Crewe & Harpur Derby in South Derbyshire

The service was very slow, we waited 15 mins before a drinks order was taken, waited another 20 mins before they came back to take the food order. We ended up cancelling our desserts after waiting 25 mins for ice cream. No explanations of slower service due to a large party in and kitchen being short staffed until we cancelled or dessert order. The food was however lovely when it did arrive.

Absolutely terrible food. Table was dirty on arrival Hunters chicken was made of rubber. Signature burger came with a stale brioche bun, and the childrens chicken nuggets tasted like yesterdays leftovers refried. At first it came out cold, so had to ask for it to be heated. Robinson fruitshoots are straight of the shelf, extra warm. Terrible.... what's comical is, because we ordered at the bar, on payment they asked for a tip before even receiving any service or food.

Me and my friends went here for a birthday celebration, I may aswell of served myself - I ordered the hunters chicken & the chicken was so tiny and came with a bowl of rocket that was bigger than the chicken. The service was dreadful, the staff are happy to chat around the bar but not ask how our food was during our meal, not take out plates for nearly 40 minutes after we finished and were waiting to be asked about pudding. I had to ask for everything via the bar rather than table service as no one came over apart from the first initial drinks/food order and when the food was delivered to the table. Food was okay, but I really expected better service.

Clare was fabulous and very accommodating!

Needed somewhere to sit and work as well has have some brunch. We were looked after by Clare who kept us topped up with tea & biscuits. We had a lovely breakfast too which was cooked to perfection by Bertie, plenty of toast & juice on the side. Would recommend as a lovely friendly place to work/eat.

Tracey and the team are simply fabulous. We come here every now and again...and should visit mor often. We've always had great food and exceptional service. Our kids love it here....and so do we!!

Very welcoming, great food, beautiful setting. My roast beef was a bit tepid, and they could not have been better, taking it back and bringing me a piping hot meal. I would have been more than happy with it having been zapped in the microwave for 30 seconds. Will recommend this venue to everyone!

poor and pricey ale selection and the smallest portions i have ever seen, the plant burger was the worst.

There were 9 of us as it was my birthday, we all enjoyed our food and the staff were friendly and helpful. What we didn't enjoy was the fact that there was a quiz on (which we didn't know about) the microphone was so loud we couldn't talk, even between the questions the music was loud. Once the quiz finished the music became background volumn and we enjoyed the rest of the evening. Had it not been for the quiz you would have scored 10. Perhaps there should have been mention of it on the booking site ! don't want to spoil anyone's fun, just wish I had known, so we wouldn't have booked for that night. We will come again, but will be extra careful, when booking.

Popped, in for a meal early evening. Been here several times always great food and service. Georgia was very welcoming. We had the Lamb shank off the specials menu. The food was wonderful. Thank you Chef Bertie. The service by Claire was excellent.

Honestly, if you just want to order something from the grill this place is fine, steaks, burgers etc, but don't bother with anything else. We live local and have tried it a few times over the years and are always disappointed. Today is the last time we will bother. Ordered from the Easter special menu 3 courses for 25.99. My starter was the best part (cauliflower wings). My main was a sad looking sea bass with some unevenly cooked and smushed boiled potatoes, some cold greens and peas and a salmon pink sauce, it was fairly bland with unappealing presentation. At the same price or similar pro e I could've gone to The Dragon or The Boot and gotten way better value. Not worth the money.

We arrived around 11.00am on Good Friday, pretty muddy boots and a Labrador to match. We were welcomed in and treats and water provided for our dog. We both had a full cooked breakfast which were outstanding value for money and delicious. The service was spot on. A proper dog friendly, very welcoming establishment.

Visited for a date night, atmosphere was warm and welcoming, the staff were so kind and friendly and couldn't do enough to help. Lovely food, and good options for veggies! Will definitely visit again

Breakfast was lovely and our server Clare was very friendly and nice and service was quick.

