Seems very quiet and uninviting since the Assistant Manager left to run her own pub. I would travel to her new pub but its 80 miles away! There's no conversation or interaction from staff, no engagement, just a very quiet sterile atmosphere in the bar area. Sure food is great but I visit for a pub experience not restaurant.

Was wanting a venue to host my parents 60th wedding anniversary surprise, I had made several phone calls to various places and The Goat was the only one that didn't charge room hire, but they had to cater, which I was more than happy with, they emailed me several menus, all with great choices on,I plumped for £14.50 per head with upto 40 people attending. We were given the conservatory, a lovely bright, sunny room with plenty of table space and seats, I was more than happy. The buffet was excellent with a great choice of sandwiches, quiche, pork pies and cakes to, all really tasty and good quality food...with the bar next door, it was a great afternoon in a lovely setting.

The Goat is personal service, fantastic food and sublime real ale. The menu is big - deep fried chorizo fries for a side anyone? - and there are specials as well. I had the liver and bacon casserole this time which was fantastic.

Well, service during the meal was good. We were initially shown into the conservatory; it was freezing, not good so was moved to a separate room…which was good. Then the mains, well, I’m afraid it was relatively tasteless….just not worth £18.95. Pudding was good though. Been here a few times before but today was not the best. Wish they had kept the normal menu as well. Real ale excellent.

We had an excellent lunch from the specials board - Barnsley lamb chop and a paprica serloin stake. They were delicious. Food delivery was not immediate but what came convinced me that the delay was because it was fresh cooked. Good range of real ales, friendly service and good pricing for the quality given means I'll be back. There is ample parking and lots of seperate dining areas so you won't feel crouded. There's a fenced play activity area by the parking area.

Very disappointing visit and certainly will not be returning. A previous visit a few years ago was a very different experience and very sad to see such a decline. We visited for Sunday lunch to find a pretty much empty restaurant at peak time. No atmosphere and very dated surroundings. Our starters were ok, nothing special and small but edible. The roast dinners were pretty poor with watery veg and the worst roast potato’s we’ve ever had, however the beef and gravy were nice and the only thing we ate. The kids meal appeared under cooked and whilst they did take back and cook for longer it was very off putting and not eaten. The younger staff there were very pleasant and trying their best but it sadly appears to be a sinking ship. A great location and potential but lacking in so many ways. A perfect project for Gordon Ramsey! Extremely disappointing to spend your hard earned cash on a Sunday dinner to have to go home and cook another meal!

The meal was second rate, I had burger and chips not good my other half had meat pie which was very salty with cooked frozen veg, at least you could chew the meat. Spotted duck was tastless with watered-down custard. My pet hatred is dirty sauce bottles ask three times for a clean one in the end gave up. Not good for £47

Nice and cost in the bar / pub area, restaurant towards the back not used and hence cold in atmosphere Asked the two young employees about the different beers on tab, would have loved to learn more about the wide variety they actually offer Food was ok, nothing great. Liver & bacon was very big portion, while the haddock poached was tasty but a very small portion, Christmas pudding was swimming in a sickly tasty custard … overall an ok experience but would not go again for a meal

We went on Boxing Day for a pre ordered lunch booking. Firstly we were sat in a dinner area on the left as you walk in no one else dining, no atmosphere and cold. One of us was gluten free / celiac disease as per preorder but brought me normal bread so had to remind them, no separate butter for cross contamination of the other dinners we me. Due to being so cold we decided to have our main courses and leave, veg was served in silver servers however the hadn’t drained the water off so was swimming in water. Waitress clearing are starters was clumsy pilling all put at end of table and dropping items of cutlery, over all experience was unfortunately poor. The itemised bill was not easy to understand and no idea if deposit had been deducted, we cancelled too people the very next day of booking and they keep the deposit to. We will not be returning anytime soon.

