Nice environment and the decor was good. We had a nice dinner but the waitress we had was very abrupt and quite frankly unfriendly so we weren't sure how to approach that. She told us we could sit at a table but we had to go order drinks after no service came. We also asked for the dessert menu but it never appeared so we decided best was to leave. Throughout there were only 2 tables being served so we didn't understand why we were left, understandable if busy. The younger blonde lass at the bar was very nice and apologetic for the bad service which somewhat made up for the bad experience. Overall it was alright the food was nice enough but for a quiet weekday I expected more.

We had a lovely lunch and beers at the Mash Tun on Saturday. It was very busy, but we were lucky enough to get a table. I had hot smoked salmon Nicoise. Steve has mussels. We both had a pint of IPA.

On a snowy day we visited the Mush Tun for lunch with friends. Lunch was absolutely delicious and food was of a very good quality . As you can imagine the bar was packed with an amazing range of whiskey and I was intrigued to walk round and read about them . Naturally my husband and friend tried a few . Lovely comfortable pub with a great atmosphere. The staff were very efficient, helpful and knowledgeable about whiskey. Can’t wait to visit again and stay in the hotel attached .

Great for a casual night out with an extensive whiskey list in the Speyside region. Also came back for a second evening and enjoyed a tasty dinner. Best French Onion I’ve ever had!

Started off well - seated, ordered drink and food. French onion soup came out fast. It was tasty at first until I realised the bottom half was pretty cold. Chicken and pasta for mains - this was lovely Princess punch was a very nice cocktail. Service was dreadful - didn’t ask any questions , sat with an empty glass since the beginning of my main.

Stayed here for a long weekend with my wife. Lovely little hotel (inn style). Food is great, service is fantastic and the bar is so welcoming and friendly, not loud or crowded. We’re not huge whisky folks so although the bar has an UNBELIEVABLE selection, it’s not something we tried. My only gripe would be that the room was quite small and we struggled to spend anytime in there, and there was also only one chair, so nowhere we could both sit.

One of the biggest problems with small idyllic towns such as Aberlour is that food tends not to be great. However, this is not the case with The Mash Tun. First off, the menu is simple—not lacking but simple in an entirely positive way. It's so easy to go through and find something just for you. There are lots of vegan, pescatarian, and regular options, making it open to virtually anyone. Of course, the quality and taste of the food is what matters the most, and this is one of the best restaurants I have been to this year. I have the pleasure of visiting many wonderful locations around the world, and this place really did blow me away with how incredible the food was. Honestly, I miss it, and I wish I could be back sometime soon. Oh, and the ice cream is wonderful.

Having visited The Mash Tun regularly for several years , very disappointed to find it has changed significantly , and not for the better. Decor upgraded, nice. Menu very limited, one vegetarian meal and bland mushroom dish. Service ok, but waitress had her jumper tied round her waist, very abrupt and dull, no smile, no chat… sad to see a very popular fun place become dull and void of personality. An expensive meal with no atmosphere. Won’t bother driving the distance to eat here again.

This was the first time I have visited the ‘Tun since the previous owners sold up. It has changed a lot and not for the better. The menu was a poor shadow of its previous self and vegetarian options were sparse. The service was again not a patch on previous years. I had a rib eye which was, to be fair, cooked nicely but from a menu with only 5 or 6 choices it was the only choice for me. My better half is not a fan of red meat which limited the menu for her to fish and chips. Previously we could eat there three nights on a row and not repeat a dish. Sadly we won’t be in a rush to return.

We have been to the Mash Tun a couple of times before. We were surprised to see that the basic lunchtime menu hasn't changed in over a year. The Specials Board seemed the place to go for me. I recalled a comment by Gordon Ramsay to avoid these, and frankly it seems he's right. last time I chose the seafood gnocci, which was just the spare stuff from other meals with gnocci added. Tasty enough. This time I went for a dish that included haggis, chilli and lamb. It was served as a mince over a serving of pasta. Quite tasty, but again evidently a rehash of other meals. Hubby had steak. Agreed it was melt in the mouth, but it was also expensive. For dessert I went for cranachan, which was a bit boring -more cream than anything else with a few raspberries. He chose crumble, which was hot, served with ice cream, obvs, cold. As I say nothing really wrong, just not as good as I'd like for a bill of over £100. The atmosphere was great and the service exceptional.

The restaurant and bar are excellent along with their food and service. We stayed in the Macallan, which we picked as perhaps the best room. The toilet did not seem to work well. The lighting was minimal in its entry and closet. Since we left early, we used a flash light to make sure we had our things. Worse than that for 3 nights, there was no room service of towels, cleaning, or trash removal. We asked where to leave the keys as we were leaving early and told to leave them in the bar, which was closed at 7 am. I walked the building outside, finding no place, I left them in small swith door and emailed them as to where the key was. They seem to be focused on the restaurant and bar and pay little attention to the rooms pr their guests?

