We had a lovely meal here, the vegetarian options were great - I had a sweet potato, red onion and seed tart with chips and salad and it was delicious! The interior is gorgeous, it's clean and modern yet still has old fashioned touches. I will definitely be back!

We went here, coming in through the back door, because there were no other options in little Spean Bridge and we would have been happy with a portion of chips at that point. Surprised to discover a quiet, little hotel restaurant that was happy to serve us. Good points first: the service was nice an competent. There was one lady having to run everything, so we had to cut her some slack for the wait, but that was completely acceptable. The menu may not look like much at first glance, but it has a good selection. Food appears to be prepared fresh and though the roasted chicken I had was dry as the desert (probably due to having waited for customers all day), the steak pie was heavenly, and the veggies and chips were very nice indeed. Considering the prices, we were extremely satisfied with what we got, both in terms of the food and in terms of the service. Now the negatives: there's really only one thing. The whole place is so run-down that it looks close to reaching its demolition date, several decades past its 80ies prime (with matching horrendous decor). Had we not come in the back door, we would have thought the place must be permanently closed. Would definitely visit again, though The other two options in Spean Bridge are pretentious money-grabs.

We might have hit the place at the wrong time (4 coaches were just leaving) but this was some of the worst fish and chips I've ever had. Greasy fish, frozen chips, expensive. It was quick, only benefit. As a side note, the toilets are absolutely disgusting. Taps which didn't work, no soap, broken toilet seats. Safe to say I wont be back.

My wife and I were traveling to Loc Ness and stopped there for lunch only because of Grey Lines bus tours gave us no other option. The cashier/waitress was so rude to everyone there. We ordered our disgusting food at the cash register where the menu was attached to the counter. We then paid for our disgusting food and was told where to sit. I might have mentioned that the food was disgusting and the cashier was yelling at customers. I believe that she feels that we will never return so it’s acceptable behavior. I rarely give advice but, I will make an exception : bring a sack lunch !!

We had a particular interest in Commando history, and being aware that the Hotel had a museum dedicated to the Commandos who trained in nearby Achnacarry during World War 2, this was the main reason for our visit. We were surprised how extensive the museum was on information relating to the Commandos. We found it very good but it would probably only appeal to those having a special interest in Commando history. We fancied a drink in the Commando bar afterwards, but were quite disappointed. The bar is completely lacking in ambience, and there is nothing conducive about it that would make most people want to stay there for a drink. We never ate here either. Imagine a rough looking bar in a deprived area of a major city, and this would describe it. The Hotel Management have certainly neglected this bar. Later on we went to the nearby Spean Bridge Railway station, now a restaurant and bar, a much nicer place for a drink.

Eran bastante rancio y demasiado caro. My family and I had been to the glorious Commando Memorial and decided to drop in to this establishment to view the museum and have something to eat. The museum is interesting and has various items, papers, pictures and memorabilia and is worth a visit on its own. The lunch in the hotel, and the restaurant itself are another thing. The decor is of the late 70's I would say, and reminded me of a mess room that had been forgotten about. Clean and tidy, but very outdated. The menu was very limited. Basically fish and chips or sandwiches. The fish was full of bones so had to be picked through carefully, but was cooked well and served with nice chips. The tuna sandwiches really were an eye opener. More red onion than tuna... Who the heck puts raw red onion into tuna? The taste was so overwhelming that I had to swap my fish and chips with my wife and take her sandwich. I like onion, but cook does need a telling off for this one! With more choice, less onion and a bit of a makeover, this hotel would be receiving a higher rating and a lot more guests I think.

From the outside the hotel appears like many others in Scotland, well proportioned with a menu displayed enticing the hungry traveller to venture inside. Appearances however can be deceptive, how very true of this establishment. The dining area is brightly lit with tables spread well apart, very spartan decor brings canteen to mind and then the micro wave pings and after only a few minutes from the point of order your food is placed before you. Edible but only just best describes the food and having spoken to other people this seems to be the standard. As for the service all ten points of service were missed, truly appalling. Go hungry, loose weight, anything just avoid the disappointment!