Well-priced Sunday roast and served quickly. Great beer and cider selection including a good Guinness. Really cosy, welcoming, old-style pub with tons of character, ample parking, a crackling fire and lovely, friendly, attentive bar and waiting staff (not to mention RECENT awards!). My wife and I like to try different pubs wherever we travel and found The Goat right on our doorstep, and would both highly recommend it for its Sunday lunch we had this afternoon and would definitely come back again, the perfect measure of a great pub well deserving of its awards! Decided to stop at The Goat with our three spaniels following a walk at Glinton... it was on our way home, was Peterborough CAMRA Rural Pub of the Year 2022, seems to be independently owned and we had had a great visit several years previously. I'd confirmed via a previous phone call that although dogs weren't allowed in the pub they were welcome in the garden provided they were on leads (perfectly fair enough). I think I'd probably use the term welcome quite loosely in our case... we could enter the large back garden (once we'd confirmed the sign stating 'No Dogs' didn't apply) but we couldn't sit on the nicer and more comfortable patio area so sat on the benches - there was one other couple in the area and we'd have been respectful enough to sit well away from them. Food was lovely and served promptly by a really pleasant and helpful young waiter... tables were clean and garden area neat with a childrens play area for little ones. The menu is concise but there was still sufficient choice, including vegetarian and vegan options - however, we opted for the mezze sharing platter simply to 'get fed and get out' as we both felt inconvenient. I'm sure this little pub is great for many folks but I'll be very reluctant to return simply due to feeling so unwelcomed.

Have been here pre-covid times & always been a huge fan. But went last Saturday afternoon & such a disappointment !! Saturday afternoon & it was empty (said it all really as it’s always been rammed before ), ordered starters & main. Starter was really poor, had the sharing platter, mozzarella sticks were the only edible bit. For main I had burger & chips, chips had clearly been cooked before & then stuck in the fryer again, completely inedible. Burger looked handmade but tasted like very cheap mince, not much seasoning. Husbands ploughman’s was equally grim. Such a shame as this used to be our go to for a bit of lunch, maybe its under new management , I’m not sure ? Staff clearly not interested, didn’t even ask if we enjoyed our meal (maybe the full plates told them that we didn’t), but didn’t care . We won’t be back.

Many reviewers of the Goat have an advantage over me in that it was their first visit. My case is different in that I used to be a regular at the Goat up until a few years ago so my review is a contrast between what the Goat was then and what the Goat is today. In short the Goat used to be exceptional. The food that flowed from their kitchen was well above the quality of what you would be served almost anywhere else, the portions were big, the price was extraordinary value really and the staff were highly trained as well as being welcoming and friendly. Now for the Goat as it was on the evening of 18/12/19. Our party of 25 was placed in the rear part of the Goat where both wall radiators were not working & a small plug in oil filled radiator was futilely trying to heat the space. All of the guests were cold and we had to ask for more heating. A second oil radiator turned up but it only 30 minutes from leaving before I dared to remove my coat and this was more due to the body heat of our 25 guests than the inadequate heating. The delivery of the food was on time but was disorganised to the degree that the staff started to emit visual annoyance which several of our guests detected. It was obvious that this was not a well oiled machine and some of the staff did not seem to be well trained at all which only added to their inability to pull it back and regain control. The saddest part for me however was the food. It used to be faultless. In the past if I had ordered cod and chips at the Goat it was going to be close to the best cod & chips I had tasted anywhere. The greasy lump of batter I received yesterday was therefore a real indicator to me that something has gone terribly wrong. I asked my wife (also a past regular) what she thought just to make sure it wasn't just me and she confirmed that she wouldn't want to eat there again now and that she wished she hadn't waxed lyrical about the place to her guests prior to the event. In the past if I was asked to rate the friendliness of the staff I would have given an unhesitating 4.5 out of 5 (5 being unobtainable). Today I would give them a 2.Then there were other things such as going into the male toilet and seeing an open plastic tupperware catching excess fluids from the urinal waste pipe. Best case would be that it had only started leaking that day but given how easy it is to fix a low pressure waste fitting it shouldn't have been there under any circumstances in my opinion. To add to the ambience of the warm country pub feel at just after 9pm you were treated to the peaceful reverberations of a vacuum cleaner ringing in your ears. Logic suggests to me that given people are paying good money to come and sit in nice surroundings with soft music you might want to wait until they have all left before commencing the industrial activities. In short I would no longer go to the Goat myself now and could therefore not recommend it to others. Perhaps if you don't come with the baggage of knowing what it was however (and other places you have eaten in have not been of a particularly high standard) you might well be satisfied.Given that the Goat had such a big reputation from the standards it previously set it will no doubt be able to trade in its present format for some time before seeing damage to the bottom line but its always sad to see this occur. I can only take a speculative guess that perhaps the Goat is under new management since my last visit and that the chefs they used to have have departed but that is just a guess. I do not know what is going on with it.I am now seeking a new Goat that can offer what the old Goat used to offer.

