite), which is part of the set-up and has rooms for those wishing to stay for the night/for a while.

Our first time for a birthday dinner at The Olive Branch as a gift from the children. Beautiful location and building with great service from all the staff who served us. Unfortunately our experience of the food was disappointing despite really good reviews from family and friends who have eaten here. Our starters were lovely, my wife had the chicken liver parfait and I had the ham hock raviolo. We both chose the slow cooked beef rib for mains but it had an excessive amount of inedible fat on the meat, my wife's portion was about 50% fat which obviously she did not eat and we explained our disappointment to the waitress. Neither of us are experts on meat cuts but we thought that the excess fat would have been trimmed before it was served. The waitress did reduce our bill by £50 as she could see we were disappointed. The dessert was their dark chocolate orange with blood orange sorbet, it was OK but the chocolate shell was very hard and lacking good flavour. Overall we were left disappointed as our expectations were very high and this is not an average price menu. Time will tell if we revisit, there are a lot of other places to try.

I’d heard great things… Positives: lovely service (if a bit pretentious ) Nice beamed building Negatives. Prob okay if you’re not a vegetarian (although my partner said it was average at best) Not a lot of veggie options but offered a vegetarian menu when I said on booking that I didn’t eat meat or fish , I chose the carrot dish for my main - I’m not sure what I was expecting. But I got six full size cooked carrots, some mango drizzle (which didn’t compliment the carrots) on a small bed of greens (just some flavourless kale I believe) I actually couldn’t finish it, cos it was just carrots and lots of them. I think it was around £26 - I mean we chuckled and have made jokes ever since about how cheap carrots are in our local supermarkets! When I commented to the server when we were asked the obligatory “how was your meal” I said that I liked the starter but the vegetarian main was disappointing as was basically a plate of carrots. I was told “the chef does his best” won’t be back .

Absolutely fantastic! First foodie trip of the year was in January and this was to The Olive Branch and it absolutely did not disappoint. A group of us did the dine and stay package so of course we had a couple of drinks upon arrival/pre dinner. As with the main a la carte menu, all locally source choice of ales/lager and some classic cocktails ‘with a local twist’. We sat down to dinner around 7 o’clock and thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Amongst the starters were Sous vide tiger prawns, avocado, little gem and Bloody Mary and chicken and mushroom tortellini with mushroom consommé. For mains, the slow cooked beef rib, smoked mustard, Lincolnshire Poacher, fermented cabbage and pub chips and Gressingham duck breast, roasted baby beetroot with a duck liver tartlet. To finish was pistachio meringue pie with pistachio ice cream, nicely personalised with a birthday acknowledgement and I had the Eccles cake ,Barkham blue and Earl Grey which I get the feeling is a signature pudding. Breakfast in the morning was a similar event, although not on quite the same scale. This started with pub made Granola and choice of fresh fruit and included banana purée with I had with the granola and it was amazing. A choice toast and pastry and then cooked element, Full English, Eggs Benedict etc as well as teas and coffees. All round great cooking and thoroughly enjoyed it. The only minor gripe was that you had to pay a supplement for some menu items which when you’ve around £350 for dinner, bed and breakfast feels a little cheeky.

Very disappointed with the food. Have been aware of the restaurant for many years and this was our first visit, so we were really looking forward to it. The dishes shown on the website look beautiful, and show refined cooking. This, sadly was not what we got. Mains were lacking any real depth of flavour and texture. A shame, its a beautiful place with great ambience and lovely staff. I can only presume the kitchen brigade has changed and the food is lacking because of this. Suggest an update of the website food photos!

My Wife took me here for dinner booked Friday evening. We are local and been a number of times with business clients, friends and foamily. This time the service was very very slow and in fact it took over 1 hour to get the main course out. They were not busy. My wife ordered the beef which arrived COLD !! We complained and both our mains were taken back and returned hotter. I asked if the beef was the same and was assured it had been replaced. WRONG it was the same just been reheated, The guy that took the order and to whom I complained was more interested in spending his time talking to a couple on an adjacent table about his army career and other restaurants that they should visit. After some deliberation this guy decided to remove the mains from the bill which in my opinion was the least he could do as we left most on our plates. The other lady who was serving us came and apologized and it was obvious to see that she was embarrassed. To say we were disappointed is an understatement.

