Tianavaig View Restaurant in Highland

On an evening before our departure day out of Skye, we couldn’t find any place to dine in without a reservation. So we walked into this place and the lady who greeted us looked like she was forced to be at work. Seated us and took our order. We ordered four fish and chips, risotto and soup with few drinks. The soup and the risotto were sub par and we did not even finish 25% of the risotto. Fish and chips were just ok. This is probably one of the worst services and food quality on my trip to Scotland. Will not recommend this place at all. Go get a takeout of a pizza or fish & chips at chippy rather than go to this place.

The food is very good, fish is fresh and well cooked. The staff is very friendly, highly recommended!

There are only two stars here because I don't like being ripped off. This restaurant apparently believes that tourists are stupid, delirious zombies and don't know anything. We ordered 1/2 grilled lobster (as described on the menu) and got 5 scampis, for a price of almost 40 euros! Adequate for half a lobster, but not for 5 Sampis. In response to our complaint, shrug and ignore. Luckily we had mussels for starters which were good. What would the lobster have tasted like?! My conclusion: You should ignore such fools. Just on principle.

Only for hotel guests, although completely empty. You should also write about it outside.

We were pleasantly surprised to have a good meal despite some of the negative reviews. Soup, Skink soup, Salmon and F&C were all tasty. Service was with a smile

Understaffed but we were not rushing to finish and make space for the next diners. Caprese salad was very tasty. Mussels and langastines were perfectly cooked. Favorite chips we have eaten thus far on our trip!

Trying to get food in Portree without a reservation in a restaurant is impossible. We were lucky enough to get a table here. Staff were slow and totally disinterested. Got out drinks order wrong, forgot my husbands soup which he never yet received and forgot to order our main courses until we asked several times how long our food would be. After we complained they deducted the starters and drinks from our bill. The food was good but the staff were absolutely atrocious.

Wow...what a seafood platter I had back in October! A feast and a seaside view made for an enjoyable meal after a day of touring magical Skye. I enjoyed a Cider (new vice taken home from Scotland) and finished off with a delightful sherbert and irish coffee. Reservations recommended. Climbing conveniently upstairs to my Royal Hotel room with excellent harbour view was a convenient bonus.

What an underrated gem! We had the nicest servers, everyone is so lovely! And the food portions are massive, and cost is standard for the area. The quality of food is impeccable. We ate at a “higher end” restaurant the night before and for the same cost we got a quarter of the amount of food. It’s all delicious- did the Cullen skink, mussels, and langoatuines. Just phenomenal. In addition to the quality, it’s the only restaurant we were able to get into at 630 pm. After spending an hour trying to find dinner on our honeymoon, this was a wonderful treat and we enjoyed our dinner here very much!

Nous avons été reçus gaiement par des serveuses de bonne humeur. Les moules "marinière" n'en étaient pas : ce sont des moules à la crème. Très bonnes et apparemment de la région (j'espère bien, vu la production dans le coin). Elles sont servies avec des pains à l'ail dignes du Pizza Hut. Mon compagnon a pris un Mac and Cheese, lui aussi servi avec des pains à l'ail...et des frites! C'était noté à la carte mais surprenant! Malheureusement son plat de pâtes était fort gras. Est-ce au goût des écossais? Nous sommes conscients que les fromages du coin ne sont pas aussi bons que les français et suisses mais là ce n'était pas ragoutant du tout.

Restaurant of the Royal Hotel. We had to wait a long time for the food and the quality did not match the price. At least, the staff was nice.

We were booked, arrived on time and were shown to our table in the tianavaig restaurant. We were given menus and the waitress said 'ill be back in a couple of minutes to see what you want to drink'. Twenty minutes later we were still there without any service. I had to search for a waitress. Then I asked why were fish and chips not on the menu we were given. Answer - you can only get this in the bar. This is not what the website menu says. The prices were also higher on the menu than they were on the website. We moved to the bar (don't bother asking what that was like) and ordered. Forty minutes later and having been told by the (lovely) bar lady that the chef was 'overwhelmed' by orders, we got our fish and chips. I was too hungry to enjoy it quite frankly so a waste of time and money. We went to the chippy and had a carry out on the next evening which was delicious! (and much cheaper). I felt embarrassed for visitors if this is what they face (we are local).

