When you book a B&B; you take a risk. When you book Sophia's you book a gem. We had a wonderful large sea facing room; the bed was big and comfy and the furnishings well thought through. The bathroom furnishing was Villeroy & Boch - very classy indeed. The proprietor, Lynn is smashing. Friendly and helpful, good local knowledge and guidance. And her breakfasts are better than any hotel, fresh fruit, homemade granola, and cooked to order full English or whatever else you prefer. Highly recommend this B&B;, don't be put off by the position on the busy promenade as once inside it's quiet with amazing views. A perfect spot to explore Penzance.

Having booked a few days in Penzance for a long awaited break, my husband & I were really looking forward to dining at Sophia's restaurant again. Our visits there did not disappoint. In our opinion the food is exquisite and represents fine dining at its best! The home-made apricot bread is 'out of this world', the crab risotto and trio of potted shrimps etc are unbeatable and the 'fish & chips' with the home-made tartare sauce has to be tasted to be believed. We have always found the staff to be friendly and helpful, and the owner/chef has always had time for a few words with us which gives the visit that extra personal touch. We have probably visited this restaurant around a dozen times in the last three years (we wish we had discovered this restaurant much earlier) and intent to keep on coming back.Thank you so much for helping to make our holiday complete!

We had had a number of recommendations to try Sophia's and were certainly not disappointed. The welcome was warm and friendly, and the food simply delicious. The first time we decided to forego the starter in favour of a pudding. When making our choices, the staff were helpful without being pushy and the fish dishes we selected (and yes, we tried each others!) were quite exceptional. The (complementary) home made breads are to die for, and the choice of puddings would satisfy most people. My husband enjoyed the sticky toffee pud so much that he had it again on our second visit despite having had a starter ! We shall certainly be back again...

We went on a fairly quiet night and were given a choice of tables in a simple, tidy two-room layout. Set menu was reasonable value - starter and main filled us up nicely for £15.50 each. Food was pretty good with some local options but everything had raw red onions in it, even the prawn cocktail. Good selection of wines (Chablis was excellent and cold). Not much atmosphere but it was quiet. shame about the waitress who was efficient but not friendly, made little effort and wouldn't even look at me! I'm going to say that I would recommend but it's a very close call!

Pleasant appearance, smell and ambience on a busy evening. All boded well for a good seafood meal. Unfortunately I had to wait nearly 15 minutes for my drink order to be taken which rather let the side down. There were further long waits throughout the evening. The food, when it finally came was fine. Nothing to complain about at the prices. Decent portion control, seasoning and accurate cooking. The fish was notably fresh. One fillet of fish hadn't been boned at all properly which was unfortunate in what is obviously a capable kitchen. Chips are good.If the front of house meets the standard of the cooking I'd be happy to eat there again.

We were in the area for one night only, and following directions given in our guest house we found this eatery a short walk away. Just what one could wish for on a wet and windy night. I love fish. He prefers meat. We were both very happy indeed with our meal. His local pork was lean and succulent, on a bed of tasty mash, with well cooked vegetables. My locally caught, and very fresh plaice was cooked to perfection, and a well presented salad, with the tastiest of chips complemented it very well. There were reasonably priced wines available by the glass, which suited us on this occasion. There is one room downstairs with tables laid in what appears to be a converted double fronted shop, with the door to the outside in the centre. It opens into a small covered porch, but without a second door. I had selected a seat alongside this door and I did find a distinct draught at times as customers entered, but it was an exceptionally windy night. The menu was displayed outside so we knew what was available, and although the choice was not vast, we easily found tempting dishes. The service was warm, friendly, and efficient, with modern wooden flooring, and furniture which complemented the stylish yet uncluttered decor. Soon after our arrival around 7.30pm all seats were taken. This included a party of ten local people who had pre booked. I took this for a compliment to the fare on offer. Everything was cooked to order, and on open view in the kitchen at the rear. This small establishment is situated on the promenade in easy reach of amenities, and serves very good food at a reasonable price.

My husband and I picked this restaurant based on the glowing reviews on this site. I have to say that I'm a bit concerned about eating in Penzance for the next 3 days if this is the 2nd best in town. The food was average, at best and we were told the second we walked in that basically every fish dish was sold out. I ordered the bacon-wrapped chicken stuffed with brie. I think "stuffed" was being a bit generous. The brie was non-existent. The bacon was fatty (should have used streaky and not back bacon for something like this) and the chicken was dry, obviously overcooked. When I ordered, the waitress told me that this dish takes a little longer than the others. Perhaps it wouldn't if cooked properly. My husband ordered the pork, which was also overcooked. The service is laughable. It took almost 10 minutes to be recognized for our order. We got our drinks, then another 15 or 20 minutes went by before we got bread. After that, we sat at the table for an additional 10 or 15 minutes with our glasses empty and the waitress didn't even glance our way once in order to us to catch her eye and order more. The prices certainly do not reflect the unprofessionalism of the staff and average presentation of the meal. We were incredibly unimpressed. Skip this and find somewhere else. Definitely not worth your hard-earned money.

