Really warm cosy venue with lots of character that also has accommodation available. Staff were obviously well versed on how to address guests and the meals provided were exquisite. The Chef has apparently been there for sometime maybe over 15 years if i remember correctly. Great place for a few drinks and food just be remember you get what you pay for 😊

This was our third visit to The Peacock in as many weeks On our First visit we had the Tasting menu . The whole meal including taste, service and presentation was absolutely faultless - 100% The second time we visited was for a bar lunch at midday on the Saturday and we had fish and chips in the bar area . Accompanied by a perfect Hendricks and cucumber gin This is the bit we had not seen coming, we heard the menu is changing early Sept . So we decided to push the boat out and return for a repeat of the tasting menu . Pushing our luck we thought perhaps, as sometimes no matter where you go - the second time round isn’t always as good, it may be slightly different or it may not hit the spot like our first time…. But … Wow we had no need to worry- it was completely Sublime as exactly as the previous time was! We have loved this Hotel and Restaurant for many , many years. It may have been through its challenges and changes over the last couple of years (but honestly where hasn’t) however they certainly have come out the other end and are absolutely delivering top notch food and service ! A truly Fantastic team headed up by Valentine -

From the moment we arrived we were greeted with such warm and genuine hospitality. We had drinks in the garden which is stunning prior lunch. The young lady host was a breath of fresh air, she was so engaging and passionate about the specials of the day it was hard not to opt for them. I went for Derbyshire lamb Wellington which was incredible! Served with truffle mash, English asparagus and wild garlic foraged from the bottom of the garden near the river. Some of the party had the excellent fish of the day which was Stonebass. The team in the restaurant were very attentive, smiley. All food was beautifully presented. We haven’t been before but will definitely return next time we visit the area.

An incredibly dissatisfied lunch experience. Whilst the food & service were good I was overcharged by £32 . A helpful response where I was told that a mistake had been made and a refund would be made - except they took another £32 from my account- oh dear another phone call so I’m now down over £100 for a approximate £38 lunch and it’s going to take 2/3 days to get a refund - hopefully! Happy Christmas!

We had dinner in the bar, sitting by the open fire on a carved oak seat that could be 100 or 300 years old. They have a seasonal menu, rather than a sample unicorn or tired set one. It offered the perfect balance between comfort food/healthy food /fresh/seasonal/local/traditional & indulgent food. They also certainly know how to cook an artichoke. The 'sweets' served with the coffee were to die for, but since there were just 2 homemade artisan chocolates and one small fruit jelly, I think we'll live another day or two. I just love this place. Thank-you so much for a special night out.

A group of 4 of us had lunch in the bar area for a birthday treat, or so we thought. Upon arrival, the table had been reserved near the bar but we found the cushion on the pew style bench stained and covered in crumbs. Drinks were extremely expensive, a bottle of Prosecco at £46. The food, 3 courses, was fine but didn't really understand the lamb ragout as part of the main dish. To us a ragout is a tomato/vegetable based sauce, combined with meat to give a rich savoury dish. What was actually served was a creamy based sauce with lamb mince and finely sliced potato scattered on top which didn't complement the rest of the lamb dish. Service could have been better given the price of the food served, even having to search around for someone so we could pay the bill. Overall, underwhelming for an establishment of this nature. £260 for the 4 of us including 1 person having only 1 course.

Fabulous location. Staff went out of their way to make sure everyone was looked after. The food was fantastic and the private room was lovely. The only (very small) issue was being the amount charged for two high chair meals (both 18 months old) - thought that was a bit cheeky but did not really spoil the enjoyment and experience. Hadn’t been for a while and decided to try the lighter lunch. 3 courses with a half size main. Didn’t start well, we were the only people in the dining room so we asked to move to the bar which was much cosier. Food was excellent, heirloom tomatoes and goats cheese and a ballottine of ham and duck and pork liver to start (a bit more salad with the ballottine wouldn’t have gone amiss). Mains was a superb lamb rump with the fat beautifully rendered. Dessert lemon curd tart and a chocolate parfait. Not a fan of mint ice cream normally but this was very subtle.