We found someone working in the bar and were told the beer machine wasn't working (!) so we couldn't have a drink. Walking back out through the restaurant we saw just one poor couple looking almost as miserable as the room itself looked. I wouldn't have been surprised to see tumbleweed rolling past. I understand it has been taken over by a Chinese tour company and it now caters for Chinese tour groups. Make what you will of that.

As a former Commando I found it a good idea to book two nights in this Commando-hotel.I visited the "museum" a few years ago and liked what a saw initially. At this moment I think slightly different. The maintenance of this hotel was ages ago. And we were the "lucky" ones as we got the special bunkhouse...The bunkhouse number 2a and 2b are the only ones which differ from all others.I suspect that these bunkhouses were the oldest storage sheds which are transformed to some kind of sleeping accommodation.I have to admit that the room was clean en the shower worked perfectly.Personally I would not advise breakfast. The beans, sausages and scrambled eggs I ordered were "nuked". The plate was extremely hot and the food was drowning in the water that came from the ingredients. The coffee was simple but okay.As there was a huge Asian party the breakfast table was empty in an eyeblink... A faster filling would have been appreciated.Overall:All accommodation is old, very old and need maintenance very urgent. To be very honest: I truly hope all Commando-regalia will find a new suitable place to be exhibited.

When I asked for it the things we asked for they didn't even have available. My curry was so watery I didn't even know what to do with it. Kids spaghetti in tomato sauce had to be drained as it was just water. Service was non existent. I honesty feel like it could have been a hotel from cludeo we were all laughing about it. I'd have had more moisture out of chewing my flip flop! £8.50 for a large fish and chips seemed steep - but worth it after a 9 hour drive and not fancying the ready meals from the Spar shop. I urge you to buy a Rustlers and bag of crisps and be content! Not even my dog wanted the fish after I gave up trying to find a bit of fish under the batter that wasn't crispy as well. There's a huge business opportunity for someone to open a decent pub with good grub that welcomes dogs in Spean Bridge - especially given the number of walkers with dogs. Sadly as there isn't anywhere we had to head for Fish n Chips as takeaway. Now I've got nothing against a good chippy and was secretly looking forward to it, but sadly disappointed. Service was so slow, I thought hubby had got lost when he went in to order. When it finally arrived the fish was nice, but the chips clearly oven chips which is not acceptable for a chippy. We then had to sit and huddle under the outside umbrella to eat it, cold and starting to rain. I don't expect dogs in a smart restaurant, but when your bar has a tiled floor & plastic topped tables, why on earth can't a well behaved dog sit in the bar while we eat our chips? And if you're going to charge that much for fish and chips for God's sake at least make some decent chips!!

There was a choice of sandwiches or fish and chip type meals. We decided on the chippy option - we opted for fish and chips, chicken nuggets and chips and haggis, chips and gravy. The chips were frozen ones, the fish looked like it had been fried 4 times and the haggis was battered which wasn't expected and wasn't explained on the menu. Visited the Hotel on the first weekend of September for a drink and I must say, I do not understand what all the fuss is about. The Spean Bridge Hotel is obviously a dedicated resort based on a Fawlty Towers theme. I am somewhat concerned that other visitors have not grasped this concept. I suggest that they have never seen this classic show. There was more exposed pine than a Scandinavian sauna and the wipe-clean tablecloths brought back wonderful memories of my high school years. The chap at the front door had a smile that bordered on terrified (as I would expect, we are scary looking folk) but the creepily-inviting smile from the Eastern European man who attempted to follow me into the Ladies toilet simply proved the commitment to the theme. No hotel could do this on purpose... it must be a theme. We were extremely impressed and look forward to returning in the future.PS: The Commando memorial was actually very good and genuinely worth a visit.

