The hotel is very central and has a car park which is very convenient. It is a lovely looking building but is in need of renovation - the windows are in a poor condition and stonework needs work.We had a nice room at the front of the hotel ( and it was not too noisy ) with reasonable furnishings but the carpet needed steam cleaning and the window surrounds had not been cleaned for some time.Generally the carpets in the hotel were dirty and especially by the function room and toilets. The breakfast was ok.Generally the staff tried to be friendly and helpful. It could be a super hotel but needs money spending on it.

We went to the Square restaurant whilst on holiday in Bakewell last Wednesday. Having seen the food described as "Fine Dining" we were expecting something special. It got off to a bad start when the wine arrived, this was just dropped on the table - nothing said and the top not loosened let alone removed, none was poured by the waitress and there was no suggestion that we should try it - that said there was nothing wrong with the wine, I was more than happy with it, just the service that was poor. The starters were not great - I had the woodpigeon starter, I had asked for the woodpigeon medium rare but it was about raw when it came, the fondant potato was very cold and was clearly not freshly cooked (my guess is that it was straight from the fridge), the carrot puree was stone cold and the advertised red wine sauce was missing (to be fair after I complained we were not charged for this). My wife thought that the Lemon Oil was missing from her starter of Grapefruit with crayfish & prawns and that not having a dressing left the dish lacking something. The rest of the meal was OK, I had the Duo of Lamb and my wife had the Sea Bass (which she really enjoyed).Overall I wouldn't say that the meal met with my understanding of fine dining or good service.

This Hotel is living on its past reputation I'm sure, and I fully recommend the local fish and chip shop ! It is a pity that this place is still up and running and it's only lacking Basil faulty to make it complete. Dear trippers Avoid at all costs.

I was very disappointed by the lack of cask beers at the bar. They sold only keg beer which was chilled for goodness sake. Why does anybody think that beer (as opposed to lager) should be served chilled? I wonder if they chill the red wine as well?I have been going to the Rutland for an occasional drink over the years and at times it has had a reasonable selection of cask ales. There are a number of excellent local ales such as Thornbridge ales and Bakewell Best.Management should take my advice and get some in. Your competitors such as the Devonshire Arms at Baslow have some good ales and you sorely need some.It isn't as if the beer is cheap. The chilled, keg pint of Boddingtons I had last night was one of the worst pints I have ever tasted, even for a keg beer.I do hope they can sort this out as it has the potential to be a good venue. Management should ask themselves: do we have anybody on our staff who knows anything at all about beer?

Just got back from having lunch at The Rutland Arms, where when I walked in at 1.15pm on a Sunday lunchtime with the whole restaurant empty, I should have walked. We ordered for main course Beef Bourguignon with rice and seasonal vegetables and we got beef and ale pie with chips and peas!!! not even an apology.2 courses £14.95 or 3 courses £18.95 - what a rip off!!! this was then compounded when we went to pay the bill of approxiamtely £90 and she told us that if we wanted to pay by credit card it would be £2.50 extra. My advice would be to follow everyone else who knows the place in Bakewell and leave it well alone - very average food and incredibly expensive.

Waited 20mins for a lukewarm mulled wine, god knows what they were doing, we think maybe they went out the back door to the coop for one of those cheap bottles that you heat up, because it didn't taste of much... anyway, that cost a ridiculous £6.50!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Couldn't believe my ears when i went to pay! "won't be going there again!"

This restaurant wasn't a disaster, but it's advertisement of 'fine dining' is a tad misleading. My girlfriend ordered lamb, which was bland and underseasoned, and I opted for the duck. The duck appeared to have been sitting there for over a week, such was the dryness and toughness of the meat. After sending it back and selecting pork as a replacement, I was pleasantly suprised to find a dish with real flavour. Sadly, the final piece of pork came wrapped in clingfilm, which is a combination I'm unaccustomed to!To be fair to The Square, the staff were polite and friendly and we enjoyed a decent bottle of red, albeit served in pub wine glasses. But the whole place just lacks ambience and style, the dimly lit interior giving it the feel of a musty 1970s ballroom. If they simply installed a few more lights, gave the place a facelift and put a little more care into food quality (as the presenation is undoubtedly excellent), then it has the potential to live up to it's banner of fine dining. But it has a long way to go.

The first point I would make here is that every course was fantastically flavoursome and well executed. The warmly welcomed amuse bouche consisted of bread morsels with a wonderful curried butter, smoked aubergine and mustard salmon as a separate sample.Starter was Scottish smoked salmon, caviar, buckwheat bilini, tartar and melba toast with terrine creme fraiche and dill. Excellent flavours and fresh.Main was the star, a study in Pork. This consisted of a roasted filet wrapped in cured ham with bramley apple puree, and a braised belly of pork accompanied with mustard mash, a pancetta crisp and a delicious sage jus. The jus was absolutely amazing and the pork was cooked to perfection. To finish I enjoyed a cheese plate with the Derbyshire blue the stand out cheese. My partner had a vanilla panna cotta which was very tasty. On the whole excellent food with an informal, friendly service. This experience won't break the bank either and well worth every penny. Well done!

Basically, this restaurant in The Rutland Arms is an absolute gem if you're a food lover looking for value for money. Compared to most restaurants in Derbyshire The Square offers beautifully cooked food at realistic prices. I've eaten here over 10 times now and, in truth, never had a bad meal. The service isn't the best out there in terms of sophistication but once you get chatting to the staff it's such a fun and warm place to be.I've eaten in all the top restaurants and bistros throughout North Derbyshire and Sheffield and would rate The Square in my top 3.

The Aquare restaurant is located in the Rutland Arms Hotel in the centre of Bakewell. The Rutland Arms as a hotel has received plenty of reviews however we were staying at Bagshaw Hall and ate in the restaurant on the Saturday Night. We started off with drinks in the bar which was serving ales from renowned local brewery Thornbridge. Into the restaurant we were quickly seated in what is a fairly old style dining room but which does fit the character of the hotel, including all the clocks on the wall, which personally I loved. The restaurant has a Table D'Hote menu and a fine dining menu which I ate off. Starting with an amusse bouch of vegatables and pea shoots. main course was a trio of lamb, roast rib, kidneys and a sausage which seemed to be in the style of a North African mergez. All extremely nice, though again with pea shoots! Though having seen masterchef over the past fortnight pea shoots seem to be very popular at the minute. Finished off with the cheese platter. £32.50 for three courses and £22.50 for wine. I thought this was a very nice restaurant and would certainly book to eat there again when next in Bakewell

Charming Cafe it is. The coffee is very good. The photos of table laid with cutlery and napkins and lovely decor enticed us drive out to Monsal Head where we know the views are wonderful to have a light lunch. BUT We sat at a table and although the place was empty ( very rainy outside ) the staff didn’t acknowledge us, say hello even or explain it is counter service only. If you are expecting food, think again. No meals, No sandwiches, No baked potatoes or anything substantial, just a few cakes, savoury pies and sausage rolls Most disappointing. Wasted journey. WILL NOT VISIT AGAIN. Hassop Station nearby saved the day fortunately.

We recently stayed locally for two nights and ate at the Miner’s Arms both nights. Nic was so friendly and helpful. The food was delicious on the first night but on bonfire night, we ordered the greedy Greek platter on Nic’s recommendation and it was excellent! Delicious food, really dog friendly and very welcoming. We’ll be back!