I chose Sophia's for a pre-cinema meal on the strength of Trip Advisor's reviews. I was joined by three friends. We ordered from the early bird menu as we had to be at the cinema by 7.The restaurant is lovely - light and airy. Being a Tuesday on a rainy day in March we were the only 4 in the restaurant. Yet somehow they still managed to get our order wrong. We ordered 3 fish and a chicken for a main course. Four fish were delivered to our table. As the waitress placed them on the table she said, 'oh, didn't you order chicken?' Er, yes.To be fair she said they could cook another one but we didn't have time. Even if we had had time it would have meant one of our party sitting there without a meal while the others ate. Considering we were the ONLY people in the restaurant to get the order wrong is pretty inexcusable. The fish was disappointing - the batter was a little bit greasy. Great chips though and the home made bread was to die for. The tartare sauce was bland with no hint of capers, or indeed much of anything. The prawn starter was totally non-descript. A tiny portion which would have been fine had it been packed with flavour but it didn't even do justice to the memories of 1970's prawn cocktails. Visually unappealing and instantly forgettable. So - a great place to go to eat delicious bread ( would go there every day if it was a bakery), not so great if you're expecting to eat what you ordered and feel that you're getting value for money. Even with the early bird prices we all felt it was expensive for what it was. The waitress did offer to pay for my friend's glass of wine but frankly, they should have given her the meal free as we didn't have time to wait for another to be cooked. In my opinion.

The food was extremely nice, but the drinks were expensive - £1.60 for an extremely small bottle of water and nearly £5.00 for a small glass of barely chilled chardonnay. We have just returned from a short holiday in Cornwall. As we were staying near to Penzance, we were drawn to Sophia's by the positive reviews in the Press about it being in the top ten restaurants serving fish.We were shown to our table, which was upstairs and looked out over the Bay. On perusing the menu, it was clear that this was not just a fish restaurant and whilst my wife went for the local fish in breadcrumbs, I opted for the chicken stuffed with Cornish Brie and wrapped in bacon. My wife couldn't stop telling me that this was the best fish and chips she had ever tasted and my chicken was simply gorgeous. All washed down by a lovely South African Sauvignon Blanc. Marvellous. We loved the food so much that we booked again for the following evening, only this time we both went for the fish. The owner buys the fish fresh each day apparently and it shows. We have never tasted fish so wonderful.Don't be put off by the one poor review on here. Either it is bogus or they had no taste buds. It is a lovely restaurant and we received a warm welcome by the staff and the food was good value and simply exceptional

This is our favourite restaurant in Penzance and once again, last night, it did not disappoint. If you are looking fo somewhere to have a quiet, unhurried meal with quality Cornish ingredients and beautifully cooked in a relaxing setting overlooking the sea then this is the place for you. When you first arrive the homemade bread sets the scene, little puffs of white and walnut bread . The fish here is always superbly fresh having been landed at Newlyn that day, last night we tried the monkfish and the scallops - yum. My favourite main course is either the St Buryan pork or the lamb with apricots, the latter last night was served as always with cheddar mash which I wish I could make as well as Sophia's chef, there must be a magic ingredient. Favourite pudd is the Eton Mess - local strawberries that can't be beaten. For drinks, as they stock the award winning Camel Valley wines from Bodmin we usually have the Atlantic Dry, but last night for the first time we had the sparkling wine which was very tasty. And as for the paintings - if you are a lover of Cornish Art and if the conversation flags you can always admire them. So would I recommend this restaurant ? Well if you love unpretentiously presented good food and wine, in a sea front location with a relaxed and freindly atmosphere this is a good place to go. Final tip - if by some chance the smoked haddock served with a poached egg on crushed potatos with a mustard and cream sauce reappears on the menu then go for it -its ambrosia!