We had a lovely night at the Mash Tun while staying in Aberlour. Beautiful inside, warm, welcoming staff and (very) dog friendly - our pup was delighted to get multiple treats from the staff. I have seen other reviews about service, but this is a small, busy restaurant with only a few staff, so it was slightly slower than normal. Nothing that spoiled the experience if you have a little patience and they all worked tirelessly and provided such friendly service with a smile which was much appreciated. Food and drinks were delicious, so much so that myself and my partner returned the next day for breakfast. Would highly recommend Dinner or Breakfast to anyone passing through.

Spent the day touring distillery’s and checked into The Mash Tun. Oh my word!!! What a GEM! The building alone has such character! The team that runs it could not have been more accommodating; so kind, so generous, hard workers!! The Mash Tun is right next to a park that overlooks River Spey; that was our view, could not have been better! We walked down to the river and sat drinking our tastes of Whiskey. Then we went to The Mash Tun Restaurant. So much fun. The food was great, the waiter, Grame, was absolutely a delight in meeting every need and visiting, with such joy. Our room was very comfortable and quiet. The bath was large, with great shower. In the 5 B&B’s we have stayed in, my husband said The Mash Tun had the BEST breakfast!! Our only regret is that we chose to stay only 1 night in Speyside at Mash Tun, so much more to see and do! So much more sitting by that peaceful river with a good whiskey. Well done Management! You are the right track!!!

The food was good. The service was extremely bad, our server was Kelly and gave us the feeling that she was in a bad mood. We really would have liked to stay the whole evening as we are guests in the hotel, but the table was not cleaned and we did not feel welcome at all. When our main dishes were served the plates were just thrown onto the table. We asked for the whisky menu, after quite a long time the menu was collected for other guests. We were not asked if we wish to order some drams but the Menüs were just taken away. It was our second time in the Mash Tun, sadly this time was quite disappointing and disheartening.

As part of a significant birthday celebration my grown up boys surprised me with not only a trip to the Spey Whisky region, but also treated me to dinner and drinks in this well reviewed pub and eatery. From the moment we walked through the door the welcome by the staff was friendly, accommodating and relaxing. Sharon and Kate had the perfect balance of being efficient and professional, but married this with a personal touch when recommending drinks and food. The food was well presented, delicious and the perfect portion size, again with staff being attentive, but not intrusive throughout the service. I would wholeheartedly recommend anyone staying in the region to pop in and visit this well established and reviewed local asset, where you will be looked after by staff who clearly have a passion and flair to look after their customers. We have visited every day in our trip for just a coffee, light bite or a drink and consistently been met with a smile, good banter and a first class service.

From the initial arrival and poor welcome at this well known establishment the mood was clearly set by the staff. Very abrupt, unapologetic and extremely rude. This is the reason I tend not to visit many restaurants in Moray....... poor service, especially in a tourist busy hotpot. Shame as the people of Moray are genuinely nice and accepting. Having visited the mash tun numerous times with a great atmosphere, drink and food selection along with fantastic service , we decided to visit on a day out. very poor selection of beers, menu has not changed and is very expensive for what you get and the older waitress is on a par with Kate Hopkins. Number 1 in Aberlour? Why.......?

Was looking forward to having lunch here. . On entrance to the bar/ dining area, we were asked abruptly if we had a reservation, as if we should have booked and not just walked in. . The place was empty by the way. . The bar area inside was tired and looked a bit grubby. We ordered from a menu that was not nearly as inspired as the prices on it. I had Brie and beetroot tart, with "dressed" leaves. I wasn't sure what was in the tart as I couldn't find the beetroot, but there was a blob of something sweet and quite bland in the centre of the tart, with what might have contained tiny cubes of beetroot. To note that in 2019 a previous diner also had the same conundrum with the same item on the menu, so they don't seem to change their menu, and the veg of the day back in 2019 was green beans and carrots, which was what I was also offered today in 2021! I opted for the dressed leaves instead. The dressed leaves were so tired that one of the leaves left mush on my plate and there was a bitterness. They were obviously from a packet. The "dressing" was a thick unappetising gloop on top of the leaves. I was expecting the leaves to be tossed in a tangy dressing, but only the top few leaves had dressing on. My other half had the gammon steak and said it was probably the most mediocre gammon steak he had had in a while and very thin. He had two mushrooms and a halved tomato with it. Neither looking that appetising. If they are going to charge restaurant prices, they need to provide food that has the quality and imagination to match it.

