I tried for a week to book my birthday brunch with friends - 2 emails, 5 or 6 phone calls. No response to emails and the phone went straight to messaging service. Fortunately, we were able to get a table on the day. However, when I tried to speak to the manager about it, so I could understand how to book in future - fully recognising that she could be busy and offering the choice for her to grab me when she was less so - I got a rude 'she won't be available for 3 hours'. Someone else was able to explain that the phone was out of order, but there was no reason for the lack of response to emails. And then the food - I ordered American pancakes, paying £6.95 (full price) despite asking for no bacon but a bit extra maple syrup as I'm vegetarian. I got three of the tiniest French pancakes - about 6cms each. When I flagged this to the waitress, she was very apologetic and offered to take them back but said I'd only get the same if I asked for new ones, which sort of suggests they're brought in not made on the premises - American pancakes they definitely were not, and certainly not worth the money - I went home hungry. Last time I came, my vegan friend was given a meat sausage but everyone can make a mistake. However, that's it for me - never coming to this place again

Had a really nice toasted gluten free sandwich (hummus & pepper) here whilst sitting outside in the sun with a great view. It came with side salad and crisps. Always feel awkward emphasising that I will be really ill if it has any gluten contamination, but was not made to feel bad about it at all which was nice, and was offered reassurance that the sandwich would be toasted in a wrapping. Had a pot of tea, the teabag was a good strong one & they had soya milk. Will be back.

Please note that this cafe is no longer called Mad Hatters and is now the Waterside Cafe. The staff are friendlier and the food is lovely, they open at consistent times (handy as the toilets are only open when the cafe is). There was a lot of fuss when Mad Hatters lease was not renewed and the catering taken on by Derby City Council but it has in my opinion improved.

Been coming here for years never had an issue - ordered some kids breakfasts as they love them, at 1pm to be told they were going to stop doing them as too many people were ordering. Yet you could still order something on toast.. Interesting when the menu header is ALL DAY BREAKFASTS - something for the new ownership to improve on

Amazing food, lovely chicken, bacon and bbq sauce panni! My partner had a bagel which she said was beautiful! Would definitely recommend and come back again!

What a cracking little pub this is! A warm welcome and an excellent selection of ales and ciders, I can heartily recommend the Bee Sting honey cider…it’s strong but absolutely delicious. We’ll certainly be going back.

The cafe only had 5 people in it when I arrived. No one waiting to be served. After being looked at a couple of times by a couple of girls standing in the cafe area one finally came over to take my order. My order given she said it would be bought over. The food arrived and was left at the table by a second girl who was carrying on a conversation with someone across the room. She didn’t bring any cutlery. I got up to fetch some and nearly picked up a spoon out of a container that was full of dirty utensils left next to the clean ones. I felt I was an inconvenience. However the food and coffee were good and hot. Sainsbury’s could do much better than this. Current staff more interested in their phone than customer service