The four of us, two of which have dined here before, all had a very disappointing experience and meal. All meals were served on stone cold plates. The fish dish of the day (sea trout and pasta) was served with a thin tastless lobster sauce certainly not worth the £25 price tag. I had haddock and chips (£19). The chips were only just warm enough and a long time out of a not to hot fryer. Just the word 'chips' whets the taste buds,- hot, golden and crisp. The haddock was soggy, served upside-down, skinned side up on a cold plate. We also ordered two syrup sponges with custard and ice cream. The sponge was hot, the custard was cold as was the plate again. It took a long time for the staff to respond to any requests throughout the meal. My dining friend was treating us all, we felt we could not comment as it would reflect on him. But we will certainly not wish to be taken to the "Peacock in Rowley" again, as it has certainly gone down hill and seems they can not deal with the basics of food and service. A long drive for an insipid, soggy and cold plated meal completely a very disappointing experience.

... the experience was just a tad sterile. The restaurant was laid out like a hospital ward, there was no colour (fresh flowers would not go amiss) and with the serving staff wearing masks (to be applauded) it was difficult for them to relate. However the food was excellent and there's a good wine list including a nice selection of wines by the glass. We took our dessert outside on the patio and that lifted the mood, somehow the staff lightened up, so there is hope. Couldn't give 5 stars but the food was enough to earn 4.

Tasty food but the experience wasn’t fine dining. The room was sterile and cold with customers sitting in two rows. The service was friendly but not professional and some training is definitely required to support the chefs efforts. Giving an amuse buche and pre dessert creates an air of fine dining but £16 for one scallop on a little cubed squash?! £12.20 for two coffees? £3.95 for a tonic water is absurd pricing. We’ve eaten in 1,2 and 3 Michelin starred restaurants and would choose a local before The Peacock.

We found the fine dining in the restaurant was completely uninspiring, The food, poorly seasoned, luke warm and generally lacking all round. The menu had little choice and the fusions just did not work. The service was attentive in a peculiar way, but one young waitress was completely incomprehensible behind her mask which was rather embarrassing. Both the food and wine were exorbitantly overpriced and certainly did not give us the fine dining experience we were looking forward to. We will not be returning.

Having heard good things from others we booked a dinner for our wedding anniversary and had high hopes for a fantastic evening. Initial impressions were very good - we were seated quickly and the waiter taking our orders for the first two courses was friendly and attentive. My starter (carrot and walnut) was delicious, my main (potato terrine with a bland bread-crumbed egg) was fairly average, and my dessert (financier) was OK. My husband thought all his courses were good but not special. The evening started to go downhill after the main course, as our waiter changed and a younger, perhaps less experienced, waiter took over. With our dessert order we had also asked for cups of tea and we expected this would follow the dessert. The dessert plates were cleared and the tea did not materialise. We waited a while and then asked the waiter if we could take our tea on the patio, as a bit of a reminder that we were still waiting on it. He said fine so out we went and waited a little longer, still no tea. Others around us were receiving their drink orders but over 20 minutes had passed since our desserts had been cleared away so we decided to give up on the tea and just get the bill. I called over our waiter to let him know and he asked if we would wait because the tea was almost ready, they "just needed to add the water"! I'm sure it would have been very special tea, having taken so long to get to the final (and only) stage of adding the water, but we declined and asked for just the bill. When the bill arrived, the waiter advised that they had taken the tea off for us, as if he were doing us a favour by removing a charge for tea we had waited ages for and never received. It didn't leave a favourable final impression. I'm afraid I will skip the Peacock for future special occasions and opt for one of the other good restaurants in the area.