I popped in for lunch once again. My previous reviews tell of how much I like eating here. I thought I would write about my recent lunch experience so that potential new customers can see why I rate The Goat staff so highly. There was trouble in the air when I walked in exactly at 12 noon, opening time. It could have been a disaster because a staff member had not turned up for work. Poor chef had to work his day off! A large group was about to arrive for lunch! What happened? Did I get my lunch? Oh yes I did, with the customary smile and good service. They don't make a drama out of a crisis here at the Goat. All was well under trying circumstances and Ienjoyed the meal as much as I always do. Thank you once again for looking after me so well with MY USUAL milky latte and delicious prawn cocktail with chips. The manager, Richard must be very proud of his staff. Paul.

I warned my friend that from a previous visit the seafood platter was disappointing. She chose it anyway. The seafood comprised a few prawns, heavily coated in breadcrumbs. Family had travelled down from Sheffield for lunch yesterday and my daughter in law booked us in with you having had a great meal previously. However yesterdays experience was far from great. My step son ordered a panni and I the Frenchie.. His panni was rock solid! Completely burnt. You did however remove this from the bill. I had the best excuse for the reason why my chicken was dry!! I'd ask for crispy bacon! Apparently because I had asked for crispy bacon the chicken and bacon we're cooked at the same time! I'm unsure if the chef is in training but a chicken fillet and a couple of rashers bacon do not need to be cooked for the same length of time even if the bacon was requested crispy. To top it off the bun was burnt, very badly burnt! I just thought it was the best excuse ever, nothing was done about it as I had requested it! So for £13.95 I had a few chips two slices of brie and two rashers of bacon!!! I'm still gobsmacked! Last point, your sauces for steak are extremely over priced at £3.95 for a small jug and the same price as the additional Scampi you can add to your steak is just unacceptable. Will not becoming back! We were the only people in the restaurant, so food should have been tip top. I know nothing will be done about this but I felt others should know.

Me & my partner visited yesterday wanting some good pub food, however unfortunately we didn’t receive this. My partner ordered chicken strips to start - £6, he got 2 very small chicken strips with a spot of bbq sauce! For mains he ordered seafood combo - this was just basically scampi - everything battered, which it does not state on the menu! I had lasagne which was average - much smaller than it used to be, which came with some dry garlic bread. The bill came to just over £40 !!! I only had one soft drink and he had 2 beers, whether it’s changed owners I’m not sure but prices never used to be that much! We didn’t complain at the time as we just wanted to leave as it was very warm in there & the couple behind us was already complaining about the food & the waiters were fairly nice. As usual we hadn’t booked, but, The Goat although busy, welcomed us and made a table available very quickly. I have reviewed this establishment before but credit where credit is due and therefore here we are again. Lovely Staff all pleasant and professional. Excellent choice of ales etc. The food was delicious, excellent in fact. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The deserts also were lovely, I had sponge pudding with custard and it took me back in time, my traditional favourite. Thank you all very much.

Went for drinks and was surprised that there was little choice of different brands (especially vodka), considering other places have invested in many brands to appeal to customers. Quiet place for a Saturday night which meant it was easy to get served. Bar staff friendly and helpful. Toilets clean. Decor dated.

We as a family came for my birthday meal. The food was excellent, and the service right from the word go was brilliant. The two young girls that waited on us were just lovely.