In 2020 we booked to eat and stay just before Christmas, but we all know what happened next. Anyhow when I was thinking what to get hubby for Christmas I decided to book us in overnight for the 7 course taster menu and we’d have the wine flight along with it. Our idea of a belting stay. We were warmly welcomed and asked if we wanted to head over to our room in beech house. However as we’d not had lunch we asked if we could get something to eat. Now the kitchen had closed but we were told they’d be happy to do a cheeseboard (which is exactly what we were both craving) which we ordered with some delicious olives, the South African rose (which I purchased two bottles of) and a pint of butter. We had a lovely chat to the team and whilst afternoon service had wrapped up, we weren’t rushed to head to our room, so an espresso martini later we were shown to our gorgeous room; no.4, Aubergine. The bedroom are utterly beautiful; loose leaf teas, fresh baked cookies, coffee machines and the most amazing olive toiletries. The bed is so comfy and it has a beautiful bathroom with a shower over (very nice) bar and underfloor heating. I would be writing go hours if I took you through the taster menu but the snacks (especially the crispy chicken skin with black garlic mayo), the tortellini and the monkfish were spectacular. Our favourite pairing was the parfait with black sesame crisp paired with plum sake (it’s in the a la carte menu, Honestly try them together! We had a very comfortable sleep and breakfast was delicious. The service was superb, this place is just incredible and I think we’ll be back!

I've enjoyed meals here on three separate occasions and each has been wonderful. First, a private party in the barn where the billiards table was as much a hit as the food, which was delicious and served in good time for the whole party to enjoy together (Pan seared king scallops / Beef Wellington, truffle potato gratin and summer vegetables / some delicious chocolatey dessert). We visited again the following December for a Christmas get-together and the seasonal menu was just as delicious - with melt-in-the-mouth venison. On our last visit my partner and I had the burger, as we wanted something simple. We were delayed by traffic on the A1 but the staff were great, letting us know what was still available so we could order before the kitchen closed for a break and still have a delicious meal. It was lovely, fresh and juicy and the fries and onion rings hot and crispy until the end (sorry, no photo). Really, really nice. And cannot wait to go back.

We had lunch there (the grazing board with bread & butter) & later on went with the tasting menu for dinner with the wine flight. We thoroughly enjoyed the food (which was plentiful!), wine and the room. Breakfast next morning was just as good. The staff were very attentive, friendly & helpful. We even ended up taking home several bottles of wine from their little shop as we had enjoyed them so much during our stay. There was a couple of food items that were not to our taste, but that had nothing to do with the quality, just personal preference. Overall, cannot think of anything negative to say.

