The food and the hospitality were great, the steak was to die for and I would have given it 5 stars, however having been shopping at Tesco and found out the bottle of wine we had was on sale at £8.50, to have been charged £38.00! was just too much over the top. It’s a shame as it has soured the experience.

Debut visit to this hidden gem in Grantham - read about it on Tripadvisor - booked for a special pre-Christmas meal to kick start our festive stay at Belton Woods Lodges. We were super-excited and arrived in good time … but a little too early (an hour ahead of time) giving the owner a fright. Suffice to say, it was our fault by setting our phone calendar entry whilst in Mallorca - 1 hour ahead). Caroline was so welcoming, inviting us in to warm by the radiator and setting us up with drinks whilst she busied herself setting up, and calling in her waitress a little early for her shift! The dining room is gorgeous : opulent red walls with mirrors and eclectic artwork, beautiful table settings and subtle lighting - all creating a lovely atmosphere. We ordered a delicious bottle of fruity Chateauneuf du Pape for the table. The menu was mouthwatering and we opted for ‘one of each’ in order to spread the joy. Smoked salmon with a relish of mango, avocado, lime, basil and ginger - melon, grapes and sliced fruit with a lemon and mint syrup. Mains were the Lincoln beef in red wine and Armagnac, apricots and raisin relish, and line caught cod loin with tomatoes, soft boiled egg and tartar sauce. For dessert, we chose to share the chocolate mousse with blackberries and mascarpone. The food was beautifully presented combining some delicious flavours and textures. Surprisingly, we were the sole diners on this festive evening but this did not detract from the experience. Caroline and Jess were lovely hosts, making us feel at home with engaging conversation and keeping our glasses topped up. Harry’s Place is definitely a go-to hot spot if you’re in the area … or travelling in from further afield. Congratulations on continued success, surviving the industry perils throughout the pandemic and maintaining such high standards.

A grand idea. We may have missed the best of it as there were no other diners. No sign of Harry .... a disappointment. Reasonable food; good ingredients and some interesting sauces. Good wine choices. Overall a disappointment .... fine dining prices though certainly not a fine dining experience.

This is an exquisite place. We felt like we had been invited to dinner in a beautiful Georgian house. There was room for just 3 tables so the menu is very brief with 2 choices for each course. We both made the same choices: a selection of fruits in a light lemon syrup dressing for starter, cod in a wonderful sauce with melt in the mouth potatoes dauphinoise and a side salad for main, and I had a divine chocolate mousse with mascarpone and blackberries for dessert. There is always a fish and a meat course apparently so Harry's Place would not suit a vegetarian. The wine list was extensive and included some very good wines by the glass. The service was friendly and efficient. It was a perfect evening. Not cheap but highly recommended for a special treat.

We are only in the area once per annum, but we never miss a visit to see Harry & Caroline and enjoy the fabulous fare on offer. The exclusive hand scribed Al a Carte menu offers just 2 starters, 2 mains and 2 desserts, served at one of the 3 tables to up to the 10-12 covers. The menu listing is dictated by the availability of top quality ingredients and everything on the menu is excellent. We now look forward to our next visit.

A rare and exquisite dining pleasure which has never been equalled as a whole experience in our many years of restaurant eating. Just reading the menu is a trip in itself. The taste buds are already sizzling and preparing for a memorable meal. We have visited several times over a period of many years and always been wowed. We are talking gourmet eating so the menu is small and perfectly formed to ensure choice and balance. We have always raved about the list of wines by the glass which is a treasured guarantee that each delicious course can be complemented if the decision is not to go with a bottle. We started with glasses of champagne and moved on from there. The setting is a very individual take on intimate and it works. A must visit for travellers to Grantham and booking well in advance is recommended. Warm congratulations from us on the consistency of an out of the ordinary level of service as well as quality of food and wine. We'll be back as often as we can. Each visit stands out as a distinctive treat.

We come to Harrys 4/5 times a year. Every time it’s never less than historic. The soups are always mouth watering, the beef the best ever - and The prune and Armagnac Ice cream to die for. Everyone we’ve taken there absolutely loves it. We recently took some Canadian friends there who said it was quintessentially English. I agree. We are foodies and eat in a range of restaurants including 2/3 Michelin star in the Uk and beyond - but Harrys is our favourite in the world. Yes it’s different, quirky, limited menu - but - it’s consistently brilliant and Caroline and Harry wonderful, interesting and good humoured hosts. And I’m picky !!!!