Part of the Royal hotel. Amazing taste. Had the salmon, mac&cheese and the pot pie. Fresh food and very well seasoned. Highly recommended.

The restaurant offered a variety of typical dishes expected to be found in Scotland. The soup could be thickened slightly to give it a creamy texture. The garlic mushroom was uniquely prepared with two slices of garlic bread topped with stir-fried mushrooms. The battered fish & chips looked appetizing when presented but when flipped over there were burnt bits. Similarly, the creamy chicken dish looked good when presented but some of the meat did not taste fresh.

We arrived in Portree quite late on a Saturday evening and given that most of the places weren’t taking people after 9pm, we were happy to find this place. It’s not super fancy but the service was good and the staff friendly. Meal was standard pub food and my husband and I both enjoyed our scampi & chips/fish and chips. Had some lovely Skye ale to go with it and dessert after, which was also delicious. We left stuffed and very happy!

We had lunch here whilst visiting Portree. Menu options were a bit limited, so we had pizza. It tasted nice, and we asked for 9" pizzas and were given 12" pizzas for the same price. Service was pleasant however slow... they appeared to be short-staffed.

This was a disappointing meal. My crispy battered fish was not at all crispy and so uncooked in the middle that I couldn’t eat it. When I told the waitress she just said ‘oh’. She wasn’t interested. We had to wait a very long time to settle our bill as the staff were too busy cleaning their empty tables. It’s such a shame because the restaurant has a wonderful outlook across the water.

We had a nice meal in a restaurant which had a good atmosphere good service and a good view. This is not high end restaurant but the choice was reasonable for the price charged.

Excellent food and attentive service! Good value for money as well! Interior decor is a bit ‘canteen like’ and lacking in atmosphere, which for us was the only minus point.

Stopped by with a few friends for an evening meal, the bartender jo, was warm and welcoming! Had the blade of beef cooked in red wine and rosemary, was totally amazed! The mango and passionfruit cheesecake was the perfect end to the meal... cannot praise this place and it’s staff enough!! Do not miss this opportunity!

For a restaurant to have such a prime location in portree, they obviously just rely on hotel accommodation. There is a reason why it is 29th best food from 31. How bad can 30 and 31 be? 6 of us rudely interrupted the staff on arrival from their private conversation to be shown to our table. Prices were not too bad but food quality and quantity were poor. I would have thought that with reviews being consistently bad that management would have done something over the years to help their business.

It was ok, but many better in area. They showed "no tables" available. We said we'd wait the 30-40 minutes and after about 5 minutes we were called. At least 4 other tables totally empty.

Prefiero el restaurante Pier donde comimos la noche anterior.

Fuimos a este restaurante a cenar. El personal no era muy acogedor y el servicio era un poco lento a pesar de que el restaurante estaba casi vacío. Pedimos 2 fish and chips y 1 hamburguesa, pero se olvidaron de un fish and chips. La salsa tártara no parecía muy fresca y el pescado estaba por debajo del promedio. La hamburguesa estaba bien. No recomendaría este lugar para la cena.

No fuimos recibidos cuando ingresamos, y tuve que buscar a alguien para darnos algunos menús. No se exhiben alimentos en la puerta, y solo se sirven menús de bebidas en las mesas. Mientras estábamos sentados (durante mucho tiempo), esperando nuestra comida, vimos a 5 parejas pasear, echar un vistazo al menú de bebidas, obviamente tratando de ver qué platos están disponibles, y la camarera simplemente los miraba, sin ofrecerles un menú. ¡Las 5 parejas deambularon de nuevo! ¿Un amistoso "hola" la hubiera matado? ¿La administración se da cuenta de cuánto pierde el negocio debido a la capacitación deficiente del personal? ! Nuestra comida finalmente llegó y era comestible, pero en serio, ¿una ensalada sin DIENTES? (es decir, ¿algunas lechugas amargas y rizadas y algunas rodajas de pepino?) ¿En qué año vivimos? Il locale è parte dell'hotel royal.Ci aspettavamo quello che abbiamo trovato... un locale con lo stile dell'isola di skye.Abbiamo mangiato molto bene il pesce.Abbiamo bevuto un buon vino sudafricano. Usualmente en mis revisiones, tiendo a no comentar mucho sobre el servicio a menos que sea sobresaliente, o en este caso, memorablemente por debajo de los estándares. . .Cuando llegamos, el lugar estaba casi vacío. Trovare posto per 8 persone è sempre complicato, ma essendo che alloggiavamo nell'hotel subito sopra, abbiamo optato per la comodità.