Called into here on route to the Isle of Skye. We were passing and noticed a sign that said "Fish & Chips" and duly followed the directions round into a car park. It wasn't a fish & chip shop at all, but a side kitchen of the Spean bridge hotel. They were fetching food through from the hotel kitchen to a shop area and serving it from aluminium kitchen trays. At this point the first impressions were not good and sadly, first impressions are usually correct. It went something like this: An eastern European immigrant with a very limited grasp of the English language would take your order. He would then pop his head around the corner and shout at the kitchen staff (also Immigrants) in another language (not Scottish/gaelic) five minutes later one of these "characters" would appear with a large aluminium mess tin and dump a load of what looked like burnt oven chips (I'll come back to this) into the tray and another immigrant would follow with another tray of fish or sausage or whatever else you might have ordered, and would dump these into another tray. The original immigrant would then pick up the chips with his hands and drop them onto a paper plate and pass them onto you.Having then been served in a slip shod manner you would exit the sub kitchen and sit outside on one of the benches to tuck into what you hoped would taste better than it looked, and you would be disappointed. What looked suspiciously like burnt oven chips, were indeed burnt oven chips. They were utterly tasteless and overcooked to the point where all the moisture had gone out of them. This lack of moisture in the chips was adequately compensated for by the sausages though. You could literally ring a quarter of a cup of grease out of them. Then there's the price......... £4.50 for a children's portion of sausage & chips. Jesus would have wept....I am now approaching the age of 47 and have travelled and eaten at a lot of places in those 47 years, and this place is by far the worst experience of professional catering that I have ever come across. It really is a disgrace. Lee DoveyAugust 2015

Set on the side of Loch Lochy with stunning views over the loch. This Hotel and restaurant has fifties style decor but a very modern approach to dining and good food. Service impeccable and food especially the fish is fresh, local and delicious. It seems to be in the middle of nowhere but many people eating here were vistors from as far as Japan and the U.S. plus us from 'over the boarder ' and of course a number of locals.

Was staying in the same lodge. Good service, friendly and welcoming staff. Veg food was good and the waiters were keen to help in suggesting food items. Had enjoyed my stay there.

We stopped at Spean Bridge with CIE tours. We went for the fish and chips. We didn't know how to order at first and there was nobody there to tell us what to do, but eventually we asked and figured it out. Our food came out quickly and the fish and chips were excellent-not overly fried and the breading was light-they tasted healthy! Delicious compared to other fish and chips I have had. The mushy peas were also good.

Highly recommended for good food, very reasonably priced drinks, and an excellent commando history museum - which is free! Highly recommended. Visited Remembrance Weekend 2014 and made very welcome.

We called in late on our first day after a long journey. The food served up was overlooked and I felt that it had probably been cooked much earlier in the evening then reheated. Chips were crispy and hard all the way through and the peas were withered and a very odd colour for peas.

A lunch stop on the way to Skye - two of us had a decent meal ( baked potato and lamb salad respectively) but the other two had dreadful fish and chips. We think that they had been prepared for earlier customers ( probably in a bus party) and reheated for us - very dry, hard batter and poor fish. We'll not be back!

Fish and chip shop here now closes at 7.30 - even on a Saturday - forcing you into the hotel where service is slow, understaffed and food is poor quality 'pub grub'. Waited 35 mins for fish and chips. Could not recommend

We had been told that this place was " tired and getting worn out". So we were under no illusions. What was a shock was the prices. But in a location where all other places we tried required reservations, and this place had free tables. Well, actually a whole room of free tables.. Market forces are at work in some bizarre fashion. I ordered a lamb salad. Nice concept. Multi layered thing, each layer having its own dressing or vinaigrette. Not unpleasant, but I did giggle at being offered Tennants lager as an example of a local real ale. So yes - Tired and worn out. I guess, both Me and this establishment...

Cuisine lourde et peu digeste ; peu de choix ; ce n'est pas très bien cuisiné. Le problème c'est qu'il y a peu de possibilité sur le secteur. Trop cher pour ce que c'est. Se contenter de l'hébergement.

After journeying for 3 hours we arrived at our campsite. Saw a sign for a "chippy" at the Spean Bridge Hotel. Service was at the rear door of the main hotel. Choice of fish, jumbo sausage, black pudding or haggis. Fish did not look paricularly appetising. Black and haggis pudding consisted of slices which were deep fried. They squelched with grease and were uneatable. Sausage was slightly better. Aged "cook"/server a bit grumpy. For foreign visitors and hikers at campsites this is a really bad insult to good Scottish fare.

