We did a slight detour on a 4hr walk to get some lunch. We didn’t know anything about the place, it was just a convenient place to stop. We sat outside, it was pretty quiet I guess and the food arrived quickly. We’d both ordered the turkey and stuffing on brown bloomer. It arrived with a tub of gravy, too! Absolutely delicious!! We also bought one of ‘Aidan’s Giant Sausage Rolls’ as a take out! Still eating it the next day. The bar man was very friendly. Great position in the village, opposite the Church. Only a short stay of about 50 mins but we really enjoyed it!

Terrible food, my husband ordered the salt and pepper squid for starters, he got 5 small bits for £8 and the wrong dip. I ordered creamy garlic mushrooms, there was more onion than mushrooms and no cream in sight! Our main meals were ok but the chips were re-fried/re heated so not crunchy on the outside, they were soggy and tasted horrible. We did complain but were told they would speak with the chef, didn’t get kind of apology. We certainly wouldn’t go back again and definitely wouldn’t recommend anyone to go for a meal.

Called in on off-chance of Sunday Lunch on a bank Holiday weekend. Luckily a table was available although quite a lot were reserved - good sign. Chose the lamb. Wasn't disappointed. Roasties were best I've had in a long time - crisp but fluffy. Mash was smooth + tasty. Squishy yorkshire pud - just as I like them. Veggies came separately, actually had flavour (unlike supermarket stuff). All served with plenty of gravy in a jug, and a pot of mint sauce. Couldn't fault anything. Reasonably priced + staff v friendly. Only thing is you can't mix + match the meats like at a carvery - but that's just being nit picking of me. All produce locally sourced according to the menu. Unfortunately I didn't have room for a pudding - maybe next time!

Definitely never again! Called in just after 6pm after a long journey, we were informed quite rudleyby a braced bar man, that food stopped at 6pm. Gave benefit as this pub had been recommended so returned the following evening at 4.10. We were informed by young polite bar man we did not need to book a table and food started st 5pm. We went to sit in the main dining room when food started to be served, to be told, not informed politely, that all tables were taken...it was empty! The braced bar man then pained himself to say we could sit in the other room but to hurry as it was dominoes night at 7pm. Food was OK bit overpriced but we felt that uncomfortable due to braced bar mans attitude. The locals he treated very differently than us. It really was not worth the the trip. Never again!

Two things irritated me about our visit today: not getting served in order at the bar, as Ryan favoured locals over me; waiting 55 minutes for the food to arrive. On the plus side: my pint was topped up properly without being asked; the soup tasted good. Pubs shouldn't be understaffed at any time and, especially not, on bank holidays.

We visited twice on our recent visit to Peak District. A great reception from the staff in a traditional pub/restaurant/hotel. On seeing the menu on our first visit we booked a table for later in the week. I had a fantastic oxtail main course and my wife chose a mushroom starter as a main. Both were excellent with ample sides. The Hotel atmosphere was busy and lively.

Two ploughman's at £14.50 each was an absolute rip off! When I say miniscule, I really do mean miniscule, rectangular, no longer than my little finger, piece of ham, most of which was fat. Tiny amount of salad, a pork pie from heaven knows which budget line supermarket it came from, two pickled onions, small piece of stilton & a non descript light cheese...I don't know, it didn't taste of anything, two pieces of stale bread, a little pot of coleslaw...again a budget tasting, version of mayo, a fiery chutney I'm told & some piccalilli. This was awful & shame on them for charging £14.50 for two plates of rubbish. Well, no plates actually, just one of those silly boards that barely have room to contain your food from spilling all over the table. I don't know how they have the cheek to serve customers this very poor version of a ploughman's classic! The family on the next table left a lot of their meals because of the stale bread & the dry, fatty ham. When the owner asked if we had enjoyed our meals, my husband replied not really, but instead of asking him what was wrong with the meals, he just simply grunted & turned away. The last meal we had in the George, also on a Sunday, was fish & chips, which was the wrong side of warm & we had waited for 30 minutes for it, with brittle batter & very little fish within it. Avoid Sunday's is my first reaction, but on reflection, we may not bother again. Since Covid & the cost of living crisis, many pubs & restaurants have been cutting corners & hiking their prices whilst not delivering on good quality food, service or customer care. So come on, play fair & provide us with the right quality & quantity your prices should reflect. I'm not one for taking photos of my meals, but I wish we had taken some on this occasion, seeing is believing.