My lamb shank meal was great as was pork belly meal for my dad. My brother had a chicken and red pepper dish but had to have normal gravy as there was no other option to substitute the mushroom sauce. His veg was undercooked in his opinion. I don't think the menu card for the specials explained the roast potatoes would have skins so not ideal for my mum. If vegetables can be substituted between the different dishes and they are cooked as desired then it will be worth visiting again for my mum and brother especially. I was very pleased I could use a 30 percent off discount from an email offer on main meals especially as it was my birthday and I wasn't paying. I only gave 3 stars overall because my brother especially was disappointed with the vegetables and sauce as mentioned earlier.

Called to have a bit of Lunch after visiting a company to have a little job completed ,And I think it was a poor decision we ordered the 2 course meal deal the steak was very poor Grade it was not how it was cooked it was poor cheap graded meats it was not just mine my wife's was just the same

We visited as a couple on a weekday. Danny was so welcoming to the pub. Laura our hostess was so attentive throughout the our evening. The food was really lovely and tasted fresh. Plenty of dishes on offer to suit your taste. Will definitely be returning.

Very busy but 100% customer satisfaction

We were allocated a side room which was ideal as we were a party of 16. We had preordered the children’s meals for when we arrived but this never happened. Luke soon sorted this out and their meals arrived shortly afterwards. There was a mistake with one of the orders but again this was quickly rectified. We will be returning as the food and staff were excellent.

Booked table for 2.15pm. On arrival told table not quite ready and we could go and get a drink in bar. We stood in bar for 20 mins until table finally ready just after 2.35pm - meaning we had to purchase an extra drink which we didn't want as planned to have drinks at table NOT IN BAR. Service was extremely slow, even though by the time we sat down most tables were empty around us and stayed empty for at least one hour. Meals took almost 30 mins to arrive and we then waited another 30 mins for table to be cleared and upon ordering desserts had to wait 20 mins for these to arrive. In the end decided not to bother about tea/coffee as possibly another 20 minute wait. By the time we ordered our meal the restaurant area was quite empty, and therefore we could not understand what the issue was with the long waiting times. The final bill was £143 for 5 people and I think that with these prices service etc should be much better. When I paid and was asked if we had enjoyed ourselves I did point out "no" and no apology was given. Prices at the Crewe and Harpur are higher than most other similar venues and therefore I would expect good service. We came away extremely disappointed

We stopped on way back from a track day and were lucky to get table. We had a lovely meal,the food was perfect as was the service. Really enjoyed our evening.

We had a table of three at the Crewe & Harpur. Ad soon as we arrived greeted by a lady ( sorry didnt get name, two plaits!) Had a lovely table. I ordered the salad, my husband and other gentleman ordered the pies. So delicious! The lady ( i think she had graduated from Falmouth univercity) was so delightful as well. I got home and said what a lovely relaxing evening we had had. Thankyou all once again. Jenny x

Booked a table for 19 people to celebrate a 60th Birthday. Georgia, Daniel & Natalie were all amazing from the minute we walked in. Birthday party, all the food was good apart from the chips. Which were dry and tasteless, Apart from those enjoyed it .

We booked a table for nine to meet up with family. When we arrived we were greeted well, given time to all settle then ordered drinks and food. We were checked on regularly to see if everything was okay and the food was hot and really tasty, large portions too! All in all we thought the selection on offer was very good and service was excellent. Thoroughly recommend.

I rang to follow up an online booking as I needed to know if our party of 10 people could be accommodated. The staff member who took my call was friendly and checked and confirmed the booking. On arrival all staff were again friendly. They were especially accommodating of an additional 3 people that joined us moving tables so we could sit together. Our meals came in a reasonable time after we ordered and came out together. The food was good and we ate almost everything. We did have to chase 2 children’s deserts and when we paid the lady who took payment said she wouldn’t charge for them. This was such an impromptu kind appreciated offer. Definitely a place to visit. Lovely walks around Swarkestone then a meal in the Crew and Harper. The meal was lovely and a good price. The waitress was extremely helpful, she gave us excellent service

I would just like to thank the staff at the Crew & Harper for an exceptional lunch on the 21st February. All the staff were wonderful. Clare was outstanding. It was my uncles birthday and Clair gave him special treatment making his day. She even put a candle in his dessert. In fact Clair looked after Us all with great attention to detail. We were a party of 9. (Including Two coeliacs and a baby). Many thanks for a wonderful time. Xx

Staff were very welcoming. Food was very good, well presented and great value for money. Although service was a little slow, the dining area was very busy. Not a problem for us as we were meeting friends for the first time in months and had time for a long chat.

