Food was good, especially the 2 for £17 after 5pm. Service as a bit hit and miss. All very friendly but then then somethings missed on our order. It was easily solved though I would return.

Spur of the moment visit one evening and was fortunate to find a table. Hard to fault the food and service. TT's Boltmaker was drinking very well and there were good wine options available by the glass too. The food was really good; well executed pub favourites, and some delicious desserts too! Very disappointed with food. Poorly prepared. Grilled halloumi does not mean deep fried halloumi. It was wrapped in a pita with a bit of tomato and onion. BLT’s came out on plain bread, not toasted, sliver of tomato and fatty bacon. Lovely staff but food, at least what we had above, was surprisingly bad. Happy to return for a pint but too many other options in Bakewell for decent food.

We actually stayed at The Red Lion for two nights, eating once in the restaurant. No particular reason for the choice apart from its in Bakewell. It worked out well as it is ideally situated in the town for all amenities and the fantastic walks in the area. The accommodation is functional but suitable for normal needs. Pretty small room and a bit tired in part, especially the bathroom, but OK. The food was very good in the restaurant and busy, probably reflecting how good the food actually is. The staff were lovely, friendly and professional. Parking can be an issue though especially if staying over as car parks near by don’t do overnight. We used a car parking link and paid £20 to park in a driveway 8 mins walk away, safe and secure.

Sat for about 50 minutes waiting for my meal. I ordered a medium sirloin steak! People before us, being served, and watching them eat. Nobody came to us.... totally perplexed. Both left bill paid, no food. Just basic etiquette totally overlooked. Food is probably good, but....staff need to get on board. Totally ruined our evening.. Update.... Looking at the recent reviews, and the attitude in which you reply to the feedback. New management would be a good start.

Came here today and found an exquisite pub nestled in the beautiful old town of Bakewell... The Red Lion was Refurbished to a very high standard only a couple of years ago this pub with guest accommodation really is a tastefully decorated in keeping with the area. Covered seating and eating outside and extended seating inside makes this an ideal eating / sleeping venue if visiting Bakewell. Alex the new landlord was a great host, very welcoming and accommodating he and his good lady have the whole pub top to bottom looking clean and fresh. 😎

We came here a few years ago and the food was beautiful but unfortunately this wasn't the case with our most recent visit so it might have changed ownership. The starters took forever to come out and people that had ordered food before us received their food first. When we eventually got our food it was cold and the kitchen can't seem to follow a ticket as I asked for the curry to have chips instead of rice and I saw it get written on the ticket, once the food eventually arrived it was incorrect and served with rice. The food is expensive for what you get and the service you receive, the chips used to be chunky and homemade and are now bland and horrible and like they're out of a bag. The fish was tasteless and the mushy peas tasted cheap. Some of the staff that were on had an attitude problem as well as they brought someone else's food to our table and then proceeded to give us dirty looks when we told them it wasn't ours. On top of this the toilets had no toilet roll, it's safe to say that we will not be returning, which is a shame seeing as how much we enjoyed it a few years ago but the quality of staff and food has definitely gone downhill and I would not recommend. It should have been a red flag with how many tables were empty whereas when we visited before we had to wait because the pub was so busy. Update to reply: it was most definitely this red lion so I don't appreciate you insinuating that I don't know where I have been I am not stupid. We did approach the waitress who was serving our table however she said there was "nothing she could do". We visited on Monday, you also had no burgers available and this was at 11:50. We were sat at table 21 and our visit was a waste of money because none of us enjoyed anything and we will not be returning.

We were waiting over 1.5 hrs for our food. No-one came to update us or anything and when we first ordered no-one warned us of the wait. We overheard a waitress saying to another table about there being a backlog so we didn't chase up with the staff as it seemed pointless, as we would just be told the same thing. They eventually stopped people ordering to clear the backlog but still no-one came to speak to us. We were both absolutely starving to begin with anyway and finally decided to cancel our food and get a refund and go elsewhere. Our food arrived as soon as we got to the bar to sort it out but the waitress seemed inconvenienced that we weren't at our table. We explained we were about to give up but then decided we'd just eat it quickly. No-one apologised to us for the wait at all

We stayed at the red lion for two nights. The accommodation smelt of mould and had mould and wet all over the windows, on one wall and was mouldy in the shower. The toilet had not been cleaned, with cleaning fluid left on and poo splatters. The sink was badly cracked. We were over looking the road which was noisy and the water system was also noisy. Could hear people in next room coughing as walls thin. Asked to change rooms but nothing available, mentioned the mould and was told ‘ no one else has complained’ and no offer to clean it. Mentioned the toilet being dirty and was told’ it’s cleaned every day’ . Was cleaned after but still dirty. Entry in out when pub closed via steep fire exit which was moss covered.

