Eliot Arms in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

We've visited quite a few pubs over the years, and especially since moving (back) to Cornwall, 20+ years ago. We both think that this is as near a perfect pub as you can find and in every way - outside kerb appeal, history, "proper" pub inside, ambiance, gcracking beers, amazing quality food and wonderfully pleasant (normal) staff. I think it's my idea of Heaven.

Great food and a tireless waiter cum barman cum server cum check out till person. And he did it all with a smile and was courteous and helpful at all times. Eliot Arms you have a gem of a hard worker there.

If you want a proper traditional pub look no further. The food was fantastic real home cooking and plenty of it. The staff were happy, friendly and extremely helpful. We booked a table which I would advise to do as they were busy but that made a lovely atmosphere. We will definitely be going again and telling our friends.

We told on arrival there was no space for the dog. Disappointing having set our hearts on certain meals and having travelled far.

We came here last year for a pre Christmas lunch and enjoyed it so much we returned this year. The menu is interesting and varied, the food is top notch, very reasonably priced and the portions are very generous. The pub has a lovely olde world charm and the atmosphere is cosy, warm and welcoming. Would highly recommend a visit, you won’t be disappointed.

As always fabulous food and good service. Was there for Christmas work lunch. Whole pub was full but meals came out in good time everyone had different starters and mains although I use the pub on a regular basis the other guests don't some it was their first time they will all be back and several said they would bring family back. Thanks guts made a great Christmas location.

A lovely quirky pub serving good food

Food was great here. I have given service a 4 as there were two servers who gave different levels of service and interaction, but overall good. Only negatives are that the tables could do with a good scrub / revarnish as they are a little sticky, and maybe a refresh of the bench seat cushions.

Had an amazing meal. Hot, fresh food. Beautiful 15th century pub. Very busy but still gave good service.

We stopped into this pub for a quick bite to eat and absolutely loved it. Such a hidden gem with a great cosy atmosphere and friendly staff! The food is fantastic value for money, and very generous portions. Perfect pub grub in a warm atmospheric setting. Will definitely try to go back!

Food of reasonable standard but beware the prices on the menu do not include VAT and there is no mention of this fact when ordering which makes the prices quite expensive!!

Recommended to us by the owner of the nearby campsite we were staying at (Poole Farm CL) so booked a table for a Sunday roast dinner.Portions were huge so you won't go hungry here!.I had roast beef, my husband roast pork.Plenty of meat and 4 different veggies plus roast potatoes and a Yorkshire pud.The pub is full of character with lots of memorabilia on the walls and loads of horse brasses nailed to the beams. Staff were all very friendly and despite being a busy Sunday they all remained calm and efficient and nothing was too much trouble for them.Would definitely recommend if you are in the area.

Went for lunch with my daughter and grandson, we had ham egg and chips and venison burger and chips both came with a salad and were very good value for money.

Food was OK, lots of it and reasonably priced, lots of stuff on the walls and everywhere, typical old English pub, could do with a freshen up, tables are very sticky where the vanish is so old. But overall an OK evening

Very friendly, good food, interesting building with lots of history. Good value at about £30/head for 2 courses and a drink. Will return again.

We went for a meal with Sue's brother and his missus for a belated birthday present to us both. It was amazing the food was out of this world. We live in truro but we will be back.

Traditional English pub with friendly staff and hearty portions. Don’t read any more reviews just go and order the pie of the day - outstanding.

Booked in for 5 of us for our usual Wed lunch date .I will rate the Elliot at 9/10 Superb food plenty of it and a nice relaxed atmosphere Will definitely go again

Cracking historic old Inn, full of character, serving great food and beer. Loved it

Avoid is the best advice we can give. Admit we did book a table for two, with a dog, however the grubbiest pub we have ever been in, we were ushered into a what I describe as a storage room/darts room which had an overpowering smell of stale lager full of grime, the furniture was literally in tatters….. just awful. It was that bad we walked out before ordering.

