The best restaurants serving British food in York Yorkshire and The Humber

Stayed here 2 nights as my partner was running the Yorkshire marathon. Great decision as we absolutely loved the place. Room gorgeous and quirky which we loved. Had breakfast booked but had dinner there also both nights, food was immense and choices were great. The staff though are different class, go out of their way to help you and make you feel welcome. We are already planning a 2nd trip to this absolute gem

Paid a visit today 13.10.24. Shame to hear the restaurant is closing this week at under 2 weeks notice to the staff. Must praise the manager who very professionally informed of the closure in terms of some items.may be short of on the menu. I.e. chips subbed for sweet potato fries. Lovely meal, chicken to die for. And enjoyable salad. Pleased we actually went today to be able to support in the final week. Not a frequent visitor due to being out of the area, but have made the trip several times to here as it is/was our most local one. Hope all the staff manage to be relocated. Top recommendation to the manager.

Un pequeño lugar genial. Visita por primera vez, con amigos. Comida impresionante, y al rojo vivo, el propietario no podía hacer lo suficiente, carácter tan grande como su estatura. pero la noche hecha extra especial por 2 chicos en el karaoke, nos hizo sentir muy bienvenidos, no han tenido tan buen nght en siglos.

What a gem and reasonable prices , food was cooked to order so always fresh and hot , staff were really helpful and friendly, especially kerry and Amy We were staying inthe Travel lodge next door and there's a connecting door to get inside , no faults on the 4 days we used it for our evening meal

Having been here a few months ago and had an excellent meal,decided to travel from our home in Scarborough ,straight here for Sunday lunch in the hoe they could fit us in, my goodness so relieved when they found us a table.I ordered beef roast,husband had the turkey.Everything about the food was to die for! Beautiful Yorkshire puddings(massive) lovely and crisp.Roast potatoes (think a hint of garlic) red cabbage whole carrots cooked to perfection,cauliflower cheese,broccoli,and the most fantastic mash think with chive? not sure but out of this world(and I am not a fan of mash) Both meats cooked to perfection and so tasty as was the gravy. I cannot praise the chef/cook highly enough! wished we lived nearer!

My wife and myself have eaten here a fair few times. But never have been as wowwed as we were last night. The gentleman at front of house was impeccable. A credit to the pub. After surveying the specials menu we both decided that the shin of beef pie with champ mash and fresh veg sounded too good to be missed. We were not disappointed! We both said, quite possibly the best pub meal we have ever ever had! The beef was cooked perfectly, the short crust pastry was just incredible. My wife Lydia said it was just like her mum's. That's some credit to the chef! The champ mash was delicious and the veg cooked absolutely spot on. Not a second too long. Again, perfect! We were probably too full for dessert but we were never going to resist if the main was anything to go by. My wife chose the Eton mess. I've never seen anyone look so happy eating a dessert. It looked amazing and indeed it was. I chose the apple and blueberry crumble. Simple and delicious. Just how I like it. All washed down with two fine glasses of Primitivo. And all very reasonable too. Top marks to everyone at the pub. We most definitely will be back!

This cafe is awesome. I am gluten free and have not had such a wonderful meal for breakfast (party in my mouth). The staff are clean, tidy and polite, working hard to maintain timely arrival of meals. Inside cafe is tidy and clean. I will definitely be back tomorrow morning and hopefully Monday to. So much food that my son could not eat all his. Thank you for catering for my needs so wonderfully. April.

We called in while we were waiting for friends to arrive in York. The pizza was really good. Beer was good.

So I had the humour with a roti bread. The proportion of humour to bread was ridiculous. There was a massive plate of humous which was delicious by the way but 1 very small pitta like bread. When I asked for more bread I got charged another £2 which made the dish cost nearly £10.

I was at the hotel early morning ahead of a conference and wanted tea and toast although not a resident. A young waiter called Abdul was very helpful and although his lounge section was not open for drinks etc at 7.40am he assisted and organised both for me. A professional , helpful and informative waiter who should be recognised for his service. Thanks again - it certainly left a positive impression with me about the hotel.

Qué gran noche aquí. Nos reunimos con amigos para hacer una salida, excelente servicio, cervezas frías decentes, y nada demasiado problema para el personal atento. Crédito a los gerentes.