Went to a wake there. The food was very basic and stale. There were so much salad on the sandwich platter, the quiche was cut that small to try and make it go further. They wasn't very organised, you had to go to the kitchen for a cuppa. And the coffee was out of a 1 cup machine. Very slow. Think there could have been more staff on to collect pots, it got very untidy with empties. The people behind the bar looked like they'd been wearing the same clothes all week. I was very disappointed in the pub. Won't be rushing back 😔

Was staying locally overnight in the area and was recommended several pubs locally to eat at in the area, we tried a couple and it was either no parking or you had to book in, we decided to try the George Hotel as there was parking to the rear of the building, upon our arrival I asked the friendly gentleman behind the bar if they were serving food and did we have to book in, luckily you don’t have to book in and they were serving food until 8pm, we were passed some menus and shown the specials boards, we ordered our drinks and looked over the menu. I decided upon the 10oz steak and the wife the salmon and asparagus quiche , both served with sides, Both meals quickly arrived and were amazing and very well presented and were delicious , we also had desert, apple pie and custard for me and Eaton mess for the wife. The George hotel is a little Gem, amazing food and very friendly staff who made sure everything was spot on, a family run pub that’s worth a visit, and the prices were very reasonable 👍

Arriving without booking we found every table occupied although it was still only early evening; surely a sign of somewhere good. The landlord suggested alternatives but was equally happy for us to wait for a table; fortunately one soon became available. The menu wasn't extensive but there was a specials board to supplement it and we readily found dishes to our liking. The real ale selection was good; my pint was excellent and well kept. The food was excellent, hot and the portions substantial; apparently doggie bags were readily provided for those with more modest appetites. We would have liked to sample the sweet menu but we really didn't have anywhere to put it! Definitely value for money!

We ordered drinks and food, both of which arrived fairly quickly. You wait a little longer for food because it is freshly cooked. The food was excellent. Generous portions and piping hot. Which is just as well because it was extremely cold in the room with no heating at all. We were the only people in it.We left straight after eating because I was shivering with cold. Friendly staff, friendly locals, nice relaxed atmosphere, reasonably priced, small cosy rooms, and there’s a real charm about the place. I particularly liked the collection of plates within the premises for each year, though the collection stopped in 2009 (?), and other quirks. Had a couple of lunches here and an evening meal. All three meals were plentiful, cooked to perfection, and served piping hot. For the money, a bargain! Big fan of the homemade chips! This must be one of the most joyless places we’ve been to for a long time. We only called in for a cup of tea after a long walk, and wished we hadn’t! There was a badly broken and dangerous bench seat in the lounge with a large visible broken section of wood (I mentioned this to the barman who said they knew and were waiting for it to be fixed... but no warning sign or similar), plastic seat covers in the lounge were ripped or slashed, they particularly advertised themselves as having speciality teas including Earl Grey but didn’t have any, the whole lounge area was painted a ghastly shade of purple and pink and desperately needed redecoration and the public bar was worse. It might be ok to sit outside at the front in the summer looking onto the quiet main street and there looked to be a reasonable selection of real ales, as well as a modest selection of home-cooked meals, but thank goodness we weren’t thinking of booking accommodation here (they do offer it). Not an experience we wish to repeat and clearly not a popular pub either, certainly in the daytime - and we realised afterwards that there was at least one other much nicer looking pub in the village which was also open on a quietist January afternoon. We’ll be going there next time.

Visited for a family meal of 5 after some walking in the area. Fairly basic dated facilities, but friendly welcoming staff, and fantastic food, so don't judge a book by its cover here! We ordered quite a range of food but it was all delicious and piping hot. (Ranging from paninis, roast dinner, hunters chicken and braised liver) The outstanding chips were probably the nicest we have ever tasted, they had a 'proper sun tan' no pale chips here, and tasted amazing! Prices were perhaps on the expensive side (£5+ for starters, £7 for paninis and mains £10+, but when considering the portions and the taste we were happy with what we paid.Walkers, families and dogs are all welcomed here, especially dogs, as the staff made a particular fuss of them all! There are more areas around here that we would like to come back to visit, and will hopefully pop back here for another meal too.