This has been an enormously successful restaurant over a number of years and is mentioned in the Michelin guide for the quality of its food. The experience is enhanced by the feeling that you have been invited to a private dinner party and the dining room is very personal to the owners. I liked the modest sense of theatre about the whole evening and the welcome was warm and service very attentive without being over-bearing. The food is very accomplished and the only small criticism I would have is that if you only offer two main courses then it is unwise to wince if a guest wants the meat cooked to their taste and not the chef's. It was done perfectly as requested. We were being treated to this meal so I cannot say how much per head with wine and aperitif you would have to allow but my suggestion is around £70 a head. If you are expecting a complete knock-out meal at this price then I think you may be disappointed. If you want something slightly unique then I think the cost is reasonable for the high standard you get.

We have been visiting Harry's Place for over twenty years and in that time it has hardly changed and the standard of the food has never been less than first class. The fact that there is normally only a choice of two starters, two mains and two desserts is perhaps a problem for some, but it is the only way to maintain Harry's very high standards in such a small establishment. The food is very seasonal and Harry and Caroline take great care in the sourcing of the best ingredients. On a typical evening midweek there may be only one other table of diners and if you prefer a place that is buzzing with activity and loud music , you might be better off somewhere else. But if you enjoy good food in an atmosphere that is at the same time both calm and tranquil on the one hand and friendly and welcoming on the other, then Harry's Place may be for you.

Harry's Place is a small, intimate dining experience. Run by a married couple, handwritten menus with a choice of two dishes for each course; top quality ingredients and cooking skill grounded in classical French cooking with seasonal British produce. Yes, it's pricey, and the feeling of being in someone's dining room will not be to everyone's taste - so go somewhere else, it works for us!

Harry’s is a great little place, a restaurant in the owner’s own home. Caroline was very welcoming and the dining room interesting and cosy. Ate here 10 years before and it was memorable, but this time all I can say it seems like very good home cooking, rather than fine dining. There are better places out there and better value ones too. I probably won’t dine there again.

Four friends visited for dinner and we received a lovely warm welcome at Harry’s Place. The poached salmon starter was nice but served cold, the lamb main was extremely rare and not to everyone’s liking. Potatoes were ok and there were no vegetables. There was no music and with it being a very small place it felt a little uncomfortable to talk and break the silence. We declined dessert and will not visit again. Visiting the bathroom and walking past the bedroom was not what we expected.

The food was tasty and perfectly cooked: salmon & scallop starter; beef main (my friend had turbot); and we shared chocolate mousse (full up!). All nicely presented, and plenty if it. Good champagne and also a choice of wines (We didn't have wine). Lovely friendly service and a great dining room. I would go back as I loved it. Harry the chef owner came to see us after we had finished; he and his wife were the perfect hosts. A present for a big birthday, money no object. It's a very tastefully laid-out front-room, and we were the only ones there that night, as they had had a busy lunch-time. The service was therefore personal, and impeccable. The menu is brief, two choices for each course; I had the scallops for starter and then the beef. My wife had the soup and the beef. Each dish was fresh, perfectly cooked and well-presented, the wine was excellent and the only observation I would make is that the sweet menu could be a little more adventurous. We've been here many times over the past years, and it's fair to say that the quality of food has always been high - as you would have every right to expect given the menu prices. The wine choice is limited but of good quality: Harry and Caroline choose well.It is a small eating environment - think of a normal dining room. It probably takes no more than 12 covers, and there are times when we have been the only party there. No matter: Caroline is a charming host, and the pre-dinner G&Ts are 'robust'! The canapés are wonderful, and the starters & mains are bursting with flavour and texture. Not modern cuisine, but delicious nonetheless. If you don't like a quiet atmosphere, this place may not suit: however, if you book a table for eight, you can create your own ambience! I know many will say it is too expensive. Some will be nervous about the size and intimacy of the place, and others will be worried that the limited menu will mean that they will not find anything nice to eat. However, despite considering all of these questions, my wife and I went decided to try Harry's Place and had a pleasant experience and ate some memorable food. The room is tiny, it is part of Caroline and Harry's house and on the evening we went all the tables were full, which meant that Caroline, our hostess, had to look after 8 diners. The room itself is nice, but there was too much AA publicity material, in the form of AA red rosette award plates on display for my liking. The hand written menu displayed 2 starters, 2 main courses and 2 puddings and a list of cheese. I would have happily chosen anything but my wife was disappointed because there were ingredients in each dish which she would not normally chose. However, when the food was delivered all was forgiven. The starter and main courses were exceptional and the puddings were nice, but, were not a patch on the rest of the meal. Harry's Place is expensive, and it has taken me a couple of days to work out if it was worth it. £154 is a lot of money for 3 courses 2 glasses of wine and 2 coffees but we enjoyed the evening which included 2 exceptional courses. I have given Harry's Place 4 stars because I could not recommend it to others without reservations, it was good and at present it probably deserves its reputation as one of the best restaurants in Lincolnshire. However, there are a number of up and coming places to eat and I would probably chose one of those ahead of returning to Harry's Place.