Nos dieron un vale como regalo para una comida de 3 platos, así que elegimos aquí como las críticas se veían bien. Estábamos hambrientos temprano y no teníamos dónde más estar, así que les llamé y les pregunté si había una posibilidad de que pudiéramos sentarnos temprano. Lamentablemente me dijeron que no, ya que estaban llenos. No hay problema, valió la pena intentarlo. Aunque cuando llegamos estaban muy lejos de estar completamente reservados, y todo el tiempo que estuvimos allí, no había más de 3 mesas más en la habitación en la que estábamos. Ligeramente frustrante, pero no es un gran problema. Esperábamos un menú más pequeño para el bono que es lo que tenemos. No hay problema, la selección sigue siendo buena. Entrantes, calamares y pudín Yorkshire. Ambos bastante promedio, los calamares eran como goma de mascar. Para la principal, tengo un filete. Me dijeron que sólo lo cocinan en el lado raro como un filete delgado. Pedí que se cocinara un poco más porque no me gusta demasiada sangre. Fue cremado, y completamente sin condimento. Mi pareja pollo era bueno, él disfrutaba de los sabores y el cocinero era bueno. Los dos comimos brownies de postre, nada por lo que gritar, muy promedio. También nos dieron una copa de vino con el vale que era agradable. Las 2 señoritas que nos sirvieron eran lo único que realmente sonreír con esta experiencia, ambos eran absolutamente encantadores y muy bien informados. El hotel en sí es impresionante, y estoy seguro de un lugar encantador para alojarse. Asumo que si estuviera pagando el precio completo por el menú normal la comida sería mejor, es una pena ya que se gastó un buen dinero en el vale para nosotros, y nos fuimos bastante decepcionados.

We called as members to buy our tickets for the summer season. Since it was lunchtime we stayed for our meal. The daily special was a casserole of beef in red wine with mashed potato and green beans. It was excellent all round, including well prepared meat which was plentiful, tender and succulent. At £10 it was also great value for money. Service was pleasant, helpful and quick. This venture deserves more support.

We received numerous emails from the restaurant (when staying at the hotel) advising us to reserve a table for dinner, and for breakfast. We thought either it’s because the restaurant is excellent and they want to make sure they look after us, given we are staying at the hotel, or it’s a sign of desperation - We didn’t know which it was, but all became clear. We booked Breakfast, and thought we will ask Reception when we check in how busy is the restaurant that night. We were informed there was a group in but that was it. We therefore decided we would go to the restaurant, as the Tapas Menu on the website looked really good when we read it. We turned up at the restaurant and were seated. We have already decided what we wanted to order, and therefore gave our order to the Waitress, and awaited our food. First to come was the Dirty Hasselback potatoes which were nice, and we though this is good. We then received the Char-grilled tender stem broccoli which was cold, so I sent it back and explained it was cold. They did replace the broccoli dish, but it was only luke warm at best when it came back out. We were then told the Chef had said the Mini Yorkshire puddings were not available, we were a little perplexed as it had been 25 ish minutes since we placed the order and were very disappointed at finding this out so far into the meal, as mini Yorkshire Puddings, in York is what they are famous for. We had ordered Yorkshire venison meat balls (at £9.00) and they came out in a little dish, of which there was only 3 or 4 of them, but you might as well served up rubber golf balls. They were disgusting – chewy, tasteless and very unpleasant. I went to find a member of staff, and a Gentleman who seemed to be in charge of the restaurant. I explained that the meatballs were chewy, tasteless and not nice, to which he responded in a very patronising way, to which I had to tell him to stop insulting my intelligence. He went on about never having had a complaint, and it’s just me who seems to have a problem. I explained how the rest of the meal was, to which he snapped back we replaced your broccoli for you and the Customer is not always right you know. That I’m afraid was like a red rag to a bull, I cancelled the rest of the meal, I wasn’t going to endure this any longer. I asked to see the General Manager, to which I was told he wasn’t there, but he can give me his email address, I said yes please….I’m still waiting now. In the end my Wife and I decided as weren’t able to eat much in the Restaurant we would go into York for a proper dinner. Breakfast the next morning, again the website lists what you can have. The menu is very well written on the website, and you think this is going to be great, but the actual food that comes is awful. We expected a nice Breakfast Bar from which to choose what we wanted, but it was a very small selection despite what the website says. My Wife & I both ordered the ham and cheese omelette from the cooked to order menu. Every Chef should be able to cook an omelette, but what they served us was an embarrassment, the egg was overcooked, the omelette was tasteless and the ham was more like spam than ham. Needless to say we left it and went into York to find a proper breakfast. When they are charging £19.95 per person, you expect a decent breakfast and quality food. The Restaurant/Chef really lets the Middleton Hotel in York down, it could be a fantastic place. The Hotel side is great, the restaurant awful, and until someone sorts that out I’m sure I won’t be the only person to raise my concerns.