Tuve una comida no planificada aquí un domingo por la noche y me pareció una gran experiencia. El personal era muy acogedor y nuestro camarero Calum fue muy atento, lo cual fue muy apreciado ya que estábamos un poco apurados. La comida estaba bien preparada y presentada de forma atractiva. Los asientos eran cómodos y la temperatura en el comedor era ideal teniendo en cuenta el clima helado de afuera.

Decidimos almorzar en Tianavaig ya que todos los demás alrededor del área estaban cerrados. Bonita vista de la ventana donde nos sentamos y el personal era agradable. Sin embargo, la comida fue decepcionante. Pedí sopa del día con Smoked Salmon & Cucumber Toastie, vino sin el pepino: (y la sopa sabía a salsa de espagueti. Mi marido tenía el pollo derretido, el trozo de pollo era pequeño y seco, pero tenía una porción generosa de papas fritas sin embargo.

Da fast alle Restaurants in Portree voll waren, sind wir hier gelandet. Wir hatten Fisch von der Tageskarte und Lachs aus der Standardkarte. Beides war wirklich sehr lecker und schön angerichtet. Preislich im normalen Rahmen von Portree. Lediglich das Ambiente ist fraglich... Teppich im gesamten Gastraum und die Tische ein bisschen kantinenhaft angeordnet. Aber das Essen und der sehr nette Service hat uns entschädigt.

Estuve dos veces en este restaurante. La primera vez porque nos alojaremos en el hotel del restaurante, el segundo tiempo porque todos los otros restaurantes estaban llenos.

Mi marido y yo fuimos a este restaurante y ambos tenían el mismo plato. Su estaba bien caliente y la mía era en el mejor de los tibios. La carne en su tarta estaba bien pero la mía estaba grasoso. El servicio era bueno y la distribución. Calificación Promedio dio este y como no merecen "Muy bueno" y no había opción de "buena calificación".

As a party of three we had a meal here. I had venison steak, when it arrived it didn't look freshly cooked, was dry and resembled shoe leather. The veg was tasteless, potatoes under cooked and very few. My mother had game pie which was...

The food was below average, there was no atmosphere and the service was lacking. Nice views, price was fairly standard but disappointing overall.

Nice place to eat looking out over the harbour. Food very tasty and well presented. The menu had fewer choices than it would have done in high season but there was still a good variety.

The food and service were quite good and ok value for the money. My salad was a bit over run with dressing but I enjoyed the burger. The fish my daughter and partner had was delicious and very fresh. Too many chips/fries, but that seems...

Food was nice, as good as other pubs visited in the highlands. Pretty typical menu, definitely won't go hungry. A couple of local beers worth a try, particularly the pinnacles but you can probably get that at other places around Skye.

We went there on a Tuesday night but were told it's full so we made a reservation on Wednesday. The mussels was delicious, nicely cooked and served, the other dishes were ok. Good environment and if you get a window seat you can have a view of the Portree Bay.

We visited the restaurant on a Monday night, when some of the other restaurants in town were closed, so it may have been busier than usual. Still, we waited a ridiculously long time for our meal, without any communication from the wait staff. While we did appreciate them making minor accommodations for us with a dish, and the food was okay, we would not go back to the restaurant.

The restaurant was clean and the food was good. The steak pie was lovely and a good helping and the scampi was good. However, beware of the trio of sausages. Three tiny sausages in a dollop of mash (the member of our party who had this described it as three ice cream sized scoops of mash with three slightly bigger than Wee Willie Winkie Sausages) although they said the onion gravy was lovely.

We went in on a Sunday for a bit of lunch and were quite disappointed. The staff were lovely, friendly and helpful, and free wifi is always a bonus in the Highlands when mobile signals are scarce, but we were quite disappointed with the standard of the food. It was uninspiring and not much care had been put into the presentation! I could have made it at home cheaper, and presented it much better!

We enjoyed dinner at the Tianavaig restaurant. The waitstaff was attentive but we never felt rushed or pressured. The lamb was excellent, as was the risotto. One in our party had the Cullen Skink as a starter (very good) and the local mussels were delicious.

