Absolutely fabulous. Our original accommodation fell through and I booked online 20 minutes before we turned up. The lovely lady was printing out our information and taking us to our room as soon as we got there. Not missing a beat. The room was made up as if they were expecting us and clean as a whistle. Lovely towels and a big comfy bed. We slept well, had a lovely dinner and morning breakfast. Would recommend to anyone.

Under recommendation, we stopped for lunch at the kings arms in Wing, while visiting the Rutland water area. We arrived just after 1:30 under the impression we could catch a late lunch, just to be told that we could only have sandwiches, by a very dismissive server. I requested the soup, which was not offered on the sandwiches menu, to be told that this could not be done. Obviously it’s too much effort to heat up some soup. Eventually when the sandwiches came, they were nice and you definitely get what you pay for. Accompanied with beef dripping fries which were also very nice. However, we felt as if we were a burden on the staff, and not made to feel welcome; which ruins the nice feel of a small country pub.

Although we live nearby and use the King's Arms on a regular basis, we have never before written a review. However, we often take our aged parents-in-law to Sunday luncheon and have been routinely so very impressed that we feel this positive feedback is more than deserved. First, the King's Arms staff could not be more courteous and helpful - for example, by being more than happy so 'split' a meal between my wife's parents (they are both in their 90s), and being so un-fazed in the process. But, crucially, the food is comfortably the best within at least 10 miles of our home (and we have pretty much tried them all, I think). In short, I would commend the King's Arms unreservedly to any visitor - you will get great food prepared by an award-winning chef (and team) coupled with delightful, caring, service.

We stayed at the King's Arms for three nights and ate two breakfasts and two dinners there. As a by the by, our first mini-break in Rutland was something of a revelation - lots to do and a lovely setting. But back to the King's Arms; our accommodation was of a good standard - significantly above "pub B&B;" level. We were a couple in a triple room and the room was a little crowded with furniture, but we managed. Our meals were superb - especially if you're interested in countryside eating/local sourcing/sustainability and so on. Bear in mind that "room only" means exactly that and you need to book breakfast and meals in advance - especially at weekends. As people suggest below, space in the pub is constrained, so it really is more of a restaurant than a drinking establishment. We tried the eels, local boar, fish and so on. Even the breakfast sauce is made on site. They have a commendable approach to food sourcing and that shows through. There are plenty of veggie choices, but I think you have to recognise that this is a pub that has made its name on meat, game and fish - so don't go there if you have a problem with the pub team shooting their own game. So why not five stars then? Well - not every food item worked (but that's to be expected) and there's just a touch of "thou shalt not" about the many chalk and written signs dotted over the place. As people who are likely to commit the offences warned against don't read chalk signs, they seemed a bit counter-productive to us.

We were staying at Wing Hall Campsite next door so booked a table at the Kings Arms for the night we arrived. We received a warm welcome and were seated quickly. We were able to order for the children while we had drinks, so they were fed first. The childrens meals were delicious and the risotto of the day was delicious. The main courses were served quickly and together. The rose veal chop was amazing, I have never had such a lovely piece of veal and the sauce and vegetables were tasty and fresh. Sadly we didn’t have time for pudding as the kids needed to go to bed but we will be back!

We booked dinner at this pub based on a review which stated that it was THE place locally to eat game and the sample menu available online which also listed game. The evening we ate at this pub there was no game on the menu, although the smoked ribs and the calves liver were good. We were also very disappointed with the table (for 5 people plus a dog) which we were given which was separate from the rest of the tables and next to the toilets - we appreciate that dogs are not allowed in the restaurant area but the other tables in the bar area were largely occupied by people who were not eating and therefore had presumably not booked over a week in advance.