My wife and I with my 13yr old son came to the Peacock on 28th October 2020 for lunch. The meal was tasty although portions were on the small side. Some prices were absurd - we ordered water and later found out that a bottle of around one litre was charged at £5.35. A side order of chips was £4...but consisted of 8 chips...thats 50p per chip. Now I don't mind paying for high class food but overcharging for chips and water is just having a laugh at customers.Service was quite good but one of the waiters leaned right over our table to pick up a dish...sorry, but that is not high class service. Crumbs were not cleared between courses..I suppose the excuse is Corvid but if a waiter can clear the table between courses they can surely do some tidying. I also overheard a waitress telling some other diners that she did not know the details of a certain dish they wanted to order. The background violin music whining away became rather irritating... There is plenty of suitable music that could be better chosen. So in summary the Peacock should look at the details to match the quality of its tasty food and justify the prices that it charges.

We booked The Peacock at Rowsley for my husbands birthday for a special as we were staying in the area.We regularly eat at fine dining restaurants and have been to a couple of Michelin starred places too. We were really disappointed with the level of service and the knowledgeability of the staff about the food and the wines and the bill here was more than we have ever paid for a fine dining or Michelin starred meal.. The food was good, not exceptional and the quality of the food did not reflect the cost sadly. When you spend that sort of money (our bill was £300 for the 2 of us) you expect something pretty amazing and it just wasn’t.

Great lunch in stunning historic hotel. Professional and friendly staff helped make our delicious”lighter lunch” all the more special after a walk to the Nine Sisters. Information is available to read about this very beautiful and well maintained 17th century hotel with its delightful grounds. It is spotlessly clean and fully compliant with Covid protocols. A good range of dishes on the set lunch menu such as a delicious salmon starter in its own crispy skin and a parsley soup with creme fraiche, both served with sourdough. For mains (which are half normal main course size) my sister enjoyed lamb and I had a creamy tomato risotto with yellow courgettes and nasturtium leaves. To finish we treated ourselves to peach Melba crumble and lemon meringue, all washed down with very acceptable glasses of the house white wine. It’s a great place for a special treat. In a gastronomic era dominated by a surfeit of no-choice tasting menus it is a delight to sample the fine dining choices offered by the menu at the Peacock. With its delicious, daily changing, amuse bouches and pre-deserts along with a hyper-salivatory choice of seven starters and mains, it takes you back to the masterfully inventive days of the 1970 with all the refinements of a modern and superbly creative kitchen team. This super bill of fare offers guests at the hotel a good reason to stay for a few nights without wondering where-else to eat. After temperature checks and hand sanitising we were warmly, and efficiently, welcomed into the bosom of this lovely old Hotel in the heart of early autumnal Derbyshire. The food was up there with the very best of British cooking. My starter of beautifully presented Tuna tartare with a soy flavouring and a thin yuzu gel covering was a sushi wonder and my wife's cauliflower soup with curry oil drizzle (another homage to the 70's) superbly creamy and flavoursome. Our mains (Stone bass with fennel and sardines and the superb goats curd and shallot ravioli) were accompanied by an excellent choice of wines by glass or bottle. Choice also included equally tasty but more traditional items from the bar menu and the meal was completed by desserts that would have made any Michelin pastry chef proud. We travelled for over an hour to reach this culinary haven and it was worth every minute. The restaurant, attentive waiting staff and, especially the chefs, provided us with an evening of foody delight. Just go there! You won't regret it.