Visited after a wet 10 mile walk, decided on this pub as it looked the most dog/mud/walker friendly compared to the more formal dining pubs in the village. Ordered bowls of chips and some huge sausage rolls from the bar - was asked if we would like these serving warm to which I said yes. Sausage rolls both came out burnt- they had quite obviously scraped the top layer of black pastry from them before serving them so there seemed little merit in sending them back if they were happy to send them out like that. Had to go find a waitress and interrupt her from playing on her phone to ask for condiments and cutlery. Sausage rolls got fed to the dogs as they were utterly inedible, how any “chef” could serve something so obviously burnt is testament to this place’s standards. It could do with a thorough clean, painting and getting the front of house dressed suitably - the waitress who served us was wearing a crop top with about six inches of her stomach on show. The pipe work in the ladies loo was leaking all over the floor and obviously had been for some years, they looked desperate for a good clean but someone had just stuck a vase of flowers in there to cheer the place up instead. Utterly bizarre place.

Bearing in mind, we heard the landlady say on two occasions, "We cater for walkers, they want building up, so we serve large portions...no sense in going home hungry is there?" Well that's exactly what we did, & when we got back to our holiday cottage, we had some toast to fill up. Miniscule portions & my husband only had half a portion of pie that was bone dry. My pork was nice, but had very little in the way of chips with it. Other people's plates came out full to the brim & some of the wastage on these plates was shocking. After our 10 mile walk, we needed a bit of building up. My husband complained about the pie & it was taken back & replaced with a full portion, but again dry, hidden by a mountain of gravy. When we went to pay, my husband mentioned this but no one was interested & they really couldn't have cared less. We've been using the George for nearly 11 years now & there has been a steady decline in portions & standards. Sadly, they trade off the tourists & don't give a fig for standards or the state of the place.... broken benches, dumped fridge freezer outside, no effort to clear it & make it a nice seating area for anyone. W had very expensive take away chips last year, a miniscule portion yet again...daylight robbery springs to mind. Next time we do a 10 miler, we'll go elsewhere. Sorry state of the pubs in Youlgrave at the moment

For me traditional would normally be a positive, but this establishment could do with some sensitive updating. First up would be recognition that customer service has moved on in the last 40 years. We almost felt we were interrupting the barman in his work, and while the food service was reasonably prompt there was no attempt to find out whether our food was Ok and plates were left on the table long after we had finished eating.

Visited this pub twice whilst staying in Youlgreave recently. The pub is very old fashioned, with lots of cosy rooms. Very dog friendly. Wonderful cider on draft and the food was amazing. I can personally recommend the roast (I had Beef, which was very tender!), very generous helpings with lovely fresh veg and the bestest mash in the world (according to my 11y/o daughter!). Both my son and daughter sampled the sweet potato, chickpea & spinach curry which was very tasty! And on the second visit I had the Cod and Chips... just as good as the rest of the food, which wonderful rustic chunky homemade chips! The staff were very friendly and welcoming, always happy to help and even come for a chat! ☺️

Large portions of food served but your typical pub food. Mashed potatoes a bit watery and it was quite noisy when we were there. Staff very friendly though.

Visited for a meal on a pleasant summer evening. Had decided on our meals at 8:05pm. A single man behind us was ready to order so we said for him to go in front of us. He ordered his meal - no problem.... Our turn. As we went to order, we were told, ‘Food’s finished!’ We were astounded as the man we had let go in front had been served. No apology. To cap the evening off, the elderly barman was rude and dismissive without an ounce of customer service. I suggest a swerve of this poor establishment.

Popped in for dinner twice with a friend during our stay in Youlgreave. Lovely little pub, friendly service by the staff, felt welcoming. Food had massive portions, could only eat about half! Would really recommend the giant Yorkshire puds - I had the vegetarian version and it came with veg, mashed potato and roasted potatoes. They had other veggie options too. Was really lovely and would recommend.