The lunchtime service is in a contemporary part of the hotel with hard furnishings and a cafeteria feel. The adjacent restaurant (evenings only) however looked really nice with the tables laid with white linen, sparkling glassware and cutlery. The limited menu was further depleted by three items being unavailable with no substitutes being offered. However despite the prices being above average the service was friendly and the food was acceptable.

I guess there was a reason this restaurant was empty. I suppose they share a kitchen with the pub in the same hotel. I think I should have eaten in the pub and saved half. The haggis was quite good and as it was our last real night in Scotland, a perfect meal.

Waren hier zum Abendessen, Personal war sehr nett.Lokal war voll, hatten Glück noch einen Platz zu erwischen.Essen war sehr gut. Von aussen wirkt das Lokal, dass zum Hotel gehört nicht gerade vertrauenserweckend. ABer ist zu empfehlen.Hatten Fisch und Burger war alles sehr lecker,

We ate in the bistros which is a bit soulless and a bit of a walkway to the bar, the food was great, good sized portions, tasty and well cooked, the staff were very friendly and attentive.

Paul was excellent. Unfortunately he appeared to be running a busy restaurant almost single handedly. Our waiter could not tell the difference between a bottle of red wine and a bottle of champagne. Some of us ordered mussels for a starter, only for our waiter to return minutes later and advise us they had sold out of mussels and we needed to choose another starter. However we could still have mussels for a main course if we wished. The food when it arrived was actually reasonable tasting but cold and they were slow at tidying up after each course. The biggest problem appeared to be that Paul was having to do everything including chasing up our waiter. People were even queuing up to pay their bill at the end of their meal as only Paul knew how to work the card machine.

Excellent staff, cheerful and attentive. The restaurant was well laid out with plenty space between tables, nice table settings and a good menu. Both the starters and main course were excellent, looked good and tasted great, appetising and sufficient. Would certainly recommend it for its fish dishes.

Upon entering my partner and I noticed the restaurant was mostly empty, we figured out why... When we arrived that waitress told us we could sit anywhere we wanted then it took her almost 15mins to make her way to the table. A man who looked more like a kitchen hand than a waiter came over and handed us an A5 sheet of paper which was "the specials" the paper was transparent in some places from what I can only assume was cooking oil. The dessert was the worst of it, they are serving what the Royal likes to call "Chocolate fudge cake" this was an artificially flavoured (cocoa powder not chocolate) sponge cake with a cheap chocolate source, I can be certain it was mass produced but I suspected it was, for The Royals sake I hope it wasn't make onside. Very disappointing for someone who was expecting fudge! My partner received a tiny slice of mass produced toffee cake, the kind that comes frozen in a tin foil tray. Both desserts were £5, such a let down. The food here would be acceptable if it was the price of crappy pub takeaway but the menu/prices imply a higher quality meal. When we made it to our BnB and told the host this story he said: "we avoid mentioning The Royal to guests." I suggested that from now on he warn them!

Had a meal here in November and the food was ok at best and to be honest thought it would be a lot better for the money I paid.The staff and service were a bit slow and looked as if they could not be asked, that aside the food was ok and would I go back again well maybe if the food matched it's high prices.this place could be very good if it changed one or two things as it get staff that want to make you feel welcome..

My Son and young Brother visited this island with a view to relocation, and we came across this Hotel purely by accident. Please do not miss the experience of the most wonderful food we have ever tasted. I do not know who the chef is, but he is wasting his talents here! We were only there overnight, but we were tempted to stay all week, just to taste the entire menu! Our family have been in some really top-class restaurants, but this has to be the best. Not to be missed!

I get a bit suspicious when you know you are buying the last room and, as you are told the amount, you get an askance look and a quizzical tone as they deliver the price. This hotel is well, OK. Clean and well located but pricey for what it is. The styling was retro '60s but not in a good way. Have to say though, the waitresses at breakfast were very friendly and the Haggis was just great.

Very slow service, slightly indifferent attitude from the staff. Food was ok, nothing to write home about though. This was the last resort, since all the other hotels we called at were fully booked and there was a huge queue outside of the fish and chip shop.