We have eaten here many times before and whilst the service and staff are not always the most efficient, the food makes up for it. Last night we went for dinner, for a special occasion and it was by far the worst dinning experience, my husband and i have ever had. We had a table booked for 7pm, we arrived at 6.55pm, we were kept waiting in the bar area for 5 mins (due to the staff being too busy), we did not mind waiting 5 mins, we would not have minded waiting 15 mins, we were in no rush, however after saying they did not have our booking, we were sat at are our table. Following which, we waited a few more minutes for menu's (which again was not a problem as we were out for the evening), however, the landlady, i believe, came over to take our order, approx 2 mins after we received the menus, to which we advised, we were not ready, as we had only just sat down with a menu, she said i will come back. Literally 1 min later, she was at the table again, saying are you ready to order, we politely explained again, we needed more than 3 mins to make a decision, only to be told in these exact words 'i will come back in 1 minute, if you are not ready then, i will have to push back taking your order until 8pm'...we were absolutely shocked, by such rudeness. Firstly, i appreciate you have a small kitchen and that you like to take staggered orders, however if you are too busy to accommodate a table, decline a booking, secondly, if you need an order rushed through, do not leave people waiting in the bar area as you are too busy and then waiting for menus, if you want them to order quickly. Any delay on ordering, was your own fault, not ours, we were not late and we did not delay in looking at the menu. Following this, the entire experience, was nothing short of disappointing. The food was, i am disappointed to say average at best and not up to its usual standard. The only positive, was the other 2 waitresses, who were very nice and very attentive. Should Wing chose to respond to this post, then an apology would be appreciated, given the way we were spoken to, which was completely rude, embarrassing and totally unprofessional. I have sympathy for the situation the landlady was in, with being stressed, however it is completely unacceptable to speak to paying customers in such a rude manner.

I like a pub which does not need a TV or loud music to create a nice atmosphere. Staff were friendly, relaxed but efficient. Good selection of real ales, which were well kept. I liked the emphasis on locally sourced ingredients, and their own smoked products such as trout and eel. The bedrooms were tastefully decorated and spotlessly clean, with nice bathroom accessories and complimentary mineral water each night. Reasonable range of wines including a good number which were priced around the £20-22 range.

We stayed at the Kings Arms for a couple of nights in order to attend a party thrown by friends a couple of miles away. The pub was recommended by a friend who lives in Wing. She said it was the best food in the area and she was right. It was innovative, original and very well conceived and presented. Lots of game but choices for anyone really. Veggies may struggle a little but I suspect the accommodating staff would look after them. Everything seemed to have been either produced by the pub or from a very small group of local specialist suppliers. The cooked breakfast was one of the best I have ever had anywhere. The staff were friendly and attentive, making us very welcome. There were a couple of small challenges regarding plumbing in our room but this was insignificant compared to the pleasure we experienced staying at the Kings Arms.

We try and stay at this pub at least once a year, and hope we don't run out of reasons to visit this part of the world because it's always a delightful experience. We both had a fantastic evening meal, chosen from a inventive, mouth watering menu, were served by friendly staff, and then had a short step to a comfortable room (all are good but would particularly recommend The Granary) for a sound night's sleep and a leisurely breakfast. If you're feeling energetic there are two decent walks from the pub (they have leaflets) including an 8k one to Rutland Water across fields, which I think is thoroughly enjoyable, with panoramic views.

This free house bar and restaurant was the choice of my friends to take me for British Sunday lunch and good choice it was! As we stopped even in the car park I could see the home-grown vegetables and herbs and free range chickens as we walked down t the entrance. The wonderful Rutland Jurassic stone in the building was good to see and great medieval beams inside. We had choice of all the classic Sunday roasts and there was more besides all at reasonable price. I chose beef with Yorkshire pudding...classic -with good portions, it was delicious. A well stocked cellar and different beers give further choice. I couldn't go past trifle for desert - yum! To top it all this inn produces its own fare and I was able to buy black pudding to take away...splendid! A memorable meal in a beautiful English village pub!

After a holiday where we visited Wetherspoons and cafes (most of which I only have praise for), there was real pleasure in sitting luxuriously in leather armchairs, ordering our food over a drink and then being taken to our table. Perfect. The blackboard listing the local sources for food (and welding!) was very revealing, and entertainment was on hand watching staff deal with customers with difficult requests. And the food... Outstanding: so good to have a quality meal. Loved the wild boar and concentrated jus. My wife found a duck dish at last that really pleased her. Pulled pork and spare ribs superb. Even home produced black pudding and brown sauce, not everyone's taste granted but I really liked the recipes. Top line is the food my wife, son and I had was very good (trio of trout, mixed meats & mushrooms for starters, bream & 2x fish & chips for main), but none of us came away really happy. Bar staff were lacklustre, seemed distracted when they took our drinks order and we had to ask twice for the food menus. When we reviewed them we all struggled to make our choices & we are not all fussy eaters, but so much didn't appeal. Order was taken eventually, then we had to ask to go to our table, then wait for the wine we'd ordered. Waiting staff were pleasant but lacked confidence. All of this greatly detracted from overall experience hence just 3 out of 5.