My wife and I have just arrived back in Norwich after a 2 week holiday in Devon and Cornwall.Having looked at reviews on the net we plumped for a meal at Sophia's in Penzance. In short, we were completely impressed. The starters (smoky haddock rissotto for my wife and Scallops for me) were delicious. My main dish was the Plaice with Chive Mash - which was well prepared and very very tasty indeed. The plaice was in a crab and prawn creamy sauce which was divine. My wife had the medley of fish which she thoroughly enjoyed. For dessery my trifle was to die for - and what can I say about my wifes reaction to the Chocolate Cake - she was in heaven !As far as the service is concerned - excellent. The owner came out and had a chat with us after the meal - while the waitress was a joy - and we were surpriswed to learn that she is moving to the kitchen as she was lovely.I have seen the negative reference noted above and while everyone is entitled to their opinion, I am aware having talked about it with the owner that no one made her aware of any complaint or criticism which I think is appauling - could a competitor be trying to spread some nasty stuff about - after my visit and the quality of the experience I have my suspisions.A really nice meal and one of the highlights of our holiday. We celebrated my birthday at Sophia's on 23rd July 2009. Our table had a great view over what has to be the most beautiful bay in Cornwall, and the service attentive and efficient, with a degree of young Cornish charm! We began by sharing a crab risotto. My husband and I do not have large appetites but we do love good food, and extra plate and cutlery was not a problem. The risotto was plentiful and creamy, with lots of white crab meat. We then followed this with lobster that had been caught that day and cooked in the restaurant, that was juicy and succulent. It was accomanied by salad, and a siced mayonnaise, and was simply delicious. Desert was imaginative and absolutely gorgeous, we had almond tart accompanied by amaretto ice cream.Lobster cost £16.50 for half a large one, very reasonable for one that is fresh and locally caught. The menu has a good variety of dishes, and not bought in ready made. We have eaten here twice since it reopened in April. The eat early deal (before 6.30pm) is really good value, with two courses fro £15.50, 3 for £18.00. The menu for this is limited (no lobster!!) but there is plenty to choose from and makes decisions easier! There is a good choice of wine, including some excellent Camel Valley ones. The restaurant is right to pride its self on using good quality local produce. The restaurant is simple in decor, but friendly. The only downside for me is the fact that it is closed from October to April!

We have tried Sophias 3 times now over the last 3 years. It's a shame they don't do lunch any more as we usually stay in St Mawes and the drive back after dinner is not the best. (Have you ever sat in the driving rain waiting for the King Harry ferry, not realising it had moored up hours before? Felt a bit daft after that one!)It could be very easy to miss out on this little restaurant and we only found it as we were doing a bit of a trip round the coast via Penzance promenade. It's simply done, but well done with quite classical and unpretentious food. I usually eat fish when in Cornwall, as I presume it will be fresher than my local supermarket back home and the fish here has been spot on every visit, fresh as a daisy and well cooked. It has the feel of my local neighbourhood restaurant in Herts - not overly sophisticated, not trendy, but warm and reliable.

Sophias looked nice from the outside, sadly that's one of the few positive things I have to say about it. Other positives were that the staff were friendly and they had a nice Chardonnay on the wine list. The food lefta lot to be desired, and overall we left the place thinking that we could've done better ourselves. The meal was average - expensive in price, which just added insult to injury. If it was cheap we probably wouldn't have expected so much.I had the beef stew, with horseradish mash. Only the mash was extremely dry (even with stew which is quite a mean feat), and it didn't have any horeseradish in it. I left most of it. My partner had something with chedar mash. Again his mash was dry and had clearly just been reheated in the microwave. We didn't stick around for dessert, we went to get an ice cream from the shop instead. The atmosphere wasn't great either, the whole place (and the experience in general) being a bit soulless and unappealling.Don't bother with this place, get yourself some fish and chips instead. We wished we had.

I wasnt really sure what I wanted to eat and my partner chose Sophia's for dinner. We were given a lovely cozy table by the window where we could look out over the bay.My partner had a starter of crumbed fish and then pan fried salmon. I had beef medallians on mashed potato for main followed by sticky toffee pudding for dessert. Both were excellent, the beef cooked to perfection and plenty of caramel sauce and clotted cream to accompany my sticky toffee pudding.Complimentary bread with olive oil was also served before entree. All the food was delicious and the servings generous. We were both well and truly stuffed after only two courses each. The service was also excellent, sufficient time between courses to allow for digestion but not so much that you became hungry again. Waitress service was also attentive but not constant or annoying. The meal was not cheap, approximately £45, which included the two courses each plus one drink (beer/wine). However, from looking at other menus in Penzance this seemed competitive with what you would pay elsewhere. I would not hesitate to go back to Sophia's if I am ever back in Penzance.

Stumbled across the Apple tree after the lands end park run. What an amazing find. All plant based (although they are currently also offering cows milk in drinks if wanted) which is great by us. Delic

A nice location and views. Food was good (a fish finger sandwich, and some scallops), chips a bit over salty, and scallops lacked in wild garlic, but generally good. Let down by service, we were initi