I went here for a celebration meal with friends on a weekday evening. Although I had been told about how unique Harry's Place was, it was still a surprise and delight to walk into someone's front room and soak up the welcoming and intimate atmosphere. A bonus was having the place to ourselves - it made the occasion feel really special. The menu is limited but delicious (and what a relief not to choose between endless options) and the wine list thoughtful and well-chosen. Harry's cooking and Caroline's attentive and enthusiastic service were much appreciated by the group. I particularly liked the fact that Caroline was able to tell us exactly where all the produce was from and why they used various suppliers. Chatting to Harry at the end of the meal was also a delight. If I have any criticism, it is that my advance request for low-carb just meant that I didn't eat certain things such the bread, potatoes and pudding rather than being offered a viable alternative. However, I suspect that if I had sent a clearer message about what I can eat rather than what I can't, it would have been a different outcome. Having said that, the cheeseboard was magnificent so a lack of dessert didn't really matter. It's not cheap but probably worth it.

The restaurant only has 3 tables and all the menus are handwritten based on fresh ingredients sourced that day. The husband (chef) and wife (waitress) duo are amazing at making you feel welcome, providing the best service and food that we normally only dream of. The menu is usually two starters, two mains and two deserts with cheese an additional option. I had tomato soup as a starter. Now who is brave enough in a Michelin restaurant to serve tomato soup? There is nowhere to hide in something so apparently simple, let me tell you that was not only the best tomato soup I have ever had it was the best soup ever. A main of salt marsh lamb and a creme brûlée mousse to end. We are already booking our return.

I discovered this jewel many years ago and make a point of visiting every time I am in the area. The intimate dining room and limited number of covers makes this restaurant an ideal venue for a romantic meal. Caroline, front of house, is very attentive, anticipating your needs whilst maintaining a discrete distance when appropriate. The style of the food has changed little over the years but Harry not only cooks it to perfection he is constantly experimenting with new flavour combinations and techniques to add subtle, but also exhilarating twists to proven dishes. On our latest visit on Valentine's Day I was delighted to learn that the restaurant had earned it's, "8th Best restaurant in Britain" award. Excellent, well done and well deserved. Harry & Caroline, keep up the good work and we will see you again soon.

This restaurant was ranked 8th by The Sunday Times (in association with Harden's) in last year's 'Top 100 Restaurants -the best places to eat in Britain'.There are only three tables in the whole restaurant and Harry and Caroline have run the entire place themselves for the past 27 years. Harry cooks in the kitchen and Caroline is front of house. When you go into the restaurant, you are actually going into their home and the restaurant is the front room of their home. There are only two choices for each course but everything is cooked to perfection with all the ingredients finely balance. The menu changes frequently depending on what is market fresh. The wine list consists of only Old World wines so the only one thing I would suggest is to introduce some New Worlds. The service was excellent, friendly but completely unobtrusive and totally professional. Some young people may miss the buzz of a busy restaurant with loud music, but our party enjoyed the entire dining experience thoroughly and will certainly return.

I've lived near to Harry's Place for about 20 years and never been, so as soon as I got the opportunity to celebrate a dear friend's birthday, I jumped at the chance to pay a visit. The venue is intimate, wonderfully decorated and set up. Caroline, who looked after front of house was a great hostess, looking after our every need and keeping us company and in conversation just the right amount of time. The food was prepared to perfection. While looking at the hand-written menu, we we given vol au vents with Fetta cheese, basil, olive and truffle oil, which was so very tasty. Both myself & my guest had Celeriac soup for a starter, from a choice of 2 starters. It was absolutely perfect and a great start to our evening. I opted for a Lamb dish served with Almgnac sauce while my guest chose Monk fish. They came out freshly cooked and were so tasty. The roast potatoes that accompanied them were without doubt, the best I have ever tasted. Finally, my friend had a caramel mousse, which she said was the best part of the entire meal, while I had a stunning rhubarb ice cream. All this was washed down with a fantastic white wine. All in all, the food was faultless. So tasty and filling. At £151 for the whole meal, it was a bargain.I can't wait to experience Harry's Place again.