Ate here today, normally reasonable pub food, today’s was truly awful. Not helped by having to wait 45 minutes for the meal either. When it arrived my husbands curry, looked more like a plate of dog food, huge chunks of bland chewy meat, he said no real taste of curry, bland rice. My dish was even worse, steak and kidney pie, very obviously microwaved, as pastry was real soft on top, no seasoning in the filling, pastry underneath was still raw, accompanied by undercooked potatoes, almost raw peas, the carrots and broccoli, whilst cooked had not been seasoned at all. A very disappointing meal, needless to say we didn’t bother with desserts. When paying, they charged for the whole meal, even though I’d told them I wasn’t happy with it, my husband refused to pay for one, so it was begrudgingly taken off. Was then told we don’t have many complaints, really! As a professional chef I’d never send food out of this standard, maybe their customers have very low expectations!

Small and intimate with plenty of charm. We found this place after walking from the train station at the end of the line from Launceston. It's a tough walk up a savage hill but the beer at the top was a Proper Job 😀

Old school pub with proper home cooked food at good prices. Can’t go wrong. Steak and ale pie and the local ales gets the big thumps up.

It was the last night if my stay in Launceston, and I treated the whole family (6 plus myself) to s thank you dinner evening. First of all, the welcoming atmosphere was strikingly lovely, from the very first minute. The menu was better than I expected as I'd not been there before...but goodness..the variation was superb. Being a little traditional however I plumped for the home made steak and Ale pie. What a brilliant choice! I've not eaten a better such pie, ever...and everyone else seemed delighted with their choices as well. The service was spot in, even though the place was extremely busy, yet we were treated as if we were "the only ones" there. I cannot recommend the place highly enough. Including three rounds of drinks, I was extremely happy with the cost...for 7 people..we all loved the evening and the staff made it an unforgettable experience. Total 5 star, top notch, all the way. Thank you. I shall return. Phil

The Elliot Arms may be actually filthy, but their food is the best and the biggest in all Cornwall and I couldn’t love them more!

Absolutely love this cosy, quirky pub. We visit every time we are down in Cornwall. Lots to look at, nice s n u g, portion sizes plenty. You won't leave hungry. Food quality, home cooked. Relaxed atmosphere and good service. You won't be disappointed!

This is one of the most fascinating pubs I've ever been to, it dates from the 14c it has loads of "stuff" to look at from bygone days, the staff were amazingly friendly, knowledgeable,and full of information, the food was amazing and the portions plenty, if you're in the area please visit you will not be disappointed..we will return..5*

Lovely old interesting pub. Hundreds of clocks and old photos. But the best thing is the food. The homemade steak pie is to die for! It is divine. Am going again today, and everything is crossed that’s it’s on today. 😂🤞🏻

We called in for a late lunch en route to Maenporth and it didn’t disappoint. Lovely staff, great service and exceptional food. The portions are massive and great value for money. Will definitely visit again when next in the area.

We visited last Friday lunchtime and had the most wonderful meal, cooked to perfection, seasoning was perfect and just amazing for a pub.

Delicious though and good treatment. The place is a very old house that has a lot of charm.

We were assigned a very nice place, the service was great and the food was good. Unfortunately the steak didn't taste good and was rather tough, there was a lot going on, maybe that was the reason.

Visited for the first time with family. Lovely old historical pub. Enjoyed reading about the history. Food was hearty and delicious. Service with a smile. Have given 4 stars as not many vegetarian options and variety of ales a little lacking

Read the reviews and our experience exactly the same. Wonderful welcome after squeezing us in. Food definitely homemade (you just know don’t you) and the serving size was enormous. Not overly expensive but you get what you pay for. We all agreed we would definitely go back here at any opportunity.

DOG UNFRIENDLY PUB We tried to eat in the pub, lunchtime saturday 20th July 2024. Because we had our dog with us, we were not allowed to eat inside the pub. We found a dog friendly pub nearby.

