The best restaurants serving British food in Moray Highlands and Islands

We went to the Quaich cafe on Saturday 4th January 2025 as a family of 6 adults and 4 children. They were able to accommodate us at short notice having only booked that morning. I was seriously impressed not only by the excellent food and the variety available, the overall experience was excellent. From the ambiance, to the friendly staff, to the speed of service and the variety of menu items available. The meal we had was excellent. Two of us had the Highland cheeseburger with the addition of haggis. Probably one of the best burgers I have ever had. Some of the children had Mac n Cheese which was delicious. Without exception our entire party thought the meal was really good. The quality of the ingredients was excellent. The prices were reasonable and fair. The staff were friendly, efficient and very accommodating. Not much more I can say really except we will be back at the Quaich cafe with the family again in the near future. Keep up the good work. We arrived after walking from Craigellachie. Our walking instructions had said that the owners would pick us up at Ballindalloch Station, but when we phoned we were told that this was no longer the case, and we had to walk another 1.5 miles in the pouring rain. After a struggle to work out what direction the hotel was in, we contacted the owner again who didn't seem to know where we were. We eventually worked it out with google Maps. However the hotel was pleasant and the showers were particularly good. There is a set menu at £30 per head, offering only one choice for each course. We would have preferred to maybe have a choice of 2 menus. The rooms were good and the staff were lovely. We found the drinks to be expensive. Breakfast was nice and the lady who serves breakfast was lovely.

I had one of the best flat whites that I've ever had in my life. The microfoam was perfect. I'd definitely come back, and highly recommend this spot.

I bought lunch here today and really wish I hadn’t bothered, the soup was supposed to be cream of mushroom but was anything but creamy. It was this with really large pieces of mushroom which were difficult to eat with a spoon. The cheese scone was a strange colour and had a really weird taste. It used to be a great place to eat but was sold recently and is to be avoided. I will not return!

A warm & friendly welcome on arrival as usual, I stay here 2/3 times a year passing through on business, can’t always get booked as this can be a busy hotel due to the good value but lucky to have got the last room for tonight. The restaurant menu is incredible & all freshly cooked (no pinging of plastic microwave food going on here) with the Chefs specials being added to an already superb choice of the main menu with all the main fish & meats being sourced locally, (the Scottish breakfast is very satisfying too) at the bar you’ll find some really tasty locally brewed beers (inc IPA’s) on offer too, you’ll not go wrong here. For me, it’s the staff, reception, waiting & bar staff all being very attentive, they can’t do enough for you & always very helpful, polite & professional. To the management/owners, congratulations, you have a good team under you doing a great job making your guests welcome & doing you proud. Can’t wait to come back 👌

Delicious home cooked meals and great service

Excellent food, timely service and great atmosphere. What more could we ask for, especially just at the start of the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival 2025.

Very disappointing we came here today Friday 25th April with friends for lunch after they wanted to try I have had a bad experience before and this time was not any better horrendous venue… I had chicken fillets which were very dry and overcooked my friend had the mussels which were clearly frozen as some were still cold.. my husband had the seafood linguini which was awful so much liquid again filled with frozen prawns and mussels avoid with all costs I have since reported to the EHO OVER THE FOOD AND CLEANLINESS PLEASE AVOID! Staff also very especially a Middle Aged English man who was going about I think so r training would serve him well. Have given this establishment a second chance today but it was worse than before so will definitely not return again

Let me kick off by saying what not to expect: this is not a fancy hotel with subservient staff catering to your every whim. At this place, you are quite literally a guest, joining the owner and his family in their house. If this aligns with your expectations, then you are in a good place. The owner, Tom, runs the bar, where your pre-dinner drinks are accompanied by friendly locals, happily sharing a story or two on the day's events. The bar is stocked with a nice selection of reasonably priced whisky (Scotch of course) and gins, catering to every taste. Dinner is a convivial affair, where conversation is quickly intermingled between local patrons and guests staying in the hotel, while the menu offers a nice selection of local food, lovingly prepared by the lady of the house. All in all, a most excellent experience, completely in line with our expectations of a more rural hotel/restaurant.

Worst restaurant in Elgin. Words cannot explain the hatred we felt leaving after a work lunch. From the staff to the food everything was not enjoyable. Should definitely take tips from others on how to run a restaurant. Can only imagine what the hotel itself is like.