I was dying to give this place a good review. I love the concept and had heard great things, so couldn't wait to go. The venue is great and the welcome warm and lovely. The letdown I'm afraid is a dated style of cooking, and a price pitch that's out of justification for delivery. The ingredients were top notch so I understand the price point, but in opinion mucked about with too much, and I'm afraid too much sugar in nearly everything. The chef obviously has skill and came and greeted us warmly, but maybe was having an off night.Wine list was good but a touch overpriced and missing interesting wines at a lower price. We went high on the price point and I think the end product missed the mark again. In short lovely place, and idea, but maybe a touch dated and out of touch for a young and very foodie crowd.

We visit Grantham once a year and our meal at Harry's Place is always the highlight of our trip. From the moment Caroline welcomes us we feel right at home and Harry's cooking is spectacular. My dietary requirements are never a problem and everything we have ever eaten has been delicious and memorable. We book from year to year to guarantee our table - I would go more often if the restaurant were nearer to our home but the fact that it is not makes the anticipation even greater. A wonderful restaurant and Caroline and Harry make a fantastic team.

We recently visited the restaurant and received a lovely welcome but we're disappointed that there was only us as a table for 2 and another table of 5 people who spoke very loudly to each other and whose conversation was difficult to miss. I would like to have seen one more choice of mains as my husband had grouse and I ordered fish which was so very tiny I had finished my meal very much before he had, I believe that I did not get value for money for a £39.50 main course which was about 3 inches square. Dessert was good but the thing that stood out for us was the quality of the cheese, this was excellent. Wine was reasonable for a place of this type, £30 ish pounds a bottle which we expected to pay. I would like to have given the rating as Good not Average or Very Good but there is no facility for this. Maybe the restaurant does not need more clients as they enjoy a clientele who like and need the privacy that harrys place offers.

We went to Harry's Place on recommendation from a few people in our village (Sapperton). We didn't quite know what to expect....and bearing in mind we were hugely disappointed with Hambleton Hall last year....We very much enjoyed our evening. The food was excellent. The menu - although only a choice of two dishes for each course was excellent. I had the Celeriac soup, lamb (I am sure just calling it 'lamb' under sells it), and rhubarb soufflé (to die for). Richard had the same ....with the exception of a Cherry Brandy jelly...All was excellent - accompanied by great choice of wines - either by the bottle or glass. I would recommend it without reservation. You just need to be mindful that the restaurant is a very small space....so you do kind of know your other guests rather well.......

Having visited basically yearly for many years - we were not dissappointed. Main meat course was lanb - excellent. I would agree with the info given by the Jones' review below; it is important to understand that there are only two choices per course, meat or fish for mains; the maximum number of diners is ten. To my mind, Harry's dishes have strong flavours, which I love. Thanks to Harry & his wife for another great mealLook forward to next year!

I can see why this dining experience would not suit everybody. 3 tables with just 10 covers in a private home with chef at the hotplate and wife serving. It's potentially a little intense. However, it really worked for us. Good friends said they had been and loved it. They wanted to return and invited us to join. We were equally impressed. The menu is limited with just two choices at each course, but what arrived on the plate was well-presented and delicious. I cannot fault my Sauteed Chicken Livers followed by Filleted Loin of Spring Lamb - both accompanied by excellent wines we invited the proprietor to select. 7.30 was suddenly 10pm as we headed into an impressive cheese selection with dessert wine. Conversation flowed though out the evening. All tables seemed relaxed and satisfied. Our table certainly was. The bill comes (as does the menu and wine list) hand-written. Its not cheap. Budget about £100 a head. It is however worth every penny. On leaving our only question was who would we take next.

Celebrating my brother in law's 80th birthday in a wonderful setting with exceptional food. However, I felt disappointed that even though the owners knew that it was luncheon to celebrate a special birthday, no attempts were made to take an extra step to signify the occasion. He was verbally wished ' Happy Birthday', and the grand children were introduced to us - however a special touch could have been added to make the occasion memorable. Sadly, it did not happen.