I had the steak and kidney pie, nice big chunks of steak, not overly keen on the kidney, I bet the steak and ale is much nicer, but we went back for another one. The staff were brilliant, very helpful, and pleasant, a lovely atmosphere. The vegetables were very nice, probably local produce.

Update: Visited again tonight, they very kindly found us a table as walk ins and it was even better than the first visit! 😋 pic of my lamb chops attached. Amazing place, so much history inside the walls, very traditional, Good sized portions, lovely food, reasonably priced. Staff are very friendly and we had a lovely visit, our first time and will visit again, one improvement could be a lunch menu. :) thanks for having us.

Great experience in a typical pub with incredibly great food, huge portions and delicious beer. Dogs welcome. Pre-order a table if possible. Tip: take the approach from Launceston, the approach from Bude is adventurous.

There were 7 of us, a dog and an 8 week old baby, when booking they were very accommodating to our specific needs. A very old traditional pub full of locals drinking and people eating. Food was all home made, hot and tasty. Service was good and friendly. Only downside is the loos, ladies is at the end of the building prob in a single brick added extension, walls damp and mouldy, not so nice. ☹

We hadn’t booked but called in on chance and were accommodated within 15 minutes. A busy pub with atmosphere and lots of nooks and crannies. The staff were friendly and attentive and the food was really lovely. We ordered the lamb and the lasagne and the portions were large as well as tasty. Fresh sauces (no sachets) and a choice of potatoes, curly fries etc. this was good because so many places just tend to do chips. Lots of interesting artefacts around the pub and just the happy buzz of people out for the evening. Recommended if you’re in the area.

A proper old-school country pub, I loved it. There were generous portions of good food and the staff were really friendly. We could take our dog in too, even though she is a pain and barks too much.

A. Olde worldie pub full of nostalgia. Was recommended and didn't disappoint. Made very welcome with the 2 pooches, and was given a quiet room which was appreciated. Food and hospitality was of excellent standard. We booked in advance, as I would recommend as we saw several disappointed parties turned away.

Excellent food, olde world pub, meals were large and good value for money, lots of homemade dishes. Make sure you book, went on a Wednesday evening around 6.30 and had to wait about 40 minutes as they were fully booked.

what a disappointment after reading the other reviews of this pub. The food was quantity over quality and each meal could have served 2 people easily - should they have wished to eat it. The whole place was oldie worldie but should have been a lot cleaner, we would not return nor the couple we ate with there.

Visited here recently. Great food, had surf & turf....delicious. Partner had sirloin steak. Both cooked to perfection. Very generous portions. Nice, but busy, atmosphere. Would definitely recommend.

Lovely old pub, good beer. Still is.

We had our first disappointing meal on our trip today at the Eliot Arms. The pub was adorable but the food was not great-and my son’s burger was the worst he has ever had. Service was not great-they reluctantly took a pound or two off the cost for a meal that my son couldn’t even make himself eat when he was starving. My seafood tasted like it was heated up from a frozen bag of budget seafood from a discount store-it it was alright-but do you go out to eat for something that is just All right? I would not waste your time or money eating here. My husband did say the beer was good so maybe just skip the food. Go to the Golden Lion in Port Issac instead! The difference between these two pubs was night and day (my son had a delicious burger at the Golden Lion-probably the best he ever tasted was his comment after that meal--in contrast to the worst burger EVER at the Eliot Arms-he could not eat it) . If you want a good meal-I would not bother with the Eliot Arms and definitely don’t have the burger-unless you like stale bread and meat that tastes like it is made of cardboard and is cooked so long that any moisture it may have had is gone.

We happened upon this pub on route to southern Cornwall and what a find!! A lovely old world pub with lots of snug areas and a great atmosphere. We had a fantastic lunch, really tasty. The staff were excellent.

Mid week lunchtime visit but pub busy with elderly diners. Main meals £16.00 - £20.00 sort of range. Big portions and well cooked. Interesting history to this very old pub. Carpark available and just 2 minutes off the A30 west bound.
