Incredible restaurant with stunning views. The food is simply gorgeous. Michelin standard food with none of the pretentions.

Mallaig is a delightful little town and I always enjoy my visits very much. However it can sometimes be a bit of a challenge to find an eaterie open in the winter months! (Thank goodness for the Co-op). However I fell lucky this time and in the centre of town - directly across from the Co-op - was The Tea Garden Cafe. Friendly welcome, nice relaxed chat (despite being busy) and the most delicious sandwich. Everything foodwise reeked of freshness and high quality ingredients. An impressive establishment and enjoyed my visit very much. Thanks all.

Do not make any requests, or you will be met with an intimidating stare and a passive/aggressive response. It made our stay quite difficult, but we stuck it out as it was peak season at the time. Also, our room more suited to a single bed category - with a double bed squeezed into it, there was barely enough room to move along one side of the bed and around the end of the bed, as it was so close to the wall on two sides. There are plenty of other good B&B's in the area who will be glad to welcome you.

This cafe within the same building as the heritage centre is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday through the summer season and staffed by volenteers who prepare all the food, soup cakes etc themselves. This is good homely food. I was informed that on the days the cafe is not open there is a mobile van serving pizzas and crepes parked in the car park. There are also toilets at the centre which is a bonus.

I would give the hotel four stars alone. The room is good and clean except for the TV. But unfortunately there is also this restaurant. When we checked in we were asked if we would like to reserve a place in the restaurant and pointed out to us that we shouldn't decide so late because otherwise everything would be fully booked. We then made a reservation. When we arrived the restaurant wasn't even half full. After a while we ordered the pie and drinks. It took forever for the drinks to arrive. While waiting, we could see a woman who had her pie returned because it was too cold. After 20 minutes my beer arrived and it was announced that the whiskey I had ordered was out. So I chose an alternative and waited another 10 minutes (the bill then showed a third, completely different whiskey). At first I thought there was a small sample in the glass that you drink before you get the real one, but she was serious. As expected, nothing about the pie was fresh. The vegetables were frozen, the dough and mashed potatoes were definitely not homemade and I also have my doubts about the meat. Considering we had to wait 40 minutes for the food, which cost around €20 (£17.5) per pie, it wasn't worth it. Then we were left alone with the card payment device. The good thing is, we wouldn't have tipped anyway.

An excellent traditional afternoon tea. I was with a group of 28. The food was well presented and the selection was varied enough to cater for all tastes. I filled a box with a selection of cakes, which I enjoyed on a long train journey the next day.