Unfortunately, my party & I ordered the £85/head, ‘Tasting Menu’ at the Olive Branch as a festive treat. The word disappointing, does not do it justice… To start, the menus on the table didn’t match, with different foodstuffs & some entirely missing the wine. The spelling was also misleading, with the misuse of singular/plural to describe the courses. In the first instance, being presented with a single piece of pasta (despite the use of the plural Tortellini), as well as the twin scallops described in the singular, as well as the two cold prawns receive later on. The first course, bread from Hambleton bakery & olive butter, was delicious, however it was presented as a whole quarter loaf, unsliced. The second course was the single piece of pasta described as plural, served in a clear Pyrex bowl. It was freshly prepared pasta dough however the texture and flavour suggested it was not actually cooked. The third course was the ‘tiger prawn’. Some of the prawns had not been de-veined, this was also the beginning of the sharp decline of how edible the menu was. The prawns were served with salted gem lettuce & inedible Bloody Mary ice cream (left by the entire table). Size-wise, I have never seen such tiny ‘tiger’ prawns. The fourth course was the venison tartare, although this was edible (mostly due to the increasing hunger of the table), the course carried an awkward smell. At least it was accompanied with a single prawn cracker dusted in black powder as a small solace… The fifth course was the twin scallops, garnished with a completely inedible leaf, the scallops themselves were cooked yet tasteless. The sixth course was the turkey, which I might add we were forced to wait an age for. The turkey itself was flavoursome & tasty. However, it’s accompaniments were not. The hasselback potato tasted like the smell of wet dogs, and the Brussels sprout foam was as inedible as it was unappealing to look at. The sixth course was the stollen pudding, this was thankfully edible & finished by all, mostly however due to hunger, as it was comparable to any supermarket product. The seventh course was the fig terrine. This was disgusting. The amount of gelatine used meant it was nearly rock solid, which, handily, acted as a deterrent for diners to dare experience its awful taste. Its only redeeming feature was the teaspoonful of ice cream that accompanied it, which was almost ruined by the dry talcum powder-like substance that covered the entire dish. The eighth course of tea/coffee with the worlds smallest singular chocolate - did little to clear the taste of the previous courses & unfortunately extended the experience just a little too long to be able to order food elsewhere or even call in at a shop. The entire table was left pseudo shell-shocked from a combination of hunger & the knowledge that they’d parted with £85 for the privilege of very poor food & snail speed kitchen service.

This pub restaurant is definitely living off unwarranted glory as it’s a far cry from what it should / could be . Sadly even after requesting feedback the management didn’t react the way one might have hoped . You were given the chance to redeem yourself…… so here it is … On entering the building we were faced with the toilet floors being moped , not the best introduction! We were then seated at a table with a window seat which was more of a ‘ledge’ really , it was incredibly draughty and uncomfortable with the other 2 in our party sitting in chairs way too low for the height of the table again most uncomfortable, this really must be addressed as I guess you do want your guests to sit for a decent length of time to enjoy your food and drink …..? The window frames and panes really do need attention , the word ‘character’ has been over done here ! Then onto the food …… Well sadly this was woefully inadequate, with a tiny portion of pheasant with a few vegetables dotted around the plate with , I kid you not NO potatoes, requiring a side at extra cost, this on top of £32 ( crazily priced bearing in mind how plentiful & cheap pheasants are in this part of the world ) the men left hungry . Such a shame you don’t appear to value your customers more .m, we won’t be returning.

Having been to the OB several times before, I had high expectations for my most recent visit, for lunch with a friend, but sadly it wasn’t very good, in fact it was mediocre to poor. I made the mistake of ordering the soup, which arrived luke warm and tasted of nothing and then the burger, that was could only be described as nasty, consisting of a mean, undersized and overcooked patty “lost” in an oversized bread roll, with a “sneeze” of melted cheese on it - had the kitchen missed a delivery? It didn’t help that the place was rammed busy and the service was slow, borderline neurotic, the staff seemed unprepared and overwhelmed. All in all it was so unfulfilling an experience that I doubt I’d go back, which is a shame as it used to be so much better - but being located out in the middle of nowhere, I wouldn’t want to drive all that way and risk a repeat performance.

The menu was an inventive take on some classic British pub dishes, to start we opted for a homemade black pudding and cured salmon, both were very well presented and the salmon especially was exquisite. For the mains we had halibut with a bean and pork casserole and a slow cooked beef rib. Both were cooked to perfection and came with an assortment of delicious vegetables and sauces. We have been here several times, sometimes to stay and sometimes just to eat. This was one of the latter. We had a superb lunch for four. Service and food were excellent. The ambiance was sadly spoiled by a table of over-excited women celebrating one of their 50th birthdays. They eventually calmed down, but it made conversation very difficult. Even so, we had a good time.