Anyone who has the courage to run a high-class restaruant with just three tables gets a head start from me and Harry's Place was a delightful experience. It was a Monday night, so we had the restaurant to ourselves, which was slightly strange, but the meal was lovely. The service was excellent and charming, and the food was of a very high standard. The main course of roast lamb was good, but the apricot souffle was truly superb--and it is not all that often when the chef comes out of the kitchen and you can discuss the meal with him because you are the only guests. All in all, I hope Harry keeps up his and his wife's excellent adventure.

My partner and I visited Harry's Place in January 2013. We were the only guests for lunch. The cooking was exceptionally good and refreshingly unpretentious. I remember reading online somewhere that Harry's pet hate is "little cubes of unrendered pork fat", and there was certainly nothing like that here. I remember cream of celeriac soup being unexpectedly delicious, as was a main course of Grey Partridge. At 145 pounds for two this wasn't cheap, but in my opinion it was worth three visits to typical chain-run gastropub. We still have the handwritten menu cards as souvenirs.

...for quite a long time and was able to go for lunch recently. The dining room is small, simply decorated and quite charming, accommodating just 3 tables and 10 covers. Caroline looked after us extremely well and Harry cooked exquisite food, full of flavours, using a wide variety of herbs to embellish the dishes. He came and chatted after the meal, not something you experience in larger restaurants. The only downside was the price. We're used to paying good prices for good food; we thought £39.50 for main courses at lunchtime a little steep. We still went away happy, but £10 less for a main course would tempt us back.

We have dined at Harry's Place numerous times and we can safely say it is wonderful. The restaurant only has 3 tables, seating usually 10 people maximum, so the setting is very intimate and unique. Since it is a small restaurant and a single chef the menu is limited (2 starters (1 is a soup), 2 mains (usually 1 is seafood and the other a meat of some form), and 2 puddings (or a massive cheese plate)) but everything is prepared and cooked fresh by Harry himself. It is amazing he is able to produce such intricate combination of flavours, consistently executed and perfectly presented food by himself in the kitchen. I could never cook a dinner party for 10 and do remotely the same thing. To start, Harry always gives a complementary plate of wonderful little warm puff pastry, tomato, feta and basil canapés. We would describe his food as mostly British with French technique and flair. Harry's wife, Caroline, greats guests, takes orders, serves tables, never allows a drink glass go empty, and handwrites your order in impeccable calligraphy. She really tries to balance attentive but discreet service, which can be difficult in such a small space (hard to observe unnoticed). It is expensive, but one of the best restaurants in the East Midlands for a special occasion.

My husband took me there last night as a birthday treat. What a treat it was. Caroline was so very attentive without being intrusive. The food was beautiful and very well presented. Yes, maybe a bit pricy but then you are paying for proper food not something shoved through a microwave! At the end of the evening Harry came through. It was lovely to be able to compliment the chef. When we were waiting for our taxi - Caroline and Harry seemed very comfortable chatting with us. Would we go again? - yes. By the way, we are not 'upper class' just ordinary working class!

What a super evening we spent at Harry's place. A warm and friendly welcome as we entered Caroline and Harry's beautiful home set the scene for a wonderful evening. Firstly, I am astounded at some of the negative reviews - I wonder whether these people were dining in the same place! The dining room is beautifully lit and is warm and welcoming. Although only accommodating 3 tables and up to 10 diners it still feels spacious and a romantic evening can still be had. Caroline was attentive, extremely informative and certainly not intrusive. The pace and nature of the service was perfect and most definitely NOT intrusive. The menu is not extensive but this is part of the charm of the place. It still took some choosing and all dishes are described most beautifully on handwritten menus. What is most striking is the powerful combinations of flavours - lamb with tarragon is genius, along with stunning combinations of tomato, caper and olive. I didn't want each course to come to an end. My partner and I decided to share a cheese plate after dessert and far from choosing a selection of cheeses from the 10 on the menu, (which would normally be the form) we had a fabulous plate of all 10. The meal was rounded of with coffee brought to us by Harry himself. Having never been before we had many questions which Harry and Caroline answered generously and with such warmth - it really did feel like we were chatting with friends. And in direct response to one of the reviews - I am not "haughty, holier than thou, snobby type........." - a meal out like this is a real treat and not something we can do regularly and I am an ordinary person living in a modest ex-council semi on a modest income. But I love good food and wine and would rather not eat out for a month or two in order to go somewhere like this every so often. Good taste as nothing to do with being snobby - and if you know good food and have good taste you will LOVE Harry's Place. I can't wait to go back. But go back I will!!! Thank you Harry and Caroline for a lovely evening and a meal to remember.