Food was good, service was friendly and lovely restaurant. However, I remember the experience with a sour note. I ordered the lemon dessert which was not good, was very sickly and overly sweet. The waitress came over as she could see I was not enjoying it and offered to change it. I thanked her but told her it’s okay. She then comes over for a second time saying she’d like to see me enjoy my dessert and will swap it for the sticky toffee pudding. I felt this was very kind. Up until we notice two desserts are on the bill. We did raise this with the manager as we were offered twice to have the dessert swapped, nothing was mentioned about it not being a goodwill gesture. This was highly unpleasant and very poorly managed. Worst of all we weren’t even left with the lemon dessert so at least someone else could have had it. It was taken away and binned. Unacceptable

Reasonable menu choice plus some daily specials. After some ok starters I had the partridge main which was excellent and followed that with one of the nicest sticky toffee puddings I’ve had in a long time. I had tried to book the bar but you cannot reserve a space in it. We were told to come at 6.30pm to guarantee a table. We arrived at 6.45 to be told that all tables were taken up by residents. We were really upset considering the email conversation with the Peacock. Suddenly as we were deciding what to do, a table became free because one of the guests decided to eat in their room! We were shown to the table which was lovely. A waitress came up to us and asked for a drinks order. We asked for fizz and she presented a menu to us and asked for our room no. We told her we were not staying here and she said that she would have to check to see if we could use this table. When we said we had been shown to this table by the receptionist she still left us to check. She came back realising it was ok and took out order. My husband went to speak with her about this. It was a really bad first impression and made us feel very unwelcome. However, it was an important night of celebration and we did not want this to get in the way. The service for the remainder of the meal was good, not outstanding, the food was beautiful and the setting in the bar lovely, much nicer than the restaurant which is why we chose the bar. I have eaten here a number of times in the bar and restaurant over the years and this was the first time I have ever felt so disappointed with the Peacock. As a business, they should not be offering space to residents automatically with the potential of throwing away business from non residents, if they decide not to dine in the bar; this is not a sensible business model. Residents like with other establishments should be encouraged to book to ensure all tables are full and spare tables can be allocated to external groups. If we had not turned up, with the table being freed up, they would have lost out on £250. Which business nowadays has the luxury of doing that?

Bathroom en-suite via 2 steps, very hot water instantly available. Turn down service at night with chocolates and a preview of next days weather -nice touch. Despite being on a main road there was no traffic noise in the room as they have secondary glazing which works. Dinner was served in the Restaurant and was excellent. The building and grounds are undeniably beautiful and the reviews appeared to be rather good, so we decided to eat in the bar at the Peacock (as we didn't have jackets with us on this trip). Well, what a disappointment it was.

It’s the kind of place you go for a special occasion. For us, it was visiting with a very dear friend. She loves to go there, and so do we when we stay in nearby Darley Dale.

We had the most wonderful meal to celebrate my wife's birthday. The food was amazing and the service impeccable. The restaurant is very nice and welcoming. We would definitely visit this again, and would try staying in one of the rooms because the building looked really nice and cosy, but with some modern touches.

We were staying at The Peacock and ate there each day. The food was outstanding. Great selection of gourmet food, beautifully cooked and presented. The dining rooms are atmospheric and a pleasure to sit in. The staff gave brilliant service, and had a super attitude - nothing was too much trouble.

We were staying in the area and decided to treat ourself to a Sunday Lunch. We researched several restaurants in the area and opted for The Peacock as we had really enjoyed an evening meal here previously.

Lovely establishment in this great part of the world. Attentive, efficient and delightful service. Well-cooked and well-presented dishes with evidence of creativity and innovative thinking. Not quite everything worked, but dishes were flavoursome and interesting and our evening was extremely pleasant.

We have been a few times, never left disappointed! It is a charming place close to Haddon Hall. The food was exceptional, and well presented! Service was great and attentive. Managed to finish our fine dine experience with a delicious chocolate soufflé! Highly recommend it, and definitely will be returning! The room we stayed at was very spacious and comfortable. The turn down service is a lovely touch! Thank you for looking after us so well!

My wife and I booked the last table for New Years Day lunch. Restaurants full. A very popular place. Fairly standard menu. Beef, Partridge etc. Two courses for £33.00.Good quality meat and vegetables cooked with twist of special flavours. Interesting variety of less well known vegetables. Roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding excellent. Baked Alaska pudding tasty. Wife commented that the glass of Merlot was very good. Understood why when the bill came. Twelve pounds for a 250 ml glass.