The Mash Tun is an amazing place for food! I have been here many times but this visit was the first for about 4 years. I was nervous if it would live up to my fading memories…..I’m very pleased to say it was as excellent as I remember!! There is parking to the rear or alternatively you can park on the Main Street with a short walk down the side street. Inside the decor is very aesthetically pleasing on the eye, a decent bar greets you and the wooden floor is amazing. There is free Wi-fi offered, an excellent whisky collection with every year represented from 1952 onwards….get your wallet out for the older ones!! Or just enjoy the excellent display. The menu is very good indeed, a decent mixture of items available just as I remember! There is also a kids menu, the bar is very well stocked indeed. The quality of food was always excellent from memory with a lot of things being home made, I especially remember the desserts and the steaks being of particular note! Today I had the bacon, Brie and cranberry sauce baguette followed by the pear crumble with ice cream. The food was amazing! Just as excellent as I remember! The staff were friendly and efficient we enjoyed a good chat with them both were new since my last visit. With this place being dog friendly it’s a favourite of mine anyway but the excellent food and service make it a real treasure in Aberlour. If you’re in the area you would be crazy not to visit the Mash Tun in my opinion.

We arrived wet and smelly after another leg of the speyside way that started in Spean Bridge. We were greeted by an extremely friendly and cheerful waitress. Ordered our food (pulled pork pie and tender pork steak) which were both superb. The veges were cooked to perfection, the meat was tasty and tender and the sauces complimented the food wonderfully. The same was true of the delicious desserts - best sticky toffee pudding outside of Cartmel. Would have happily paid for this in a posh London restaurant for twice the price! We enjoyed the service and meal so much we decided to stay the night (instead of another wet night camping in a small 2 person tent). We visited during the Covid crisis, so the staff apologised for being short staffed...but the two servers they had on duty were so great we barely noticed. They were super knowledgeable about their amazing whiskey selection (their collection is 300+ if I recall correctly), and were able to recommend something great to our tastes, without automatically going for the most expensive, which I found to be very thoughtful. The food was really great - the salt and pepper squid is some of the best I've ever had (but a smallish serving - if your family likes to share starters, you might need two!) The veggie tempura on the other hand was a very generous serving, as were the mains and dessert, and all absolutely delicious. I was impressed by the range of options on the menu! Not so fancy as a gastropub, but still more than a standard burger/steak/fish and chips option. It was a really nice balance. All in all, even if you're not a whiskey fan, I'd absolutely recommend visiting if you're in the area! It's a great selection of great food, and friendly staff--the perfect pub experience.

This was well spaced out from other patrons and not too bad a day weather wise so enjoyable. We had chicken fillets and tomato soup, both were good. I would definitely recommend the chicken fillets, best I've had in a while, really juicy chicken breast. We were served very quickly I thought and there were only two members of staff on. Typical Scottish summer weather left us cold and soggy so we were in good need of warming up and some good food.As we entered we were warmly greeted by one of the two young bar staff who explained covid procedures and showed us to our table. A huge effort has been put in to making the space safe yet welcoming. We were quite hungry and so settled on two courses each. My partner started with the 'Highland Pudding' and I had the broccoli and Stilton soup. The portions were extremely generous. Although delicious, the 'Highland Pudding' was a little bit greasey but still very enjoyable. The soup was just brilliant. The ratio of broccoli to Stilton was just perfect and I honestly could have eaten it all day.For our mains my partner ordered the steak pie and I ordered the baguette of hot beef, caramelised onions and cheddar. The pie was superb and the baguette was tasty. We both should have asked for no chips as we were just so stuffed.Great food, great service. Happy to support a local establishment. Thank you.

This was my first pub/restaurant visit since the lockdown. The staff has done a terrific job at making the site safe for both themselves and the guests. Food and service was great.

The Mash Tun have put a lot of effort into complying with the new regulations as a result of the pandemic. They have done a great job here, really feel safe and comfortable. We were the first guests to stay since being allowed to open and we had a wonderful experience. We stayed on the Glenlivet room overlooking the Spey, clean and tidy, great roll top bath. No skimping on the extras, plenty of coffee/tea, robes and slippers too. We enjoyed two very good rump streaks on the restaurant/bar. Excellent choice of whisky too.

Well, in the small towns the local restaurants have a specific schedule: not working 7 days a week. That’s why that very Sunday two rock & whisky pilgrims had to drive by taxi from Dufftown to Aberlour for a dinner. We did a smart thing having booked a table in advance.Local ale for aperitif with Smoked Salmon - that was a Scottish signature thing, as usual. Then time came for Sirloin Steak and Chicken Breast - everything of a real home-made style. Bottle of red wine just emphasised that impression.Sticky Pudding - another UK signature thing - became our ending there, but not at all: cigar + dram of whisky at veranda while admiring the quietness of Speyside made us feel a harmony.