Pathetic, we were a family of 6, ordered drinks but when we tried to order food we were told sorry no they only accept orders on table of four or less?! Husband said can we order as a table of 4 and a table of 2 and were told "no not really" ridiculous, they lost a lot of money from not just us but quite a few others who were told the same, the red lion is the sort of place that doesn't care as they know they will get the passing tourist trade. Well they won't be getting ours ever again.

When we arrived around 6:45pm we asked if we ordered food at the bar, and a member of staff said yes. After finding a table we then ordered a round of drinks (not cheap!) whilst we decided on food, and were given menus and told which items were sold out. So, three members of staff by this time knew we were going to order food. Then when we tried to order, we were told that the kitchen was only serving people who were staying in the B&B or had a booking. This had never been mentioned before and we had just paid for our drinks. The barman apologised but said nothing could be done, and even once he explained the situation to the chef, the chef would not serve us. I would have liked to properly complain in person but guessed that given our experience already nothing would be done, so just drank up and left. Avoid.

One of the worst dining out experiences in years!! Menu stated that starter of KING Prawns would be served with a tandoori mayonnaise. Out of the kitchen come prawns the size of shrimps with a sweet chilli dip. When this was queried we were told this was a 'misprint' on the menu. Chicken wings were also NOT wings but nuggets and were also served with an incorrect dip. Again told this was a misprint on the menu. We were handed a mayonnaise bottle to placate us. Partners plate was cleared when I was still eating which is a no no!! Partners main arrived without the condiments as described on the menu. Guess what another "misprint"?!?! Serve the food advertised on the menu!! Or change the menu so it is factually correct and matches the food coming out of the kitchen?!? Also starters resembled a frozen £1 bag from Iceland. The manager really couldn't have been bothered and after we complained refunded the price of the mains which we didn't bother to eat as the experience left a very bad taste!! This pub needs to learn a lot of lessons in how to provide a customer with a positive eating experience!!