Absolutely wonderful place! A friend and I popped by for food and everything was perfect, from start to finish. Warm welcome as we arrived, seated in a light and comfortable area, quick service and regular check-ins to make sure we were okay, and that’s not even taking the food into account. We had the crispy cauliflower as a starter and it was delicious! Beautiful presentation, generous portion, and exploding with flavour and crunch! The mains were just as good but we were too stuffed to try the very appealing desserts menu. Next time! Thank you for a lovely dinner, with a warm and friendly atmosphere! Every member of staff we spoke with was so pleasant and wonderful. I can’t wait to go back!

The Sunday carvery needed to be a bit more on the warmer side in our taste. It was tasty but needed more gravy. Yes we asked for more gravy and was presented with the smallest pot I have seen.

We have been here quite a few times over the years. Staff always friendly & helpful. Service can be a bit slow during busy times but everywhere is like that! Some excellent dishes, the glazed gammon hock is wonderful. Will be returning 🍛🎈💕🎉

Hi Ladies! I have met HIM at Crewe & Harpur! Sure, all magic was in HIM, but nevertheless, the atmosphere of this place and very good cuisine helped me relax and be myself.

Fish and chips were dripping in oil - greasy as hell which gave me a sickly feeling afterwards. The two staff need to learn how to smile and welcome customers. The lady serving food from the kitchen was very nice.

Good Luchtime menu at a reasonable price. Will be nice in summer in the out door riverside seating area.

Brilliant service and quality meals

From arriving to leaving the staff were very friendly and attentive. The menu choice was very extensive and would suite even the fussiest of eaters.. It's dog friendly too.. The food was great and there was enough time inbetween courses and not rushed.. Highly recommended as I've been several time's, always reserved a table too, so easy to do online..

Service was poor very slow to clear our table. Food was over cooked, more vegetables with very little meat. Extra dishes forgotten and brought out as we were finishing our meal.The gluten free option that was chosen wasn’t available, Then when the gluten free meal was brought out staff were unsure if it was gluten free 😳

Fabulous We stayed at Crewe and Harper in room 2 which was absolutely fantastic, so big with a seating area and large bathroom. The accomodation was a stable block and it has been beautifully adapted retaining original features, whilst blending them high standard touches. The bathroom was spotlessly clean with high end toiletries. We ate in the restaurant twice, evening meal and breakfast. The staff were friendly, professional, and courteous, taking time to explain the specials and checking if everything was OK, or if any additional beverages were required, without being intrusive. The main building was a coaching inn which has been beautifully resorted, with expectional attention to detail. The clientel ranged from fellow guests to locals who were all welcomed warmly. Thank you to all the staff, we enjoyed our stay and will certainly return, hopefully in the summer to enjoy the beautiful beer garden sitting invitingly on the Riverside.

Recently enjoyed a very nice breakfast at the Crewe and Harpur which included a lot for a reasonable price. The lovely Clare took great care of us. Will definitely visit again.

The pub was very busy and the staff were unprepared for the numbers. However they handled it very well. The food was good but delayed and the staff apologised and offered complementary drinks before any complaints were made, showing very good customer service skills.

Just had Sunday lunch here. Been a couple times. Great as always! Our waiter, Lulze, was awesome and def. needs a pay bump- very attentive, expeditious and contributed to us having a pretty awesome Sunday lunch!

30% off voucher on the website so we went for a walk to the Crewe and Harpur for a Sunday roast. We had a turkey roast and a trio roast (beef, pork and turkey) please bring back the half roast chicken option! Added sides of cauli cheese and stuffing balls but they weren’t the best and wouldn’t add them again. Overall the roast itself was good for the price (30% off) and the service from Luke was brilliant. Can’t fault the service at all. We were looked after amazingly by the waiters/waitresses. For the size of our party the food was served in a very timely manner with only 1 meal forgotten but this was brought out within a few minutes. Great service, lovely atmosphere.