A time warp pub, all patterned carpet and dark furniture, but unfortunately very quiet with no atmosphere on a weekday lunchtime. The specials menu had 2 out of 5 items unavailable. The food was ok, the highlight being the home cooked ham and chips but really nothing special. One of our party ordered liver and bacon but was particularly disappointed with the presentation as it was literally swimming in gravy in a dish, making it really hard to eat.All the sauces were in packets and even the milk for tea was in long life, single use cartons. At least the tables were clean, judging by the gentle aroma of bleach. Disappointed.

Not locals and we needed somewhere to hold a wake. No problems to the Staff at the Goat, nothing was too much trouble, everything ran smoothly and everyone of the family commented on how nice the place was and how friendly the Staff were. Thank you tool, you made a difficult, sad day a little brighter.

Really helpful staff who emailed menu in advance and offered to adapt to gluten free. In the end did not need to do this, as there was something already suitable on menu. Delicious food for all five of our party and huge portions. Friendly and attentive staff. Will return.

We went here for a family Birthday celebration: 3 generations all in one room. Everyone was looked after superbly, from the babies to the grandparents. No one could do enough for us. The food was great, though be warned, the portions are big! Pace yourself if you want to make it to dessert, they are worth it. The bar itself is lovely and cosy and there is a lovely beer garden too.Highly recommended.

Lovely country pub, wish the food was good instead of poor, had a quiche which had really soggy wet pastry and coleslaw which was more like mayonaise than coleslaw, side salad had brown lettuce. pork and apple burger was okOn a plus side nice surroundings, good beer and nice staff

Turned up on Sunday lunch time. Waited at the bar to be ignored by the bar staff first...then to be asked in a roundabout way what were we here for and had we booked!! We said no! Waited further..whilst still being ignored by the bar staff! So no drink purchased!! We were eventually asked if we like a table for 3 (as unfortunately our 2 boys were in the toilet at the time), we said no 5 please and just that sharp intake of breath said it all. Customer service at it's worse. Suffice to say we left and ate elsewhere. Would avoid totally.....

A beautiful pub with great service - I did try to do three and half as it was above average. We both had lasagne which was good, the chips average, coleslaw and salad okay. We both really wanted belly pork which we ordered to then be told they ran out. Would go back as reasonable, local and a nice traditional pub, just need tweaking and no sachets for sauce!!

We recently booked The Goat for large family birthday meals - 11 children and 12 adults. The staff were welcoming, accommodating, professional and so well organised. We were given exclusive use of the conservatory and were able to personalise this for our celebration. The menu was extensive, the food was excellent and plentiful. Julie was amazing and looked after us with great care and sensitivity. Thank you Julie - you made a special occasion very special indeed. We will definitely go back to The Goat and will certainly share our experience with wider friends and family.

We decided to go out for dinner one weekday evening, the person who I went with has strict dietary requirements so he always rings ahead. He spoke to a very helpful chap, who while on the phone asked the chef about alternative dishes and gave lots of options following these dietary requirements. We arrived in the next hour, spoke again with the chap on the phone who was just as friendly and thorough. We were made to feel very welcome. The food was great and the pub cosy with plenty of places to sit inside and outside.

Love this place, we usually visit weekends, afternoon/early evening. Friendly atmosphere. Traditional old English boozer in the historic area of the town, with real fires in the winter. Sports on the telly but not "in your face", there's plenty of nooks and crannies for chatting with mates. Usually about 3 real ales to choose from, plus the expected lagers etc.

Stayed here when visiting friends. As you will see from the photographs, it is very poorly kept. There was a very large spider when we arrived and the person who booked us in was less than friendly. Food was okay although no breakfast was provided. Would not recommend this place at all. Heating also went on the blink so we were brought an electric heater until they could fix the boiler. Money needs to be spent here urgently.

The food and the hospitality were great, the steak was to die for and I would have given it 5 stars, however having been shopping at Tesco and found out the bottle of wine we had was on sale at £8.50, to have been charged £38.00! was just too much over the top. It’s a shame as it has soured the experience.