We went to Bakewell for a family mini break - couple and infant. We were staying at another hotel but was drawn in by the red lions food menu, and it looked warm and welcoming, but it was very much the opposite. On arrival we ordered a drink at the bar and we were then lead to our table and we asked if everything on the menu was available as we didn’t want to be disappointed, we were informed 2 things were not available this was the Mac and cheese bites and the lamb wellington which I was looking forward to. We accepted and proceeded to place our order at the bar - no table service, we ordered a kids starter of chicken wings and mac n cheese from the kids menu and we ordered - 2 starters and 2 mains. Shortly after ordering our starters and mains the waitress came to the table with the 2 adult mains and we said we had ordered starters, she went back to the kitchen and then returned to us and said it had all been cooked together, returning with our mains, we didn’t want it all together - what’s the point of having starters and mains if all was coming together?? Waitress agreed and at this point the manager came over with pen and paper and took note of what we had ordered to try and get it right. The waitress took the mains back returning then with our starters - I ordered the king prawns, this was meant to come with a tandoori mayonnaise, but came with a sweet chilli dip and prawns were small not king in my opinion and husbands tacos (but only 1) arrived ok but very basic! My sons main (no starter) came out, we accepted as he was hungry and was told his wings and garlic bread would be on its way. A few minutes later she returned with a kids nuggets and chips and we said we had ordered wings, we were told we had ordered vegan wings - if this was the case why bring nuggets??? I know the difference between nuggets and wings and also neither of these were vegan, again took back to the kitchen and shortly after returned with wings and undercooked and soggy garlic bread. At this point the owner come manager was apologetic and sincere and she offered us a refund, however, we were happy to still pay for the food as we accepted mistakes happen, we were therefore offered a drink on the house in which we accepted. As soon as we finished starters our mains came straight back out - original mains that were cooked and were luke warm and husbands lasagne was cold - we spoke to Manager/owner about this and told it was fresh food and the original meals had been thrown away and recooked, I find this hard to believe as it was immediately bought out as soon as starters were finished. Manager informed us that the lasagne was 75 degrees although knife was cold after cutting! At this point the manager was finding the situation very challenging and she was becoming emotional, informing us that her staff had been working hard and she had had to close the kitchen off at 2pm that day as they had already delivered over 250 meals (not my issue and if you can’t deliver consistently then don’t allow people to enter and order food!) manager became very rude, abrupt, aggressive and abusive in her language - swearing in front of my 3 year old and also whilst others were trying to eat their dinner, I also apologised to others in the restaurant but afterwards questioned why I had apologised for her behaviour?!?! we were also then addressed by kitchen staff to see if we were ok - they could clearly see we weren’t ok and were very apologetic for her behaviour and informed me this is not normal service. He asked if there was anything he could do and I just asked him to clear away all of our meals as we would not be staying to eat after her unacceptable behaviour towards us and I asked for a refund for our starters and mains, we were happy to pay for my sons as he ate his Mac and cheese at least. Manager was willing to do this, although this does not make the standard, level of service and her attitude towards us acceptable. Manager soon realised that her behaviour was not acceptable and she came to to table and provided champagne and 2 glasses (far too late in my opinion - food had not been eaten - table cleared - why would we then stay to drink champagne?!?!) as we were leaving and didnt want champagne to go to waste we offered this to a neighbouring table - BIG MISTAKE - Manager then became verbally abusive and stormed over removing the Champagne and glasses stating they could not have it - demanding we left - we were already on our way out and was happy to be leaving such a volitile pub! Overall menu and pub looks appealing, however we definitely would not return - food is very basic and in comparison to what is on offer on the menu and service has a lot to be desired - staff need to have more leadership and management.
On the other hand we would recommend the Queens Arms and Rutland Arms.

Unfortunately on this occasion my Lasagne was tasteless, and my garlic bread was so hard, it could have been used to break a window. My wife had the Fish and Chips along with garden peas, which were so hard they could have been used as ammunition in a musket. Also my wife was wanting a salad, but there was no salad choice on the menu. It would also be nice if the young lady with long dark brown hair working behind the bar would smile and look interested, after all it costs nothing. Never again.

Seriously if you are going to advertise a menu, bring the food out as stated. Partner ordered breaded prawns with a tandoori mayonnaise. Well the prawns were the size of shrimp and the sauce was a sweet chilli dip. Mine was supposed to be buffalo wings with a lemon mayonnaise . Since when does 3 chicken strips with a bbq style dip constitute at buffalo wings and at £6.75 for that is a p take. My main was supposed to be a chicken burger with pickled red onion relish and truffle mayonnaise. Again 3 breaded strips, in a bun with none of the aforementioned given decribe what I ordered. What a absolute four letter word show. Stay clear and grab a £6 deal from the co-op. You'll get exactly what you want for a fraction of the price too.

Attended this pub for dinner this Friday evening and wish we’d gone somewhere else. Bar staff very absent and waited ages to be served. Have to order all food and drinks at the bar, no table service. Menu very extensive and sounds excellent, however in reality it is far from the ‘seriously good pub food’ the website suggests. Generally very bland and cheap food, lukewarm, nothing special at all. Our dirty plates were then not collected for a good hour after we’d finished eating, same with the table next to us also. We then went to the bar to ask to order desserts at 8:30pm and were told the kitchen was closed. No prior warning of this and very disappointing, especially as the website says kitchen is open until 9pm. Staff generally lacked any personality and seemed like they couldn’t give a sh**. To top it all off, the evening bingo then began which totally killed off any of the remaining atmosphere. Agree with the review below, drunk people calling the numbers with no organisation to it, generally caused the pub to totally clear out. We made the best of the bad situation and at least it gave us something to laugh about, however having chosen this venue to meet visiting family members we hadn’t seen in over 10yrs, it was embarrassing and a regretful choice.