Very unimpressed. Echoing another review, it was as if the 'lady' in the front of house was watching us like a hawk.We are not regular 'upper class' Michelin star restaurant customers, (we went as a treat), and goodness weren't we made to feel like we weren't good enough. We found the woman serving to be extremely condescending, rude, and arrogant. When the chef came out of the kitchen, he was shortly preceded by his body odour. An unshaven, unkempt looking man with extremely questionable personal hygiene (a toothbrush wouldn't go amiss), which made us feel slightly queasy over what we may have digested along with the food. He too 'eagle-eyed' us, and clearly found us unsatisfactory, as not even a quick 'hello' was offered. The food choice was limited, and the quality.. not bad but definitely not what I would have expected to pay that amount of money for. The drink prices were a little less steep, which was useful as we certainly needed the alcohol to wash away the bitter taste of a bad experience. If you are a haughty, holier-than-thou, snobby type with low expectations on health and hygiene, then this is the place for you.For everyone else, better food and service is received in a wine bar in the nearby Newark's market square, which we would recommend over this place any day.

We have visited Harry's Place for several years now and we have never failed to be impressed. The restaurant is very small (just three tables!) but this merely adds to the charm and you feel you are dining with good friends rather than just being a customer. The operation is a husband and wife team with chef Harry Hallam manning the stoves and Caroline overseeing front of house. The menu is comprised of just two choices to each course, (although, with advance notice, they are happy to cater for specific needs) and is hand written daily (beautifully it must be said...) a real change from the run of the mill menu format! The food is simply divine, quality ingredients cooked with real skill and flair, flavour combinations that sometimes look challenging on paper, work beautifully and the dedication to seasonal availability is to be commended. The provenance of the ingredients is known, and it certainly shows.......! The cheeseboard selection is particularly rewarding. The wine list runs to a single page, but has all the classics covered at fair prices.Portions are perect for our (somewhat large) appetites, and we always leave filling suitably full, but never bloated.....We are always made to feel very welcome, and in this day and age of the the TV cook, there are not many places left where the chef will take the trouble to come out and say hello after your meal and be happy to talk about the food. The service is attentive without being overbearing and unwaveringly professional. Both the food and the restaurant itself are a model of consistency. All in all a wonderful experience for that "special meal" in an elegant setting......... Highly recommended!

Our second visit to Harry's Place and we can't wait for the next! Yes, the main course is £39.50, but the quality, presentation and taste is exquisite, You eat in a beautiful, relaxing room with only 10 covers. Where else could you enjoy this type of intimate experience outside a chef's table in a top London restaurant with a minimum price of £100 per person. The service is exceptional and warmed canapes are delicious. We are a family including two teenage girls and we dined on 1st November 2013 as a special treat on our last night in Grantham. We all loved the experience. Having a choice of 2 options for each course is refreshing. The produce is local, perfectly fresh and perfectly cooked. Starters are priced from £9, a wonderful apple souffle which was to die for is £8 and wines range from £20 - £50. Tea was £1.20, cordial and sparkling water was £1.50 and I will mention the orange juice was perfectly squeezed without bits, totally fresh by Harry...worth every penny! There is no rush, only one sitting, and the food will take as long as Harry takes to cook it. Even the bill is special and He appears to meet everyone at the end of the meal with a wonderfully charming manner, totally disarming. If you are visiting Lincolnshire and are a discerning diner, looking for something a bit more refined and different, try Harry's Place.

This is a weird restaurant. It felt our arrival was watched, as when we got to the entrance gate the Owner suddenly opened the door - unexpected & spooky!! We came for just main meal - had to 'gulp' at menu pricing £39.99 for beef or cod gourmet. Owner's Wife had eyes like a hawk, didn't lay-off our table i.e she even knew I had a glass of water passed to me. A bit over-bearing Waitress service. Felt like the large mirrors on walls, were in fact one-way looking-glass. Felt frightened to breathe in case Waitress pounced on us. Rip-off in every sense of word. No way can this be given the highest rating Daily Mail-AA Award rosette. Just no way, but it has in Sept 2013. Did the £5.00 glass of orange taste extra-ordinary? By heck it didn't! The only warm feeling came from the red painted walls, all the rest over-rated and a disappointment.

