Booked on a Thursday night with my bestie, as we'd called in for a cuppa during the day recently and thought the menu was interesting. I really can't fault the place. I ate brie wedges and bouillabaise. Both delicious and huge portions. We drank an excellent bottle of viognier and lovely malbec. My friend ate a pate starter and Moules mariniere. Again, huge portions. All the food was excellent. Service was friendly and plenty of other customers. And I think it was reasonably priced at £120, for the quality and quantity. I'll definitely be returning.

We are now well into our seventies, our idea of a good walk involves good refreshments and somewhere pleasant to sit and enjoy them! The Cromford Canal is a delightful walk, and the cafe is the perfect place to relax afterwards (or before, or both....) Excellent home baking, pleasant surroundings with a long history, and friendly service.

Proper pub with cask ale, wood burners and low beamed ceilings. If you're seeking refuge from the wet and cold, there is no better place to be. It's warm, cosy and comfortable, and the owners have always been kind and friendly. In summer there is a garden out front with a few benches and a wonderful view into the valley.

This has relatively recently changed ownership with it a completely different experience from really great interior to very good food. Staff are excellent, beer the same. Personal recommendation on the fish finger sandwich, it’s called something fancier on the menu and looks it!

I have to say first time we have visited this venue...The atmosphere is electric from start to finish. Staff so helpful and friendly manager was so welcoming and spent time chatting even though the place was packed! If you are in the area and fancy a great pint and some exceptional food then look no futher! We shall return.

The food was lovely. The seating not the most comfortable, but to be fair we booked quite last minute so can't really complain that we weren't sat at a normal lower table. The customer service was average, not rude, everyone was very polite, just some consistency in the operation required. For example we left and paid for our dinner, but we would have stayed for dessert had we been asked if we wanted any (sat there for 20 minutes waiting). Overall though, really nice pub and lovely setting.

Ok, but I’d go Anywhere else within Ashbourne in the future. Reheated and what appeared to be low quality food. Service confusing and they got my drinks order wrong. I’m all for promoting great dining experiences, but sadly this was not one.

The soup ( carrot and coriander ) was very nice. I also liked the option to choose white or brown bread. The cakes were also really good and the jacket potatoes looked large and filling. I also loved how dog friendly it was with a special menus for the furry pals!

Very sadly it seems the latest bad reviews are true. It's like the owners don't care or employ people who do not get training. Three things missing....service with a smile....or even a nod.....food like it used to be...great breakfasts and chip butties again....cleanliness that does not resemble the slums of London from 1600s....close it down, sell up....you can't run a cafe....sorry, but I am only being truthful. And please get reassessment on food standards....should be 0....

The walk we were doing passed by the door, so it seemed reasonable to call in for a drink! My husband had the Marstons Pedigree which he said was very good. They only had fizzy cider on (no great surprise) which was OK even though I would have preferred a traditional-style still cider. We sat outside which was lovely.

My Wife and I visited this afternoon and we were surprised by how quiet the place was for saying it was a Bank Holiday weekend. Maybe that should of been an omen. Ordered starters, roasts and drinks at the bar. The garlic breaded mushrooms arrived shortly after and were rather basic, accompanied by a tiny bowl of tasteless garlic mayo. A staff member arrived whilst we were still eating them enquiring if we were ready for our mains. When the roast Turkey arrived it was mainly a plate full of undercooked broccoli accompanied by a tiny portion of Turkey, a tablespoon of mashed potato and four tiny overcooked roasted potatoes. All of which were swimming in very watery gravy, the whole meal had a strange smell about it. Sorry to say, we won't be rushing back to this less than average chain pub.