We also had chips rather than new potatoes and they were divine! The trout wasn't a large portion but for lunch it was adequate. Nice decor inside, the place was getting. Busy without being crowded at 12.30. Good value and enjoyable.

After travelling five hours - most of it stuck on the M25 - and with no table reservation, I turned up weary at the Kings Arms during a busy evening. The local fishermen were having their annual fly-tying competition, judged by their wives, and they were all in the restaurant eating first. Nevertheless, I was welcomed by the barman and sat with my pint studying the menu and specials board for just long enough before Kate Goss - wife of chef James and daughter-in-law of proprietor David - breezed alongside to take my order. Very soon after, she led me to my table and the food arrived - a perfect meal. Friendly folk - including fishermen's wives deliberating their choices - kept me entertained with conversation (and I was even given a personal view of the competition exhibits). What a great, refreshing evening. It's a long way from my home in Sussex, but I intend to go back.

I was unsure wether to stay at the Kings arms on a monday because the Restaurant was closed and the was only bar food, but we gave it a go. The walked into the pub to be greeted by, i think the Landlady who after some brief chitchat what time we wanted breakfast because we were the only room breakfasting and she wanted to know what time to get up ! I was stunned ! I just said 8.30 but later, after i'd got over the initial shock we cancelled breakfast. We went to Welland vale garden centre where we lunch the day before. Very nice.

We were passing while heading to another village and saw this pub which looked nice so thought we would stop for dinner and I'm glad we did! The menu was extensive with a lovely specials board. I chose the pheasant which was Devine and my partner had ham egg and chips which was lovely too. The open fire was lovely and made it even cosier. Defiantly worth a visit. Could not fault it :)

Fabulously cooked Sunday lunch, so much food so make sure you go absolutely hungry. Veggies were cooked nice and crunchy and not swimming in butter or sauce. Meat was melt in the mouth.

Very warm welcome in this charming pub, roaring fire and great service. The best curry I have had, packed full of flavour , my husband had game terrine .....both dishes were beautifully presented . James is passionate about his cooking and this really shows and this made it an exceptional pub dinner......I look forward to going back very soon.

We had been here approx 2 years ago and enjoyed a lovely lunch (only drawback was the overflow from a wedding group) on this visit to Rutland we re-discovered the Kings Arms by accident (or rogue satnav!). We were pleased to discover there was still an excellent and varied menu on offer, perished with a drink by a welcome open fire. Next time we will go there intentionally, not by chance.

I love a traditional pub lunch. The King's Arms is very characterful in a pretty village off the south shore of Rutland Water. It offers a warm welcome with a roaring fire and efficient staff. The menu is extensive with local game and traditional dishes with a twist. My friend had the pheasant which was "very good". I chose the fish pie which, sadly, was lacking in chunky fish but did contain prawns and a scallop. Certainly, there was more "pie" than fish and I have eaten a more hearty offering at less expensive restaurants. The veggies were fresh and crisply cooked. The ladies loos are dated with peeling paint and dingy floors and could really benefit from an update. Overall this pub is lovely but my first visit here was rather disappointing for me.

Make sure when you are booking that the restaurant area is open. Otherwise you might get a poky table by the gents loo. The open fire place is very nice, but the dark little area behind it where we and the only other occupied table were seated had rather the atmosphere of a cold, damp sump. This was a Friday night.

