Less Thani pressed on our last visit. 1 inch of Hot Chocolate rest of mug full of froth. Soon responded but only filled mug up to 3/4 full. Not same value or delight factor as we have had lots of previous times before. Sadly looks like we’ve lots a gem……

The walk we were doing passed by the door, so it seemed reasonable to call in for a drink! My husband had the Marstons Pedigree which he said was very good. They only had fizzy cider on (no great surprise) which was OK even though I would have preferred a traditional-style still cider. We sat outside which was lovely.

6 of us were staying in a cottage directly opposite The George. We ate and drank here after soon arriving on the Sunday prior to New Year. All 6 of us ordered a different meal and none of us were disappointed. The service was very good and all meals arrived at the same time. We visited for drinks a few times during our break and it always felt warm and welcoming.

Food was really nice but the atmosphere was awful between the staff and how they treated some of the customers. I was sat not far from a family it was a mum and dad and a young boy and older looking lad. He may have been dating one of the employees but the moment he walked all I heard was a loud commotion and 3 girls run into the kitchen shouting come look he’s here at first I thought oh it might be a surprise party but the boy walked straught to bar with girlfriend and ordered a drink off an older women who I must say was very nice and welcoming. We then seen them sit down and order food and when the food came out some girl who took it out a tall redish haired girl walk out and through the food on the table and all I heard was hears ya food in awful tone it made me jump out ma seat as I though a plate had smashed how hard she put it on table. And then gave the young lad a horrible look and I jsut watched on in amazement as the boy went bright red and was so confused. Then his girlfriend started work and she was left on the bar by herself as the 3 girls sat in the back speaking and laughing when there was loads of people on the bar and I even saw a cloud of smoke when one of them I believe the girl with glasses was vaping while leaving the poor girl who was nearly in tears at this point on the bar by herself. I think it’s disgusting thid has happened as what happens outside of work should stay out of it. I spoek to the boy he seemed very nice and didn’t tell the reasons why this happened but he mentioned he was in the army and had came back of leave and his girlfriend I think at this point she has walked out cause of everything and she was crying saying how much them girl were saying and the dirty looks they were giving him the whole time. Honestly I love the dog and duck me and my husband do but to see and employee getting treated like that was horrible to see especially when there sat in the back vaping which any customer could see laughing and joking. After they left I then heard all the girls talking about it making fun of them both and just been genuinely horrible. But like I mentioned earlier the older women who served the boy and his girlfriend and th bar seemed very nice and do her best to sort the situation out and food was amazing as always. I have never seen in an incident like this in my life especially at a local pub honestly them girls need a good speaking to and need to mature if they want to be better for the pub.

Since their multi-million pound revamp, both the hotel and restaurants have gone from strength to strength. We had Sunday Lunch in the Gallery restaurant with friends, looking out at the snowy Derbyshire hills! Beautiful views all round. There are only four choices of starters, mains and puddings - but our beef and the salmon main courses were well-cooked and of very good quality. Many items are locally sourced too. Good and knowledgeable service too. While Gallery restaurant is more suited for adults, the lovely Terrace restaurant is more family-orientated and has a wider choice of food options. Easily ‘teamed’ with a pre-lunch visit either to Chatsworth House grounds or around the House itself in season. Go and enjoy.

I do love The Rutland Arms and visit quite regularly. When they get it right here, it’s unbeatable, and they got it right when four of us visited for a family lunch in December. We all chose different main courses and, apart from my slight disappointment that the kitchen had run out of apple sauce to accompany my roast pork, everything was spot on. One of our group had roast beef, one went for the fish and chips and the other person chose coachman’s chicken. As well as the perfectly cooked veggies that were served with the dishes, we shared a couple of portions of cauli cheese and it was all divine. My roast pork was tender, lean and melted in the mouth as, apparently, was the roast beef. Prior to our mains, two of us had the carrot, coriander and coconut soup, served with lovely crusty bread, and it had the most gorgeous flavours. I loved the croutons, too, which were lovely and crunchy on the outside with a nice softness inside. Timings were perfect, with just the right amount of time to relax between the courses when I could savour the utter deliciousness of the soup. The other three managed deserts, one crumble and two crème brûlée, and, although the latter is my all time favourite dessert, I was stuffed to the point of thinking I’d need to be rolled out of the place if another morsel passed my lips! Service was faultless. With drinks and 10% service charge, our bill came to just under £166 which, I felt, was excellent value for money. It really was a perfect family lunch.