Paid £120 for a night It was a booking on the day though and Skye is very busy. You can always tell the quality of a UK hotel by its biscuits and this one has custard creams...If they had charged £80 I would not be writing this review. It is an OK hotel, good location and view, but very basic indeed.

We looked around the area and thought most restaurants/cafes were expensive then found the Royal and were well pleased with the service, quality and choice of food and the very reasonable prices. We returned the following night.

We ate here on 3 nights. The food was very good which is why we returned. The service was, however, very slow. If you are a hurry, this is NOT the place to eat!!

La stanza era spaziosa, ma l'ambiente in generale molto poco curato. Gli ambienti comuni e gli arredi denunciano con forza tutti i loro anni. Ha piu' l'aspetto di un vecchio ostello, piuttosto che di un hotel 3 stelle, ma il prezzo in agosto e' quasi da suite 5 stelle. Da non consigliare.

We had a horrible experience here last night. Despite pre-booking, we were told there was a "problem" with our table and we would have to sit in the cafeteria rather than the restaurant. Here, we experienced terrible and slow service, an awful atmosphere (imagine a fast food joint on a Saturday afternoon) and when the food eventually came it was damn awful. I had a salad and the leaves were visibly past their best; my partner had the mac and cheese - this was visibly overlooked, as was the accompanying garlic bread. I truly wish we'd gone to a fish and chip shop and sat out by the water. Don't waste your money here.

Once we got our meals, our waitress pretty much disappeared. It was clear that she and her two co-workers were stretched too thin between the restaurant and the bistro/bar. We waited forever to get our bill; eventually we walked up to the hostess area and asked to be helped, and even then we had to stand there for a long time while they figured out our bill and got our change. Very disappointing, seeing as we both enjoyed the food.

Lovely food at an affordable price and friendly atmosphere, with terrific views over the harbour. Very good for families.

It was easy to end up here due to its location. Starters average mains were lovely. Service was slow. Price was too highfor what you get. Return ..No. There are better places to eat in portree.

This hotel doesn't look particularly great on the outside and the interior of the restaurant area looked a bit grim and could do with sprucing up a bit. However I can assure you the food was lovely, served by two really pleasant young ladies. It was inexpensive, hot, tasty and all four of us cleared our plates. We would definitely go there again when we revisit Portree.

We ate here twice during our stay in Portree. The menu was varied and everything we had was enjoyable. The langoustines special was delicious (although messy!). Service was friendly and just right (not over attentive but not waiting for ages either).

Despite the fact there were two ceilidhs on in town that night, I was lucky enough to snare a table for an early dinner at the Royal. Had excellent service and a very tasty steak.

Food and service was fabulous. A little pricey, but you get what you pay for. Great haggis and generous portions. Sticky toffee pudding was fab! We did not need a reservation.

The food was fresh and very good, service good as well, prices ok, unfortunatelly there is nothing to like about the ambiance. However not a bad choice when all the other places are full.

The place was fairly quite when we ate here service was quick and the waiter pleasant. The steak pie was very nice with decent portion sizes overall I would recommend this place for good value food.

High quality decor; comfortable. Excellent food, friendly service. Wide choice of sea-food dishes. Although on the developed side of the main road through Portree, there is still an enjoyable sea view. You might prefer to avoid a widow seat however - passers-by will almost certainly eye-up what you are eating before making up their own mind. But that would be the case in any pavement cafe in France, for example.

We used the place because it was recommended to go there for Internet services. Had a coffee, paid for the use of their WiFi as we needed a stable connection for working purposes. Two days later the rate had doubled(!), never any receipts. It seemed as if the lady at the desk wanted to make some extra money and worked into her own pocket and, seeing that we were returning, simple doubled her private income. We stopped using their service with that experience. Quite disappointed that a large place needs to take such actions and give guests the feeling of clearly being taken advantage of. The connection worked at least.

The Royal Hotel is great if you want cheap wifi access thats reliable and quick. Its £2 for an unlimited time which is brilliant if you're on holiday but still need to keep up to date with the office. The drinks are a bit pricey, and don't expect a hot chocolate, let alone the deluxe version, they had ran out of it when a friend and I visited last. Its a quite place, especially after lunch, I can't speak for the quality of the food but I can't fault the value for money wifi access!

The food is not too bad, there is just no atmosphere. There are much nicer places to eat in Portree.