Truly wonderful! - service, food, care and attention from start to finish. We had a family celebration in the perfect private dining room. Such warm, friendly service, and the food was exquisite. We stayed in Beech House just over the road & slept well & deeply in the comfortable, quiet room, followed by a tip top breakfast & lovely bimble around the village before heading off. It's a shame we don't live nearer - this was a true gem of a discovery & we hope to return! Thank you to all at The Olive Branch!

The food was a true representation of culinary excellence and was better than most top reasturants in London. But set in the quiet tranquil country village. Best of both worlds. The staff were very informative, professional, welcoming, and accommodating.

We dropped in for a quick drink after a walk. Its a nice place....BUT it does not warrant its prices. £9.00 for a pint of Leffe beer, and £8.95 for 175ml of wine. Way too expensive.

Website says there are spots at the bar or bar tables for walk-ins. We stopped by and were clearly not welcome or wanted. Even nicely saying they were booked would've been more welcoming rather than the abrupt manner we experienced. Change your darn website. In addition, take a look at how they respond to some reviews. Says a lot about character.

Tried this recommended gastro pub for lunch on a Thursday. Disappointing. Very slow service. 45 min wait between starter & main course. Too long. Lots of staff front of house with little to do & kitchen obviously very slow. Food beautifully presented & tasty but portions were tiny & ungenerous. We dont need a lot of food but our stomachs were not satisfied. Choice of only 1 white, red or rose wine by the glass. Husband had the white & was underwhelmed. Sadly the proprietor has not been honest in his reply to the above review which is not in the spirit of honesty & purpose of reviews. He a makes a number of false statements 1. We arrived & ordered BEFORE the party of 12 2. We were definitely not warned there would be a delay for our food before we were seated. 3. After waiting 45mins for our 2nd course we had to ask staff how much longer we had to wait. 4. Portions truly are tiny. Be careful before expecting to be satisfied with current serving quantities. We are far from big eaters. An entree & main for 1 person & Soup, bread & caesar salad for the other should be plenty if portions are fair especially for prices charged. The proprietiers suggestion to 'next time, try the OK Diner' in his response doesn't sound suitable for us.

Perfect experience all round! We stayed at the chocolate suite in beech house and it was so comfortable and clean with tasty teas and coffee at our disposal. Very accessible being on the ground floor with a wet room included in the bath room. The food at the olive branch was sublime. We both have coeliac disease and I have allergies to nuts and shellfish, so it was a great surprise to have so much choice on the menu! My first ever steak tartare and sweetbreads and I’m fully convinced by both dishes. Everything was nice and fresh, seasonal, and a clear thought of sustainability. The wine selection by the glass was amazing too, lots of different styles and price ranges for everyone. Finally, that aged beef fat truffle with salt and passionfruit blew my mind, so much flavour. Don’t think I’ll ever have a better petit fours than that!

We were really looking forward to a holiday treat and made our booking in advance prior to our holiday. My friend is local to the area and had heard good things about this place, however this was some time ago now and we were very disappointed with our visit. We felt like an inconvenience on arrival and staff were tired and apathetic, apart from one member of staff informing us of a particular wine choice that night. The server was uninterested when our repsonse to their question upon leaving after I’d asked if it had been a busy day and said they all seemed very tired. The response merely an exasperated “yes” but barely even that. I said our whole experience didn’t feel very special at all but our server seemed uninterested and unresponsive to the fact we hadn’t enjoyed our expensive meal. The starter was excellent but the rest over priced. The lamb was good but not value for money overall. The potato ‘risotto’ was an interesting idea but most definitely not deserving of a place as a main. It was also undercooked. We won’t be back and have reported our experience back to the site where we were staying. Rutland has so many more amazing eateries and restaurants. This experience will mean no recommendations from me. I will be recommending the other establishments we visited with this one being the worst one. Such a shame as a beautiful building and setting. Need to pull their socks up!

Another fantastic lunch at The Wheatsheaf today. All of our starters and main courses had clearly been carefully planned by the chef and were perfectly cooked and presented. A special mention is needed for the steamed Fowey mussels that were as fresh as you would find at a West Country harbourside restaurant. The service was impeccable as ever.