Popped in here one afternoon after a walk and sat outside. Had drinks and food and the décor is looking a little tired but the staff are friendly and the pub and furnishings from another era. Menu did look like something from years gone by but we ordered all the same, a panini with salad and a deluxe burger with chips - it had a name but I can't remember. Anyway the panini was fine quite good my wife said but my burger was very average, over cooked dry meat and the cheese had little flavour, possibly the worst beef burger I have had from a pub. The chips were good but a few were still joined up - I had a three legged chip.

Whilst staying in the village we popped in here a few times. The food was good, the drinks fairly priced and well kept, and the icecream amazing, but the best bit was the warm and friendly welcome. Wish this was my local!

Called in at the end of a walk after seeing this pub in Camra’s Pub walks guide. Dingy pub in need of a massive overhaul and a good clean in the meantime. Almost just had a drink and left but decided on panini each and a bowl of chips. The chips were nice, paninis average and side salad feeble. ( The menu has very serious punctuation issues!! )My husband went to the toilet and advised me not to bother - worst he’s been in. Wish we’d tried the Bull’s Head instead!

We visited in the evening. The decor in the bar is tired and it smelt of burned chip fat. We were led to believe that there was a quiz on but it seemed not! The barman advised us to go elsewhere - so we did!

Popped in for an evening meal and enjoyed a typical meal in a typical English pub. Nothing really special, but good food for reasonable money. Portions were generous and food tasty. Place is a bit tired but that sort of added to the atmosphere. Good place to stop when you are tired and hungry as plenty of choices on the menu and drinks from the bar.

We stopped in here just before we started one of our walks. I had a pint of heiny and my partner had a flat diet coke, didn't moan though. After looking at the very large menu we decided on a few bits - i had the fish and chips which i couldnt fault except the side salad that looked like it was prepped a week before, the pot and leek soup which was really nice, a cheese and tuna panini which was standard again the side salad wasnt much cop and then also one of the sausage rolls off the bar, it had clearly been sat there way too long it was a bit tough on the ends, along with another drink we must have spent £35. Sorry to say its very over priced for what you get, should def lower the prices. Apart from that the staff were all friendly enough. (The picture does do the food justice as its been photoshopped) real life the salad was dull.

At 6.00 pm there was one other customer in the lounge. This, plus the rather neglected decor, could have put us off, but the welcome from the barman/manager, plus the appetising meal the customer was working his way through encouraged us to stay. A good move. We ordered the same as he was eating - steak pie, mashed potatoes, broccoli and carrots - and sat back and enjoyed our reasonably priced drinks. When the meals arrived, we found the plates were piled high and one couldn't have asked for more - or got anymore on the plate. The pie was packed with tasty meat and topped with an equally tasty pastry. The vegetables were cooked "just right" and simply delicious. We both cleared and plates and then had to laugh when we were asked if we wanted a dessert. The only downside of the George is the rather tired decoration. By 7.00 pm, the lounge was filling up nicely.

Called in for lunch. Was only going to have soup but am afraid parsnip is not on my radar. Instead chose fish cakes from starter menu and other half had burger and ordered side of chips. There were more than enough chips for both of us. Freshly made and with skin on they were divine. Friendly service and good food. Will return to eat from main menu. Friendly pub open all day for food. Staff are welcoming and helpful. Unfancy environment great for locals, dog walkers, hikers and other visitors to the village. Tasty food, I especially like the beef in giant Yorkshire pudding which is yummy! Fish and chips recommend too. Prides themselves on their meat products - justifiably in my opinion. Have both a "standard" menu and a specials board. I am local and have used the pub for food as a couple and with family and always found it a very satisfying meal.

We went in the evening as we were staying up the road, the missus had a fish cake, which was a little stodgy and I had partridge breast in orange & cream, which although cooked nicely, had never seen salt or pepper in its life, which made it a bit tasteless. Prices were good value though and the staff were friendly.

A lovely pub, not too expensive (£8.00 for an Old Mout and Amstel) and my other half had a small fish and chips which came with peas, salad, and coleslaw and she said it was the best fish and chips she'd ever had. We bought a sausage roll to take away with us, which we decided was essentially a sausage Wellington! Bloody lovely. A nice pub to sit down, outside, and take stock of life.