It had been many years since we had visited and having moved to live in Bakewell we realised that you can walk there (although it is 3 miles on a busy road!).

Having herd great reviews about the Peacock my first visit was a little disappointing, however my second visit well exceed my expectations. The service was first class but the food sublime, it was private dining for a Christmas team dinner and we were looked after like royalty, not one negative comment by our group of 12 over all the courses and wine choices. Very very good, can it be this good a third time, I look forward to seeing.

We booked for lunch on a Friday and couldn’t be more delighted that we did; we dined in the bar although also had the option of the restaurant (equally delightful) and the food was sublime from start to finish, with fabulous accompanying wine.

Popped in this welcoming fine old inn with log fire and oak panelling for bar lunch. Full works to snacks menu. So relaxing. Had the best beef sandwiches ever together with superb real ale and coffee. Staff excellent. Tempting now to book a weekend and try the 8 course tasting menu. Great walking in area.

We arrived at this lovely looking Inn, it having been highly recommended. On arrival we were greeted by a polite and friendly young lady, we asked if we could have a table in the bar and have something to eat and were led to a table and given menus. I ordered drinks at the bar which were delivered to the table before we were told that we couldn't order food as there was a large group in and the chef was worried about running out of food. We would have been happy with a bowl of soup and/or a sandwich but apparently that couldn't be catered for either. As a result, I can't comment on the food which I'm sure would have been lovely but as none was on offer to us, we had to go elsewhere. I would like to say better luck next time but there won't be one for us.

Booked for dinner and couldn’t have asked for a better time! Thank you to the staff for being so welcoming and to the chef’s for cooking such wonderful food! Had a terrible experience the last time we ate out at the H Boutique in Bakewell and eating at this place has restored our faith in eating out!

We had a wonderful dining experience here. The food was excellent, as was the wine. The staff were welcoming and attentive, and the ambiance was one of luxurious comfort. A great way to celebrate my daughter’s engagement - so good in fact they have secided to have their wedding breakfast here and I can’t wait!

I admit to being old enough to remember excellent service - friendly but not over-familiar, attention to detail and a sincere desire to make a rainy Friday lunch memorable. The Peacock staff deliver all this along with superb food in which local, seasonal ingredients are relied on to pack a flavoursome punch.

Visited, unbooked for a birthday lunch and not disappointed. Ate from the 'light lunch' menu and found all the dishes we ordered were excellent and beautifully cooked with ideal portion size for lunch. Pleased to see a choice of local beer available and in good condition. Staff attentive, welcoming and friendly. Lovely surroundings and will visit again.

As locals we like to take the children out for a drink after a walk, usually we go to the Devonshire however we thought we would try the Peacock. We went through to the bar and sat down before we had our jackets of a young man cam for our order, we had trouble understanding him but ordered.next to our table there was a broken chair and the seat covers on the chairs dirty. We rushed our drinks as we felt we should not be in the bar. I recived the bill and was very shocked, we had the small apple juices for our toddlers (nearly £12) 2 coffee's (just under £10) and a pint of local bitter (over £5) in total £27. We have been to many places with the children but have never felt so ripped off. You have a nice family pub next door and round the corner is the Devonshire.

This old building is decorated beautifully whilst keeping its place in history. The greeting was friendly and the bar staff know their gin! The food in the restaurant was delightful - the fish was just perfect with a lemon sabayonne and the lamb dish got rave reviews as well. The puddings were as delicious as they were pretty. All in all we had a lovely meal then a wander in the garden on the banks of the river where fly fishing is available.

Beautifully decorated with blazing log fires and a welcome to match, this pub is probably the best in the area. Great menu at realistic prices and unsurpassed quality and presentation - what’s not to like. We could not fault anything - thanks to all the staff for a wonderful evening.
