I came with my parents for lunch, we weren't after anything fancy and we are local so thought we would try here. I asked for 3 ham toasties and was told they were short staffed and weren't doing hot food. I had just seen a sandwich and bowl of chips come out so I changed my order to three ham sandwiches, (nice and easy). I could see a box of "made up cobs" in clingfilm, which the staff member ferreted through and handed over the counter to me. When I said I really wanted a sandwich, she said " so you want me to make a sandwich up for you", she then said she could make me a NUTELLA sandwich!. Basil Fawlty did spring to mind at this point and we soon left and went to forest nurseries cafe down the road which was a much better experience. I did later explain to my dad that nutella was very different to ham! On a positive note the cafe is in a good location.

Excellent. My partner is dairy intolerant and. They had sold out of the only thing on the menu she could have chosen. She asked if they could do double egg and chips for her and even though it wasn't on the menu they did so. My fish fingers sandwich and chips was also very tasty.

For any brides out there - I just wanted to pre-warn of the pure stress I have endured for the past 6 months after booking my wedding with the Whitworth back in February and having it cancelled. My trust in vendors was completely broken and it has taken til now for me to start enjoying the wedding process again.

DONT BOOK THE WHITWORTH - Very negative customer Experience 1. No show appointment - after booking our wedding and paying our deposit with the Whitworth, we organised an initial F2f appointment with the events manager, we drove over an hour to this appointment on the day only to arrive to no staff being present. The Whitworth offered us an apology only for this over 2 months later. 2. Not answering phones - after this no show, it took us weeks to speak to a Whitworth staff member about what had happened because phone calls are often left unanswered and email response times often took them weeks. 3. Loss of previously agreed contracts and wedding agreements - The Whitworth staff asked us to resend the agreed plan of our wedding because they themselves had lost this information. 4. Redacting previous agreements - after waiting anxiously for months to be updated for our wedding plans the Whitworth organised a meeting with us (they attended this one), where we were told by new staff that some changes needed to be made to the previously contractually agreed wedding, including the capacity (dropping us from 150 guests to 110), despite us having already sent save the dates to our guest list. 5. False reassurance - during the above meeting we were reassured and told that the Whitworth were still very keen to host our wedding and that their changes are only minor details, we were told ‘not to worry’ multiple times in this meeting. We sent an email that evening to the Whitworth asking about the possibility of the maximum capacity being 120 guests rather than 110. 5 days later the Whitworth sent us an email saying they are no longer going to host our wedding. 6. They have done this before - when we called the nearby accommodation to cancel our booking, the accommodation said they weren’t surprised with the Whitworth’s actions and that we weren’t the first to have our wedding cancelled like this. The entirety of this process lasted 5 months. We were offered no compensation for vendors that we had paid deposits to for our wedding. After cancelling our wedding it took the Whitworth over 15 calls and 2 weeks in time to receive our deposit back.

Great coffee and great location but not allowing your dogs in the cafe is a ridiculous notion in Derbyshire! People come with kids and dogs and the cafe gets the business they wouldn’t otherwise get thanks to the regular downpours and people who come to the park to walk with their dogs have to hide out in the cafe instead buying overpriced hot chocolates. Also, wiping a table everyone once in a while would go a long way in a hospitality business.

A little disappointed as usually love this cafe. Unfortunately we were a little late for hot food (2:35pm) We thought would happily make do with coffee and cake but two in our group have allergies and there were no dairy / egg free choices. Settled for coffees which were super hot and a little bitter. Had a fab hot lunch last visit. Will go without allergy sufferers and be earlier next time. Such a shame as these days most places have vegan options for cake lovers with allergies.!

Mainly used for Wedding / Parties & meetings but the have a very lovely cafe / restaurant. This building is full of history charm and character. If visiting the centre and the adjoining park remember there is a small charge to park. At the bottom of the park visit the railway station used for visitor trips. Very quaint with a glimpse of the past, steam trains charging through, signals and signal box. The park is good for children be careful, deep lake and pond close. The centre is run by volunteers and donations. Please support if visiting.

No complaints about the food but very disappointed that the cafe is SO unfriendly towards dogs, considering its location in such a dog friendly park. Lovely location. Beautifully kept park, with bowling green, croquet lawn, a lake and a fairly comprehensive children's play area. Even though it used to be free to park, it's only £1.00 for FOUR hours, which is brilliant value! The cafeteria appears to have changed hands since we were there, last. They've moved the counter to the opposite end and there's no longer any table service...so I had to queue with a fair number of ramblers, who had all come in for coffee and cake, which was a bit of a pain. The Espresso machine was broken, which was unfortunate, but the filter coffees were very good. The homecooked ham in the ham and cheese toasties was lovely. We didn't think the café had quite the same atmosphere as it used to have; the previous incarnation seemed more family friendly, selling ice creams etc. It's in a lovely building, though, with great views across the park.

What a great find. My friends and I popped here on our way back from Matlock. We all wanted simple fare and we struck lucky as we were able to get fried egg sandwiches at 3.30pm. They offer a wide range of food to cater to all tastes including many delicious looking cakes. The two ladies who served us were really friendly and helpful. I will definitely visit again if I am in the area. The only thing to be aware of is that you must register your car when you get inside the cafe or you'll get charged for parking. Just ask the staff and they'll show you what to do. Highly recommend a visit.

Visited on 25th July and we had a latte and a piece of cake after our walk, both were delicious. I noticed you have a sign which politely asks customers to still wear masks (despite this being like trying to catch a mosquito with chicken mesh). Perhaps you should change this to give customers the option and ask customers to respect personal choice seeing as some of your staff had them under their chin or under their nose . . . Just saying.

Mum is in her 100th year and has Alzheimers so we don't go far and the cafe at the Institute is nearby. We take a walk in the park, the children have fun on the playground and then we go to the cafe on the terrace for tea and cakes. The scones are just as Mum likes them and there are sweeter cakes for the children, a couple of pots of tea and whatever the children fancy and we are set for the rest of the day. When it's hot we have some of the speciality ice cream which we can heartily recommend. The place is spotlessly clean and there are toilets with disabled / wheelchair access. Decor is 'country cottage' although really it's a rather tired, large conservatory. The review before mine remarked that prices are high for a place with little ambience, I agree though the convenience of the hot drinks and the quality of the cakes makes up somewhat. However in recent years we buy our sandwiches and soft drinks from the Coop outside the gate and eat them in the park before having tea! For this reason I'm taking a star off.

We hadn't planned to visit but are so glad we did. Not only does Melissa, your very hospitable host, keep an excellent range of real ales in tip top condition, but she also provides a delicious choice of food (but check their webpage for times/ days that food is available). We had one of the warm baguettes, crunchy and packed with tasty filling, and a beef "boing a boing". Great value and very enjoyable. Well worth a small detour if you are near Matlock.