My husband and I recently had dinner on a Monday night at the Kings Arms. Unfortunately the full menu is not available on a Monday night but the 'bar menu' was perfectly adequate with just as much care and attention to detail as other nights. We were sat next the gorgeous open fire for pre-dinner drinks and then taken to our table thereafter. Our steak burger and filet steak (daily special) were utterly delicious and my steak cooked to perfection. The crème brulee for dessert was to die for. There is also an extensive international wine list with many wines by the glass. The staff were efficient and matter of fact but seemed to 'warm' towards us as the evening progressed. Gorgeous location and quintessential English gastropub with excellent food to be highly recommended.

I booked a table for 2, and was seated in the bar by the open fire, an incredible meal of black pudding fritters, followed by mutton - 3 ways. All food was amazing, well presented and delicious. Really attentive and friendly service but not at all intrusive. Top notch, can't wait to return, thanks!

We were a party of 7 plus a toddler. 6 out of 7 meals were great however one requested very well done beef and it still came out pink (apparently the chef doesn't do well done meat?). Menu choice was limited but good, enough to please most people. It was a bit overpriced (£48 for two of us, for two courses and two soft drinks) but nice for a one off treat. They provide a high chair but no baby changing facility? The child in our party had to be changed on the back seat of our car.All the above points were not a deal breaker. I loved the open fire and the restaurant is lovely. Both main meal and dessert was very nice. One last thing that annoyed me a little... They expected you to tip! This isn't America and it shouldn't just be expected, especially as the meals weren't cheap by any stretch.I would go back but only on a very special occasion.

Love the fact that local seasonal product is used and their chickens live alongside the car park. Although the menu has some good classic dishes on it it also has some more 'off beat' options. They smoke their own meats on site too, with homemade deli products for sale.Atmosphere good, great range of drinks (including cocktails), full of locals and visitors. So refreshing to walk in to a pub which is true to itself, and has the confidence to rely on the quality of its product rather than its furnishings - my friends will tell you I'll run a mile at pubs who use table cloths in any of their areas for eating - pretentious rubbish which usually hides poor quality food. None of this at the Kings Arms. Only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is that I was disappointed at how little meat (venison) I was served as a main - only a couple of small slices. However my hot crab (mornay style) starter was plenty big enough and gorgeous. This place is a must to try and was worth our 35 minute drive.

We stayed between Christmas and new year for dinner, bed and breakfast. The dinner was superb, very high standard of cooking. The Kings Arms has a fabulous atmosphere, a traditional English pub that does excellent food. The room was a high standard with an outstanding breakfast...Yum!

The Kings Arms shows it's possible to serve really good food, and have very presentable, comfortable rooms too. Dinner last weekend for 18 people was great- all served together, and everyone seemed delighted; only one person felt their steak was overcooked - and I'm sure the restaurant would have fixed that if asked. My venison was beautiful. They clearly take pride in their suppliers, and focus hard on great local ingredients. Breakfast is substantial and very local, involving the pub's own smokery products (yum) and the eggs from hens in the orchard out back. Good coffee too. We had the room called "Damson" (upstairs) - comfy bed, great shower, plenty of space. Yes, there is some noise transmission between downstairs and upstairs. But in our case, it wasn't a problem. I'd like to go back for a weekend away based there, to explore that beautiful county some more; and next time all meals will be in the pub. No need to go elsewhere!

When we ate here last week, the meals were being served in the rather dark and uninviting bar area. Our table was situated close to the toilets, which is a bit off-putting. The menu was reasonable with the usual standard pub fare and the service was good. My meal of ham, eggs & chips was served with a heap of strange green leaves (presumably lettuce, but not appetising or particularly fresh) covering half of the ham. Not sure what the point of that was except maybe to unnecessarily fill the plate up. It was overall an OK evening meal but nothing to recommend it.

A picturesque reminder of the past, the Kings Arms sports comfortable rooms and outstanding, high-quality pub food served in a warm, friendly atmosphere. In addition to rooms in the main building, the inn also has several quaint rooms in what at one time were the stables. Easy access to the Rutland Water Nature Preserve provides the traveler with a number of relaxing sightseeing options.

I make no secret of the fact that I love this place. Today six of us went for Sunday Lunch, and the most striking thing on this visit was the wide choice of dishes on offer beyond Sunday roasts.......the trout pate is to die for, their Colston Basset Stilton in Port & Cognac is something I just had to try......and just look at this seafood platter....