Was here with a bus tour and the line was pretty long and they were painstaking slow. There's only 5 items on the menu so it should be moderately quick. Once we ordered, the food came out in a reasonable time. But the system for taking the orders was almost painful. The food was good and the piece of fish they give you must come from a whale it's so big. But there was no cutlery. I had to ask for that and when I asked for ketchup and tartar sauce I was told it was on my plate. Sure enough, one tiny squeeze pack of ketchup for all those chips and one tiny squeeze pack of tartar sauce for all that fish. Staff were distracted at best and surly at worst. My wife got tired of waiting to order and went to the fish & chip stand next store. She was half done her meal by the time I was begging for just a little extra tartar sauce. I didn't have the heart to ask for more ketchup.

we enjoy whisky but this place was way too pricey. Even cheaper whisky such as Bowmore's ordinary was a ridiculous price. It made the two restaurants prices seem cheap. we won't come here again.

What a great place we appeared at by chance. Speedy and efficient service with great quality food! Not a massive menu but better having it like this so that there is a quick turnaround.Excellent fish and chips - not greasy at all!!! Old fashioned and unusual furnishing - bit of a time warp; I'd love to find out what the tourists think of it. Handled bus loads of tourists with ease inside and out.Would go back.

Stopped-off briefly in Spean Bridge and opted for the bar-menu in the Commando Bar. Though the bar area felt a bit 1980s; the humble furnishings fitted well with the lively Friday night atmosphere and the service was friendly and quick. More importantly, the fish and chips were excellent in quality and generous in portion. The fish was large and perfectly cooked with a light crispy batter. The hand-cooked chips were the business and the large serving-dish of fresh mushy peas a delight. The Guinness was also exceptionally well kept.

The hotel is a throw back from the 1980's with pine clad walls in tiny rooms. The residents lounge was so cold we were unable to sit in it. The bar staff were grubby and unfriendly, the bar was cold and unwelcoming. The food was from the chippy next door and very poor. Overall it was such a disappointment, was here a few years ago as a serving commando and its changed beyond all recognition and dramatically gone down hill...on this occasion I took my wife to reminisce, I was embarrassed and ashamed it still carries the commando name.

Stopped off for some food en route to Oban. The sign (attached) advertisng sandwiches looked a bargain but you have to look closely to get the correct prices. Anyway we went in. We came across 5 staff inside. Not one of them spoke to us or asked us if we wanted something. We waited and no one said anything so we just left. Very strange and we felt as though we were intruding. We went to the mill cafe next dor which was friendly and good value.

This place badly needs updating but it is surprising and full of Commando history. The curry is excellent (chef learnt his trade in the far east). Bar is cheaply priced with a good selection of whisky available. Some locals frequent the place adding to the atmosphere.

Came here with my son for lunch & really enjoyed the food, staff were very friendly, helpful & happy. I had the fish, chips mushy peas( or garden peas if prefer) with bread & butter lovely & soft. My son had scampi chips mushy peas. Very good food & didn't have long to wait either, not that it bothers me if it did as I've got lot of patience lol. Also forgot to mention the toilets are upstairs & spotless cleaning.

Booked a meal deal a month ago. Day before arrival got e mail asking if we wanted to upgrade to a meal deal. Arrived to a big electronic display showing restaurant and meal deal. Told at reception no evening meals available we could have a refund. Very poor. Nearest alternative Morrisons cafe (which had practically nothing on the menue or McDonalds. Ruined our stay .

Roads End Cafe is a lifesaver at this time of the year, we were on the NC500 and fancied a bite to eat when we got to John o Groats. It is such a basic cafe but still serves hot toasties/sandwiches, soup and small cakes/scones. The lady that served us was lovely, so welcoming and willing to go the extra mile, she even recommended the haggis and cheese toastie which I couldn't turn down. Since it was so quiet, it was takeaway only but she let us sit in due to the gale force winds outside. I have to say the toasties are the best I have had in a while and not even that expensive despite the location, absolutely fantastic. It is a little gem if you're looking for something eat when you reach the most northernly point in Scotland!