The great service started here with the telephone call I made to book the restaurant. Both Harry and his wife, Caroline, were very helpful and enthusiastic with helping me to make the booking and very understanding about confirming numbers etc. It's fair to say I began to really look forward to this from that moment.Harry's Place is a small 10 seater restaurant about 2 miles from the town centre. Understandably, it gets booked up quite well in advance so a reservation is essential. A small deposit secures your booking, which is more than fair considering it is a small operation. If you book for 8 people or more then you get the whole place to your self - a great private dining experience. We had initially booked for 8, and changed to 10 a couple of weeks before; this was no problem at all. There are two choices on each stage of the menu. This seems reasonable as a small restaurant using fresh ingredients does not want to incur lots of wastage. You can get to know what is on the menu a couple of days before if you call - but you may want to remain surprised! None of us had any problem finding something to eat and there were many empty plates! They are also happy to discuss the fantastic wine menu with you beforehand - a great selection of wines at quite reasonable prices. The food was excellent; perfectly prepared and presented, high quality and tasted great! Caroline played the perfect hostess all night, ensuring everyone's needs were met without being intrusive. The very pleasant Harry then came out and spoke to us afterwards. It's not particularly cheap, but it shouldn't be, and the prices are a reasonable reflection of what you are getting. It really was such a perfect experience and I would recommend it to anyone. We will undoubtedly visit again some time in the future.

I have visited Harry's Place several times over the years and I would whole hearted recommend it. But there are several caveats:1. It's a small restaurant, ten covers max, so booking in advance is essential.2. It's a small menu, a choice of two starters, two mains, two desserts and a cheese board. So if you've any special dietary requirements you really need to let them know in advance.3. It is, by a lot of people's definition, expensive. The share of the bill for two of us, including drinks came to £160, which for me puts it into the category of an occasional, special, treat. But given the quality I feel that this is good value. So those are the caveats, but overall I found the food to be magnificent, the wine list superb and the atmosphere wonderful.

Firstly having visited over several years - I am at a loss to understand why this restaurant lost its Michelin star approx some two years ago.Secondly, it is important to understand that this is very small restaurant with up to 10 covers/ guests. Therefore the menu (a la carte) is limited to a choice of two dishes per course - if you have issues I suggest you raise them at the time of booking. This is not your average restaurant - but I would recommend it - standards are high and depending on your view - you may think it is expensive. We had young deer as a main course & it was beautiful. It is a rather special cosy little place - Harry cooking & his wife waiting on the tables. Enjoy

Meal was good but not really special and I think the pricing really requires special. From reading other reviews, it sounds very much as if the menu is often rather similar as, like many other reviewers, we had options including soup & deer. We did understand that, in such a small venue, it probably is necessary to operate with a restricted menu choice but it just didn't seem to have the edge we were expecting. We stood inside the entrance for over 5 minutes before we were greeted. It's not the most comfortable arrangement being able to hear everyone's conversations and maybe a little background music could help the ambience as it's a nice enough room. When we ordered our coffee we were expecting some ultra creative little pastry or chocolate but it was not forthcoming and I think that summed up the evening for us really - it wasn't that there was anything seriously wrong but it just wasn't as good as we had expected.

Love this place, we usually visit weekends, afternoon/early evening. Friendly atmosphere. Traditional old English boozer in the historic area of the town, with real fires in the winter. Sports on the telly but not "in your face", there's plenty of nooks and crannies for chatting with mates. Usually about 3 real ales to choose from, plus the expected lagers etc.

Seems very quiet and uninviting since the Assistant Manager left to run her own pub. I would travel to her new pub but its 80 miles away! There's no conversation or interaction from staff, no engagement, just a very quiet sterile atmosphere in the bar area. Sure food is great but I visit for a pub experience not restaurant.

Stayed here when visiting friends. As you will see from the photographs, it is very poorly kept. There was a very large spider when we arrived and the person who booked us in was less than friendly. Food was okay although no breakfast was provided. Would not recommend this place at all. Heating also went on the blink so we were brought an electric heater until they could fix the boiler. Money needs to be spent here urgently.