Popped in for a meal and quick coffee and to say the food was poor is polite. Tasted as though it had been made the day before, dunked in fat and reheated. The staff were friendly enough but let down by rubber gammon and tasteless...

Had a great day out in Bakewell, wanted to end the afternoon with a meal and some drinks in a nice pub.We walked in the red lion as it started hammering with Rain, After getting inside I politely asked to be seated.Had a kid, dark haired and glasses who looked about 12 years old, with an attitude to match.Abruptly telling my wife '"i will seat you when you wait outside like the sign says"!!I was very close to throwing him outside, very rude and upsetting my wife.It was hammering with Rain, there was no excuse for the way he spoke. With such a large competition for restaurants in the same area, I was surprised. We went back outside, and drove our 2 hour trip home as the mood changed and we had enough. We will visit Bakewell again to finish our day out, but won't visit The Red Lion.Pubs and restaurants are all about atmosphere, I'm just sad to say there are a small minority who allow things like this to carry on and expect repeat custom.I think it is sad for the owners, especially in the current climate, as this will reflect on the service given to other customers.Sorry it's a negative review.

We stayed here last year and had a great time, so we thought we'd pop in for food during a recent visit to Bakewell.First, the staff were brilliant, they worked very hard making sure everything was sanitised as each group came and went. They were polite when taking orders and made us feel welcome. The food last year was really good, so we hoped for the same and we were not disappointed. Excellent fish and chips (the kids said the chips are awesome!), perfectly cooked steak, a steak sandwich and a kid's burger meal all went down very well. Also, Chatsworth Gold is one of the best pints anywhere. Highly recommended.

Staff were brilliant and really helpful and friendly, we stopped in Bakewell for a bite to eat after a morning walking on the peaks, family of 5 with a dog. We were seated quickly and our dog was brought a bowl of water straight away, our order was taken quickly and the food was better than we expected with wonderful home made chips and gravy. We had two hot sandwiches, a lasagne and 2 kids meals all the plates were finished quickly (not usually the case with my family). I couldn't recommend more it really hit the spot.

Good customer service, very clean but the food was awful. Tried chunky chips which we pointed and just got a sorry. Worst hot roast sandwich I have ever had. I’ve never seen a limit of £10 on your card before, a £5 yeah, I found that strange. Never again

I was treated by an old friend to a not too sparkling meal and was ending having a pleasant catch up. My friend went to order some drinks and was told that a limit of £10 was only acceptable on the card, after only just taking £45 off him. I was staggered at the rudeness of a male staff member and the business owner/manager/charismatic bypass! I was incensed at the attitude and how the handling of the situation. Any card cost is a business expense and can be claimed against tax, therefore an unnecessary fee! I will never ever go into that establishment again until a change of ownership is seen. I’ve no time for arrogant business owners, we went to a competitor round the corner who had no problem with an under £10 payment with a smile and pleasant.

This is a traditional English pub in the heart of Bakewell and is the place we always go to for food when visiting the area. They have a good selection of food available including sandwiches, jacket potatoes and your typical pub grub classics like pies, fish and chips, gammon etc. There is also a specials board, a small selection of desserts and a separate childrens menu. Our usual favourite is the hot roast cobs, which are served with salad, homemade chips and gravy. Highly recommended and good value at £7.25. The food is always pretty good here. One thing i find odd, though, is the pricing of the jacket potatoes. You can add a second topping for an extra £1. Therefore, a jacket with cheese and beans is £7.50, but a jacket with beans and cheese is £7??? That seems a little strange to me

Our party of 5 including a two year old child called in for lunch during a very busy New Year’s Eve. We found a table (which was fortunate) although it was squashed into a corner and, therefore, a little restricted. We ordered food and drinks from a helpful member of staff at the bar - the food was served after about 20 minutes which we thought was very reasonable given how busy it was. The food was OK, although the batter on my fish and also on my wife’s scampi was quite thick and heavy - not really to our liking - but to be fair the fish inside the batter was well cooked and tasty. There was a nice atmosphere, created by the fact that it was very busy.Overall, I’m my opinion this is an OK place to eat serving a good selection of pub food at reasonable prices.