The Mash Tun pub is Whiskey orientated with a phenomenal number of Whiskey’s to sample. The food here is fantastic with recommended Whiskey’s to try with each. We Enjoyed a two course meal with pudding and the Sticky Toffee is to die for. ❤️

I was staying in the area and decided to drop by the Mash Tun, excellent service from the staff there. I especially enjoyed the steak pie I had there - far better than those of the supposed "award winning" butcher's of Aberlour. Would highly recommend to anyone.

As an industry professional when you usually find someone with Kevin’s knowledge and expertise, it comes with a pompous attitude and pedantic service and this couldn’t be further from how Kevin actually is. Welcoming and nice and absolutely willing to spend time with you to find you the best dram. His whisky menu is remarkable and yet discerning. You can tell he and the staff make selections carefully and are not just buying bottles for an award list or menu. The fact that he takes the opinions and tasting notes of his staff to put on the menu says a great deal about his integrity and their ability to offer the best whiskies in the world. Definitely explore their flight menus. While whisky is the impetus, the food is wonderful so make sure you grab food as it was some of the best we encountered in the highlands, a step up in quality.

After a day of whiskey tours and tastings along with a nice hike along the river and to the falls it was time for a beverage and the Mash Tun fit the need. The bar has an extensive whiskey display and the bartender was very knowledgeable. We were there in the afternoon so the pub was not busy. It is off the main road but not difficult to find.

Stopped for a lunch while walking through Aberlour on the Speyside way. Food was fine, whisky was good and the place is perfectly located beside the old railway and walking path. Can't rate 5 stars as the steak pie had a false top (which I hate) and the veggies were a little under-cooked for my taste. Dessert was amazing though!

Spent a week in the Highlands distillery visiting and whisky tasting. Stayed the night in our rented motorhome at a caravan site a mile outside Aberlour so walked in for a few drams and some shopping. Dog friendly and very friendly. Didn’t get a chance to eat here as it was already fully booked but hope to next visit. But the whisky range is amazing with a massive list.

First off, on your visit to Scotland, you will meet the mostly friendly and helpful people, the Mash Tun is no exception. Booked early for Dramathon race and was just right for the three of us guys. Book early, it was full around our stay in later October. Beautiful location, Abelour room was nicely appointed right by the River Spey walking path. Breakfast was a full Scottish spread, dinners were a great menu, too. Would recommend reservations for dinner, it is a good testament that locals come there a lot.

The building alone is worth a visit and once you go inside you will presented with an extensive selection of whiskies. The staff are knowledgeable and have created their own huge volume of tasting notes. They can quickly narrow down a selection of whiskies for you based on what you know you like and how much you’re willing to spend.

What a wonderful evening, we dropped in for a pint and a nip and ended up taking advantage of a dinner “no-show” and eating at the bar. The Mash Tun has an excellent and broad selection of scotch and other single malt whiskies. For dinner we shared the locally smoked salmon as a starter, which was excellent, then I had the pork steak in a pepper sauce which was very good indeed. For both courses we tried the paired whisky, which worked! The food is wonderful but tables need to be booked a day or so in advance. Definitely recommended.

I bought lunch here today and really wish I hadn’t bothered, the soup was supposed to be cream of mushroom but was anything but creamy. It was this with really large pieces of mushroom which were difficult to eat with a spoon. The cheese scone was a strange colour and had a really weird taste. It used to be a great place to eat but was sold recently and is to be avoided. I will not return!

Looked wonderful but sadly it is not dog friendly. Dogs not allowed. You could sit outside with a dog i think. Google very misleading as we chose Rockpool especially for being dog friendly.

Sooooooo overpriced!!! I got a roll that the bread disintegrated when I picked it up and 2 slices of just cooked bacon for £4.80 hilariously i paid £2 for a tattie scone that was uncooked 🤢 i had taken 2 bites out of the roll before I realised that it was warm but not cooked. The others I was with said their food was edible but for the price would it expect it to be at least nice 🤷♀️ save your money and go somewhere nicer for breakfast! The restaurant was cold, we sat with jackets on as most others were doing as well which didn't help with the non welcoming atmosphere. The lady serving was chatting to people who she must have known. I had to wave at her after waiting 15 minutes to get served. My last point is the 1 toilet. There must be others but there was no mention of another toilet by the waitress when she seen a queue of customers waiting.
