Hadn't booked, turned up for Saturday lunch. Luke warm welcome from girl behind bar. Pub very clean nicely decorated, but lacked any atmosphere. As we were seated near the entrance it wasn't very warm inside. Food decidedly average, no call back or asked if we enjoyed on leaving. Slight maybe pedantic gripes, the constant scrape of chairs and stools on the quarry tiled floor got a bit annoying, ( pads are available!) Dress code for bar staff, appreciate i am not walking into the Ritz, but it probably wouldn't be acceptable to the management if a guy was behind the bar in a vest top, so why is it acceptable for a girl to dress that way, doesn't set a great standard. Slightly snobby maybe, like I say not walking into the Ritz, but standards do matter.

I’ve given this two stars because the young waitstaff were kind and courteous. Otherwise it would have been one star. I set up this account specifically for this review. I don’t normally do reviews. Second sitting of Christmas lunch. We arrived early, we were seated promptly and given drinks. Then the food arrived. The soup was tepid. The starters (ham hock or salmon pate) were average. The mains were like motorway service station / hospital canteen food (which is perhaps unfair to some hospitals)… massively overcooked vegetables (possibly sitting around since the first serving), again tepid, we left half of it and I hate leaving food. The nut roast was the worse I’ve ever seen. It’s supposed to be a chunky loaf type of thing. It was a disaster, sprinkled all over the plate, dry, flavourless. Christmas pudding with piping hot Devon custard came with lukewarm custard which could have come from the Outer Hebrides. We never got our mince pies. It was Christmas, we were going to leave without saying anything assuming it was an off day. But the kind waitstaff asked for our feedback, I guess seeing all was not right with our guest experience. We gave our honest feedback which was kindly relayed to the kitchen. The feedback response from the kitchen was relayed by the poor bemused-looking waitstaff was (hold your breath) “nobody else has complained”. The payment desk was right outside the kitchen on the way out. No word from the chef themselves or the manager. £420 for three adults and a child. Horrendous.

If I could give a 5 for food and a 2 for service I would. Heard excellent things about this pub/restaurant. So for a change we thought as a family we would give it a go. Seated promptly and drinks order taken immediately. We all ordered, we were then told that it would take 35-40 minutes, absolutely no problem, some of the group decided to have a starter due to the wait. Starters duly ordered, one of the party decided to change his main as he was having a starter. This was not possible?? Ok that’s fine. Starters arrived, everyone enjoyed. Plates removed quickly and main courses were served. At that point we didn’t see the waitress again. We had to go to the bar to get some drinks (no hardship) drinks were delivered and quite clearly we had all finished our meals, but they were not taken away. 20 mins later we asked for the dessert menu, still having not seen a member of staff. (Well actually we had the joys of watching the young waitress flirting with her boyfriend, or potential boyfriend rather than taking any notice what was happening in the restaurant) after waiting for so long we decided against the dessert, paid the bill and left.

Just wasted 30 pounds on two plates of bright red, tasteless, thick gloop with thick battered prawns with stodgy yeung chow fried rice. Will never use again. Also teach your young workers some telephone manners.

We got take away fish and chips for 2 people. We live in Heacham and didn't know it had changed hands. The chips were inedible and as for fish, it was miniscule, mostly mere batter. We then decided to get a large burger for each of us. The bun was stale and the burgers were black. They must have been fried at least 5 times over. It's a lot of money for pensioners to just throw their food out. We will never go there again.

Excellent find! Very appealing shop front and though small, really pleasant inside. We had a warm welcome from a young lady who took our order promptly. Our flat white and tea were very good. It was our first visit to Downham Market, a pleasant small town so when we go back we will revisit The Seat.
