Really good food, really friendly staff. You can tell somewhere is good when the locals go there regularly which seems to be the case with Quirky Bird Cafe. Would highly recommend sitting outside and watching the world go by why you eat your food.

Hard one to review and it's such a mix of great and less great. The place itself is in the sad tired and rundown wharfside shopping centre in the old New Look shop (this causes issues later discussed). To get to it from the main car park (you have to pay for), you need to get an escalator, stairs or lift. The escalator was busy and fenced off, both lifts broken with a staff member from Iceland (the shop below) saying they very rarely work. So taking the stairs it was. Which were disgusting. Blood, glass, rubbish. Not a great entrance to the restaurant. Yet once in it's lovely. Great decor and a really lovely vibe. Really well done so no bad echos and a lovely busy buzz. And the staff were fabulously friendly and lovely. A real credit to the place. Our orders were taken promptly. But we were never pointed to the specials which were on a concertina'd board that we didn't ever see. The starters of pork belly, beetroot and scallops were all excellent. Then things started to go a bit so so. From having an individual waitress at the start we were then switched to a weird system of either no one checking on us for 15 mins to three different staff checking for drinks in 90 seconds. Then mains. The £29 steak was poor quality meat. I'd asked how chef would prepare it and they said medium rare (as they always do sadly). But it was served medium to medium well done. No pink. The pasta dish was dry. And one member of the party asked for a main of scallops but was told no. So she had two started scallops. Which you would have thought they would at least put on the same plate. But no. Three people. Two courses each and two drinks each. £185 including tip. But with it being a New Look there appeared to be no extractor fan..coming home afterwards clothes absolutely stank of stale dead cooked animal. Took me back to days of smoking allowed in pubs. So a hard one..some brilliant..some not. And, while it's not their fault, when you have to pay for parking and the access is broken and rundown, you can see why people dine in our of town pubs and bars... I do wish them the best as the pride from the front of house folk was exceptional even if the food didnt quite measure up.

The food was very good but what really impressed me was the staff. Only two on duty, Jane and Daniel, who had to contend with running the restaurant, managing the bar and checking guests in to the hotel. Having worked on hospitality for 46 years they had my total sympathy and admiration.

A bit of a disappointment on the food front really. No one had updated the serving staff re what had run out on the menu and the whitebait was about as close to being burned as you can get with fried food. Being told “it’s the type of whitebait, it always comes out like this” was a bit of a stretch, but they were good enough to knock it off the bill.

Edit: Thank you for your detailed response. It's reassuring to hear that you do know a lot about coeliac and to know a detailed account of what measures you have in place to avoid cross contamination. Coeliac reactions are quite severe and my body has only started to return to normal again now, two weeks later, so it sucks that it happened. But I do understand the difficulty in making sure everything is completely separate and safe, especially on a busy morning rush. If I was to come back, is there anything I should have done differently to make sure everything is safe? Old review: Nice place but not very allergen-friendly. As a coeliac, it always brings me great anxiety to find places to go out to eat, but this place seemed to have a good gf reputation. Unfortunately this was not my experience. The waitress serving us seemed to be knowledgeable about allergies and when I asked if cross contamination would an issue with their gluten-free meals they assured me that since my allergy was written on the order it wouldn't be a problem. However, when my veggie breakfast came out, my toast looked suspiciously similar to everyone else's, so I asked one of the staff if it was gluten free and it wasn't. They were nice about it though, remade my meal and took it off the bill. Although in their haste to remake my meal or perhaps just out of habit for non-coeliacs who just have a gf preference, I suspect that not all the precautions were taken, perhaps they put my gf bread in the same toaster as the regular bread or something because I left the cafe feeling extremely nauseous. I hope that this was just an honest mistake, but perhaps refresher of cross-contact and food allergy safety is necessary here.
